THREAD CONTENT
My motive
My goals
Introduction child-boards
Child boards under my recommendation
My Motive
However XDA is a wonderful community there is still some room for improvement. XDA is great, as so are 'most' of the people around here, but however it's greatness there is still
one thing that does sometimes annoy me, is its organisation..
Let's be honest some people don't know where they should start their thread of where to find stuff, on the other hand most people who do have those problems are mostly plain stupid or are to lazy to search.
Yet I believe, that a little re-organisation will be able to address this matter and makes our lives, as the lives of users, mods or developers a little easier.
Lucky for you guys, I am not the guy that just complains, without constructing or achieving a potential solution.
I already put some hard work in it and I am fully prepared to do even more if necessarily , but before you judge me, please read and see see what I had in mind.
My Goals
Optimizing your User Experience
Creating new Levels of User Potential
Simplifying current structures and its organisations
Smoother, Faster, Clearer and Better
Introducing child-boards
I know it looks plain simple and you can believe I barely made any changes. BUT THAT IS THE KEY! That is my GOAL, keeping things as slim as possible. Still a child board can achieve an immense difference just only in your experience.
Imagine this simple user interface: Where you'll be able find to find a sub-board with ONLY ROM Releases or just everything related to it, so as for kernels.
Still I am perfectly aware that the ANDROID development goes beyond, ROM's and Kernels, YET these 2 elements in my opinion the main reason why people go to XDA, or they create kernels and ROM's or they want to flash them.
~~~ Organisational Problems ~~~
No offense but isn't this a little weird, that so many people voted, where they'd best place their own thread?
Or is still someone able to tell, where I should fit this topic?
Child boards under my recommendation:
Separated Product Model Boards:
Even though people might find it lame, just know flashing the wrong firmware onto your phone, can brick your device,
accidents easily occur and even I noticed I accidently clicked onto the G development without even noticing it after 5 min and however the difference might look minor to some of you.
Why would you put 2 devices in the same area, knowing they require different systems, firmware and work on different hardware, meaning even though they are in the same range, THEY STILL DEFER
General Talk:
NewsThis community has a lot of potential users, that are motivated and willing to uncover the latest and hottest news for their phone or their device and I am fully aware that we do have XDA Tv.
But still I strongly believe this could be a very very useful sub-forum. Moderators or Forum Staff can sticky their posts to announce new rules or competitions
and only selected members will be able to post news concerning their galaxy s2 or their device, to decrease chances of any spam topics.
So why would we miss out on this potential, why wouldn't we publish a story that for example, AGPS, allows you to get a faster GPS lock or people invented a new script to conserve 50% more battery than usual,
does it really harm anyone, that one story wouldn't be that interesting, as this place could offer you, a pool of different stories that might catch your interest.
Nobody is forced to publish something, neither are you to read, you'll only have the Galaxy S2 knowledge library right at your disposal.
Android Developent:
Seperated ROM & Kernel BoardWouldn't it be way easier to find all your ROM releases in one place and ONLY them?
Would we even need updated indexes anymore, when this would all be clear and accessible in one single location,
would we even be bothered to posts polls as where should I put this thread as you might have already seen above?
Wouldn't this make your user experience more simpler finding in two clicks whatever you'd like?
I'd certainly vow for this!
ROM & Kernels Separated, everything else, in the android development thread (Applications, scripts, Tweaks, ...
Although your ideas sound great to me (searching for a particular item/topic is currently a task at times), I need to ask. Will (if implemented) these changes also be reflected in this app?
Man you're faster than me, I was planning to make the same suggestion about child forums and adjusting the layout ... but you made it clearer and illustrated !!!! thank you and I hope these suggestions will be taken in consideration
I like your idea mate. You should've posted this on the general xda forum or the about xda forum, alot of senior mods are there and chances are they will spot your suggestion. Cool illustration bdw
What I really want in a build!
