Bluesleep Fix / Deep Sleep Discussion - Atrix 4G General

This is a thread for the discussion of the bluesleep fix / deep sleep issue specifically for the Motorola Atrix 4g
There is a known issue with some roms that prevents the device from entering the deep sleep cpu state, which is ultimately responsible for a significant reduction in battery life. This is believed to be caused by a glitch in the Bluetooth permission settings. A fix has been developed (known as the bluesleep fix) which is thought to correct the problem, and allow the device to enter deep sleep. It has been suggested that the bluesleep fix will also correct a glitch that prevents the wifi from sleeping. I have not experienced wifi sleep issues myself, so I can’t provide any first-hand knowledge.
Almost everyone who has experienced deep sleep issues and has used the bluesleep fix agrees that it works. I have corrected the problem on my device on CM7, CM9, and CM10 roms. The increase in battery life was dramatic.
However, the bluesleep fix is not without controversy. Many people, including at least one developer, believe the bluesleep fix works and recommends its use. Another developer submitted his version of a fix to CM. There are others, including one whose opinion I respect, that believe there is no reason the fix should work and don’t believe that it does. There have been many recent discussions on the topic on CM9 and CM10 threads that you can search for yourself.
If you have used the bluesleep fix to successfully correct deep sleep issues, or tried the fix and it didn’t work, or strongly believe one way or the other, please share your knowledge and experiences below for the benefit of the community!
[The bluesleep fix is attached (flash with CWM) along with before and after screenshots for a CM9 rom on my device.]
[FYI, I was involved in some of the linked discussions under my former user name (Atrix_FauxG). I thought I should mention this to avoid any confusion.]
[At the time I posted this thread I was unable to determine who created the bluesleep fix. If anyone knows, please inform me so I can give proper credit.]

Edit:
1) I got confirmation from Th3bill that he wrote bluesleep_fix based on settings from olegfusion. Please take a moment to thank both of them (here and here). The bluesleep_fix file can also be found here (feel free to click on a few ads while you are there to further show your appreciation).
2) I neglected to mention that I observed the greatest increase in battery life on CM9 and CM10 roms.

Th3bill first brought it to our attention when building miui

Or not?
As for me, my battery life was always very good on the Atrix. At some point I came across this bug and the fix for it and I applied it just to be safe. I know what the fix does (basically it setuids a few bluetooth-related utilities and fixes their ownership) and I guess I can kinda sorta see how it would be possible that that fixes the issue. However I can't say I noticed any big difference in my battery life after applying it.
For the record, I went from stock ROM to CM7-RC3, then to CM7-stable, and am now on ABC.

Not sure!
I posted this in another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29854345&postcount=2154
After the full wipe and fresh install without the fix my Atrix is going into deep sleep fine.
I am using CM10 by epinter

Worked for me. I am using CM7 by the way. Before I implemented the fix, my phone never went into deep sleep. Now it does all the time.

Hmm,
Basically, mount /system rw, and chmod 04755 /system/xbin/hci*.
Not sure what the target rom is, but on my bell I don't have a hcidump. I have a dexdump though.
Cheers!

Yeah, that's not the one.
I think the primary target would be CM7 and all ROMs based on it. I have a CM7 based ROM and I have all three hci* utilities.
And yeah, that's basically it, like I said in my previous post. It setuids all three and sets their ownership to root:shell (0:2000).

As stevendeb25 mentioned above, the primary target was MIUI (CM9).

Ah, I see. Yeah, CM7 (GB) has all the proper drivers to support the Atrix hardware fully, my guess is that that's the reason CM7-powered devices are able to enter deep sleep state regardless of permissions and ownership of the Bluetooth utils.
Here's a screenshot of my current state. This is after applying the patch though, so I don't know if it's relevant really, but here it is anyway.

I never checked while on CM7.0, but for me CM7.2 did not enter deep sleep until I applied the patch.

