Heads up!!! Battery die? Wont turn on? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just happened to me today, hooked up to usb and ran wugs 1.50 root kit to reboot device then plugged in and works again! I know when I let my Gnex die, sometimes only way is to a battery pull and since we cannot do that to the nexus 7 I tried this method after freaking out.
Wugs root, advanced utilities *reboot* then plug the nexus 7 into the factory wall charger adapter and should start charging again!
Hopefully it helps others out there. :good:

Could It Be Bricked

I am in the bootloader but it is flashing saying battery low cannot program. I pulled the battery to truly get it to turn off, but no go. I had it plugged in all night, and the green light is on, but I am still getting the battery low cannot program message.
Any ideas to help this situation?
Steve
Edit: NM I figured it out. It needed to be plugged into a wall charger.
I'm having this problem too although leaving it plugged into the wall isn't helping.
Plug it into a wall charger, and then do a battery pull. Turn it on after that and you should be good to go.
Here's to hoping. It seems to be discharging in the bootloop, or just enough juice is getting through to power that, but not the battery. I'm gonna leave it in the wall for a couple hours and see how it goes. Thanks.
Oh and I just ordered another battery, I hope it comes with at least 50% charge.
It won't actually shut off afaict. After a battery pull it just goes back to the bootloop, and somehow I think that's preventing it from charging. I was hoping not to have to wait the two days until the new battery arrives.
This means you are still connected via USB to your PC. Connect to a wall charger and not to the USB port of your PC. When its on the wall charger you will not get this.
I appreciate your help, but something else must be wrong, as it is connected to the wall charger. After about an hour and half on the wall charger the bootloader still says battery low, cannot program. I'm just gonna leave it connected to the wall all day and see if it manages to charge. I can live without it for a day.
I've done that before while sbf' ing... U have to some how charge ur phone battery using a friends phone buy a new battery or take ur battery into vz & having them charge it other wise ur forever stuck w/the green light after that u will b good to go
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Oh plus it won't charge While in boot loader mode Just fyi
Oh & if u ever do anything w/the boot loader in the future make sure ur battery is at least @70% to b safe

So are you saying that if you connect it to a wall charger and do a battery pull that it goes back to the bootloader? If so then I cannot help. It will boot properly after the battery pull for me.
I meant it goes into the bootloop again. I'm attempting the USB cable strip procedure right now. I found it in the newb's guide up top. It's kind of scary but seems to be progressing. I hope I don't blow it up.
Will the guys at VZW charge me for a recharge? It seems, I don't know anyone else with a Droid X.
Ha! I did the rip open a USB cable, and connect the leads trick, and it worked like a charm. Now charging to full before I go back to Liberty 2.0.1 (at least until the official OTA for GB.)
Thanks guys for all the tips!

Man be careful doing this!!! I hope you have the battery out of the phone while it's charging. USB has 5VDC and this phone runs on 4VDC!!! There is a voltage regulator inside the phone to control this when it is charging.
Also if the phone will not boot it will not charge the battery. Sounds like you are in a bootloader error from a bad flash. The battery for sure will not charge in this state.

Yeah I did it outside the phone. There is no way I could weave the wires into those prongs successfully anyway. I already ordered a battery, so if I fried the batt, no big lose. I wasn't willing to risk the phone itself.

[q] otg cable causes total shutdown

I got an OTG cable off ebay and it said it was good for nexus7.
PROBLEM IS...
When i plug it in nexus7 Instantly, totally shuts off.
Will NOT turn back on no matter how much i push POWER....
UNLESS i plug my nexus 7 back into it's wall charger.
Anyone ever have this problem with an OTG cable?
Are you plugging in just the cable, or are you connecting something to it? I had my N7 reboot when I was screwing with USB power and a hard drive.
Hi. First I tried it with nothing at all. I thought it killed my N7.
Than I tried it with it plugged into my six axis gamepad.
Same thing.
No matter how much I would push the power button it wouldn't go on.
Plug in my Ac adapter and it boots.
I'm using stock, unrooted.
Any setting that can cause this?
Im thinking some wires that are not supposed to be touching inside the connector are shorted.
EBay merchandise is always questionable quality. Yours is shorted - send it back to the seller. He will sell it to the next guy in line...

