Hello,
I am trying to use FoxFi with my Nexus 7 tablet. I have a Photon 4G that I am running it on. I just did a factory reset on my Photon and my tablet is brand new. I can connect for only a few minutes and my Nexus 7 will drop connection but FoxFi shows that it is still turned on, just does not show it is connected anymore. I've made sure that any timeouts have been disabled, I have no app killer on my tablet or phone. Everything is up to date. Bluetooth DUN connection works fine when using PDANet, Open Garden, and FoxFi but I can't get a lot of the google applications to work when using that method.
FoxFi shows up on my tablet fine, connects fine but after 30 seconds to a minute it will disconnect and then maybe 5 minutes later it will reconnect only to drop the connection another 30 seconds later. I also did a factory reset on my tablet. Both are back to factory settings and they are still having the same problem.
I saw there was another problem along these lines and they said that the problem was an app killer. I don't have any of those installed.
Anyone have any other ideas? I am fresh out of them.
Regards,
locohammerhead
Did you ever come to a solution? I have the same exact problem.

Foxfi just doesn't seem to be all that reliable. I can start it on my phone and have a hotspot up and nothing will be able to see it until I clear the apps data and restart the phone.

It's a FoxFi quirk. Play with it enough and it will resolve itself.
For instance, installed FoxFi on my Droid Charge, connected fine to my Nexus 7, put the Charge in my purse, and a few minutes later the Nexus loses connection. Pull out the Charge and it still claims to be connected, or claims to not be running while having the icon in the notification bar.
Install the Proxy, and the Nexus 7 cannot connect. Set the Nexus to use the Proxy settings, and it works great for a while, then won't connect. Have to delete the proxy settings on the Nexus and go back to DHCP to make it work while proxy is enabled on the Charge. Annoying.
Now I tend to put the Charge in my purse with the screen still on to ensure my signal. lol This is on the replacement Charge, the original would keep the connection solid without the screen on without issue. Still tweaking the replacement's settings.
I got rid of Foxfi. I flat out couldn't stay connected while on the go. Nexus 7 would lose connection with Foxfi / Samsung Prevail every block I I walked. Annoying. I would get the "out of range" on the tablet in wifi connections but the phone/ the Foxfi app would still show as broadcasting. I use Open Garden now and I stay connected solid.

Looks like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 is having some odd wifi issues.
It started when I tethered with my Galaxy S Vibrant phone. After about 15 minutes the phone would freeze up and I'd lose network connectivity on the tablet. The mobile AP app is unresponsive and I have to reboot the phone.
I've tether other tablets and never had this problem. I tried a few times and the GT 10.1 froze up the phone every time after about 15 minutes. But tried again with my iPad and Nook Color and it didn't have any problems.
Then I get home and use my 802.11n router. And I start running into intermitten network connectivity drops. Market and other apps will sometimes give a "no network connection" message and ask me to Retry, which usually then works.
I also see the wifi icon turn from blue to gray sometimes.
Tried my 802.11g router as well, some deal. So I think it's something quirky with the wifi on my tablet.
PS. One thing I just realized. This only happens with apps that are running in the background. If I'm watching YouTube or I'm downloading apps from the Market, I never ad it give me a network error in the middle of this activity. But if I switch a background app, then it'll tell me no network connection.
Maybe I should do a factory reset first.
that is very weird, I have had my galaxy tab since the 8th (went to the NYC launch) and I have been tethering it to my thunderbolt with no problem.

On mine, default wifi setting was to turn off when screen off. I changed it to never.

Same thing happens to me. This is my 2nd unit. First one was fine. just traded out for the grey, but they both have the same issue. No issues when I'm tethered though.
Hi, I'm having this problem with internet connection using the portable Wi-Fi hotspot on my Galaxy Nexus. My A500 connects without a hitch to the Nexus but after 12 mins (this happens after each connection),it disconnects then waits for about 20secs before establishing connection again. This can be annoying especially when streaming videos on the A500 which tends to result in starting the videos all over again ie after each disconnection.
What can i do to resolve this issue?
I'm on Stock Honeycomb 3.2.1 and not rooted. Thanks

are you sure it's not from the nexus the problem ?
I connect my tablet to my liquid metal I got disconnected only when the 3G goes down... but never the wifi.
check maybe setting wifi policy etc... maybe.
check your phone as well.
try another device I mean tablet to another device, another device to nexus...