Epinter's CM10 did not enter deep sleep for me. Though, the last update I applied was 20120729. Maybe he incorporated his own fix I mentioned in the OP in to his rom.

You should try 0803 build. No problems here. Epinter did not include any secret fixes to the rom because he did not mention it in the changelog. No sense in fixing something if you're never going to mention it. The blue sleep fix file is listed on his website, but not included on the rom.
This blue sleep fix file may have been useful on other roms, but is not needed on Epinter CM10.

I was on Epinter's 0803 build for a few days this week. No deep sleep without bluesleep fix.
Do you use bluetooth? If you don't leave your BT on then there are no deep sleep problems. I don't turn my BT off ever.
I have spent the last few days on Joker's CM10 and same thing - no deep sleep without fix.

This will fix the bluesleep problem on any CM7 device, but I don't think it will help your SOD problem and it could (in theory) make it worse. I have never experienced the SOD, but many users have said that increasing the minimum clock speed on your kernel to 456 MHz will help.

How can I revert back after flashing the fix?

Restore the backup you should make before flashing anything.

What I always do before flashing this kind of CWM zip is extract the flashable .zip, see what files it is going to replace or modify, backup my current version of them, replace the modified versions in the folder with my originals (renaming the originals to the modifieds' name, respectively, if necessary), zip it up, and there you have it! That Revert zip almost always works (never failed for me)!

[Q] SOD in CM7.2?

I am still experiencing occasional Sleep of Death issues with CM7.2-RC2. I thought this had been taken care in independent development before RC1; has the fix not been integrated into the CM7 repository yet?
Have other people been seeing this, too?

I has not been integrated into the repository for cm7. Look at my tips thread in my signature for a fix for cm7.
Hmm, I went to install the updated driver and found that it was already there. And now I see that it's in update-cm-7.2.0-RC2-encore-signed.zip:
1078520 Defl:N 430749 60% 02-29-2008 02:33 d968c8a3 system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko
This seems to be the same as the version in nookcolor_CWM-OC-SASDmod.rar.
Curious. Well, perhaps my unrelated reinstall yesterday will have fixed it...

What is nookcolor_CWM-OC-SASDmod.rar? Where did you get it? Whoever made it may have included the fixed module.
It's a collection of changes to make to a stock firmware zip, from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23009596&postcount=162
I just had another SoD, so clearly that version doesn't fix the problem.
But I managed to download your zip from Megashares (earlier it said too many people had been downloading it), and it looks to be significantly different:
969596 Defl:N 396999 59% 11-10-2011 14:21 367e274d system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko
So I'll give this one a try. Thanks!
Ah, I think I see what's happening. In the SOD thread on cyanogenmod forums,
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/32316-sleep-of-death-debugging/
there were two SOD fixes posted: One was the modified wifi driver from Embedded that your post includes, and the other was a modified kernel from dalingrin that is used with the unmodified wifi driver. I think the SASDmod bundle includes the modified kernel, so it also includes the unmodified wifi driver. But when I saw the driver in there I assumed it was the one I wanted.
Anyway, hopefully Embedded's driver will do the trick. Thanks again.

That's all true. The modified kernel helped with SODs but did not eliminate them. You need the modded kernel module to totally get rid of them. It's ok to use them together.

Totally unofficial CM10/AOKP/AOSP (and CM10 kangs) w. Siyah Kernel discussion thread

