[HowTo] Install CM7 and UrukDroid(1.6) to speed up the device - Gen8 General

I have tested all this on my Archos 101 IT
CM7 and UrukDroid are two of the best and fast, ROM's I have come across.
This is a full, and step-by-step guide for all those newbies around.
For installation of the two ROM's, you MUST HAVE THE ARCHOS SDE.
To install the Archos SDE:
Step 1: Go to archos support and under Developer Edition section download and accept/agree to whatever they say. Warning - This will void your warranty!
Step 2: After downloading the .aos, reboot the archos, and when it is on the black screen, hold down the volume down button, until you see a white screen, which is the recovery menu.
Step 3: Go to Update Firmware using the volume down and up keys as navigation, and use the power button to select.
Step 4: Connect your archos via USB, and transfer over the .aos file. Select OK, after the transfer is complete and follow on-screen instructions.
Warning - BE SURE TO SAFELY UNMOUNT!
Step 5: After the update is complete, it should boot into the SDE.
Install guide for UrukDroid -
UrukDroid is a much faster and lighter version of the stock firmware. It is based on android 2.2, FroYo.
Step 1: Navigate to the UrukDroid main page.
Step 2 Go to code.google. com/p/urukdroid/wiki/Download (remove spaces) Scroll down, and download the UrukDroid 1.6 Easy Install. Make sure you took the INSTALLATION PACKAGE, NOT UPDATE PACKAGE
Step 3: The file should be a .rar. Power on your Archos in Recovery mode[Holding volume down button], connect Archos to PC and goto "Recovery System"->"Developer Edition Menu"->"Flash Kernel and Initramfs".
Step 4: Copy over the zlmage and initramfs.cpio.gz. You will see the Archos flashing the new kernel. After it is complete, press the power button to reboot.
Step 5: Get the Archos into recovery mode once again, and choose "Developer Edition Menu". Here, if you choose Simple install, urukDroid will be installed to your SDCard. By doing this you may get many errors like "Force Close" or slow perfomance. Installing to internal storage would be much, much faster, but they say less safer. Till now I have had no trouble with installing to internal storage.
For installing to SDCard : Select simple install
For installing to Internal : Choose advanced. Choosing this will ask you to resize a existing partition or create a new one. Your choice.
Then, you will have to choose the size of the partitions. I took the most, 1GB and 2GB
Once you have selected the installation method, you will see the UrukDroid installation framework. Say yes to install, and connect the Archos to the PC, and transfer UrukDroid-install.tgz.
Step 6: Once transferred, Safely unmount and press the power button.
Step 7: UrukDroid Easy Install will now check the file.
Step 8: You should now boot into UrukDroid. It will take a few minutes to set up. After it is done, finish the configuration wizard.
Step 9: Make sure you keep the Wifi Manager and the file explorer, as the stock applications of Wifi and File manager do not work.
Done, you are now booted into UrukDroid. Enjoy the speed :fingers-crossed:
To install Market:
Google ArcTools, and install. Choose the market version, download, and install, then reboot. You will get the Android Market, which will be updated to Play Store in a few minutes.
Installing CM7(Cyanogen Mod)
Step 1: Navigate to openaos .org/wp-upload/gen8/2012-04-09/ (remove space) . Download all files(md5 checksum optional).
For installing MultiBoot menu(needed)
Extract kernel_gen8_20120409_002900.tar.gz to your desktop with an application like WinRar for windows.
Step 2: Boot your archos into Recovery mode, connect to PC and goto Developer Edition Menu -> Flash Kernel and Initramfs. Copy the zlmage and initramfs, and be sure to SAFELY EJECT.
Step 3: Press the power button once, when the update of kernel is finished. Once reboot is complete, go into Recovery once again.
Step 4: Connect your archos to pc. Goto "Recovery system" --> "Repair System" --> "Start USB MSC".
Step 5: Copy over the Gingerbread image, and make sure that the name is exactly "openaos-gingerbread.img.gz" (Without " ")
Step 6: Next, extract the data image into the root of the archos. - There are 3 images in the archive, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB. Choose the size you like. If you don't do this, 256MB image will be created, but first boot will take much longer. The bigger the more faster. Choose which image size you want, and rename it to "data.img" (Without " ")
Step 7: Be sure to SAFELY EJECT! After all transfer is complete, click reboot(with power button) on the Recovery menu. While rebooting, hold down the volume button, go into Recovery and select SDE(This is for bringing up the multiboot menu)
- Way for booting directly into multiboot -
Goto Recovery menu -> Developer Edition Menu -> Remove Android Kernel.
Warning: You won't be able to update stock firmware with OTA anymore. Read the warning onscreen too.
- Get Google Play Store -
In bookmarks on stock browser, there should be the link wiki. cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version/Google_Apps (Remove the space after "wiki."). Follow the link, and scroll down to where the files for download are. TAKE THE CM7 VERSION. Place the. Zip in the root, and reboot. Cm7 will automatically install.
Wallah, You have now installed CM7 On your Archos. I prefer this to stock Firmware, and urukDroid, except that there is no support for the mouse and keyboard I connect to the archos.
Cheers!

