Noob needs help - Totally overloaded with info!

Greetings all.
Firstly, thanks for such a great repository of info. I have successfully managed to root my phone using Chainfire's method. I'm supremely happy to have even accomplished that.
I'm not a tech noob, but I'm quite new to Androids.
The feeling of frustration at trying to learn new terms and make sense out of all this information is HUGE. I have seen various "noob" entitled threads, as well as threads (Like ChainFire's) that make it somewhat easier. However, there seems to be so many threads to look through, and different info/terms that at this point trying to add a battery percentage mod to the status bar (which I'm sure is an easy easy thing to some of you) has become quite the gargantuan task for me.
---to that topic i'm having trouble understanding what it means when people say "flash using CWM". I understand "flash" (i think) and i know what CWM is, but have no idea what steps to take to "flash the necessary apk" files.
Do i use CWM? I've seen mention of using a root explorer or just adding the files overtop.
Then I've read "backup first". Yes, i know i want to do that. I have Titanium Backup on my device. And I've backed it up> but then i read that i should be using Nandroid. Where the hell do i get that? lolz. I mean I've searched for it and found threads, but from HTC section. Is it even compatible? No D/L links...
arrrrgggggg!!!
I did find some resources from Villain rom. So at least I found some term definitions.
Speaking of Roms...
If I have KF3 on my phone, and i wanted to put Villain Rom v.2 on it, would i need to install KF2? Or is it recommended to put on KG1? Am I flashing that like I flashed the kernels when rooting (via odin)?

If you have rooted your phone using Chaninfiire Kernel you should have an app called CWM. you need to put the apk in your internal storage using PC, then open CWM, theer is an option to install apk. select that and browse to the file.. all done

it means backing up ur phone using CWM.. open CWM and theer is a backup option select that or just boot to recovery power off then Power+home key+ volume Up) and select backup from there

no ur not required to put KF2 first. flash the villain rom using CWM (install zip from sd card)

I did have a problem with the CWM, I did pretty much exactly as you mentioned - prior to me making this thread - and I used cwm to browse to the location with the apk on my sd card. installed... nothing happened.
re: cwm and back up - again, did as you had mentioned, but when i go into cwm and press "backup" it give me option to name the file, and then resets into recovery mode (i think - as i've used the buttons method to get to the same screen) but there is no "back up" option listed. also there is some csc error message. see picture.
re: villain rom. so to confirm, I do not have to change from kf3 to another kernel to install VR2.0?

according to that pic..u dont have cwm installed properly.. that recovery screen is from the default recovery which comes from the phone..ur not flashing your rooted kernel properly.. ur recovery screen should be orange in colour and it will be stated there clockwork mod recovery
and you can safely ignore that csc error..

I'm hoping with the Custom Rom it's got less bloatware, better battery life.

I never installed cwm as a separate action. Only used the "cwm" that came with chainfire's stuff. I've seen the orange colour you speak of in an faq I've found, but I'm not sure how to remedy this....
I am using the system as described for flashing kernels in Chainfire's thread.
1. debug mode on phone
2. phone into download mode (three buttons)
3. start Odin
4. plug phone into usb
5. browse to zip/tar file of unsecured
6. phone reboots
7. root phone
8. install secured kernel to sd card
9. use cwm to flash that kernel. (which did so successfully i believe)
Is there another step I should have done to install CWM? will reflashing the kernel via odin fix this?

ur puting the kernel in the PDA section ?? and it is the chainfire kernel ur flashing using ODIN??

Not unless bloatware has been removed . Read the rom posts in dev section .
Villain lite rom would be one with less bloatware or use the remove bloatware script same section .
Battery life is more than just the rom much is down to user apps installed .
Villian full rom thread has some useful battery info over the last ten or so pages .

That might have been the issue. I just reflashed CF kernel and had the CWM work differently for the back up. still not orange, but at least it actually backed it up!!! yaaaahooooo!

initially i had rooted with the one click method, and then still didn't have root so changed and did the chainfire method. but still put a stock kernel on after flashing and getting root with super one click. I think I didn't realize that the CF kernel means I get root without having to use superone click. and still put a stock kernel back on afterwards.

