WIFI lists - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1> Sometimes you want to check the available wireless lists. Then you have to go to 'settings' -> 'wireless'. If there any app that can list all the available wireless connections?
2> there is always a connection called '_The Cloud'. Most of the times, it is avaible and free to connect. But the signal is really bad and does not seem to work. Anyone knows what is '_The Cloud'?
Thanks in advance.

Any ideas?

There are several, just do a search for WiFi in the play store... "_The Cloud" is some guy down the street who named his wifi that.

_TheCloud is the SSID used by The Cloud, a BSkyB company and is commonly found at McDonalds, Prey a Manger, Eat, and many mainline railway stations.

Google Maps Navigation

I have issues with Google maps navigation. It's stuck at the "looking for location".
I tried it on my 16GB and my wifes 8GB and got the same.
When I tried to navigate on Copilot it worked well so I don't think it's the GPS issue.
Anyone else has similar problem?
This may or may not help, I am just tossing it out as something for you to try. My google navigation app was doing the same thing. It turns out because I switched off location access (to see if that conserved power) it stopped google navigation from working properly. So check your location access settings and make sure you have them turned on.

GPS test locks onto a satellite with no problem.
Check Settings->Accounts->Google->Location Settings and make sure the "Let Google apps access your location" is ON.
Mine did the same thing, when I tried to re-plot the course whilst in a call.
It appears to only do it when in a call, too.
A reboot resolves the problem. Slightly annoying.

Lol. Thought so! It clears that setting.
It took some Ninja Googling to find out what was going on. Don't know why all the Location settings aren't located in the one place, it would make life a bit easier.

How to tell Google maps/ Google now I don't have a job?

This is kinda funny actually , I currently just study but Google now decided to choose a random location I walked a couple of times to as my "work" and now I get the card quite frequently on Google now , there's no option to not set a "work place " the only thing I can do is edit is the address ... :banghead:

Sadly, no. I have the same issue. I work from home, so I use the same address for both. I messes up the % at home, % at work, % away graphs in Latitude, but at least it fixed Google Now giving me useless commute times.
Update: Go to https://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces and remove it there. It may still put in random places anyway though.

I got a chuckle out of that one...
But honestly to answer the OP, go to maps.google.com on your computer. I know use your computer for once. Make sure you're signed in, and hit "My Places." You can delete Home and Work by clicking on the expand menu buttons...
Since you frequently visit that place why not just let it give you the information whether you work there or not?
You can also head over to the google now settings and there should be an option to set a different work place ( A place you visit frequently, in my case School )

And custom names?

There is a way. Not by adding it directly to the settings page though.
Search the place you want to go to often and it will automatically give you timings to that place. Google Now will than ask you if you go to the place often and answer yes.
Edit: Sorry for the extremely late reply. Did not receive a notification that showed you replied.

Thanks, entering the addresses in Google Now is giving me the estimated travel time.
But it hasn't asked me if I go to the place often.
I'll keep trying, thanks.

[Q] Google Now: has my wrong location!!! So frustrating

I live in Mississauga, Ontario (Canada) and Google Now thinks I live in Hornby, Ontario which is like 45min away from me. Google maps seems to get my exact location (the GPS doesn't lock on it keeps saying "searching for location" or something like that but still shows me exact right location- when I have a SIM the GPS lock works perfectly). Google Now however doesn't fiind my right location with or without a SIM (always connected to internet via wi-fi). When I ask things like "what the weather" or "how's the traffic" it will give me information based on if I was in Hornby which I am not.
This has been going on for a couple of months now and is driving me CRAZY!
Any insight would be helpful - Thanks!
Have u tried putting it in manually?
Go to menu>settings>my stuff>places
Then manually type in your location. I was having the same issue but doing it this way fixed it.

You can tell Google now to give you the temperature for that location for example, "what is the weather like in Buffalo, New York?" Give her a location and she'll reply back.

If you want to continue to use stock room, and need hot spot, there is a trick using the app shortcut master from the market where you just have to edit 1 line . It works on LG g2 and g3 (I used it). If anyone wants to try, I'll look for a link to the directions.

No good. Those values don't show up in shortcut master.
Anyone had any luck with this? I can't find the file that OMJ is talking about to save my life. I don't see any attachments.
I've tried editing my build.prop and I've tried editing the default xml to change the rules and enforcement to 0.
The latter DID let the hotspot start for me. Other devices can connect. But they never get network connectivity.
Can anyone help me confirm what I'm missing?
Fabio Grasso's WiFi Tether app works for me on the 10.

I can't get it to work on mine! I've achieved root, installed the app, matched all the settings up....no internet connection. It's strange, my Ipad can see the network and it says it's connected. As soon as I connect it though I lose internet connection on both devices, can't load a single web page. Did you have this issue at all or would you have any idea what would cause this? I'm at my wits end with it, and I've used this app for 2 years on my M8.

HAH. I couldn't get it to work with this app (not initially anyway). I turned to his site to check if there were settings already available to use for the HTC 10 because it couldn't auto-detect the wifi adapter name. On his site, it says HTC users need to uninstall "TetherGuard" - system app.
Did that, figured I'd reboot and try the built in tethering which now works beautifully. Got it still within my refund window for Wifi Tether Router.
So some combination of what I posted above plus UNINSTALL TETHERGUARD! And life's good now. Thanks much.

You can use Titanium Backup to uninstall TetherGuard since you're rooted, instead of just disabling it.
Anyone want to post the specific changes/tweaks they've done? I've done changes to build.prop and default.xml (using the various settings found all over XDA) and also disabled/removed TetherGuard, but I'm still stuck at hotspot enabling but no data connection for any connected devices (data still works for the phone while hotspot is on though).

Smart Settings on Verizon

I looked for smart settings on my Verizon unit and couldn't find it. Looks like Verizon removed it.
Here is how to get it back.
Download QuickShortcutmaker from the market

Now press the first smart settings drop down.
This will create a icon on your home screen.

Awesome! Thanks for the tip!
Thank you for this suggestion. Most Smart Settings cannot be used without the My Places feature active, and that has apparently been disabled by Verizon as well. Any workaround suggestions?
Perhaps try Llama? It can be found in the Play Store
I would be very interested if one of the tmobile phone owners have an apk of my places, and could possibly post it.

No, unfortunately Verizon verified that they did indeed REMOVE My places functionality from their version, so no it will not auto-locate your home location after 5 days, either.
IMO, they are trying to force you to use more data. Most people turn their wifi off when they leave, and turn it back on when they come home - Smart setting will do just that. So, why would Big Red not want you to have it? Because when you have to do it manually, you'll forget to turn it back on when you get home... and when you do that, you'll use more data. my *theory*.

Or people will just leave WiFi on...because it doesn't use that much battery when not in use. This isn't a conspiracy to get people to use more data. Sounds like carriers have to pay for certain features on phones and Verizon didn't want to cash out for some less useful features. Plenty of other apps out there that can turn your WiFi on and off automatically.

Hmmm... most people I know turn it off, but to each his own. But when that is intentionally disabled along with FM radio, along with Google In Apps Search shortcut (by which you must do an internet search first before just searching for something on your phone...) - a pattern seems to be emerging... but let's give Big Red the benefit of the doubt, right? Let's forget about the lawsuit about them asking Blackberry to disable bluetooth so you couldn't transfer files, or the similar lawsuit about the same kind of thing with Motorola...
No... Nothing to see here... Move along, people, move along...
Any luck with this?