The hotspot connection on GNexus seem to be active each time the internet connection on the A500 goes down. I've checked the wifi sleep policy on both devices. They are both set to "never (when on battery)". May be software on GNexus need to be updated in order for this issue to be resolved. I used to have an HTC Desire as a mobile hotspot device which worked though once A500 is inactive, the connection on the HTC ends.

im not sure exactly what one would be your best bet.. But on the phone. try d/loading a wifi/3g data usage and analyzer app. Something that can watch the data services and give a report on what is happening.
SORRY I cant give you a app name to try but i have not had any wifi/3g issues so not used one..
Good luck..
I have similar problem on my a500 . When I connect to my AP I usually get 4/5 bars but after some time without moving anywhere my signal drops slowly to 0 bars, tablet disconnects and reconnect after 1 sec with 4 bars. And so on... No idea how to fix that bug.

That problem you speak about was an old HC bug...
the wifi drop
I got it, but on the version 3.2 that was resolved, and ACER released a kind of... patch about this year ago.
- Wifi work then when connect drop down to 0 and disconnect then try to reconnect... that was a problem from a file supplicant things. needed to be deleted.

I bet it's your phone software got a problem something like that. did you try to connect the tablet to another wifi and see how long stay connected...
my tablet is connected on a hotpot 24/7 nearly and got rarely disconnected.

The problem is,the connection on the phone is stable and everything that requires internet access on the GNexus seem to gain access to it. Also, when the tablet is connected to my home Wi-Fi, it never disconnects or drop signals. So, it seems the issue is between the A500 and the GNexus. Probably a software bug btw the hotspot on GNexus and the connection to A500 or the connections btw the two devices are incompatible due to one being on honeycomb and the other on ICS. Just my opinion anyway

You might be right about the GNEXUS cos when I was using an HTC Desire as a hotspot, there weren't any issues with connections. Probably, the next ics update for the GNEXUS might resolve the issue. Its a shame that I've already sold the HTC Desire.

Got simlar problem:
i use GNex hotspot to connect a tablet to internet (it's the tablet part of the Erisin EA779A car stereo) and after few minutes the tab gets disconnected.
i've tried to connect it to my old Nexus S usinf hotspot wifi and the connection seems to be stable
Both Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S have cyano9 nightly
I was wondering if the issue is just caused by a switch from 2,4ghz signal to 5ghz...
i have to try with another device connected to the phone to see if it drops
Alright,
that might be very tricky but it would be awesome! Following situation: Me sitting in a sub, galaxy nexus in my pocket and the nexus 7 in my hands. Now, I would like to activate Tethering via the tablet on my galaxy nexus and be online 5-6 seconds later. Anyone an idea?
Thanks for your input!
Found myself in the same situation yesterday in the coach on the way home from work. Had a lap full of nexus 7 and earphones whilst trying to pull out my GNex out of my pocket hoping that the driver doesn't slam on the breaks!
Have just decided to leave tethering turned on on my GNex and when I pull out my tab, just flick on the wifi so it connects. Not ideal on battery for the GNex but it works.
I use bluetooth tether on my vision.
Find it saves a lot of battery power.
I leave the 2 devices connected constantly, for tablet talk, and just leave the option to allow bluetooth tethering turned on on my vision.
So when I don't have wifi, I just tap 'connect' on my n7 and I'm good to go

I've had the same irritation using wifi hotspot function with my GS2. Just tried the bluetooth tether and it works just fine. Many thanks for this suggestion!

I stopped using bluetooth tethering because it would autodisconnect whenever a wifi signal was around and then doesnt reconnect. As for wifi it will stay connected and maintain positive connection longer.