I purchased one from somewhere in the UK (off ebay), just waiting for it to arrive.
So now I've gotten my CWM working and i've backed up my phone with titanium and cwm (no need for nand i guess?) Can i safely try to add the mods for the battery %?

as far as i think..backup using cwm is nand backup..unless i am wrong
once you have cwm backup u can play around with mods

FAQS/Guide/Additional Info For Rooting S2 - High level summary

I rooted my S2 a few days back... there is a lot of info in the forums but spread all over the place and it took quite a long time to find the specific answers to some of the questions i had. Thus I've done a short form guide to help anyone looking to root and give them a bit of extended background and *hopefully* reduce all the copy threads/posts in the forum.
NB/ I'm no android expert. Please don't flame if something i've said is wrong. Let me know/PM me and I'll change it. This is only meant to be high level info!
1. What is rooting?

2. What are the warranty implications?
Warranty is void BUT you can return the phone back to *stock* (standard manufacturer ship state) so, as long as you don't bone anything in the root process you can get still get warranty returns.
3. What is [recovery]/[kernel]/[rom]?
Your samsung device memory is separated into different partitions to load different parts of the software to make you device work.

Typically you have the kernel partition which tells the device what to load on power on), you have the system partition where your ROM (main operating system is loaded) and you have the recovery partition which allows a user to access and write to the system partition (i.e. load custom roms).
Only difference on the galaxy s2 is that the kernel partition and recovery partition linked. What this means for you is that if you change the kernel, you also change the recovery.
4. What is stock [kernel][firmware]?

Essentially the stock kernel is the original Samsung kernel shipped on the device (split into many different variants subject to location, sub model, carrier, date etc...) and firmware essentially is the kernel with the Samsung Rom.

Yes you can use any Kernel from any country as long as it is for SGS2 with the correct hardware
Check the models are the same.
6. What's the difference between Cf-Root and Clockworkmod and which do i want?
CF-Root is simply a customised version of the clockwordmod recovery. It still functions the same but cf-root has it's own app for making direct recovery calls from within android as CF-root doesn't function with Rom manager, where pure clockworkmod recovery does work with rom manager.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a question of whether you want to use Rom manager really?
7. How do I root the samsung galaxy S2?
All I will say is..ENSURE KIES IS NOT RUNNING IN SYSTEM TRAY OR TASK MANAGER. KILL THE WHOLE PROCESSS TREE IF YOU FIND IT BEFORE DOING ANY ROOTING!

8. What is superoneclick and what is odin? Where do i get them?
Odin is a flash utility to allow you to push a kernel to your phone from your pc.
Superoneclick is a flash app that will root your phone from your pc.
If you don't want to use superoneclick then simply flash an unsecured kernel (i.e. CF-Root) using Odin and you'll get root already.
Look in the kernel posts and you'll find latest versions there.
9. Can i still get OTA (over the air) updates to my stock rom eventhough I've rooted?
you can update via Kies and root again. Kies wont detect if your phone is rooted or not as long as you are on Stock firmware.
10. How do i get back to stock (as if nothing has ever happened to the phone/factory ship)?

Flashing a full stock rom and kernel (firmware) using odin will remove everything.
11. What is this yellow exclamation mark and how do I get round it?
Whenever you access the download mode, and write a new kernel, your phone will know you've changed the kernel. The exclamation mark is simply a flag for samsung to easily know whether you've messed with the kernel on returns. You can easily get rid of it by using a jig OR re-flashing the stock kernel following an initial root...then re-flashing the zimage from the CWM image. - Jig is far easier and quicker though.

12. What is the custom binary download counter and how can I restore it?
A counter living in the kernel to record the number of times you've changed the kernel. Only way to remove it is to get a usb jig...
13. What is a jig and what does it do?
it's a little usb plugin from ebay then puts the phone into download mode (even if you bricked a kernel update) resets the kernel counter and removes the yellow exclamation mark.
Simply boot off the phone. Plug it in. The screen will say something like 'Erasing boot information'...then unplug it and re-boot. Very simple.
A jig is a cheap and essential piece of hardware that everyone rooting should invest in!
14. What is download mode and what is recovery mode and how do I access them?
Recovery > enter recovery with the key combination of Vol Up + Home + Power
Download > Accessible on all phones, regardless of kernel via Vol Down + Home +

Yes, so long as the kernel is compatible with the hardware and in some cases the rom.