Thought I would just present some feedback on what I am seeing with some of the builds. Whilst both amazing and really cool there are a few basic considerations.
As close as possible to full functionality.
Whilst the latest ACE/Desire roms are way sexy it is a bit frustrating to find out 90% of the new Roms are using this and there is no camera. I use this feature a lot.
Whilst the old Sense was a little more plain it certainly worked and delivered more functionality. Across the board.
PPP versus RMNET.
100% for 80% of the time is not as good as 70% all of the time. Whilst RMNET was clunky and a hack it was reliable and worked 100% of the time. All the new builds are dropping RMNET for PPP which for a number of people is simple a loss of functionality.
I currently use Froystone 3.1 with a latter Hastarin kernel. This with the use of GPS status tool gives me
Almost instant GPS access.
Working and accurate compass
G-Sensor is working
Camera is quick and works.
Internet is great but a little unreliable.
Sense. Actually like it.
If I had a choice the only thing I would do is drop back to RMNET for reliability.
Can't wait to see the flames
Hey, when you root your XT, would you mind doing me a favor?
ill assume you will run one of the 2, 2.1 roms out, adlx and barely blurred.
g-sensor works, however in the game 'furdiburb' the virtual pet. the g-sensor no longer works.
(if you arent familiar with the app, on first load, he is in egg. tilt phone, egg should rock back and forth)
just trying to figure out if this is a glitch on my phone. or an artifact of the builds themselves.
id really appreciate it if you wouldnt mind helping me out.
thanks!!!!!
Actually, I think what he is writing is a personal perception of what will work for him/her. The writer did not "Biatch" about the in efficiencies of developers because the developers arn't efficient. The writer is merely stating what he/she wishes to see in a build and did so in a quite articulate manner with informative data that helps to substantiate the findings.
I think most of you should try not to "flame" unless you find writers obnoxious and out to make our dear developers look like they are wasting time. I understand that this is a developer site, all of us like it or not are beta testers. Being beta, the abundance of glitches are bound to happen. Reporting them is not a crime. Though the writer states in the topic as " What I really want in a build" come on guys, isn't a step into perfection what we all aim to achieve? Instead of flaming, we should just write our findings properly, may help even developers see what can be worked on and hopefully even collaborate to create a build that is universally accepted. HOW ELSE CAN WE GO NAND if we don't get the various builds to work efficiently! Is it effective now? YES! For sure.
Is it efficient now? Nope not yet, it will be, with everyone's help in reporting!
Hello Showtime7, that I agree with you. Should be in general discussion instead of this segment of the forum.
Whether a new thread was needed or not or whether it is in the wrong section the op made some good points. There is too much enthusiasm here for the latest build that doesn't work and not enough focus on putting together the best combination that works and is stable.
Adjust saturation or contrast with a custom rom?
Any chance at adjusting vibrence, contrast or saturation with a custom rom? With an unlocked bootloader, I wasn't sure what was possible with the Xoom and some dedicated devs. I like the screen better then the ipad, but it can certainly be better.
First, you are not a developer. This belongs in general.
Second, being able to set a range of brightness and contrast for the auto brightness to use would be damn handy.
BOOM!
lol, and when someone with 87 posts since 2008 decides to take time out of their day and write in your thread just to tell you to post this in general, you dun goofed!
You know what, this thing uses an geo force video chip right? We should be able to have a ton of color/contrast settings.
Haha..so the idea of having this possible in a custom rom is not enough because I am personally not a developer?
I may be mistaken but I do not believe the developer forums are only for developers. This post is a question directly relating to development and seems to be right at home. I could certainly see a case for it not being here, or being here, either way.
That being said, I am sure that the reply post did nothing to promote the OP from contributing to this site.
First, putting things in a numbered list makes you sound like an ass.
Second, he doesn't have to be a dev to post in the dev forum.
Third, his post is placed properly. Settings for saturation and contrast would have to be addressed in the kernel/rom.