I leave the Bluetooth Tethering option ticked on my Galaxy Nexus and connect with my Nexus 7 (via Settings > Bluetooth > tap on Galaxy Nexus) when I need to (or just place a shortcut on your homescreen).
The problem is that Bluetooth Tethering cuts out after a few minutes (known bug) and I have to repeat. But since it cuts out, it doesn't drain the battery at all (unless I am actively using the data connection, of course).
I suggest using foxfii and PDAtablet for Bluetooth tethering. A few apps won't recognize the internet, however you don't have to worry about it cutting out. And it still uses Bluetooth so there is less battery drain than WiFi.
Just always remember while Bluetooth tethering with whichever option to turn OFF your WiFi on the tablet. If not it will keep searching for WiFi even though your BT tethered, and cause data drop.

You could probably use Tasker to kick WiFi Tethering on on your phone when it detects your tablet neaby (via bluetooth), so when you want to connect, you turn wifi and bluetooth on on the tablet.
EDIT: Of course, you can also use Tasker to turn WiFi Tether on on your phone based on your location, the absense of your work/home wifi, the time of day, and many other options or combinations of options. It's a really useful app, IMO.

I'm trying a slightly different scenario. I don't want Bluetooth tethering, I want WiFi tethering but with Bluetooth connected so I can use Tablet Talk. It almost works. For a short while it'll work that way and then the WiFi drops on my Galaxy Nexus and won't reconnect until I disconnect BT again.
I'm probably posting this in the wrong forum since I've since determined the problem is with my GNex and not my N7.
I'm curious as to how people are using BT tethering though. In my experience there are too many applications that don't work over the BT tether. Are those of you tethering over BT just using the browser? Seems far more limiting than using WiFi tether... unless of course I'm also trying to connect over BT at the same time.

I've solved my own problem... I've use FoxFi in the past with my TouchPad and didn't find it any better than the built in Tethering. Today I installed it and the add-on on my tablet, and I can safely say that this setup rocks!

Well crap. I was wrong, I had WiFi tethering on the whole time. At least the connection isn't dropping for the moment, but this still isn't the experience I'm going for.

So straight forward but such a revelation for me!! I always hated tethering w/ my phone cuz it sucks the battery and it gets so warm, but the BT tethering is a great alternative. Now my tablet is relevant wherever I go w/ my phone.
+1 on blue tooth.
Whenever I use wifi hotspot for any length of time, my phone will eventually time out and cut the connection. Using bt it will stay tethered for hours on end.

I was curious about this as well. I briefly tried Bluetooth tethering a few days ago with FoxFi and PdaNet, but I noticed that although I could surf the net, I couldn't get Gmail to sync. I didn't try anything else so I don't know what else doesn't work, but is this typical of Bluetooth tethering?

Just tried basic bluetooth tethering and happily sent and received email
Is basic Bluetooth tethering simply pairing the phone and tablet and that's it (no third party apps)? I tried to do that and even though the use internet connection box was checked for both devices (they won't uncheck for some reason either), I couldn't get internet working, which is why I resorted to FoxFi/PdaNet.
Like I said, auto tether from the market is the best option

I know it's not rocket science. I consider my technically sound.
But for the life of me, I can't tether my Nexus 7 to my Galaxy S3 using both Wifi Hotspot AND Bluetooth.
With Wifi Hotspot, my Nexus 7 shows connected and has excellent signal strength, but I cannot connect to any website or access the play store. It's like no data is going through.
The same with my bluetooth connect. It shows it's paired and connected, but no internet data.
I called Fido (my carrier and they say I have tethering enabled on my account - of course it should be enabled cause I've tethered before)
Please help me with this.
I've tethered my N7 to my Evo LTE with wifi tons of times. Are you sure the phone is actually pushing out data? Try tethering your laptop or something to it to see if it's the phone or tab.

On another note... I'm on Tmobile and I tether from my G2 to both laptop and tablet, and I dont pay any extra fees
When you tether from bluetooth, pull down the notification drawer and look at the bottom.
Does it say "Bluetooth Tethered" or does it say "No Internet Connection" instead?
For me, I know even after pairing my phone and my tablet, I have to go into Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > Tethering and Portable Hotspot > and check off Bluetooth Tethering.
And after that, sometimes I have to go back to the bluetooth menu of either device and click on the other device so it actually connects.
If its working, you should see the words "Connected" below your phone in the bluetooth menu of your tablet.
And the notification drawer should say "Bluetooth Tethered"
Not sure what may be wrong with your wifi hotspot though.