Making HowTo guide for the first post isn't recommended because you can't post links. It will be quite unclear for the first-time visitor.

help.....

Ok now before I start... I did search and all that but im still kinda confused. Ok so I got a droid x and I want to root it and install the jrummy rom. I got z4root but im confused on the boot strap and how to install and how it works.... im not new to rooting as I rooted my droid 1 and droid incredible in the past. All info is welcomed and thanks in advance.
The bootstrap allows you to take and restore backups. You can also use it to flash update.zip file for themes/roms/mods
If you google koush dro id x bootstrap and search around on the forums here u can probably find the answers you are looking for. If you have specific questions post back here and I will do my best to help out!
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I am by no means an expert at android. I was really into Windows Mobile until the last couple of months but was fed up with what MS did with Phone7 -so I just made the jump to android.
Root with Z4root first. then first thing create a back up so if something goes haywire - you are covered. I actually create 2 just in case.
To create your nandroid backup go to the android market and get Droid X Bootstrapper...
1. Open Droid X Bootstrapper.
2. Click "Bootstrap Recovery".
3. Get the "Success" message. Click "OK".
4. Click "Reboot Recovery".
5. Your phone will reboot into recovery (not the factory recovery -a hacked recovery).
6. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-backup and restore".
7. Use the red camera button to hit enter.
8. A new screen will open and your cursor will already be on "Backup".
9. Use the camera button to hit enter.
10. Your phone starts the backup process (black screen with a small open box and a little android). It takes about 5 minutes to complete the backup.
11. When it is done you will get a "Backup complete!" at the bottom and will it will automatically go back to the first page and your cursor will be highlighting the "-reboot system now" option.
12. Press the red camera button to hit "enter".
13. Your phone will reboot.
14. You have created your nandroid
If you dont have the app "Root Explorer" you need to give up the couple of bucks or whatever it is and get it. You can try some free file explorer apps and see how they work for you -but Root Explorer is worth the $ and I will refer to it in instructions.
Flashing the rom... I will use an example for this rom...
Apex 1.3
It is the rom I am using. It is stable and functional. It uses the ADW.Launcher as a home replacement for Blur.Home.apk -so if you are not familiar with it it takes some getting used to (a little complicated as far as all the settings). It also uses the AOSP text messaging which I do not like (but it can be changed back to Blur.
You can use whatever rom you want- but the instructions will not be exactly the same. Whatever rom you decide on -MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS NOT MINE! Usually the first post of the rom thread will contain pretty clear instructions.
START WITH A FULL BATTERY!! I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY BLAH BLAH BLAH...
For example from the above thread...
-Place file on your sdcard. Bootstrap recovery and reboot recovery
-Navigate to mounts and storage. FORMAT data, and cache
-Return to previous menu and install .zip from sd card
-Choose ApeX and install!
Click to collapse
1. Download the rom.
2. If you use rom manager to download -you will have to find the rom which will be in a .zip file and it will be in some weird place in your phone's SDCard like
/sdcard/clockworkmod/download/fabdroid.com/downloads/
so you will have to move it to the root of your sdcard (meaning not inside any file folder -just on the sdcard.
3. So if you dont want to deal with that you can download from your computer and then place on your sdcard.
4. Open "Droid X Bootstrapper".
Click "Bootstrap Recovery".
5. Get the "Success" message. Click "OK".
6. Click "Reboot Recovery".
7. Your phone will reboot into recovery.
6. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-mounts and storage".
7. Use the red camera button to hit enter.
8. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-format data".
9. Hit enter (camera button).
(From here I am working on memory as I do not want to physically reflash the rom - so the instructions will not be quite as 100%)
10. You will get a "Are you sure?" message.
11. Go down to it and hit enter.
12. The phone will take a moment to format the data.
13. Use the same process to "-format cache".
14. Use the back button (the physical hardware back button) to return to the previous screen.
15. Go down to "-install zip from sdcard"
16. Hit enter.
17. Now all the files on the root of your sdcard will be listed. It is crucial that you placed the rom file on the root of your sdcard so that you can now choose it from the list. If there is no file to choose -you just completely screwed up and will have to perform the sbf. So hopefully you don't do that.
18. Use the volume button to select the Apex rom.
19. Hit enter (the camera button). I can't remember if you get a warning here - if you do - of course you want to confirm.
20. The new rom will load up.
21. If it does not automatically reboot then "-reboot system now".
The first boot up will take longer than usual. You will have to set up your phone all over again. If you have set up your phone properly then all your apps will download from the market automatically. If you have not set up your phone to do that than you will have to manually find your apps and download them.
Hopefully you are using Google to store your contacts and not Backup Asistant and the regular phone contacts. If you are using Google then your contacts should automatically be added back. If not then you are on your own bc I don't mess with Backup Assistant.
That is the best I can do with out physically flashing the rom and...
EVERY ROM HAS ITS OWN SPECIFIC INTRUCTIONS
You can use this as a guide but make sure you do what the rom developer says.
He pretty much explained everything you need to know, LOL
I personally like Darkslide V4. It is a very sweet ROM, but try different ones out and see which one suits you best.

