Hi,
I have an Acer Iconia A500, currently running Taboonay (ICS). I bought it in the US, and brought it to the UK with me, so I can't get it back to the place I bought it (unfortunately), or I'd return it... but hoping someone here can help me fix this:
Shortly after I bought it, the tab lost the sd card, and I've only once ever been able to see it again. While flashing Taboonay, the recovery did (once only, not reproducable) recognise the sd card, and show me the contents properly. This is the slim hope I have that it's not a hardware issue...
I have tried with multiple SD cards, formatted with different file-systems, and none of them have mounted at all, or even been recognised by the tab.
I have tried a few (can't remember the names of them now) root-level card-mount applications, and none of them have helped either. They just can't see the card at all.
If anyone has any tips for software solutions that I can try, I'd be very grateful! I would very much like to avoid a re-flash, or anything that will reset my internal storage...
Thanks,
Rich

Typically EXT SD Card issues usually are software related. With the exception of bad SD Cards.
1. Update your Recovery to the most recent version.
2. Or, try a different recovery like Public Recovery
I will assume you are on an ICS bootloader, and that your recovery is correct for ICS?
If you have the V8 Bootloader installed for example, you can boot the tab to Fastboot mode, Then start Fastboot from the Android SDK on your PC. (place your recovery image in the same folder as fastboot.exe) and type;
Fastboot Flash Recovery nameofyourrecovery.img
Also, the rom you are using may need to be re-installed again (wipes and formats)
But go for option 1 or 2.
One more note. I have heard of people using the Format option in Recovery and have had success when PC formats won't work.
Along with using some specialized PC Format applications.

1) I have done this many, many times before I initially gave up...
2) This is something new (or at least new-ish, I may have gone through two when I rooted, but that was some time ago)

Don't assume anything! I am not a pro at this, although I am a techy for a living, it's quite possible I have this wrong. How would I tell?

Really, REALLY don't want to go down this road again... and I have done many times already with no change, so don't hold much hope of that working.

I was under the impression that Recovery Format formatted the internal memory on the A500 (as the internal memory is called "sd-card"). I would hate to get this wrong!
If you can suggest a PC Format app for me to try I'll give that a go too.
Rich
I have installed Public Recovery, and one change it has made, is that my boot time is significantly reduced...
I haven't had the time to do anything else yet.
Testing with an SD card shows that inserting one while the tablet is running DOES now pick up that a card is there. However, mounting it does nothing at all. Attempting to mount it through apps like DiskMount fails, but doesn't give me a meaningful error (just "Drive could not be mounted")
This seems to be a positive change, as the disk is being seen, if not understood, by Android now. First sign that there is a fix to this!
I googled for apps to format the SD on the PC, but didn't find anything (all the tips I found said to format with right-click, which hasn't worked so far)
Any further advice?
I have changed the recovery (again) to the latest Thor CWM, which claims to be good for ICS.
I am going to flash my bootloader tonight to one that explicitly works with this recovery and my current ICS ROM. I downloaded all the bits I need last night, but didn't have the time to actually flash it after all that.
I figured updating these couldn't hurt, and would ensure that I am on compatible versions.
The only thing left that has been suggested (beyond a total re-install) is formatting the sdcard with something more likely to give me a compatible format. I still lack confidence that the recovery knows the difference between my internal memory (called sdcard) and the actual SD card. For example, when installing a new recovery, selecting "install from zip on SDCard" takes me to the internal memory to select a file... This only leaves me with the option of using a specialist PC app, as was recommended, but still can't find one, so any advice here would be welcomed.
Or of course, any new course of action entirely...
Thanks,
Rich

I've used sdformat (attached) in the past or gparted (linux) will do it too...and yeh you're right to be wary...if the recovery doesnt recognise it then it will use yr internal sd...
not sure if you've got the drivers installed or not and
usb debugging is enabled
I do know that i had this issue with taboonay on HC once, never did get it figured out so just used another rom
the afterOTA tool will tell you if you have the drivers installed,
what rom and b/l you're running, yr uid and sbk and will also flash the bl and recovery for you

Sorry for not replying with results - when trying to use the "idiot-proof" tool, I supplied the world with a bigger idiot.
Somehow I managed to brick - not my tablet, but my laptop. I'm now in mourning... And looking for a new laptop.
And then I will be back to trying to fix the tablet!
(Yes, I'm fairly certain it wasn't the tool that killed my laptop, but it happened while I was using it. Can't even get to BIOS at the moment... think the motherboard fried somehow)