Alright, my bad. I thought the rules were the same across the site. Evo development area is for people creating apps and cooking roms. General is for people asking questions.
Thread DELETED/Locked??? This is DEVELOPMENT section not Q&A/General!!!!
I suspect as a device sees more developers that tactic becomes necessary, but that is rare... Although I would LOVE to see that kind of support for this thing!
Is it possible to adjust these settings on other Android devices? I've never attempted it on my 3 Android phones, I've never felt the need. I can see the benefit on the Xoom, but I don't know if it's even possible to adjust the settings. Wouldn't it have to be part of the video drivers? If another device using the same chip allows it, then it should be conceivable.
Actually the question section is for asking questions
Edit a: how do we not have one
On phones w/CyanogenMod you can change the render effect right in the settings menu. You can actually put a color overlay on the screen. I'm not sure what this means for us other than someone should send a Xoom to Cyanogen.
All you have to do is do CTRL-U in photoshop
I would also be interested in this as well. Looking at an ipad right next to the xoom you can see slight washed out colors especially in facial tones.
Trying to talk myself into getting one and if the color could be calibrated some how that would be sweet.
ps been a lurker / reader here for a while and I apprecatie OP for poting this question.
So has there been any talk recently about this kind of mod for the Xoom? Seems to me that, based upon the amount of talk I've heard about the "washed out" Xoom screen that something like this would be a pretty big priority among developers. I'd actually be much more anxious to see something like this developed before any further OC kernels or other enhancements.
Even if I think this kind of posts are not allowed I like to answer to your question.
Take a look at Dutty´s LEGACY Ship ROM. It is smooth, stable and fast with less battery draining. As it follows the stock ROM philosophy it includes only the basic applications without a great variety of ringtones etc or cosmetic customizations. So the amount of used Storage is less compared to other ROMs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=610634
You should also have a look on Artemis ROM.
After installation you will have about 160MB free memory.
...and without taking anything away from any of the 'chefs'; NRGZ28 offers a nice variety of ROMs, from the simple & sparse to the densely customized. Essentially, a number of choices with something for (almost) everyone. All on this site, but very clearly presented here... http://www.energyroms.com/www/
These are the largest memories ever, but they don't have an FM Radio, which you could extract from any ROM by "Total Commander"
6.5.5 http://www.multiupload.com/01QLE9DH1Z Lower Start
6.5 http://www.multiupload.com/9LH03QQYAS Upper Start very good one
LOL
Here you can easily see why these kind of threads are forbitten. Every Answer is different.
What is the real answer to your question? Take a look at the threads of the offered ROMs. Each of it is good. Chose some of them and test them by flashing them. You will find your ROM like each of us who answered might have found his favorite ROM.
Please, help me. Which of the forum rules forbids such posts/threads?
The part about flaming? I don't think so.
There was a clear question: which available ROM provides most storage capabilities?
Hi Uli,
no, it´s not the rule about flaming. But I must admit that I don´t know the exact origin of that rule. But I can report about many threads asking which ROM is the best, the fastets, the one which is most stable and so on.
Every thread of this kind resulted in the same: every supporter announced his favorite ROM as the best. The longer the thread was open the more these poster flamed each other. That was the reason why all of these threads I know were closed by a mod with the comment to make his own picture of the provided ROMs.
As you can see in this short thread there are several different answers because everyone has different priorities. So the information inside these threads is close to zero.
Did you see the right answer of the authors question in this ROM? Maybe not ;-)
Have a nice evening
Cheers
@Matthes,
With all due respect, and not to take issue (but just a few comments)... I understand the spirit and sensibility of your POV, and I'm in general agreement with it (not that, That means anything), but I must point out a few subtleties. Like most/all here, my personal choice of custom ROM was arrived at through trial and testing. That's the best way as (obviously) there are no absolute 'bests'... one size does not fit all.