Simply flash the CF-Root over the current CF-Root. However if you are updating a major version (i.e. CWM 4 to CWM 5) just check on CF-Root's thread first.
18. I've pwned my device? What do I do now?
Get a jig to put back into download mode and then flash the original stock firmware.
19. My device is sim locked and/or full of carrier apps? How can I get rid?
To get rid of carrier branding and apps simply flash a different firmware/rom that isn't branded from a carrier. See questions 4 and 5 above for lists of the different stock firmwares.
To get rid of the sim lock you have two options:
1. Root and then use one of the apps from market place (mixed success across the boards); or,
2. Extract some data from your phone in hex code and try and calculate the unlock code yourself.
I bought mine sim free so not done any of this but a quick scan of the forums turned up these two posts which may be useful.

20. What is a 'cooked' rom?
Cooked roms are just roms that someone has made based on the stock rom with slight high level changes. They are different from developed roms such as Cyanogen or Villainrom which receive significant low level modifications and developments.
Check out the Rom kitchen project which when released in stable version will allow you to build your own rom on the fly and select all the apps etc.. you want in it: brilliant example of the benefits of Android!

21. What is CSC and how do i change my ROM CSC?
CSC = consumer software customisation. The file contains the software packages specific to that region, carrier branding and also APN settings for data connection, SMS, MMS etc...
Three ways to change it (NB it will wipe your device!):
1. Flash a multiCSC ROM and that use CSC Select from Market;
2. Flash a multiCSC ROM and type *#272*Device IMEI# into the dial pad and selecting the csc of your choice;
3. Flash a ROM using ODIN, then flash the desired CSC separately using ODIN.
22. Do you just install Rom over an existing?
Some people do and 9 times out of 10 it works, however I personally boot into recovery, wipe all data/factory reset and wipe Davlik cache > then power off > boot into download mode and install the new rom as above. Best way to ensure a 100% clean install.
23. What is the best way to go from Android 2.x to Android 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich)?
I struggled trying to get Titanium to quickly and efficiently migrate my data (I'm sure it's very possible but I didn't have the time nor inclination to work around it) therefore I just restored my apps data after manually installing the apps from the marketplace. Once you have a stable working phone on ICS future titanium backup/restores are easy as normal.
24. Titanium Backup? What's the difference in app colour?
Menu => Legend;
Green = App - with data that you should backup;
White = App - should be fine to backup;
Red = System app/service - Wouldn't backup as typically installed by default.
Other tools apps that will be helpful are Titanium Backup (from Android Marketplace https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en) and also get a Dropbox account (for free) from Free 2GB Cloud Storage from Dropbox as Titanium can sync to Dropbox.
25. Anything else of note?

Debranding is easy... just flash a rom that isn't branded. See q. 19.

I want to flash back to stock firmware, but after download from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278, instead of PDA, CSC and MODEM files, there were several image files (Power ISO). What to do with them? I desperately need to download stock firmware with MSR - CSC... Any help would be so appreciated!

Please, me too. I just bought mine too and is rooted, but my cell phones were much easier than the tablets. Either that or I just don't have the patients anymore. Maybe a dummies way to install custom rooms on a500? Lol.

Hi guys welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the acer tab!!!!
Things are very different with this device, whats 'normal' for other android devices is not 'normal' for our tab!!!!
So first of all, dont try installing cwm or a rom the 'normal-this-is-the-way-I-did--it-on-myphone', you will end up with a brick!!!
2nd, you both have working systems at present, so we'll try to keep it that way.
Open up a file explorer and navigate to this:
/sys/firmware/fuse/acer_cpuid
One of the first things that are different is this: acer_cpuid
It should look something like this:
288424344009597 - now u need to add a 'zero' to the front:
0288424344009597 - this is your cpuid, back it up in multiple places if need be, just dont ever lose it - IF anything 'goes wrong' at any time you will NEED this number to save your tab from eternal brickdom!!
3rd once you do get your 'cpuid' go to the 'sbk generator' here.
This generates your 'sbk' or secure boot key and will give you something like this:
0x93588800 0x33CE8901 0x0BED6D03 0x30737899.....
OK then, now you have your cpuid/sbk you can start thinkning about what rom you want to install on your tab.......
Read the OP(Original Post) of your desired rom. This will tell you EVERYTHING you need in order to flash it - remembering always that 'Acer' does not do things the 'normal' way!!!!!!
Most of the custom ICS/JB roms on here all require the 'patched / unlocked bootloader'... In fact, even installing a custom recovery, cwm, twrp or public recovery, for the first time....will require the BL to be 'patched' first....and yes, even flashing this is not done the 'normal' way....tho the process can be complicated there are PLENTY of guides and auto tools to make it easier for you....
The 'patched bootloader flash' will also include a 'custom recovery' too, and you can choose from 3-4 options....amazing but i'd advise to use cwm 1.7.3, until u get up and running, after that you can go crazy flashing anything you like!!
So basically there are 5 main steps to getting a custom rom installed.
1. Install the Acer Drivers and the android_sdk drivers
2. Get your cpuid and generate your 'sbk'
3. Your desired rom is on your external sd card
4. Put your tab in 'apx mode' which allows u access to download mode
5. Install the patched v8 bootloader/recovery - either manually using nvFlash or using the auto tools.
Personally I prefer the manual nvFlash method, if you get an error it will at least give you an error message...the auto tools will just get 'stuck'