So I attempted the OTA 2.2 update and I'm honestly not sure what exactly went wrong. I waited for Verizon to push the update, but apparently the update was corrupted because the OS was acting very sporadic and my Baseband wasn't upgraded because it was (and still is) on 1.x.
I attempted to upgrade the baseband and thing got really strange... I could try to explain everything I've done to try to fix the phone but I really can't come to a solid conclusion. I've worked extensively in the iPhone jailbreaking scene but the Android stuff is a bit different so I'm still learning how the phone is logically designed, etc the hard way.
Here's where I am now:
I cannot boot into recovery via any means... I'm pretty sure that the partition is deleted because it just jumps straight back to HBOOT. When I was still able to get into recovery, the sdcard couldn't mount as well as a few other things in /dev/block. I can't get HBOOT to recognize ANY PB31IMG.zip's nor would clockwork install them from recovery before I lost recover... when I try to flash recovery with fastboot, it says not allowed. I didn't think it would be an issue because I have S-OFF.
I feel like if I can re-flash the newest clockwork or cyanogen from HBOOT, I can then mount my sdcard and restore to 2.1 and then try to OTA again (after a nandroid backup), but I can't really get around HBOOT's permission hissy-fit.
I can't just take my phone back to the verizon store either because I'm in college and have no car and there isn't one nearby.
Any help is appreciated!

One simple thing to check: is your SD card formatted FAT32? If it's the stock 2GB one, then probably not. You need FAT32 to flash PB31IMG.zip...
Yup, if you can get to hboot you're fine, just make sure its formatted correctly as previous poster said.
Hmm ok well, I read that little bit elsewhere and you are completely right, the card was fat16 so I formatted it as fat32 and it still doesn't offer to update the zip... The only thing I can think of is perhaps there was a problem with me having to use my phone as the card reader? I don't really have any other options there and now I can't mount it in recovery to try again.
I have a blackberry 9650 that could act as the reader I suppose... If I can get it to boot without the battery. I somehow had it pulled and left it all the way back home.
Any tips are still appreciated. Thanks guys!
I am not 100% sure this will work but since it sounds like your phone is not bricked but you have issues getting the right files on your SD card...
Card readers for your computer are dirt cheap, no?
Head to Best Buy, pick one up, and then download and transfer the files you need on it over from the computer. Then put the SD card back in your phone, and start over.
I hope someone will chime in if this sounds like a bad idea for some reason...

The problem is that I can't easily get to a place that sells MicroSD card readers. If I were so able, I would just go to the Verizon Store and get my unit replaced, as the technicians advised me to do on Twitter.
I need a way to format the SD card from fastboot or something else... perhaps my Blackberry 9650 will do it if it's only getting a charge from the sync cable. I shouldn't have left its battery at home. My mistake
Has anyone else had an issue with formatting it from a phone directly?

I completely agree.. however I'm unable to get it formatted. One of my suite mates has a Moto Droid so hopefully it can format it and all will be well.
Here's another question though.. Why can't I flash a recovery image via fastboot? I keep getting "writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)" and I'm using official images with S-OFF set so I don't really see what the problem is. I've searched around quite a lot and can't find much on it. I at least want to be able to boot recovery, or maybe flash the system partition back from hboot via fastboot.
Just curious. Thanks guys!
I had some problems with my SD Card as well (it would not recognize PB31IMG.zip) during hboot, but clockworkmod could read it. I believe there was a problem with the SD Card, kind of wierd to explain, but I replaced it with another SD Card and that problem has gone away. Could be your card is "partially" defective.
this scenario kind of happened to my friends's new incredible. unfortunately he is not rooted nor s-off. After he applied the OTA and rebooted the phone it just FC's after the boot screen animation. I'm hoping that the factory reset/data wipe will fix this thru the stock recovery or hopefully will let me put the signed .zip RUU on the sdcard and flash thru the stock recovery.
Ill let you know how things go, but it seems im in a darker situation than you are as I have no clockwork recovery to play with and get this working.

One of my SD cards is fully defective, but the one from my Blackberry is fine... I just have no means to format it.
And to the poster above me, I don't have recovery anymore since my recovery partition is apparently wiped (my bad ), however I do have S-OFF. It's just all frustrating. Why can't I flash it straight over USB like the iPhone? I miss my beloved DFU Restores with iTunes
You do need to format the SD card to fat 32 and I would do a factory re-set also.