it is also good practice to make a Nandroid backup before flashing any custom ROM
Install Custom Font
Credit goes to churapa. Nice work Bro!! Original Guide HERE
**ROOT Is Required for this
**ALWAYS make a Nandroid Backup before attempting any Mods
-Things you will need:
-True Type Fonts(both Normal and Bold .ttf)
-ADB Tool and knowlege of use
-Required Drivers for proper communication between PC and Android
1: Copy both fonts (normal and bold) into folder named Androidfonts
2: Rename fonts to DroidSans and DroidSans-Bold
3: With the phone off Enter Recovery mode by holding Volume Down key and press Power, select Recovery from the list
4: Once in Clockwork Recovery choose "Partitions" and select "mount system"
5: Connect Phone using Data Cable and run ADB Tools in CMD (c:\Android\Tools)
6: now in CMD window enter the following command:
adb push c:\androidfonts\DroidSans.ttf /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf ENTER
adb push c:\androidfonts\DroidSans-Bold.ttf /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf ENTER
7: Now exit CMD, unmount phone in Partitions menu, Go Back, Reboot Phone, Disconnect USB cable
Enjoy your new font!!
NOTE: Respectively you can backup your current fonts by entering the following in ADB:
adb pull /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf c:\androidfonts\backup
adb pull /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf c:\androidfonts\backup
How to Sideload 3rd Party Apps:
(Rooting NOT required for this)
Download SDK Tool HERE
1: Un-RAR Android folder to root directory on PC (ie: C:\ )
2: Open CMD Prompt and type CD\ and hit Enter
3: Now type cd\android\tools Enter
4: Plug in Data cable and choose "Charge Only" on phone (always choose this)
5: Now in CMD prompt enter this command: adb install barcodescanner3.4.apk and press Enter
The SDK tool should install the Barcode Scanner app on the phone. Yay!! Success!!
**You can use this method to install .apk downloads onto the phone. For this demo i had already inserted
the Barcode Scanner app into SDK tools folder. the actual command should read as follows:
adb install c:\path to .apk file (ie: adb install c:\apps\filename.apk)
**I chose this app because you can use it to install other apps by scanning the barcode
found on many HTC App sites.
How to apply ringtones over 300kb limit:
Short story first
I wanted a nice free app to manage files, so i installed Astro File Manager using Barcode app from above.
While moving some files around i discovered the option to set mp3's to ringtone... and it worked!!
This is good because i was not happy to see there was a 300kb limit to ringtones. There may be another
or better way, but this is how i did it
1: Go to Astro app website HERE
2: Scan the Barcode with Barcode scanner app to install Astro Direct link HERE
3: Open Astro, navigate to SD Card\Mobile\Music
4: find the music file you want set to ringtone, Hold on it until menu pops up
5: Select "Music Options", select "Apply as Ringtone"
or if you dont wanna go through all that hassle, install Rings Extended App. Direct Download HERE
How to remove unwanted Stock Apps using SDK:
1: Once your phone has been rooted with Clockwork, boot into Recovery(hold volume down/press power)
2: Open CMD prompt, get to the "android\tools" directory
3: In recovery window highlight "Mount System"
4: Plug in data cable, in CMD type adb remount
5: Now enter adb shell
*you can view the list of apps stored in the phone by entering ls
6: To remove an app enter the following: rm whateverapp.apk, then enter rm whateverapp.odex
(example: rm HtcFacebook.apk ENTER then rm HtcFacebook.odex ENTER)
7: Type ls again to confirn they have been removed, reboot phone.
*NOTE: you may get 0.0dip listed in Widgets menu. simply go into Manage Apps and locate HTC Sense. Open it and "clear data". your display settings will be reset to factory, but it gets rid of the false data.
Stay tuned!! More to come
Nice tut I could easily follow it