I called to check and the rep says I do. But he does sound like a newbie though.
I'll call back and see if another rep (hopefully more knowledgeable) can assist me.
Thanks for all who chimed with your suggestions. I will press thanks for all of you.
I called back Fido and everything seemed normal. Tethering was enabled as it always should on my account.
What he did was push some information to the server which I guess automatically sets up my phones settings to match up with Fidos settings. Told me to power cycle for 30 seconds after we hung up. I did so, and after it started up, I heard a notification on my Nexus 7 which I knew instantly that whatever he did worked.
On my tablet I use PDAnet from the Play Market.
On my phone I use FoxFi from the Play Market.
Both Apps are free & usually do not require ROOT on either device.
1) Once both Apps are installed turn on Bluetooth on your tablet. (Find your Settings App either in your App Drawer or by pulling your Notification Bar & selecting the Settings button next to your rotation lock.)
2) Open PDAnet on the tablet.
3) Hit CONFIGURE in the main screen of PDAnet.
4) Select ANDROID (BLUETOOTH).
5) Now open FoxFi on your phone.
6) Check the box next to ACTIVATE BLUETOOTH DUN. This will turn on your Bluetooth & make your device discoverable.
7) A warning box will appear. Select YES.
8) Go back to your tablet & PDAnet.
9) Hit the option to start scanning.
10) After a few seconds your phone should appear.
11) Select the name of your phone. Mine was ADR6350.
12) On your tablet select CONNECT.
13) A warning will appear. Check the box that says I TRUST THIS APPLICATION. Then select OK.
Open your tablet's Chrome Browser & try opening a website. You should be up & running now.

Do not worry, just set yr phone hotspot security to WEP ,it should work. I faced d same problem with you in d begining. Try it!
On my Nexus 10, about 2 weeks old, and running most current version of Android, non-rooted, I can connect to wifi networks, but I do not have access to the internet. It just started today after having no issues whatsoever since I purchased it. It also just happened randomly today out of the blue. For further information, in the top right corner where the wifi "baseball diamond" is, the bars are that grey/white instead of the typical blue. Which I know means that I am connected to the network but without internet access. I have tried restarting my device both powering it off and on, and simply restarting it by holding down the power button. I have tried turning wifi off and on. I have tried the same with airplane mode as well. None of it has worked. I was wondering if anyone knew of any fixes for this issue? Thanks and any help is appreciated.
First I would get the IP of the nexus by long pressing the Wi-Fi network.
Then go on your pc connected to the same router and ping the ip.
For Windows, press Windows, type cmd.exe, enter, then
ping 192.168.1.x
But put in the real address instead.
If you get a reply with a ms value, your tablet is really connected.
If it times out or you get 100% packet loss, then it really isn't connected, or is unresponsive on the network.

When the bars are grey it doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have internet. The bars only turn blue when you are connected to the Google Talk servers. They are blocked at my work but I still have internet access with grey bars.

The ping had nothing to do with it working again, it was just a coincidence. You're having the same wifi problem a lot of us are suffering.
it has to do with the dns settings of the network I am using. And it just seems to come and go in terms of working. Hopefully it is fixable problem within the software
I am having a similar problem, but it happens sporadically and oftentimes fixes itself after about 30 seconds. Is this a known problem and is it hardware? Also, sometimes when I go to open the play store I will get a "No connection" message with the option to retry even when I am fully connected (blue bars and everything). The retry almost always works too. I am curious why this happens and if the two issues are related. Thanks for the forum, folks.

Yes, this is a known problem many are experiencing and is most probably software, unfortunately google seems to have a hard time getting their fat fingers off their arse.
Same issue has been driving me crazy. I have to turn Wifi off and on again.
The other, really annoying issue is that when I turn Wifi on in my bedroom, it still connects to the living room router with terrible wifi reception, instead of the nice strong signal from the office router just next door, I have to tell it explicitly connect to the office one.
