Using nexus7 as a keyboard for another android cellphone - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I looked and couldn't find anything related to this.. I'm looking to use my nexus7 as a keyboard for my cellphone via Bluetooth.. not sure if this is possible but figured I'd ask. Or vice versa, using a cellphone to type on a nexus7' that'd be cool.. any ideas?
Or it'd be cool if we could push and somehow get the SMS from the cellphone onto this nexus so I don't have to switch if someone texts me.. haha..

Tablet Talk.

I've been using WiFi Keyboard to type from my PC to my android phone, for when I need to type something quickly from a physical keyboard. This should work fine on a tablet too. You will have to select the input area on your phone before typing from another device.

[Q] Calling from N7?

Hi, I know there are many Tablet SMS applications, but I want to know is there a way to make calls from your N7?
Preferably using my normal contract phone number, so people know its me.
Im sure I've seen it somewhere on the web on a video I saw, but havent a clue what it was called.
Im from the UK so no US only apps please.
Much appreciated.
You mean by Sim or by Wifi? If sim, impossible.

No I mean a little bit like TabletTalk, where it connects to your phone for example.
I don't mind whether its VoIP or whatever, I just want to be able to make a call from my Nexus7, that uses my phones number.
IVE SEEN IT on a Video which makes it even more annoying.

Tablet talk will allow you to answer calls as well you just need a bluetooth headset connected to your actual phone, it works in the same sense as the sms you phone is still the one connecting you are just controlling your phone with the N7

Thanks for your reply mate,
On the Video I saw it was using some sort of VoIP and used the N7's mic, no bluetooth mic needed.
I know that the connection goes through the phone which is fine, as how else would it get the number etc, but I don't want to buy a bluetooth headset.
It may have been GrooveIP but I think thats US only any UK alternatives?
THANKS !
EDIT - It was GrooveIP, what is the difference between GrooveIP and tablet talk?
As tablet talk is made by an XDA user and would love to support them rather than a company.
I've used groove IP on my phone and it does work in Canada but the sound can be glitchy. You have to sign in through Google to set it up, haven't tried it on nexus though.

Can any1 provide a UK alternate to Groove?
Why is it US only?

It is possible to call from SIM if you have a N7 with 3G.
Some Internet providers have also an Internet+Voice option that you can enable. With a specific rom or application that can pop dialer I am pretty sure that you can make calls with your Internet/Voice SIM. I didn't activate the option but I did activate an Internet + Messages option and sending / receiving them work like a charm. I'm pretty sure with a Voice subscription you can do that too, but do keep in mind, if you have a SIM slot.

It is US only because of the laws that GrooveIP must follow. It is the same reason Google Voice is so hard to deal with, because Google provides it for free but has to dodge some laws here and there. Google may require payment after 2013 (they have secure 2013 as free, though).

3G N7 as phone

Anyone know if it's likely the 3G N7 will work as a phone when connected to a Bluetooth headset? I don't think other 3G tablets (Android or IOS) have this functionality enabled, do they?
I'm not sure on your question specifically. However, I wonder if the 3G will support the use of VoIP technology so you can use something like GrooveIP lite (via google voice) to make phone calls (as many do over WIFI) - the only problem being that it's not the most efficient use of bandwidth/min of talk time.
I dare say the 3G connection would support it so long as VoIP is allowed by your carrier.
I was thinking more of using it as a GSM phone replacement. If I have my N7 with me anyway, I could use something like this maybe as the 'handset'

Short answer is probably no.
Look up tablet talk on the play store though, as long as your phone is in your bag/pocket you could use that to do what you're talking about

Calls on HTC Flyer works. So maybe some devs will implement this feature...

I have TabletTalk. It's good for what it does, but I'm wondering if I can go forwards with essentially one device with 1 SIM (plus headset) not a tablet + phone.
I suppose I could "emulate" what I want with a small phone tethered to a WiFi N7 with WiFi, plus TabletTalk. But the phone will be running WiFi hotspot mode on all the time and battery life will be awful on it, right? Better to be able to use the tablet as a rather large phone and a bluetooth headset connected to it for calls. This scenario will also be a mess when I move to an area with it's own WiFi, as I don't think I can have the tablet connected to another WiFi connection at the same time as the phone. And I can connect the phone using Bluetooth for TabletTalk, but I can't use the Bluetooth connection effectively for tethering to the phone for data.

