Howdy
So what's the deal with the profiles in ICS? I'm not sure exactly how they could be used to be beneficial. I just returned after a hiatus to BlackBerry who I must say had the profiles settings down perfect. I use to use android but since then things have changed. It seems the sounds settings menu and profiles should be combined into one settings area or something.
How do you all use profiles? Maybe that will give need insight into how I can use it. I love changing the ringtone based on the app (ie different tones for Google chat, sms, Google voice, email, etc) and different profiles for when I'm at work or home. It's probably that the Google versions are so specific that I can't get my head around them out something. .
Thx.

Smart profiles and Quick profiles in Google Play may give you some easier control.
Unfortunately I never use profiles, so I can't comment over how they work in ICS. Anybody skilled in using profiles?

have you completed the demos/tutorials yet Mr Gates?
SMS Librarian.
A texting archival service. Allowing you backup and restore sms. Allows filtering by dates and contacts. restore some of your sms or only sms by certain contacts or certain ones in a date range or all in a date range.
allows exporting sms to pdf or rtf or html
with time stamping ( for court for a restraining order for example)
and you can keep archiving either by wifi or 3g or bluetooth or you could have it by plugging your phone into usb or whatever.
This is something android lacks in any decent from.
Working on the demos and tutorials now. It's pretty neat.

Once you finish those tutorials you will realize how limited you are in the type of apps you can create with appinventor.
Keep in mind appinventor was not meant to make full fledged apps but give novices an easier time understanding how to create simple apps and what goes on when needing to initiate calls during specific conditions/events.
I played with appinventor and still use it when I am bored, but as far as making actual apps, I do it in ms visual studio.

I got accepted over a month ago and it is a pretty cool setup. But until we can use multiple windows and rotation isn't broken then it is just a novelty.
But truthfully it is very cool, to program without knowing Java.
i could use an app that will give me bluetooth hid support on sense stock rooted rom, so we could use hid and not spp bluetooth keyboards on our devices.
cm6 roms supports this. but i want to stay close to stock
there is a company that claims they have an app for this but it doesnt work.

Is there a good book/tutorial etc for getting into android programming? I'm familiar with ms visual studio, so working in there will at least lessen the learning curve somewhat,
my buddy just went from his old blackberry curve(original) to an evo. he is wanting to be able to just hit something and block all texts/emails/notifications after a certain time of the evening and only allow phone calls to come in. he said his old blackberry he could just put it on phone only. is there an app or a setting to do this in one step on our evo's? i was thinking just toggle the network off. i would think that should knock out emails for sure but i don't know about gmail or texts.
not sure about an app but i am certain cynogens mod has a quite time feature that does the same function
Called Bedside (night clock) in market place... its a buck or 2 but worth every penny... does everything you needed
I work off hours and now only get calls/ msg's that i want and no others... the choice is yours
sweet dreams, timeriffic are both free
Mr call block and handcent..

Shameless self plug... Locale plus my Call Filter plugin. Some of the other apps mentioned can do it, but locale does a lot more and has better usability imho.
I believe Tasker can do that but don't quote me on that...

Anyone know what happened to the "Sound Profile" settings?
Where you could set up a different Ringtone/Volume/NotificationTone/Etc based on where you are?
Like a Profile, for Home, another for Office, another for Vibrate/Silent, another for Gym, or whatever you made the profile for..
I can't find it on the Nexus 4.

Definitely not on the stock images.
CM10.1 and others have profiles, or you could use an app like Tasker or Automateit.
Would like to know this to, but not looking for anything to automates the switching process. Would be fine if I could hold the power button then select a different profile.

Did Google do away with profiles? I've been using myTouch for years now, the Nexus 4 is only my 2nd android phone..
There are Sound Profiles feature built into the myTouch... but not the Nexus 4, guess google got rid of it, don't know why, its a really good thing to have.

Google didn't necessarily remove it just never added it in the first place. Your myTouch used HTC's Sense overlay on Android. While it made Android look completely different, it also added extra features not in stock Android. That was probably one of them.

Wish Google's employees that work on Android would read through some of these forums.. A lot of people on here have great ideas that would push Android far beyond other Mobile OS.
Like I would love a Sound Profile feature that would tap into my Google Calender; Setting the Ringer volume based on whats in my calendar.
ie: Work Calender, Turn Ringer off & Turn Vibrate On. Meeting Calendar, Set Ringer Off, Vibrate Off (Set to Silent Basically)
All the sound profile app I've found so far are lacking. Wheres the option to change Ringtones with profile? Soft Ringtone for Home, Loud one for Parties.

CM10.1 can do this, I live on profiles, but if you want to stick with stock Android, I *think* Tasker can do the same.
Hello everyone,
I have had the Nexus 4 for a few months and am for the most part happy with it. I am not a power user by any means, but the pure android experience has been very helpful to me. I just started a new career which required a lot of traveling to different locations and scheduling and the calendar and navigation have been like a godsend for me. The notetaking apps like keep are great too. Like having your own personal assistant.
There are few things I still struggle with, particually on the phone end. I tranferred my contacts over from a blackberry, I think google did this automatically. It takes me a while to scroll down to a contact(voice recog does not work great for names) - is there a "better" way to set-up your contacts for easier acess or to enhance voice dialing? I feel it takes me much longer to find a contact than to set the navigation system to a new location. Anyone find a good solution for this?
Thanks,
Rick
Hello... I'm new here too... After using a blackberry I missed the name search here on Nexus.. The stock dialer in my opinion is ****.. Try exdialer..

Start dialing the contact name on the dial pad, this might only be a feature on custom ROMs though. If you drag the list on the right, it should scroll faster, going by letter instead of one contact at a time. This should work on stock.
You can search for a contact. Also you can add favorites for faster access to them

What he said. You can search for a contact in the Phone app by name.
Just got my new note4 after playing with the iP6, as I do like using multiple devices to have good knowledge on most devices, but here is one issue I ran into. I have the dunkin donuts app installed (easier than carrying a card) and it works great. 3 nights ago a txt from the app came in at 3:35am with a good sale (something I didn't need to wake up to). 2 nights later at 1am another one.
So, I don't want to silence ALL notifications as I have SMS alerts from my datacenter, etc. so I am looking to see is there an app that will silence some apps or services, or specific things based on time/day?
Thanks
I would disable notifications from specific apps permentanrly. You can do that from application manager. You can also configure blocking mode to allow certain numbers (not sure about sms).

[SOLVED]
I saw that while looking around but it's show notifications, and I didn't realize the show really meant don't notify vs show.
Thanks for the quick and simple fix.
Give Tasker a shot. It might look a bit complicated in the beginning but there are a lot of threads and wiki pages which will help you get going.