...or get a new one, it probably cost less then shipping.
Check out dx.com, I got 2 adapters and one cable (all OTG) from there, and everything works.
Thank you. I'll get another. I'll let you know how it goes.
Oh, I have a question.
Is there an otg cable that allows charging of N7 while using with a gamepad?

With stock kernel OTG charging will not work.
If your Nexus is rooted, you can flash custom kernel (Timur's latest mobile kernel from http://rootzwiki.com/topic/37755-timurs-kernel-usb-host-power-management-usb-audio/). The one from faux123 (013) will also work, but charging mode must be enabled/disabled via script. In Timur's kernel it's automatic.
Then something like this will work (I use the first one, but ordered the second now):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-Host-OTG-Cable-w-USB-power-Male-Female-Samsung-S2-i9100-S3-i9300-9220-/261161262679?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3cce6c9e57
or
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Left-angled-Micro-USB-OTG-Cable-With-USB-power-for-i9100-i9300-i9220-i9250-N7100-/380553042368?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item589aba99c0
Hope it helps.
OK. .I guess i will need to Root than. The reason i wanted to use the OTG cable was to not Root. But since i can't charge while playing. (without rooting anyway)
I'll root and than i'll be able to run the controller off of bluetooth and charge.
Thank you.

does anyone know if a mouse using an otg cable will work in recovery mode. cracked my screen looking for a way to flash new roms but not dont want to restart my tab because im afraid i wont be able to get out of recovery. im running m-kernel 32a with multiboot.
I don't know but if you start a new thread your bound to get way more hits and maybe someone who knows would see it.
The CABLE was the culprit. Got a new one. It works. Thanks.
bringing this one back from the dead. i have a KNOWN GOOD usb otg adapter that works flawlessly in my nexus 5 but has the exact same symptoms as the OP, it powers fully off and wont turn back on without a wall charger or battery pull.
sincei know its not the adapter what other options do we have

My Nexus doesn't charge anymore after 4.3 update.

Hi,
I've juste updated my Nexus 4 to Android 4.3 and I've got a strange problem.
I've got an USB hub that was working perfectly to charge my phone (a little bit slower than a computer USB port or the official charger but still quick).
But now it don't charge. When I plug it the phone doesn't charge but when I remove the cable my Nexus play the sound like when you remove your charger when battery is slow. Anyone has an idea?
Charges fine here.
Did you try another charger?

Yes with the wall charger, a computer USB port or my Samsung power bank battery it works fine but not with my USB hub anymore.
And my girlfriend Nexus 4 is still in Android 4.2 and it charge normally.
Like if Android 4.3 need more juice than 4.2. Really strange.
Make sure that you are using the stock charger, sounds like that Android 4.3 needs more power.

This is really driving me crazy.
UPDATE :
If I let the phone charge on Receovery Mode or totally turned off it works perfectly like before.
I've seen on this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2378414
that perhaps it can be the new SUperSU for Android 4.3.
I'm still digging for informations
Mine is doing the exact same thing on latest 4.3.
Charged overnight on my wireless charge pad and it didn't move. Trying to charge it at work now via USB and it still wont charge?
I'll check that link you posted.
edit: I flashed the SU update from CF 1.43 and my phone is now charging? Link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43951641&postcount=5

I've updated to the latest SuperSU (1.44) and problem is still here.
Is it possible to be caused by some old files or settings from Faux Kernel from 4.2.2?
I really don't want to flash the full rom and lose all my settings and personnalisations.

Same here. Since 4.3 not charging on usb port when powered on, but charging perfectly when off.
I am still at work and can only charge via my computers usb port, but I expect it to charge normally with the provided charger at home.
Totally stock rom, so no SuperSU or anything to interfere.

I think you better clean flash rather than unable to charge your phone....Could be the previous kernel messing up your phone

No, I have flashed this zip :
cwm-boot-occam-JDQ39.zip
from this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43939424#post43939424
to revert back from Faux's kernel to stock and then I've used the offical OTA to update.
Mine is charging fine after the 4.3 update but I'm running completely stock unrooted.
I'm wirelessly charging using my Nokia DT900 charger as I'm typing this.
Also charges perfectly when connected by cable.
Noticed that I now get a sound alert when the phone is fully charged. I never ever got that before.

Get another charger or get a different kernel. Google likely added this to let phones charge more efficiently and prevent your charger from blowing up (the result of it drawing too much current).