As some of us run CM10/AOKP/AOSP with Siyah kernel I decided to start a new thread because:
1. reporting issues with CM10 running Siyah kernel in CM10 thread is not good and slows down codeworkx debugging process - SO JUST DON'T
2. in offical Siyah kernel thread there are still more Sammy ROM users and it is not easy to follow.
If any mod, codeworks, teamhacksung and/or gokhanmoral has anything against this thread, oh well just close it.
Some of observations and solutions I have found so far:
1. CM10 (and/or kangs) work best with LF5 modem (some have good results with LG8 modem also) - keep both of CWM flashable files on your sdcard and test (in my case Sammy LG8 ROM works only with LG8 modem and CM10 only with LF5 modem). Also you should have (in most cases) have screenlock sound ON (in sounds) or otherwise the other party cannot hear you (if that is the case turn on screen lock sound via settings/sound and reboot, if it doesn't help, flash other modem, wipe caches and fix permissions - thanks to jnr21). More on modems here (thanks to UpInTheAir).
2. There seems to be some distortion with latest beta6 if audio settings are set at 63 and eq is set to eargasm. thanks to thyttel for pointing it out. Use default values or try playing with settings.
3. For memory leak there are 3 dirty solutions: reboot your phone every once in a while; disable lockscreen (thanks to codeworkx) or apply 'fix' (well its debatable if it's a fix, but..) from this thread (thanks to F1tty).
4. If you have no deep sleep (use CPU spy to check), try rebooting few times and/or disable media scanner on startup (there'ss an app for that - Rescan Media).
Feel free to add your solutions and report your issues.
All credits to Team Hacksung, codeworkx, gokhanmoral and anyone I forgot.
Memory Leak Fix
Thanks for the thread.
Using the memory leak fix on the RR JB Rom with Siyah kernel.
Hard to tell if it's working after two hours of use.
Will give feed back after two days of no restart.
thanks for the feedback. well it's not a fix, but temp measure..
had issues on RR with media scanner preventing deep sleep, but fixed it..
btw. siyah beta6 is out, so is new codeworkx build 0808.
so far so good, only wakelocks I have are from network location cause by google now, but that is expected.
@vels707: this may be good to add to op too: I you don't have on-call sound, turn on screen lock sound via settings/sound and reboot, if it doesn't help, try other modem, wipe caches and fix permissions.
This is known issue/solution, and i need to enable screen lock sound on every cm10 based rom with siyah kernel.

The memory fix method suggested in the other thread for the memory leak did not work for me.
I can confirm that the leak is caused by the lockscreen, because after disabling it i didn't notice any leak.
Using a third party locker app is not really that bad

Battery...

Hello,
After I installed ICS (JB or Stock) a had the problem, that the tab took about 80mA - 190mA from the Battery.
I'm monitoring the Battery from my HC 3.2 Overcome, and there the drain was about 20 - 30mA. So I'm not
happy with this Situation.
Then i tried the CM9 experimental from pershoot. And there i have the same low drain from about 20-30mA.
Now i want to know, why in Stock ICS the drain is 3-4 times higher than in CM9?
Can anyybody give me a hint about it.
I've tried it with a clean install, where i really only installed the battery monitor....

I think you use Stock Rom "XXLQ8" - italian ics??!!
If the answer is yes, the problem happens with me with this rom even with A! kernel.
I fix it by these steps:
1- Backup all your data....
2- Downlaod "JellyBeanRom ICS v6" from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813651&highlight=battery
3- Make a full wipe.
4- Falsh the "JellyBeanRom ICS v6" as Thread steps.
5- After the tab restart and finshing falshng rom, go to bootloader and make "Wipe Battery State"
6- I hope everthing is fine now.
Or try to flash another stock Rom ver with "Full Wipe Data & system"
This is my personal experience with this issue, and this is the solution that saved me
In CPU spy you will notice that the tab doesn't go to deep sleep for long periods on ics. If you have betterbatterystats installed you will notice that this is caused by a kernel wakelock 'l2_hsic'.
I reverted back to hc3.2 overcome because I couldn't find a fix for the wakelock. But ever since calling was enabled on ics I flashed back for this mod.
I am on stock rooted Italian 4.0.4 and only installed A1 yesterday and have had mixed results so far. If it continues I will probably try V6.

i've tried all "battery drain" fixes that are here reported.
Also clean installs and so on.
I think that sxi200 is right,
because i had also the wakelock "l2_hsic"
but i don't know what causes this wakelock btw. how to remove it.

