OTG - USB Stickmount - Sees no mount - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, OTG works out the box with the cable.
Mouse plugged in, cursor appears.
Rooted device.
Installed stick mount.
Inserted 64GB USB (ntfs formatted) drive/stick in.
I get stickmount - chainfire 1.5 searching...then nothing.
Going into Stick mount itself, select mount
Active Mounts - none.
Any suggestions? I'm new to android, so not sure what the next trouble shooting steps are.

Pretty sure the thumb drive needs to be FAT32 to work. Also, not all USB thumb drives work. try another one.
**UPDATE** Apparently NTFS can work, but again, not all USB devices are supported.

On this thread

Member Badgered had problems with the cables. They even worked on his S3 but not the nexus 7 turned out it was the cables. He got a 4th one to work.

Install the Paragon NTFS & HFS+ Beta app. I have no idea if the app is helping me, but I can read files off my 64GB flash drive just fine. One thing I noticed though, you sometimes need to unplug the whole adapter along with the USB flash drive. Simply unplugging the flash drive won't work, you might have to restart the Nex7 if it doesn't mount/unmount properly.
Just don't forget to un-mount from StickMount when you're about to unplug your flash drive, and when you're removing it, remove it with the whole thing (flash drive and adapter together).

Thanks for the updates.
Cable works with a mouse, is that a good enough test?
Hmm, I'll try with 3 or 4 other drives, see if it's that. FAT32 will be a problem though, as it's 4gb + movie files I want to watch

Works OK for me with a 32Gb Transcend stick this morning..

I have a SAN disk 16 GB usb drive. stick mount sees it, attempts to mount, says its mounted and creates a folder in /sdcard/usbmount/sda1/ but the drive is not mounted.....Im using ext4 and had to use busybox to manually mount using a terminal emulator.
You can try busybox mount, but its a bit of a pain to have to do every time, not too sure where to put an automount using the blkid value, but it could be done. typically in *nix its done in a simple line in /etc/fstab
what is the equivallent for android?

More of a "this combo works" than anything else...
Using this cable:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004TJC1IM/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
and this stick
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005KJJ50C/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00 formatted as NTFS I have had no issues, simply rooted and installed Stickmount, and it "just works".

EDIT:
I'd didn't see your first question.. I just used a basic *nix mount command with busybox
busybox mount /dev/block/sda1 /sdcard/usb
it's not fun to type in every time (without a real keyboard) but it does work, with ext4/3/2. And since in a pinch it gets the job done I can use it. I just know there is a way, to set this up to auto mount. In any *nix flavor it too easy, and but since this is a bastardized Linux I don't know how/where everything works.
I found some stuff about vold.fstab but the syntax was a little confusing for me. Will these auto mount or do hdd's only mount on boot from that file?

Mount problem
Used to work well except for being unable to unmount, but a restart would fix that and anyway I would get a usb stick mounted as sdb do it still worked.
Now, I don't know if it started after upgrading to 4.1.2 but I've noticed it since. Not even a restart would unmount it, I found a file probably left open on sda (only one file, left behind after plugging out the stick), and I deleted it, as well as the folder it was in. From then on I always had sda mounted and plugging the stick in again had no effect, I can't get it as sdb anymore.
I tried reinstalling stickmount, then I saw somewhere here that I should delete the usbStorage folder manually. From that moment my active mounts says none, it appears again when I plug the stick in but still none. Tried my mp3 player too, it was recognized but wouldn't mount either. i also tried another usb mounting app, it also recognized my stick, but pressing mount had no effect.
Any ideas please, I'm desperate?

Plugging in stick+OTG sees the stick flash before 'None' lets me down.
'Busybox mount' needs 'su' ISO Nexus7 being rooted.
It then doesn't see the stick anyway
Uninstalling Stickmount and then 'su busybox mount'-ing mounts nothing, too.
All the above with 2 OTGs and 3 sticks.
Bummer.

You could uninstall stick mount and reinstalling it to remove that issue. It worked out for my nexus 7.

It depends on the phone if it has otg support and if the rom is able to create a mount in the system.