If you want to use the auto tools then apxFlash tool, or afterOTA tool you can find both in the 'bootloader' thread. And a step by step for apxflash tool also in my sig....or this excellent one here by user jdgM3NT4L here...
please be sure to read these posts very carefully and if there is something you do not understand then please dont hesitate to ask , there are plenty on here who will help you thru the process....AND its easier to offer help at this point rather than trying to do so when you've bricked it.....
As far as roms are concerned, you cant go past 'civato's FLEX roms' very stable and no issues i'm on cm10 and havent had a problem with it.....Of course it depends on what you require but I'd start with one of the flex ones.
Most peeps here have no trouble with this process, those that do, usually try things the 'normal' way, then find out they need their cpuid/sbk to get out of trouble and of course they dont have it....this makes things most difficult.... there are a few tabs with motherboard issues that have needed to be sent to acer....other than that, he only other issue you may have are driver related, check out the cpuid thread for anything driver related and lots of other background info too....theres also a zip file there that has a mini-sdk kit, to save u downloading the full android-sdk....
i think thats all i can think of at the moment, sorry for the long post and all the caps and bold text - just trying to save you alot of unnecessary grief...

Lol, as always preparation determines the success of the final outcome....and yeah with the tab 95% of yr time and energy is spent preparing!!! The actual flashing process takes only a few minutes...
Of course u could revert to hc 3.1 where everything is 'normal' i.e. one click root, flash cwm, flash rom, done....
Gosh, even hc 3.2 was locked down and unrootable....
So in the grand scheme for us to even be able to have stable ICS roms, let alone cm10 on the a50x.is.purely down to those wonderfully clever devs we have here..who were never gonna let a.locked bl, get in their way..
OK its complex I'll admit, but stock ICS is c**p and the lives of our tabs extended past wot Acer ever thought....and guys like gersma and.blackthund3r have built auto tools to make things easier

effort and is actually alot simpler to do than it is to describe how to do it...think of.trying to explain how to ride a bike and writing all those steps out....much easier to help them thru it by just getting them on the darn thing and doing it....dontcha think??

Well, I could give u a a d/l link for 3.1 if u really do wanna go back....but I think gersma's afterOTA tool can do it too, tho I've Neva used it for that so can't really comment....
Oh, one other thing, you'll wanna back up all yr personal stuff, music, photo's and wot not especially going from one build to another, and most of the custom ROMs require a complete wipe and format of yr data partition too before install, just so u know!!

I'm currently on stock 4.0.3 rooted for A500. I have obtained my cpuid and SBK. When I go to recovery mode, I see a droid with triangle and exclamation mark. I tried flashing twrp but I still saw the same droid. I now know that I need to flash a different bootloader with recovery included.
My question is that if I flash the new bootloader which will allow me to put a custom recovery, during that process will my current ROM be removed or wiped out? If so, what do you recommend for backing up the app in the current stock ROM? Titanium Backup? BTW, I don't have an external SD card; all I'm using is the internal 8GB

Yes u need the v8 bootloader to get a recovery installed...
Always check the original post of the rom you install for special instructions regarding bootloaders.....this applies to all custom Roms even stock pre rooted ones.
Yup TB to back up yr apps and data - dont restore immediately...make sure everything is stable first.
If u dont have an ext. SD card, the EUU method doesn't require one, and as slayinu said, it would make it easier if u had one especially for the update.zip methid

I have the a500 running ota 4.0.3....well from the official app. I have it rooted and running superuser yet I downloaded the Acer recovery installer app from the market and get the recovery verified failed message when booting into any custom recovery and the dead android with the exclamation mark....I know I need a patched or an unlocked boot loader but I cannot find one I downloaded the afterota but it doesn't do anything on my computer...idk what to do the frustration is gonna make me break this thing and just go buy a newer tab running jb ....help please!