My answer above, wasn't necessarily my favorite. I'm not a cheering section. The OP asked for a specific similarity to a certain ROM to be used as a replacement. I opined a certain chef had multiple offerings from which to chose, and among them, felt the OP might find his answer. --Without taking anything away from any other Chef. Everything I've tried from multiple sources, has been pretty much excellent. Different but all well-done nonetheless. There's a difference between a cut finger and a cut throat and no cut at all. There were no favorites implied in my answer.
Rob
@RobE & @Matthes42
I didnt know it was against the rules to post this sort of question otherwise I wouldnt have posted it. I am genuinely looking for a ROM upgrade its been months and im itching to flash my HD2
As you stated it down to personal preferences and I'm looking for something specific so I just needed someone to point me in the right direction.
As I said all suggestion are welcomed. so far flashed two and it 2-0. so im going to try other suggestion,
If I've upset anyone with this thread, my apologies, it was not my intention
There are no best rom, what's be best for your cannot be best for me and viceversa.
That is why we don't allow these kind of threads, becasue they become redundant.
On that note, thread closed.
ROM Discussion & Suggestions HERE!
Hello Galaxy Peeps!
I am new here on this forum, this is my first post. I have been reading a lot on this site the last couple of weeks, and have found plenty of useful and essential information for my new baby! You guys (devs and members) ROCK!
On to the subject, which is the reason why I registered so that I could start the thread.
Here is where I currently stand:
SGS2 from BELL Mobility in Montreal Canada.
**Stock ROM is UGKG2. (I am aware that this matters very little)
**GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 out of the box.
I have already experienced a little bit with upgrading the firmware via Odin to a more recent official samsung build:
RUNNING ON:
XXKH3 ROM (stock)
GINGERBREAD 2.3.4
Rooted with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4
Launcher: SPB Shell 3D (absolutely beautiful and buttery smooth!! totally worth the $15... simply the best, no doubts in my mind.)
I have never used CWM to flash an update, only used it for backing up and restoring so far. I do feel very comfortable diving in though with all that I have read here so far, and deem myself ready to try some Custom ROMS. They sound great!
The only thing holding me back is that I do not want to flash endlessly to find out which ROM is the best for me. I read up all the threads about the different ROMS, however I find it very difficult to find comparisons between them and picking the right one.
So basically I would like to start this discussion and have you guys tell us what you picked for yourself, and most importantly why you like your choice. The more details the better!
This I think would be a great help for people like me and in my situation, I know it will for sure help me tremendously.
Thanks guys, and keep informing the world about SGS2. Best device out there by far, all platforms mixed in...
Raz
Post number ten asking yet again whats the best rom????
So you don't think that this question/invitation for discussion hasn't been asked a gazillion times already? In all the reading you say that you've done, you haven't come across other noobs posting the same things? No? Don't believe you; you clearly haven't read enough.
My advice? Don't use your 1st ever posts like this. Use them constructively. Get a shortlist of ROMs that you feel might be appropriate for your needs and if you have questions, search the relevant ROM thread. If you can't find a suitable answer, then post your question.
In my most humble opinion, this will greatly enhance your XDA experience as you won't get upset when people continuously tell you to search or flame you for being a noob. Some XDA users can be very intolerant.
In all honesty though, unless you're looking to switch to MIUI or Cyanogen, there isn't an enormous difference between the ROMs on offer. Mainly the themes and tweaks that the chef chooses to apply, but the base ROMs are essentially very similar.
I started this post with the intention of shouting at you for being imbecilic. As I wrote though, I realised that you were fairly literate and seemingly bright so I thought I'd go easy on you instead. I'm normally not this nice.
[Suggestion] or maybe it can be done already. Being used to honeycomb on my Iconia I like the ability to move to another home screen just by touching the left or right side of the screen instead of swiping. Is this possible?
How's everyone doing?