Well, I guess there's a chance it will anyway on the N7, but you'd have thought it would have been a promoted feature if it was going to be possible out of the box...

Nexus 7 GSM phone add on? Anyone working on this?

I find more that I am carrying around my nexus 7 so much, to the point where I could see leaving my phone out of my pocket at times...If I could reliably make phone calls on it using T-Mobile.
Yes, VOIP exists, but the lack of reliable latency over 4G makes "phone" service still essential.
Is there a way to hook up GSM hardware over USB to the Nexus 7 so phone calls can be made using a cell network? Is it something anyone is working on? Again, I'm NOT talking about VOIP, Google voice, etc.

Wi-Fi Direct with Beam

So I've really been enjoying my new nexus 4. But I've if the things that's bothered me the most is the poor implementation of beaming. For example when I try to beam a 30 second HD video I recorded on my nexus onto my brother's identical nexus 4, it starts up a Bluetooth connection. Am I missing something? I thought it was supposed to create a Wi-Fi direct connection between the two, which would been much much faster.

I tried for several hours last night trying to get wifi direct to work between my Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 and nothing seemed to work. I then found this app and it worked like a champ:

Bumping this.
How exactly do I use that app.. is it a necessity that both phones have to have the same app running? could someone please run me through the process? I need to transfer 100 mb files between my n4 and the gnex.
Took me a while but I finally got it too work. After adding the viewing device to the network I rebooted the source device (nexus 4). I was then able to see the target device from my Nexus 4. Then you send an invite from the nexus 4 to the source device. Accept and once connected you are golden. YouTube app ob nexus 4 actually then asks which device should display the video. I was also able to share media using BubbleUPnP. Hope that helps someone

You need to install Wi-Fi Direct on both devices. Make sure both have NFC on.
You can approach the problem in 2 ways (really only 1):
1) Link both phones to each other by directly accessing the app from the drawer first. Once a connection has been established, use your file explorer to locate the file (I use ES File Explorer) and long press it. You'll get a dialog box. Locate "Share" and then click on "Wi-Fi Direct". You'll notice it's sending when you see the Wi-Fi Direct icon in the notification bar.
2) The process is the reverse of 1; locate the file, long press and then Share > Wi-Fi Direct. It'll prompt you to establish a connection.
Speeds I've seen at most is 39Mbit between my GS3 and N4.
Be aware, certain devices don't like to accept invites. In this case it'll error out or not communicate with the other device. Send the invite from the other device instead. If it reaches this situation, the program may be buggy (both refuse to communicate with each other) until you force close the app using a task manager and disable/re-enable NFC.
An example...my GS3 doesn't like to accept invites from the N4 so I'm forced to send invites from the GS3 to the N4 instead.

Android Beaming is typically done using Bluetooth (for small files like pictures), hence why you see the Bluetooth icon pop up. I've sent files between my phones and thought it wasn't sending files. It's just ridiculously slow as is the nature of Bluetooth. Random tidbit here -- Samsung implemented their own Android Beaming protocol (S-Beam) to use Wi-Fi Direct instead of the Bluetooth connection.
Thanks a lot man! Got it working.. although having an app for it is still sort of clumsy. Wonder when google will finish up what is incomplete

NFC direction transfer without data connection

Hey guys, I have a Nexus 7 and a Galaxy s3. I found a car mount of my N7 and use the precached google maps on it while i drive, it's really cool!
Now, I deliver a lot, and use my s3 to get directions and want to use NFC to transfer the directions to my n7. I place the phone to the back of the tablet, tap on my phone and boom, my tablet says "getting directions". However, my n7 isn't connected to the internet, so it sits at getting directions...
I do no want to tether because...we'll AT&T is a *****.
Any way, since i already got the directions on my s3, when i use NFC to transfer it, the n7 wont look for directions and automatically get it from my s3?
Guess not

Not exactly sure if this is possible, but an (offline) maps app with NFC implementation would be pretty cool.. Are you sure there's no way to send it via Bluetooth? (I.e. another app that has this functionality built in) If not, I'm sorry but I'm out of ideas :/ You could try another offline maps app maybe? (Make sure it has NFC built in)

You could tether... there's no reason not to, especially small amounts.