You realize that you don't need a micro SD reader if you have the full size sd to micro adapter card that comes with almost all micro sd cards...
Also make sure you didn't rename your file PB31IMG.zip.zip. One zip is enough and if it's a zip file, Windows will put the proper extension on automatically.
If you can get into hboot, you're not hosed yet.

I have read that around... I work on a Mac and I have it setup so that file extensions are always displayed but I was last trying most of these fixes from a Win7 pc that isn't setup that way... the file extensions are hidden but that said, unless I saw "PB31IMG.zip" in explorer, I wouldn't have any issues because there is only one hidden file extension. However, now that most of the people here at my college have gone home for the weekend, I can't verify that =/
I understand that I'm not really hosed... I knew I wasn't bricked, but I'm close and it should get some people to look at this thread just a little bit more. It's a dirty little trick but it works. Hence "potentially"
And yes, I'm aware of the SD adapter thing, if I had one I could just format it through my digital camera... too bad all of my MicroSD cards came with my phones so there is no adapter.
You must be at the only college without a Walmart within walking distance. I hope you get it working, as a new SD card formatted FAT32 should fix you right up - I wouldn't trust your current card given what you've described already.

Much less the only college where you don't have friend or a friend of a friend that has what you need. Much less a resident dorm geek around to ask for help. I'm sure if you ask around someone would have a reader or adapter. Perhaps you will have to use it under their supervision so they make sure it doesn't grow it's own feet, but I'm sure if you asked around.
First I want to thank dzo for his amazing work. Thanks to him, we now have an almost fully functional ICS port!
Now, to get to the point... I upgraded from dzo's v.1.1 to v1.2 ICS yesterday. The ROM is very nice and smooth, and it seems like everything is functioning like it should. BUT, after my first reboot after flashing v1.2, I got the message about corrupt sdcard. So I rebooted into recovery, then rebooted to recovery through recovery again P), and then rebooted normal. The message was still there, so I unplugged the sdcard from my phone and plugged it into my computer through a cardreader. The PC said I had to format it before use, so that's what I tried.. the format-window hung up, and stood still on 0% for about an hour. I got kinda bored of waiting and unplugged the sdcard, then put it back into my phone. Now my phone says something like: "blank sdcard or has an unsupported filesystem etc.). I've tried several sdcard formatting programs, but nothing seems to work :S Now my PC doesn't even recognize my sdcard as an sdcard anymore, but as an empty disk or something.
The worst part is that I actually bought my sdcard yesterday, the same day as got corrupted/blank..
any tips would be appreciated!
edit: My sdcard is a SanDisk Class 4 16GB
Hi,
I have the same sdcard and in most cases my U8800 Pro does not mount correctly this microsd. I don't know if this is a kernel problem or a rom problem.
Anyway I advice you to format your sdcard with a specific format-tool, please download it here:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/sdfmt3_1.zip
This is a free software developed by Panasonic (if I'm not wrong).
This tool helped me with my sdcard BUT I have to say that Huawei U8800 is a little buggy for the sdcard mount.

So just to be sure it wasn't the program, I tried to connect another sdcard, and that one was recognized. Weird stuff...
Maybe the card is just broken?
This happened to me too. There is nothing you can do, the sd card is broken. Reformatting is impossible, since no reader will recognize the card. You'll just have to buy a new card or get it replaced via warranty.
I have the exact same problem olfyboy, I think the card is ruined

if it this method not work then put ur sd card in some Symbian phone (Nokia, sony ericsson) in symbian phone you are able to format
i hope this method work for you best of luck
maybe a software named Usboot can help you.
Pls try aurora 1.4. Dzo solved sdcard problem
Thanks for your replies guys!

what is the OS on your PC?
maybe I can help you. first of all you have to install a recovery software on your PC ( I prefer "Recover My Files") and extract your photos from SD to your PC.
then if you ask me I will tell you how to format your SD and use it again.
Idk is it a same situation but 2 weeks ago my sd went broke. Ics was showing its empty which i was sure it wasnt. First i tried it with my old phone but no luck. I can connect it to my comp (both win and ubuntu) via sd card reader and no luck. Then i tried fix permissions in cwm and then it recognized, all my old files were there.
I know it doesnt make any sense but if you guys didnt try this just give it a luck.
G luck.