Stickmount stopped recognizing sdcard after the recent JB 4.2.1 OTA updade.
It worked before, but quite often ES File explorer reported directory empty when card was mounted.
Root restored with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper after OTA update.
Checked root with Got Root, root OK
Not a cable problem, as Media Importer finds the card immediately every time.
Stickmount Pro uninstalled and reinstalled, no change.
Any suggestion?

I can't seem to get rid of two movie files that's on the Movie app. It's also visible on ES Explorer. It all started from using Stickmount. I've removed Stickmount app, and the files still shows up. The files can't be deleted. I can choose to delete it, but nothing will happen. Tried reinstalling Stickmount, and it keep stating the drive is mounted even when nothing is connected.
My N7 is rooted running 4.2.2 on CMD Roms. Had also tried restarting my N7.
Anyone got any idea cuz I really don't want to complete wipe and start from scratch again. Thanks

android phone restarts when pen drive mounted using usb otg.
my wt19i reboot when i pressed the mount button, the connected pen's light blink and the phone reboots.
but this happens in some times only, i think the problem may be in loaded modules.

[Q] How do you unmount USB drives with stickmount?

Stickmount works fine as far as it goes. The catch is that I haven't found a way to *unmount* drives with it. When I press "unmount", it just pops up the box showing mounted drives. To make things worse, If I unplug the drive, the next time I plug it in, stickmount generates a new mount point (sda, sdb, sdc, etc).
USB Hub Controller from the market lets me mount and unmount drives, plus I can specify the mount point, but it wont automount.
Any ideas for either app?
I usually just look in the notification area where it says "tap here to unmount" or something similar.

unmounting with stickmount works fine for me... do you have a single device plugged in, or multiples devices through a hub>?
Mine did this. Use your file explorer and navigate to your mount point. More than likely there is a file keeping it listed. I deleted the file (happened to be xbmc apk) and it unmounted fine.

I was have the same problem, but couldn't determine if there were any open files. I had been using an older 1 gig Lexar drive, first formatted to FAT32, then tried EXT4, then back to FAT32. In all cases, it would mount automatically, and I could browse, copy & open files on it. However, as above, unmounting only brought up the box telling me the existing mounts. After waiting several minutes, I removed the flash drive from the OTG cable, but never got an error message, though the sda1 directory was still there.
Getting nowhere with this, with the Lexar drive not connected, I deleted the usbStorage/sda1 directory (no error messages), then connected a different flash drive, a ~3 year old HP 8 gig model. Surprise - it works correctly. I tried it 4 times or so, and no problems.
Don't know what's going on there, but I'm leery now of putting the Lexar back on, considering all the problems I came across.
I'll try some different flash drives this evening.
Questions go in the Q&A section
I had the same problem. I resolved it by making sure that my file explorer (ES File Explorer) and the Gallery app were closed. Just like Windows, a USB drive can't be unmounted safely if an application is still accessing that drive. In my case I used ES File Explorer to navigate to the contents of the USB drive, and I used the Gallery app to view photos I had stored on the drive. Therefore, I had to make sure that both of those apps were closed. Some apps have a true "exit" option, but not all do. I make a habit of either hitting the back button repeatedly, rather than the home button. Some apps have an exit option in their menus. You may need to go to the Apps Manager in the Android Settings and force close running apps that may have been accessing files from the USB drive. I took the extra precaution of force closing the cached apps (not running), that had been used to view the contents of the USB drive. After doing that, clicking on the stickmount item in the notification bar successfully unmounted the drive. When I plugged the drive back in, it retained the same mount point, and I was easily able to unmount.

+1 for this solution. I was running into the same issue intermittently, and discovered that by fully quitting ES File Explorer (Menu > More > Exit), the drive would unmount properly. I can't speak for the closing of other apps since I generally just use usb drives for copying things to and from my N7, but I'd imagine GrillMouster is right and that anything that is using files from the usb drive needs to be closed before it can be properly unmounted.
Edit: Also, I discovered that once the drive is properly unmounted, the various folders that are created (sda1, sdb1, etc.) are removed and the next time you mount a drive it will once again be on sda1. At least that's how it worked out for me.
Will no unmount even closing the apps
I have a Nexus 7 with Stickmount 1.5. It works fine except that it does not unmount the USB drive when I tap the unmount option (or even removing the drive altogether). I have tried closing the applications I used while the drive was mounted (ES File Explorer and MX Player), but it still will not unmount. I had to resort to rebooting the device for it to forget about the mount. Is there a background app I have forgotten to kill? Maybe Stickmount needs an "Unmount, damn it!" option to unmount the drives regardless of what apps have locks on files in the drive.
Thanks for your help.