Seems weird afterota "doesn't do anything"...did you install the drivers?? Did it give u yr cpuid/sbk you cannot do anything without this AND if u muck things up its the only thing that will get u unbricked? Are u using a micro USB cable? Do u have USB debug enabled?
If u go to the root guide in my sig you'll find d.load links and all the guides to help u install the v8....take special note of the boot.p file u need to rename or delete in /system....
For more info on getting yr cpuid/sbk see the cpuid guide in my SIG or the sticky in dev forum...

Hi voodoo, no, neither of you are being dumb!!! It CAN be a complicated procedure, we try to make our guides 'simple' but theres ALOT that can go wrong
Yes the last link you posted will flash the patched bootloader!!!
- but basically this is what SHOULD happen
Note: The only way to get a custom ICS rom on your tab is with the v8 bootloader by skrilx_cz. This must be flashed via nvFlash/apx mode.
Note:The only way to install a custom recovery like cwm or twrp etc is with v8 bootloader.
Note: You cannot use Acer Recovery Installer unless you have the v8 installed.
Note: Rom Manager does not support our Acer Tabs...please don't use it to flash 'anything'!!
OK heres an overall view of the process:
1. Install Acer and adb/fastboot drivers
2. Retrieve your CPUID...
3. ...and use it to generate your SBK
4. Download your ICS or JB rom and copy to your sd card (internal or external)
5. Enter apx mode to begin the flash!!! or use apxFlash tool
5. Use balckthund3rs apxFlash tool and follow the instructions: hint: dump and save your bct!!!
5. If using civato's manual nvFlash method - Put your tab in apx mode and run the .bat file
5. AfterOTA Tool is only for those tabs which have OTA'ed to ICS!!!
The main issues you will have with the actual flashing process itself is a partitioning error or a bct error - and both of these are easily fixed...UNLESS your tab in one of the few with a hardware fault which only a new motherboard can remedy
Once you get the big white "PASS" on your tab, boot straight to your new custom recovery, do the FULL WIPES and flash your new rom....DONE!!!

Well ... i now used AfterOTA - but not in a virtual machine - now just natively installed on my macbook via bootcamp (windows). Worked. I now have a V8-Bootloader (the tab shows me this when iam booting it up).
Whats the next step to flash a new ROM? Iam ready to do that? Or is there any other step needed by now?

I now just tried flashing a custom rom - so i copied the *.zip to my USB-Stick (FAT32) - because i read, i can use an USB-Stick as an micro-sd card.
Tried booting into recovery-kernel - worked for me, but the only thing i can see: a lying android with an red sign ("!").
Did i something wrong?

Oh dear....if u had a stock rom on there then its overwritten
your newly flashed recovery....you need to delete or rename
the "boot.p file" in /system..then reflash the v8...
The very next step should be to enter recovery and flash your
desired rom....

So, it now just works everything.
Used Acer Recovery-Manager to re-flash the recovery - worked fine for me.
But: i tried several 4.1 and 4.2-ROMS ... is it correct, that there's no Google Marketplace anymore on 4.1 and 4.2?