I think you misunderstood the situation. My phone or my pc doesn't recognize the sdcard. Thy not see ant disk when I attach it. I know what your meaning but the problem bigger than this.
,
I am a flash addict and I am sure most of you are. I can't stand a smooth running phone that works flawlessly. If it does, then I must do something to it to destroy it's stability. Well, it's not easy to brick HD2 unless you are a real dummy or like to live very dangerously lolll....even that can be fixed...but it was more difficult for me to find a way to unlock my SD card back to normal after WP7 installation. Some suggested in this forum that some of the cameras and nokia phones will do the trick...I was frustrated when I screwed up my 16GB sd card and could not find that camera or phone...as it won't make sense to buy them to restore a $15 card.....so I gave up on that card until today....I decided to play with WP mango again with the same sd card...resulted in locking it again...my challenge was to succeed unlocking it this time.....followed the same old procedures with no success...I tried and exhausted all options again!!! Then I decided to pop my sd card on my second hd2 which is running android with 4ext recovery installed and try to format it or something....and it worked!!!!! Just repartitioned the card and reformatted and it automatically unlocked it during the process....No step by step by step by step installation of software or reading pages or running codes.....nothing else was needed!
Life is meant to be simple after all
Anyone who is having the same issue with sd card after Windows Phone 7 or 7.5 installation just repartition and reformat your card via 4ext recovery and it will work...nothing else needed :} Good Luck!
All credits to 4ext recovery developer....and the developer must be proud to find this info.
Here is Step by Step process-
If you are running Android NAND and have 4ext recovery installed....then
1. Turn off your device
2. Take out the SD card(if there is any in it) and insert the one you want to unlock/fix
3. Turn on your device HOLD red power button until you get to aMAGLDR v1.13 menu
4. Go to option 8. AD Recovery hit green button for it load
5. Now you should have 4ext recovery(mine is version 2.2.7) menu
6. Scroll down to Advanced
7. Choose> Partition SD Card
8. Choose whatever size you want to first one, second one to be and the rest goes to fat. If you want all in one partition, just choose '0' for the first two and '0' as swap.
9. Follow on screen instruction you may see.....and it will delete all previous partition and create new one
8. NOW go back to main 4ext recovery menu....and format you SD card...AND there it it! Your SD card it back to normal...enjoy
NOTE: I use 4ext recovery that you flash via usb flasher thru magldr NOT the one from market. You can find the flashable one in here. I will try to find the link and post it. BUT it is not and will not be my work!
Here is a link I found....but this NOT what I used. I used this recovery that I found in one ROM link I have tried in the past which I can't think of but I have been using the same recovery since then because it is the BEST with the option of EXT4 file system....the one I have you can directly flash it like any other recovery you normally would to partition NAND to flash NAND Android roms. Nand partition size has nothing to do with sd recovery steps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297587
Since I did not use the above option....I won't be much of help. But from my understanding you can use this option to update your current recovery to 4ext recovery and then follow my steps. The app from the market would require to update your current recovery as well to be able to use my method to restore your SD card after WP7 installation Good Luck! Although it is a very simple process to undertake, I am not responsible if you damage your phone or the sd card even more!!!
If someone who has the usb flashable version of 4ext recovery(for HD2) could attach it or provide link that would be great for everyone. Mine is installed in the phone and I don't seem to have that file....too many files I download everyday and must delete them all at some point
If you've found a solution to a problem...please go ahead and include a link or something so people can find the tool you used without having to spend time searching through threads and forums, instead of just writing that you found a solution.

I did not install that way(read post) but I think you have to update your recovery to 4ext after you install that app. And after that you can easily try my steps. It will work