Same here.
Flashed ital. ics over p7501 stock hc. Performance was quite nice, huge step foreward but battery drain went up to a couple of percentages per hour in the wannabe sleep mode. I took a look at it with cpu spy and the result was nearly no deep sleep! Even if my tab wasn't in use for the whole night ( only wifi turned on ) the cpu frequency stayed at 216 MHz. This results in a non usable tab for me because i wasn't able to use it a whole day at university without recharging!!
Yesterday evening I flashed A1's 1.7 Kernel over stock ital. ics and woooohooooo more than 6 hours of deep sleep last night (even though more than I had...) and battery only goes down 2 percent within this time.
From today I can tell that deep sleep works perfect until now for the periods of non usage.
BTW: A1 Kernel also solved my problem with flickering HDMI output on my TV!! Thats amazing but I'm going to post this in the seperate thread as well now.
Maybe someone could do me a favour and quote this in the official A1 thread in the developers section because due to the "10 posts rule" I am not allowed to do so..:crying:

MONFRO AOSP

This is a pure AOSP rom: it has no extra features so it can be snappy and smooth at maximum level.
Indeed the goal of this rom is to be as fast as possible.
- CM10 partition layout (422mb for data)
- Devil Kernel 1.4.1 VC (new kernels with new CM vsync available as addon)
- Devil Kernel Config included (and a init.d script generated with this program, to have everything set up stable at the beginning. If you set bigmem, before reboot remember to set 480 in videocamera settings, otherwise camera app will crash with bigmem). I suggest to install also NSTools, to have more overclocking and BLN options.
- GAPPS (updated to latest) are included
- I SUGGEST A FULL WIPE BEFORE INSTALLING THIS ROM, because added features from CM10, Helly Bean, AOKP and other roms can conflict with pure AOSP settings and functions

It's official, I'm in love! Soft keyboard type option in messages so I can "Enter for new line" and not have that dumbass key!!! THANK YOU

I have to say thank you, because your Lanight rom showed me how fast AOSP roms are, as you can see from my enthusiastic comment of 20.09.2012.
But on Lanight 4.0 there were some glitches, for this reason i decided to work on an AOSP rom. I see that you worked to fix Lanight while i was working here: if i would have seen your new rom build, probably i wouldn't have worked on my AOSP.

Message app is from CM: it works better than AOSP one.
AOSP message let you enter messages only of 160 letters, for this reason i decided to substitute it with CM one.
cant get radio working.....
Wifi and signal are not opening. Looked around but didnt see any other radios available? Am i looking in the wrong place? (in this forum) Other than that the rom looks great, but until I can get my wifi working i cant get a full picture of what this rom will be like... I am going to do some more reading. had this problem before, but flashed a radio and everything was good. Now I cant seem to find one. Call me an idiot if you will, just need some direction on where to go from here. The website i used last time has radios for ics but not JB.
Also shell was not given SU permissions. Bad flash maybe?
Thanks in advance....

Here you can find a lot of compatible modems/radio, find the one that works best in your area:

If you have problems with SuperUser, try SuperSU from Play Store.
Updated first post with modems/radio link and battery % mods.

Added mods to flash latest Devil and Semaphore kernels + new CM vsync
Your cappy looks promising because you are a recognized Dev. seems your also using same partition layout as of hellybeans that why can't flash this cappy on my captivate as I'm using broken sd device.

This rom uses the same layout as CM10: 422mb on fastest nand for data and the rest (slow nand) for system.
I am sorry you can't try this rom. I have read here and there about people with broken internal SD but i didn't entered in details.
another AOSP rom to test...nice......will test it soon.....