I'm running Stickmount V1.5 on my Nexus 7 (PA2.17/EliteKernel). The only way I found to truly unmount my flash drive was to first click "unmount" in the Stickmount notification and then go to settings > Storage and wait for it to generate the results and you should see an option to unmount USB storage right there... click on it, press "ok" in the pop-up and it will freeze for a few secs and then give you a toast notification (or drawer notification not sure) that says you just unmounted USB... at that point you can unplug your USB drive and you will get no "unexpected removal" message and everything should be fine :good:

This solution worked for me
Curious!
1) When I mount the USB drive and browse through it with ES File Explorer (rooted), no matter what I do afterwards (kill the ES File Explorer application and all the apps I used to access the files), I cannot unmount the drive unless I reboot the tablet.
2) But if I browse with Dual File Manager (not rooted), I can unmount even while browsing the drive.
3) And if I open the files in the drive directly with mVideoPlayer or MX Player, I can also unmount afterwards even without having to kill the apps.
4) But if I open the files in mVideoPlayer or MX Player through Dual File Manager, it requires a reboot again.
I think that there are some apps whose locks stop the Stickmount unmount (ES Player Explorer), while others don't (Dual File Manager, mVideoPlayer, MX Player); but if you open one app (video player) through another (file manager), it always stops the unmount.
I do not know what the above means, but I hope it provides info for the developers to know what is going on.

If you would like to see what app has what file open on your USB disk, use lsof in ADB/terminal. needs root. First, what is the USB mount? type in
Code:
mount
and look for your device. If there are too many entries, you can try this instead:
Code:
df -h|grep G
when you have the mountpoint, perhaps it is /storage/sdcard0/usbdisk/, the key is usbdisk. Now you are ready to search the open files:
Code:
su
lsof | grep usbdisk
now, I don't have a USB drive mounted, but I opened a .avi in MX video, and searched for '.avi,' this is what it will look like:
Code:
com.mxtec 23194 u0_a141 80 ??? ??? ??? ??? /storage/sdcard0/Matt/video.avi
so here you can see com.mxtec has opened video.avi, and the PID is 23194.
If that file was on the usb disk, it would keep it from being umounted, so to get rid of it:
Code:
su
kill 23194
I had an issue that's been nagging me and the above info kinda resolved it but not really. Had created a folder on my usb drive using stick mount. After renaming the folder, etc.. Still for a couple of weks even after ejecting the drive... the folder still showed up.. Killed various apps, etc nothing listed showing usbStorage... So while I was doing my usual cleaning through recovery mode with cahces, etc. I hooked it up to my netbook and got into adb and navigated to where my offending folder was and deleted the folder that way. Once booted back into the system, folder wasn't there anymore.

[Q] Transfer FROM Tablet TO USB Drive

Hi guys,
I'm getting tired of not being able to transfer files from my Nexus 7 [rooted] to a USB flash drive. I have Nexus Media Importer software installed, but it will only allow me to transfer files from the FlashDrive to the Tablet but not the other way...it's just plain dumb.
I usually download stuff via torrent to my Tablet and then distribute it to my friends, but when the files are over 4gb, bluetooth is way to slow and forget about the PC option, I don't have any PC to use...so don't tell me to transfer to a PC and then to the flash drive...
Any ideas?
EDIT: Also tried Stick Mount y USB Host Controller :/ NO LUCK!
Perhaps dumb questions, but since you didn't mention these details, everybody who reads your post is forced to guess.
1) Did you check the mount points (in each case) to see whether they were read-write (rw) or read-only (ro) ?
2) Should we assume that the USB stick only has a single partition, and that it is formatted in a FAT32 fashion? Or something else? What device/OS did you use to format the USB key to begin with?
If you are using any file system excepting FATx, the kernel you are using is also important - and you also failed to mention that.
BTW, I have successfully written large-ish files TO a FAT32 USB key on a OTG cable mounted via StickMount with a lightly-rooted stock N7 (essentially a stock ROM and stock kernel). "Large-ish" in this case is about 2.5 GB. (FAT filesystems are not capable of writing individual files larger than 4GB)
cheers