Ok thanks for all your efforts.
It seems to m that you can install 4ext from "android market", load it then choose the first menu option "Online install..." and download the additional 4ext recovery file from there.
But I'm still having problems getting it to load at boot up
Update: No joy. I have Clockworkmod recovery on mine. Installed 4ext but overwrote boot stuff and would not load 4ex. So I need help how to replace Clockworkmod with 4ext or whatever I need to do (I have more expertise in WP7 than Android)
For the HD2 the 4EXT Recovery was originally ported by Dansta34 and i have also seen a variant on Coredroid which looks like it's the same. The Sensation 4EXT from Madmaxx will not work on the HD2.
The HD2 4EXT Recovery can be taken from either Dan's thread (TBD ROM) or from Coredroid, whereas i recommend taking it from Dan as he also took the workload of porting it to the HD2 as far as i know. So he should deserve the Download stats and the credits
I've also got it mirrored in my Signature. Feel free to take it from there. I've got both the CoreDroid and the TBD variant, yet the only difference i can see is the background image. Not sure though.
Once you downloaded that Recovery you can put your HD2 into USB Flasher Mode in Magloader and then flash the Recovery via the included DAF.exe, then proceed with the Steps the OP recommends. Notice: if you flash it for the sole purpose of unlocking your SD-Card, setting the partition sizes in flash.cfg is irrelevant. Just leave them as they are since the Recovery and the partitions will be deleted and set up different from the WP7 flash afterwards.
Since the Threadstarter has contacted me for a link to the files (?? Why is that) i'd like to point out that this Recovery is not a hidden gem but a normal Download for at least two Android ROM's and can be taken in exchange for a THANKS.
I recommened NYSEAN1 to reproduce and verify his findings, as i find it rather strange that noone else has noticed this "function" of the Recovery before. There is quite a large number of people who mess with both android and wp7 and noone has ever noticed that the HD2 can, by means of the 4EXT Recovery, unlock DRM encrypted SD-Cards? Very odd.
Well, if it does actually work, the better it is for us. So, we have to say THANKS to NYSEAN1 for finding out this wonderful trick that saves us from finding an old Nokia phone.
I'd still recommend to post this Info on the SD-Card unlocking threads as this seems the most independent and hassle-free solution to me. But please only after this procedure has been verified by more than just one person to be working as expected.
Thanks
Thank you very much.
I have sloved it.

Would you mind providing a link Dan's thread or advise as to which to download from your great site – it seems to have a few Xt4 files. Not being an expert, I’m not sure which to use.

I used TMobile version....but it doesn't matter anyway..nand partition or size does not really have anything to do with it...any size is fine...just pick any 4ext recovery and flash it through usb flasher...all we are looking for is the 4ext recovery menu to re-partition and format the card.
Please report back it worked for you...very eager to know

Sorry, but it's not that simple. I have had to start all over and rebuild the O/S as loading the wrong 4ext on messed it up - would no boot past "go go go". Hence we need to know precisely which 4ext to load.
Whilst your instructions are great and will be/are a big help, we must calrify this to ensure the project is a success for others.
So one last vital piece of information needed, if you can help clarify.
Many thanks for your help
BTW. Are we talking about a completely bricked SD-Card or one that just need some fixing. i.e. has a small fat partition?

If you flash any recovery your WP7 will be gone. No matter what partition size you set. Sorry. That's exactly why it doesn't matter which 4EXT you take.
Regarding your second question: I was suspecting that Nysean1 only fixed a card with a small FAT partition. But he recons that he also fixed the DRM encrypted card from e.g. a Yuki or xboxmod ROM.

Yes I realize that things will be wiped. But I grabbed 4EXT from the Market which jammed at GoGoGo. So best we warn folk about that.
I downloaded and installed EXT4_CoreDroid_10_180_10 from your site thanks very much - seems all OK. Have Android NAND back running again
I have now tried it on a fully bricked SD Card, but no luck at all for me. Tried about 10 times will different options. So it seems it is not an unlock for a fully bricked card (unless I've done something wrong - you say any of the Ext4 from your site should work the same)
Tried it on a card with a small FAT partition, and that's worked, but I can do that using partition program on my PC, so no added value from my perspective
(unless Nysean1 can throw some more light on this)

Sorry it did not work for you. I am not hundred percent sure what kinda lock my card had. I wanted to run WP7 and android...so I installed WP7....did not quite partition the card for android as per the instructions.....this is the second time I failed to do that....WP7 without the option of android sd is lame....anyways therefore I wanted my card back...could not format it in anyways...via my camera...was not even recognized by my computer and mini tool....send usb unlock code....all failed for me....this happened to my last card also...i was never able to revive it...and did not work out any method I could find in xda and outside....but this time and with this diff. card 4ext was able to partition and format it back to normal. I can't even find that one anymore to try my new finding as I am aslo skeptic to try and take another chance with my current card as I use it everday....that I know for sure had Yuki rom installed when it first came out ...I am still searching for that card...and if I do find it I will certainly give feed back.
However....those who have installed ext4 will certainly appreciate it...since it is (I think) the best recovery you can have for you android...only thing is that some roms don't support ext4...so be aware of that.
Thanks for your explanation NYSEAN1
Thus your title/heading is fully correct - to unlock from Yuki rom.
I guess I got excited thinking that meant unlock a "bricked" SD card, which has been bricked through an error installing a WP7 rom such as Yuki rom. The two issues are different. However, you have not claimed the later case, but the first, and that is fair enough.
I have always hoped that an Android system might resurrect a fully bricked card- I still hope, but not their yet.
Thanks again
Edit 1: BTW thanks for putting me on to ext4. I do like it!!!
Edit 2:
Seems like the only way for a bricked card is for a Nokia device (or similar), which I don't have. See