Thanks for the replies guy, although not entirely what I was looking for... I guess to be expected with such a noob question after all I do admit to being guilty of being a noob when it come to Android and SGS, I just got my device not so long ago, coming from Samsung Omnia (WM) for a few years. Understand guys, I am not looking to get flamed here, just for a bit of advise coming from your experiences. I do understand where you guys stand, and I am sorry if I offended anyone... it was never my goal.
So far I am LOVING my new Droid!! I may not know so much when it comes to custom ROMS, but I am learning steadily when reading the posts on this site - @Major_Sarcasm yes I do read... I appreciated still the clarity and respectfulness of you reply -.
Yesterday I ended up flashing the LeoMar75 Revolution Rom and I like it up to now. It is great and is user friendly when it comes to customizations since you can use the Revolution kitchen app to download and install MOD packages. Awesome for a noob like me! I didn't even wait for any replies because I was too excited and wanted to flash ASAP on my time off, since I had already done a lot of browsing already at work. For now I think I made the right pick, and will not try to flash a different ROM, unless someone here tells me I messed up with my choice.
Finally I know many posts have been put up already for which is the best ROM out there, but if you "read" carefully my post was not entirely about that... in fact not at all!!! I stated the fact that I didn't want to try all the available ROMS out there to make a pick (too much work too little time)... that is one thing. I never anywhere in there asked what is the best ROM to use. What I was really asking is for you guys to share which you are currently using, and the reason why you like it (features, performance, etc...) or reasons why you may not like it and may want to switch back to something else. It was intended more as a discussion than a question. As you can see I already made my choice!
Again I hope I am not offending anyone, I just want to make sure I was thoroughly understood here
Hope you guys are having a great time with your babies, I sure am!
Cheers,
Raz...
Sounds good.
I think this would be a great thread if the flaming were to be non-existent.
I personally have been using Litening rom all the while, 5.0 first then 6.1 now. Satisfied with it, but I'm someone who gets bored easily so I am thinking of switching to something else. I'm also really sick of the battery life my phone offers, hopefully flashing a different rom might improve it. (I doubt so though, lol)
My main concern now is wiping - I hear its recommended to do a full wipe before flashing to other roms. So I have to do a full backup with CWM and Titanium Backup?
Deciding between LeoMar, Cognition and CyanogenMod...
Well guess what? No one has enough time to try them all out, that's why 3 of these threads pop up every day from people like you.
[MINI REVIEW] GingerZaraki for the Xperia x8
I have created this thread in order to my personal review on the GingerZaraki ROM on top of the alfs v08a/v09a kernel for CM7. I have had experiences with many ROMs and have decided to review the one I am currently running on my device. Before I begin, I have to mention that, although there maybe other reviews every one is opinionated or 'spiced' differently. I think it is valid that there will be more than one review of the same ROM.
If you have ANY suggestions, please leave them as a post below.
This review will be on the latest version of the ROM - v08.
XDA renowned ROM author RohinZaraki - along with his team - rolled out his first ever ROM: GingerZaraki on the 18th May 2012. Seeing as a track record was in-existent, many users summoned their fiery mists of doubt. But after reading further, these mists were quickly extinguished. After using the ROM for quite a while, there is no doubt that it is a clear contender for ROTC (ROM of the century). I will cover various areas in which the ROM amazed me and some where the ROM may have disappointed me.
Visuals
TeamZaraki has obviously pulled all the stocks out making a flawlessly beautiful ROM. With many talented themers in the team, the ROM offers bold icons revolutionizing the classic gingerbread 2.3.7 look. The team have also modernized the x8 adding the Xperia Ice theme seen on many of the newer breeds of Xperia devices. Overall, the Zaraki team has done a great job - one would forget that the android base was the old gingerbread if not for the version in settings.