done Bro, added a revised version to the main guide
tested it out on my Aria first, everything worked perfectly.
Hey Zed,
You might want to add to the Font section that you can change your LockScreen font using exactly the same method, but the font for the LockScreen is named Clockopia.ttf -- I'm sure anyone who changes their fonts will want that one changed too.
Also, on the pull command to back up your fonts, you need to add a \ after backup. I did it your way and it wrote the fonts into a file called backup. Then each time I entered it again to back up another font, it overwrote the previous one. Maybe the pull commands should also be moved up into the actual instructions instead of a footnote too, in case someone doesn't read all the way through before starting the process. It will be too late if they have already followed the instructions in their current form.
These are just suggestions, not criticism. Love the thread, thanks a lot for creating and updating it!
Thank you so much for this thread. It made rooting my Aria and putting on the latest liberated froyo ROM super easy. I was a root/custom rom virgin before yesterday!
I'd also add a rom list so people can stay updated.

[Q] first time root and flash

ok so there are so meny threads and videos around about rooting and flashing a new rom, my proplem is that i am not an expert, they all give different info, programs to use ect... im a little nervous that i might use the wrong program or miss something and wind up with a brick...
i am using an acer a501 running android v 3.2
so if i understand correctly i need to.....
1.revert back to andriod 3.0.1 (not sure how yet)
2. download iconiaroot1.3, unzip, copy it to sd card (settings set to allow unknown and debug on)
3.install iconiaroot on tablet
4. open and run iconiaroot
5. now rooted
im i correct? did i miss something?
ok assuming all that is correct can i now flash a custom rom?
if so is the process similar? install rom onto sd card and install?
Correct. Just one step more
6. Before installing custom ROM you will need to install Acer Recovery Installer and flash custom recovery.
Root A501
Download a file manager if you don't already have once such as astro file manager or es file explorer. Also download Acer Recovery. Download both of these from the market.
Step 1. To downgrade to 3.0.1 to be able to root first thing you want to do is download this file here
http://depositfiles.com/files/64bo1ivat
Step 2. Once downloaded it copy the update.zip file into the root file of your sd card. the root folder on the sd card is in the tablets internal memory not an external sd card.
Step3. Turn off the tablet and once turned off press and hold the power button and volume down button. Don't release until you see the green andriod with the gears moving.
Step 4. Once tablet has booted back up check to see which version the tablet is running. To Check go to settings....about tablet...and underneath android version make sure the tablet is running 3.0.1
Step 5. If the tablet is running 3.0.1 then download this file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228
This is a link to a xda thread that has iconiaroot-1.3.apk.
Step 6. Download iconiaroot-1.3.apk
Step 7. Before opening iconiaroot make sure in settings....applications that unknown sournces is checked then click development and make sure usb debugging is checked.
Step 8. Now open iconia root and hit root.
Step 9. Run acer recovery
Step 10. Select clockworkmod recovery and instal recovery image.
Step 11. Click this link
http://depositfiles.com/files/vwaavz1pa and download TLSS_A501_3.2_Little_Honey.zip
Step 12. Once downloaded you will have 1 zip file. Rename it update.zip and transfer it do the tablets sd card.
Step 13. Turn the tablet off. Then press power and volume down to run cwm.
Step 14. Once at cwm screen use the volume buttons to go up and down. go down and instal from sd card and hit power to select it. Then select apply sdcard/update.zip then select yes and it will instal
Step 15. Once update is done go back and click reboot system now
Step 16 Go to settings about tablet and double check your updated.
Step 17. Have Fun!!!!
Hey I am trying to root my acer, and ive followed all of these directions up until step 11.. The honey.zip file tht is provided isnt installing. Ive tried installing from the internal sd and the external sd with no luck, I think the file itself may be corrupt. Do I NEED to do this update before I can flash a custom rom?
It looks that Honey.zip IS a custom ROM (don't know for sure).
You're rebooting into recovery and trying to install from sdcard?
Are you receiving any errors? What exactly is happening?
Don't bother renaming to update.zip.... Just select "Install zip from sd card" in CWM...
And no, you can use ANY custom rom at that point...
Remember to wipe all data before flashing
cache - dalvik- battery stats -flexrom etc. etc.
Obviously, you should backup your data previously and then you can restore them

Step by step procedure to root mz601 and flash ics custom rom.