If you couldn't reset the card by sending unlock cab, it simply means you did not suffer from the WP7 DRM encryption. That means your method is up until now nothing more than a faint hope. Someone has to really verify.
My theory:
It is from my perspective and experience much more likely that the file system, boot record or both had been damaged in a random way. since every partitioning tool pursues a different way of doing it's job, some might fail at your particular issue and some might get the job done. This time, it worked out for you with the 4EXT while all others failed.
Tools to try before giving up:
- windows format
- SD formatter from SD-association
- mini Tool
- EASEUS Partition Master
- Acronis
- 4EXT
To overcome the WP7 DRM encryption you would need a tool that forcefully ignores some SD-specific parameters and commands, which where originally invented to lock down these cards. As with all these systems, they only work if both content provider and content reader agree to stick you the specifications. If one doesn't, the encryption doesn't work. So far, only a certain edition of Nokias symbian does ignore the encryption command. BUT: I was hoping that also the 4EXT would maybe ignore it...

Hi, guys. I need some help, if possible. I ordered a A500 as a gift for my dad from TechForLess. It was shipped to me with 3.0.1 demo firmware...which is essentially unusable. When I reset, it just comes back.
I did a search and other people have had this issue. They flashed a ROM using Micro SD. I tried that, but it doesn't appear that my unit is recognizing the card in the MicroSD card reader.
I'm getting a refund, but they're letting me keep the unit, and I'm trying to get it up and running for my dad for Father's day.
How can I flash a ROM (any working ROM) on this unit, not using MicroSD? For what it's worth, my computer recognizes the unit, so if there's a way to do that, it might work.
I'm new to all of this. Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Yeah Baby, we can help!!!!
It all depends on what you want to do.
a. Do you want to keep it stock (factory). This is ok with warranty, but seeings it's a demo model, I would guess it doesn't come with much of a warranty. Not to mention a demo model is as useless as teats on a boar hog. So skip to step c.
b. You wanna make it rock? For the best reliabilty and functional use, you're going to have to root. With the OS you have, it's darn simple. Just access the android market, and download acer recovery installer to the tab.
Wait, you're not finished.
Now you should look here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205204&highlight=iconiaroot
Then you can run AcerRecovery and install a custom HC based rom.
c. You want to run a stock update for the tab.
Now, you can't just put any old rom on the tab's sd card, and expect it to install. It doesn't work like that. First, the rom you install, has to be named "update.zip", and it should be a full rom update install. Not a patched one.
Also, the procedure to install, requires some buttons to be held. Most importantly, Holding Vol+ and the PWR button. This forces the tab to look for the update.zip on the Ext SD card.
You need to go here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Grab a full update (you might need to decrypt it to pull the update. I would take a ComGen1. (after decrypt, open in 7zip, not extract)
Copy the update.zip to your Ext SD card, and do the step above to boot. This should install a stock full rom to the tab off the SD card.
Not many people get 3.0.1 tabs these days.....

Thanks-- but it's not reading my SD card, so I think the reader might not be working. I'm not worried about that for my dad, but I need a way to get a working ROM on there that doesn't involve the SD card reader. I'm hoping that's one of your tricks!
Your tablet comes with a built in SD card (basically the memory you have on your tablet) 8 gb or 16 gb I've flashed mods through the built in SD card but I've never tried a from so I can't speak on that but I think you will be able to if you just download the rom and try to flash it but I'm not 100% sure so wait for someone to let you know but that that's just an idea to throw at you.

If I can get it going with a normal ROM, it's a win. If not, it's a huge pain in the ass. The SD card not mounting is killing me! There HAS to be a way... Right?
Well, I managed to get it rooted without using an SD card. Then I installed Acer Recover, but it's still looking to install an update from the SD card, which it can't see. When I go into Clockwork recovery and try to flash that way, it finds an update.zip at /SDcard/update.zip. I thought if I could replace that file, it could do the trick...but I can't find it using my computer.
This is driving me insane? Any other thoughts for how I can do this without a working SD card reader in the tablet?