I decided to create this thread because i would like to help members of XDA forum who may not fully understands how somethings work. I have seen many people posting their question in some developers thread and the question is just left there unanswered for months, and that is pretty normal! The developers are very busy making all those roms and kernel for you guys! I personally feel that those problems should be fixed, so i decided to create this thread, just to answer you questions! Common question:
​What is "rooting"?
- Well i know most of you might have came across this word before: "rooting." Rooting is actually the process of giving your lovely smartphones, tablets, the ability to gain "privileged control or root access." By giving the device root access users can freely write/replace the system application, and also control the cpu clock rate [OC/UC]. GUIDE OF HOW TO ROOT GALAXY NOTE 2 (N7100): coming soon
What is CWM [clockworkmod recovery]?
-CWM is a custom recovery for android smartphones and tablet. It allows you to do things that are not possible to do in the stock recovery. CWM allows you to do things such as flashing custom kernels and roms, it will also allow you to make a NANDROID backup which can be used to restore if you encounter any problem after flashing new roms or kernel. If you would like to know more about CWM try research in the internet you will find loads of information about it.
What are "custom roms"?
Custom roms are roms that are made by other developers that is not the manufacturer of the device, the roms are customized in the way the developers wants. Some of the famous custom roms are: Cyanogenmod, Miui, etc. Custom roms can be based on the device stock rom, or it can be based on the AOSP [android open source project] source, just like the Cyanogenmod. What are GB/HC/ICS/JB?

1.Make sure you have the program ODIN. Download the attachment below if you dont have it.

3.Extract the .zip file to some where you can access it easily. Make sure that you do not extract it twice
4. Run the program ODIN.exe
5. Click the PDA button [do not try to be clever and click other things]=> choose the file you have extracted Cf-autoroot...tar.md5
6. Put you phone into DOWNLOAD MODE. (HOW?: Hold the POWER+VOLUME DOWN+HOME keys (together). You will be ask to continue or to restart the device=> press continue
7. Connect the device the computer using the USB cable
8. You should see a yellow box in ODIN, if there is no yellow box DO NO PROCEED!=> Disconnect the USB from the PC and then restart the phone into download mode again, then reconnect the phone. [make sure usb debugging is on]
9. Do not check REPARTITION
10. Click start and Be happy [This stage should be long, if its taking you hours, you must have done something wrong]
11. Hit the "Thanks" button! and also go and thanks chainfire too!
Alternatives:
*** Samsung kies/Samsung usb driver must be installed in you PC***
1. Download all the files you need below! Galaxynote2root.zip
2. Make sure that USB debugging is on=> setting->developer options->enable usb debugging
3. Extract the download .zip file into a place you can access easily
4. Run ODIN...exe
5. Turn you device into recovery mode=> HOLD POWER+VOLUME DOWN+HOME
6.Connect your device to the PC
7. There should be a yellow box appear in odin, if not DO NOT PROCEED! Try restarting your phone into download mode again, and please ensure that you have usb debugging on and also have samsung usb driver installed in you computer.
8. Click on "PDA" and choose the file cwm6-root-note2.tar
9. Click start and wait for a few second.......DONE! You will now have a rooted device+CWM (What is CWM? Read first post) You're now not a NOOB!
10. Hit the "thanks" button!
What should i do after rooting the device?
1. Stay with the boring stock rom that was made by your manufacturer.
or
2. Flash a custom rom and enjoy the smoothness and customization of the rom
Guide on how to flash a custom roms:
1. Download the rom you like: i would now like to breifly explain the difference between Aosp based custom rom and stock based custom rom.
Aosp [android open source project] rom:
-This type of rom are commonly known as "pure google roms" there will be no Touchwiz or SenseUI. The most famous Aosp based rom is the cyanogenmod rom. Aosp roms is most oftenly the lightest rom, but this does not mean that there is less customization. This type of rom will often gives better/faster performance than the stock rom, but however it can be less stable.
Stock based custom rom:
-Stock rom are roms that is made by your manufacturer, it is made specifically for your device. Developer will use this rom as a base and add some customization to the rom. Developer may also take out some things they do not like out of the rom, these are often known as "bloatwares." By using stock based custom roms, user will benefit from its stability, and some of the function made specifically for their device, e.g. S-pen functions.