Note: please read this procedure carefully more than once until you are fully aware of it. If you have any doubts or concerns, just ask to avoid confusion before you apply. This should be followed step by step.
• Your custom ROM will be: Eos-umts_everest-71.zip. This is the latest ROM released on May, 2012. Very stable and everything works with it. No issues found. http://goo.im/devs/teameos/roms/nightlies/umts_everest/• Your GOOGLE APPs (GAPPs) would be: gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip http://goo.im/gapps
Full thread in details can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1459641
To summarize:
First, download the above ROM and GAPPs and put them onto your xoom internal and external SD card. Put them under /mnt/sdcard for internal sd, and under the root of your external sd card.
To download:
• Get the Motorola USB drivers to your laptop: http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/
• Get the Android SDK to your laptop: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
• Recovery Image: http://goo.im/devs/teameos/recoverie...ecovery-r6.img
• GAPPS: http://goo.im/gapps, your GAPPs would be: gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
• ROM: Your custom ROM will be: Eos-umts_everest-71.zip. This is the latest ROM released on May 2012. http://goo.im/devs/teameos/roms/nightlies/umts_everest/
Steps:
1. Power off your XOOM device.
2. Press and hold the volume down button while pressing the power button at the same time. Note: Even if your xoom starts again, just keep the button pressed until you see "Starting fastboot protocol" on the screen.
3. Connect Xoom to your computer via USB.
4. Open a ‘Command Prompt’ or ‘Terminal’ window on your computer in your sdk/tools folder. This is the sdk you downloaded above.
5. unlock your xoom and flash the recovery image. The recovery image should be in your current working directory where you have command line navigated to: Type:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery eos-recovery-r6.img
fastboot reboot
adb reboot recovery
Now, you have your device unlocked and recovery installed.
Reboot your xoom by selecting the option "reboot system now" from recovery. you can navigate up and down using the volume buttons. Once an option is highlighted, press the power button to select, you will still have your old ROM.
To flash the other ROM downloaded above,
1. Boot into recovery by:
i. As soon as you hit the reboot command above, you should see a Motorola logo appear. Wait 3 seconds and tap the Volume down button and the words Android Recovery should appear on the screen. When you see that, tap the Volume up button and you’ll boot into recovery.
2. From within Recovery, perform wipe data, wipe cache, and go to advanced, wipe dalvik cache and battery stats. Don't worry, if the ROM and GAPPs are deleted, which should not be the case, you will have them on your external sd card
Note: wipe data will delete your stuff on the xoom. It would be great if you backup your files that you need to your external sd card before you start any of this procedure.
3. In recovery, navigate to install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sd card and select the EOS ROM you copied to the root of the SD card. Once the files are flashed, DO NOT reboot afterwards. Hold on.
4. Again, from Recovery, choose install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sd card and select the GAPPs you copied to the root of the SD card.