Yes. In CWM you will have to mount the USB stick though. Then you can flash from the stick drive. (not capable in the original version of CWM)
I also remember Thor at one time, made it possible to flash from internal memory, but not sure If I remember correctly.
I would suspect after you get running again with a real rom, your SD card will probably start working again. They may have it disabled for demo purposes.
I would just install one of the 3.2.1 customs instead of messing with the update.zip. They were designed to run from SD card. Till you get that issue fixed, I would run custom. You can get a stock rooted 3.2.1 in the dev forum.
Format your Ext SD to FAT32 on your pc after you get up and running.
MD
EDIT: One more thing. "IF" you install a plain STOCK 3.2+ rom, (a non-pre rooted stock rom) you will lose your CWM recovery and root. And the process to "roll-back" is a bit of a pain. Not impossible, just more steps again.
I need a stick to give it a shot, but fingers are crossed. Appreciate the help. I'll report back....

I believe in the newer CWM, you have to mount the USB in Mounts and Storage. Basically I think it switches between EXT SD and USB Storage. Never used it myself, but the option is there.
Also, you can install a zip from internal memory as well in the newer versions of CWM.
MD
In this version, I have the option to mount USB...I'm hoping that does the trick...because it was tough enough to find a root method that didn't involve the MicroSD slot.

Dude, You need to run AcerRecovery Installer. Install the newer CWM.
Im looking for any suggestions. I just got my moto x 1575 and soon after upgrading to MM, I installed a new micro SD and found that I could use it as a part of the internal storage. I opted for this feature and proceeded on to unlocking my BL afterwards (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3200808).
All seemed to be going well when I ran 'fastboot reboot' until it wouldnt let me get past the google account login window. This page just loaded endlessly. I rebooted and tried again multiple times with no success.
Next I go into TWRP and wipe data. After that, the phone started to freeze at the blue Motorola logo (before the animation).
Is there anyone who can help? I am wondering if I can simply flash and image and if so which image do I need to flash?
I have fastboot access but ADB will not connect.
I can boot into TWRP but SD memory seems to be messed.
If would really appreciate if someone could assist me with this and willing to donate to anyone who can get me going.
Which phone do you have/where you located (USA?)? Can't point you to a image to flash without knowing. Once you do find the correct image, format microsd card outside phone and put the image on the microsd.

Since you say you already have TWRP on the phone, pull sd card from the phone and format it in windows. No need to use ADB.

Thanks I was actually returning to say I got it resolved. In a similar was as you suggest.
The Micro SD is trash now I think (a shame to b/c I got the 64Gb card yesterday) windows will not format it, in any type format.
However, the adb issue I was having was related to the laptop I was using (running Win10) it seems. I got a laptop from someone else (running Win7) and connected while in TWRP and copied the exact ROM you suggested, bw03.
Wiped, flashed, wiped, and held onto my butt cheeks and it finally booted. I'm ecstatic as this was a Christmas gift.
Anyways... I found a place on Christmas Day with micro SDs (tried to charge me $20 for 8Gb.. lol) poped it in and chose the portable format option in MM and again, I am unable to access memory card and internal storage. I'm still trying to figure this out and will post anything worthwhile.
When you say you can't access card, you mean through windows? If so, you need to pull the menu down on the phone and select mtp when connected via the USB.

Yea, i know that. It does nothing when I select mtp. It reverts back to charging right after.
Yeah, I was reluctant to make sd card into internal. You get a warning that sd card will only work on MXP prior to execution. Not doing it until we get to bottom of this.

Yeah, I was reluctant to make sd card into internal. You get a warning that sd card will only work on MXP prior to execution. Not doing it until we get to bottom of this.

That's a smart move. I have been trying to understand how I fudged it.. I'm certainly not new at this and currently work as a server tech so I know most things like this are user error, but I did everything normally.
I've been trying things all kinds of ways. Installed Ubuntu just to see if I could have any luck there, but nothing.
At my work computer (Windows), I went back to the driver idea. I pluged it in but thought to revoke its previous auths... something I never tried before. Windows checked for the drivers and everything worked well after that.
I'm not sure if that would have resolved it the whole time, but it works well now.
Now i'm worried to even flash another ROM from storage. Ill likely transfer it to internal storage with ES explorer.