I've been on xda long enough, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. If my WiFi isn't turning on, would changing the modem affect that?
My Captivate has been relegated to my backup device, almost always used on WiFi.
From what I've played with on this rom, I like it a lot. Keep up the great work!
I have had similar issues with other JB AOSP roms with CM10 base. If I understand it correctly, it is due to the datadata partition that is included with this base (data partition table messes up the Kernel or something). To my knowledge there is no work around for this. Some of the AOSP roms here (LANIGHT for example) have a nodatadata version which solves the problem.
Hope this helps!

1. turn on Bluetooth, reboot, activate wifi and now it works.

So the problem comes from the Bluetooth kill function in devil kernel, which kills also wifi.
I suggest to disable devil idle and deep idle and to leave "enable Bluetooth " in devil kernel config app.

It is because of superuser, but there are no viruses inside the zip.

Flashing!! :fingers-crossed:
Hey Monfro, how is going the battery life so far ?

[MOD][addon.d] Not your Average BlueSleep Fix

There are a lot of zips floating around that fix the bluesleep issue on the Atrix, but I haven't seen any that implement an addon.d script. I made one and have been using it for awhile, and thought I would share.
What is addon.d?
On some ROMs, like Cyanogenmod, there are scripts in /system/addon.d that run during a ROM update or flash. They can backup and restore system apps (like Gapps), or perform many other functions. This mod includes an addon.d script, so the mod is not lost during a ROM update! If your ROM doesn't support addon.d, this mod should still flash properly, but you won't benefit from addon.d.
What is bluesleep?
Bluesleep is a wakelock. A wakelock prevents your phone from going into deep sleep. From my understanding, on the Atrix (and some other devices), when bluetooth is enabled, it will never deep sleep because it's bluetooth system is missing a few binaries. No deep sleep means horrible battery life. This mod changes permissions on 3 files, which fixes the issue.
Tested and Confirmed to work on:
CyanogenMod 10 epinter
It should work on any AOSP based Android 4+ ROM. Let us know if it works!
Install Instructions:
- Boot into recovery
- Flash Enable zip
- Reboot

DISCLAIMER:
This mod involves editing system files. Use at your own risk! Also please don't forget, before you report ROM related bugs in the ROM developer thread, you should remove this mod to make sure the issue is not caused by this mod!
Nice! But I don't have a need for a bluesleep fix... not yet at least great to see more and more people stepping up for development for our Atrix!
I always wondered y this can't be part of an ROM,.... looks like it is now
tnx

Great work
Nice. Installing it right away. My battery has been draining in the latest version of epinter's CM10 even with the existing bluesleep fix.
Hope this will resolve the issue. Great ROM and great work..:good:

I made one and have been using it for awhile, and thought I would share. What is special about using addon.d? It is a folder with scripts in /system/addon.d that run during a ROM flash. In this case, I made it carry the bluesleep fix through when you flash a ROM update, as long as the ROM supports addon.d (Cyanogenmod does)! No more having to flash a bluesleep.zip after every ROM update.
When flashing a ROM update without addon.d:
- flash ROM
- flash Gapps
- flash bluesleep fix
When flashing a ROM update with addon.d:
- flash ROM
That's it! Works great for the OTA feature in epinter's CM10.

I don't think this will ever be integrated into CM. This issue is controversial to begin with about whether or not it's actually an issue. Your best bet: if your device (not just Atrix) doesn't deep sleep, flash this mod and see if it fixes it. If so, use it!

Is this CM10 specific or does it work for other roms?

If the "other ROM" supports addon.d, then yes, this should work great. If it doesn't support addon.d, then there is no advantage of using it over any of the other bluesleep zips floating around.
Updated zips. It should work on ROMs that don't support addon.d now too. You just won't have the benefits of addon.d.
My download links will be broken for awhile. Goo.im is having issues, and they are working on it. More information can be found here: https://plus.google.com/103016236037938342074/posts/iWu73keEHtW
In the meantime, if you need a file ASAP, PM me.
Thank a lot for this. Really appreciate it.