Kernel
If you have any problems with performance on the x8 I can assure you that the alfs v08a/v09a will annihilate any problems you had. Blasting out an Antutu total score of around 2500, you will see a great increase in basic speeds on your device. Again, with a custom kernel, you will be given the ability to overclock and undervolt. I can personally recommend scaling to about 729mhz. The battery performance seemed to be a bit of a letdown though. I was getting one day of heavy use and two days of moderate use. This was a considerable decrease from the ICS ROM I was using previously. However, with much consideration, this may just be a sacrifice for all that extra umph! Also, seeing as you have to install a custom kernel, you must have an unlocked boot loader which is a brick wall for many users. Fortunately, many variants of the same ROM were created in order to allow stock users to enjoy Zaraki as well. :laugh: I do think that users will have to muscle up seeing as the stock kernel is a brick wall for developers trying to port gingerbread+.
Firmware
Gingerbread is like the Windows XP of Android. It is debatably the ultimate android operating system. With that said, I think many crave a higher OS even though it may be beyond the x8's capabilities. A possible suggestion for a next version would be to build the ROM upon a port of jellybean. JellyZaraki? The ICS platfroms will be too slow to really be a deserving update to the series.
Side Note
Even though this is nothing to do with the ROM itself I think it deserves note. RohinZaraki has offered a multitude of tips, troubleshooting guides and screenshots with the thread supporting the ROM. I think that the effort has to be applauded even if it is done in a small senior member post.
Conclusion
I believe that the experience provided by GingerZaraki is one that will set very high expectations for ROMs to come. But with producers like TeamZaraki I have no doubt that the bar will be raised with every release. I do not believe one thread is enough to highlight all that is good with the release but I will take the opportunity to thank Rohin and all the team for the release on behalf of the x8 community.
Rating: 9 out of 10
I have spent quite some time typing this review, please do not troll. All suggestions on the other hand are more than welcome. Please hit 'thanks' if you appreciate my massive effort. Sorry if this is not something you wanted. Even though the guide is long, I call it mini because it does not cover everything.
Special Thanks to RohinZakari and all the guys at TeamZaraki. (Chris95X8, SpyderX, nazz.rule, lucastan96, AckeflyRzyle, Lloir)
Check out the ROM here:
I have a suggestion Deftone. Why dont you just make 1 thread for all your upcoming review? Like we say its Xperia X8 ROM Review, I know there is already a thread like that but yours ofcourse is different and more infos.. Lets say you have 10 ROMs to review user, more likely will not see your past reviews if those new thread piled up. Another thing if its for RC, all of your reviews will be counted as one even though you created 20 reviews. IMO
Keep it up
Thanks for your suggestion. But I do not want to pile all of my review into one thread. I know that it will be neater but this will respawn the massive issue of too long didn't read. I would like my reviews to be considered as individual editions, like magazines. It will be easier for me to manage as well.
However, I could create one thread That i keep updating with links to all my reviews. And then put a link to that thread in every new review I create. This will solve the two problems you mentioned. Think of it as creating a review network.
I do not really care about RC - if I get it I will be extatic but it seems like it will be a long time before that happens. As long as I serve the XDA community to the max, I am fine.
Good idea but you haven't actually given a review of the rom, or is that coming?
This is more of a history of the rom.
A review is giving your opinion of something in a professional climate. I think I did that. I also think you just read the introduction paragraphs. Any further suggestions, just say. Don't ever feel like I will troll you or anything. I am just here to help.
EDIT: I read the link you provided CtrlAltDellrl. This is in a lot of detail I label my reviews mini because I will not go into that much detail. I just break my review into parts using subheadings so people can skip through it easily. Sorry That I let you down with my review. How about check out my other one of the minicm9 ROM. Tell me what you think. Still a history.
In addition to this, I said the bold icons revolutionize gingerbread. This in itself is a review seeing as I am giving my opinion about a part of the ROM.
Here is my other review. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845638 You sound like you could help me a lot. Sorry for the .gif under the show content. But I was itching.
This is what I "expect" when I read a review..
Cheers..