I've flashed Faux's kernel 18 nad the problem is still here.
I'm gonna try to flash a full stock Android 4.3 tomorrow to see if it's a 4.3 problem or "my 4.3".

I currently have an issue charging when hooked to a PC, I was able to disable the "media device" option and then it started charging once I unplugged and replugged in the USB.
Steps to duplicate:
1) Connect phone to PC via USB with Connect as "Media device (MTP)" checked (Settings -> Storage -> Menu -> USB computer connection)
2) See that the phone is not charging.
3) Uncheck "Media device (MTP)"
4) Unplug and replug in USB cable
5) See that the phone is now charging.
6) Re-check "Media device (MTP)"
7) See that phone immediately stops charging.
Same here. 100% stock. No longer charges from wall at night (phone turned off).At 51% in the morning.
I'll try to do a full wipe.
Same problem here

I've got exactly the same problem. Updated my Nexus 4 to 4.3 yesterday. Now at work, I cannot use the USB charger from my work PC any more. Tried with different cables, same result. When I charge my Nexus 7 running 4.2 on the same USB port at the work PC it still works.
Can the Android Kernel somehow measure the amount of power delivered by the USB port and set the icon to 'not-charging'?
When I try a seperate USB charger (delivering 1.2A) it works again.

If someone as some free time and if it's possible (I don't know) can he try to flash the 4.2 stock kernel on the 4.3 ROM. It could answer your question.
After full reflash and wipe still wont load from wall charger when off. Have to try not turning it off at night because it seems to charge if powered on.

Thanks for the reply bro.
Everything worked just fine before the root and the Rom installation. The charger and the chord works fine on other nexus 4. Used samsung s3 charger chord as well it detects it as "Charging via USB" not "Ac charger" and if i charfe after shutting down phone. It boots into the CMW it self after dew seconds and stays there. Device heating up both ways.
try a different charger. they go bad and often. if its not producing enough voltage, then the phone will see it as usb. itll see anything as usb if it doesnt provide enough volts/watts.

Did a reset from CMW now while turned on it detects as AC charger tho charging took long. Turn off it boots into the CMW recovery it self.
Me too, using the stock charger it will charge as USB; but when using car charger, it will charge as AC... stock ROM + kernel.... try different USB cable also same, I suspect is the charger having some problem...

Galaxy s5 won't charge, please help urgent!

Phone had been acting up since Monday night . At first it wouldn't charge with the original charger on the wall outlet so I plugged in the USB to my PC and it was charging perfectly fine. Then all was good until yesterday night when it stopped charging on the wall. It started giving me some error about using a sharing cable (wtf?!) Then I figured OK maybe I should connect it to my PC. So I connect it and it wouldn't charge at first but then it did. Then I started looking up for a solution because I need my phone to work ASAP and it charges way to slowly on my laptop. Everyone was saying do a factory reset, remove the battery put bit back in, maybe charging port is faulty . Then I tried using another cable , I used my sisters s4 USB 2.0, connected it to the wall and it sort of gave it power for like 50 seconds then stopped. Now I'm losing patience here, I go back and forth between cables and wall to PC etc I gave up and turned my.phone off for the night. Wake up , plugged in the wire to my PC and the charging icon with the bolt in it comes on for 5 seconds then turns back off and comes back on . This repeats itself and doesn't stop. This happens when the phone is off and is connected to either the wall or my laptop.
https://youtu.be/wy-_i4Tl_7g
Tldr: phone doesn't charge at all. But when turned off, charging logo appears for 5 seconds then comes off and back on and repeats this cycle over and over. Still not gaining charge

Did you try buying a new cable and plug, also what Rom are you on.
Well right now I'm using a different cable and charger block , I'm using this very very small USB 2.0 cablebi had from a old Nokia and my nexus 7 charger block . And it's still not working. And I'm on stock Lollipop , updated my phone on Monday night ! Had the problem a bit before and exactly after the update to 5.0 !

You can find those on amazon for pennies on the dollar
Try cleaning the battery pins on the back of your phone or the battery itself... I experienced the same thing... All I did was file the pins 1 or 2 times and it got fixed. Or maybe try cleaning the USB port of your phone... Base on what you're saying I can say it's just a connection issue that needs cleaning.