No dumb questions at all, I just started this thread really quick because I am at work and can't be 'on the internet' for too long.
1) I just checked and Nexus Media Importer says 'read only', I haven't seen that :/ (that's dumb)
2) The owner of the USB Stick tells me he formatted it with Windows 7 but never changed the format, it's FAT32 since he bought it. The file I attempt to transfer is 4.1Gb...
About the kernel and ROM, both stock and ROOTED.
The owner of the USB Stick tells me that he recently used it to boot Win7 and install it on a friend's PC and maybe that's why it is on 'read only'. I've checked for the usual 'lock' switch but it doesn't have one...so that must be why. Don't you think?
Also, I could never use StickMount..it just times out attempting to mount :/
EDIT: One more thing, I downloaded 'USB Host Controller' (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468531). I attempted to mount at /mnt/sdext and many other points but none of them worked...I'm using ES file explorer to look for the mount point but it doesn't exist.

No matter how you mount a FAT32 filesystem, you will not be able to write a file to it which is greater than 4,294,967,295 bytes in length (2^32 - 1).
Apparently there is something called "exFAT" that is intended for large flash devices, but it seems to be not ready for prime time with Android yet. (Search titles here on XDA for "exFAT"). Also, the Wikipedia page for exFAT says that it is patent-encumbered. That's a deal-breaker for Android I suspect.

[Q] Stickmount mounts went nothing attached

I have a Nexus 7 2012 and am running stickmount pro under 4.4 presently though the problem showed up in 4.2.2
The issue is that stickmount will mount a USB drive when none is actually connected to the device. I can go into usbStorage/sda1 and see an old file listed that at one time was on a stick connect to the tablet. This always happens at boot up and then randomly during use. I can still, usually, mount an actual USB stick but at times it will fail. Is there a way to "reset" stickmount so it will forget about this "old usb and file"?
When mounting a real stick it usually mounts it as sda1 but on occasion I have seen it mounted as another mount point.
When dismounting an actual stick it can take a number of unmount commands before it actually happens as it is "busy". Further, when it does do the unmount it will show the window but it will show that sda1 is still connected though I've learned over time that it seems to be fine to pull the stick as on looking into usbStorage it shows the phantom mount and not the one physically connected.
Any suggestion as to how to fix this. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't do anything. Nor does a cache/data reset.

How do I mount an external USB stick in OmniROM?

How do I mount an external USB stick? I thought it was under /mnt/usbdisk0, but it's apparently not. I can access this folder and create folders in it fine, but it's still there, and I can manipulate files on it even after I unplug the drive. Also, accessing this directory does not power on the USB light. How do I access external USB drives in OmniROM?

How does the SATV decide what directory it will mount an external USB drive to?

I keep noticing mine will change from one to another each time I reboot. This is really messing with Foldermount. Does it matter what other devices are plugged in? How can I force it to a certain one? I am rooted so if this can be done from terminal, I assume it's *NIX like, I'm all ears
thanks
Mine is mounting the same every time. Make sure you are connecting to the usb port every time obviously.
I personally use stickmount to mount inside the sdcard directly.
In my situation I have a SSD in an external USB 3.0 chassis that is always plugged in, same port. I just allow the OS itself to perform the mounting and have never had an issue where it didn't mount, it just intermittently changes the mount location it is using.
The big problem here is when it switches it screws up any app that previously had the drive noted at the last known mount folder. Foldermount being the main app but others like emulators lose the last folder used too.
Is the mounting process on an Android device similar to Linux? Will I find some config file that I can edit to force the mount location every time? Although I'm not sure why it changes sometimes, not all the time, on restarts of the device. For now I've been trying to not restart unless really, really needed.
I also use the same setup minus the fact that I use stickmount also. The system will still do what you are discribing, but it will also mount within the SD card in the same place every time for me.