Then hit reboot system now. It will take 2 - 3 minutes for the first reboot. Setup your google account. and you are good to go.
Later reboots will be much faster (around 40 - 50 seconds).
Advice: purchase Startup Manager from the market. Remove unwanted user programs from the startup. That will boost the boot time of your xoom. and don't remove superuser or superSU.
To have better battery life, from the market buy JuiceDefender ultimate. configure it as aggressive. don't worry, it is ok. This will give you around 2 hours of extra battery life than the promised 10 hours. Keep that in the startup.
You may need after that to install terminal emulator from the market if not already installed by the ROM to check if you have root permissions. Just type "su -" you will be prompted with superuser check. Click allow. and then type "id" You will see your id is root.
Should you require further details or assistance, please let me know. And enjoy the best rom customized ever for your device
Best Thanks to TEAM EOS for the great ROMs they provide.
After you are done with all that, let me know and will explain to you how to work with the pre-installed gooManager in the new ROM. It will make your life much easier to upgrade to future releases of your ROM.

Use a file explorer, the sd card should be mounted at mnt/external1
That is right.

strange ... following instruction given above, i have fastboot oem unlock was success, as well as flashing recovery.img was also done, but I couldnt get recovery ??? it is still the same logo with an android gear and exclamation mark. What am I doing wrong ??
EDIT : I got it working, you have to immediately invoke recovery (via vol. down and vol. up key) following fastboot reboot command.
Yeah. Now after you successfully rooted your xoom, you can go to recovery by long press on the power button. Enjoy.
By the way, which rom version did you flash? V72 or v 74?

Sorry mate. I was away for some time.
Just use the key combinations of volume and power mentioned above in the steps. Get into recovery. Wipe cache and dalvik and reboot.

First, download the above ROM and GAPPs and put them onto your xoom internal and external SD card. Put them under /mnt/sdcard for internal sd, and under the root of your external sd card.
does this mean I need to create 2 folders to put these files on the internal and external card like SD CARD/ root and internal storage/mnt/sdcard, i cant see such folders right now on them.
Use astro file manager,
On internal SD: place the file under /mnt/sdcard
On external SD: place just in its root.
If you still can't find these paths, send me the output of the following commands using terminal emulator
mount
df

step 5 help
Hi am a bit stuck at step 5. In the CMD I try to put each command 1 after the other but each says error. I then try to put all on the same
Line and got the message to unlock the device on my XOOM which I did by pressing up and it reboot. The next part says to boot in recovery I try
Tha it started to boot and then I end up with the android logo with an exclamation mark inside n nothing else happen.
Am not a big computer savey and new to android. Please help
Thanks
It seems your device is not yet unlocked... your recovery IMG should be in the same path where your command line is navigate to, or else from ask path, flashing recovery IMG command should include the path to where it resides if it not in the same directory of where your cmd is navigated to....