2. The rom you have downloaded should be in a .zip file ready for you to flash. DO NOT extract the file!
3. Connect your device to the PC (you do not need to turn it into download mode)
4. Copy the zip file into your INTERNAL sdcard (your phone storage), place it some where you can access it easily.
5. At this point make sure that your battery level is higher than 30% (i would recommend that it is fully charged or at least higher than half).
6. Reboot into CWM recovery [How? HOLD POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME]
7. If you are coming from stock rom or any other rom that is not the one that you will be flashing, you will need to make a full wipe!
8. DO A NANDROID BACKUP!=> go to backup and restore=>backup
9. Do a factory reset/data wipe
10. Wipe cache partition
11. advanced->wipe dalvik cache
12. Now it's time to flash the rom, to do this just select "install zip from sdcard" and then choose the .zip (your rom that you have downloaded) from you internal sdcard. ***Your rom that you have downloaded might use the aroma installer, just follow what it says and select what you would like to be installed.
13. DONE! *** first boot might take around 3-5 minutes, if you get a bootloop, try booting into recovery and do a full wipe and reflash the rom, if it still does not boot, go into recovery and restore from your NANDROID backup
14. Hit the "thanks" button!!!!!!!!

Q: If I root my device, will it add to the counter? I know it won't but just trying to make sure. From what I know, only flashing ROMs will add to the binary counter.
Also, how to do a MD5 SUM CHECK?
Lastly, I think you forgot to mention to flash GAPPS as well.

You can grab some free md5 generators from the net, some of them can compare two files and tell you weather they are identical or not.
In your case, you need to compare the md5 of the downloaded file to the md5 of the original one on the server.
What's the point of comparing md5, just to make sure that you have EXACTLY the same file on your hard drive, because flashing corrupted files may damage your phone.

I bought a new Samsung galaxy note 2 GT-N7100.
I want to be able to remove the unecessary applications (such as Flipboard, Talk etc...)
People in XDA recommend me to root my phone but I think that I understood something: rooting a phone will just allow me to flash a CF on my phone (but will not allow me to remove apps that I dont want) am I right?
If I'm right, then it is impossible for me to keep the manufactured Rom and to be able to remove apps that i dont want.
Then, I should install CWM, root the phone AND install a CF for being able to remove what i want.
But the I want to keep the manufactured Rom on my phone and being able to remove what i want but it seems that is impossible.
I 'm...very confused and certain threat in the fora give me contradictory infos. I need to be sure.

You can root the stock rom and use titanium backup (or similar) to uninstall the aps you dont want. This is what I have done. No need to put a custom firmware on your phone. You dont even need CWM.

Maybe its me being a pain but maybe you should only have the info for n7100 and n7105 because folk could get confused maybe.. or re-highlight them a diff colour as to not be confused.. I have a free day tomorro I can dig out some guides and pass them here then you need to see about getting this made into a sticky.

Rooting your phone is the first step for everything else.
Flashing CF will root your phone.(Some version of CF include a CWM some dont)
So you can, only root or root AND install a recovery(CWM)
To flash custom ROM or mods you need CWM but you don't need CWM if you just want to remove bloatware(unwanted apps).
Once your phone is Rooted you need an app to remove bloatware(Titanium backup is one of them)

What I want to do more than anything with root is to be able to make in app purchases. I don't understand why they have to make buying from outside the US so hard.
Anyway, I pray all the directions are there and are right as bricking the Note 2 would not be good.

Rooting your phone is the first step for everything else.
Flashing CF will root your phone.(Some version of CF include a CWM some dont)
So you can, only root or root AND install a recovery(CWM)
To flash custom ROM or mods you need CWM but you don't need CWM if you just want to remove bloatware(unwanted apps).
Once your phone is Rooted you need an app to remove bloatware(Titanium backup is one of them)

If you are happy with your Note, than it's not necessary.
I rooted mine, because it was still on 4.0.3, and that is the reason for the many bad reviews on the internet.
After upgrading to 4.1.2, it was like a whole new tablet.

Btw you're in correct forum.When you wrote tab people will confuse it with galaxy tab and root will not slowing down your note.

I actually liked my Note even at 4.0.3.. but I rooted so I could use the Multiwindow manager for multiwindow.. EVERYWHERE!

So that I will try and root but BTW just asking is HighXXXXXXXX CMW Recovery good or Darkman Recovery Good ?
TWRP is only for stock rom right ?

There are many benefits to root. All the flashable files here require it.
But technically you will void your warranty.
However there are ways to get back to stock and "unroot" so mostly no one will know the difference if you have to return it.
Both recoveries are good, but HighOnAndroid supported a couple ROMs that Darkman didn't, though I'm not sure this is still the case

How about TWRP Recovery ? TWRP Recovery only work in stoock rom ?

You will need to flash the HighXXXXXXXX CMW in ODIN to get root and cwm. You can then flash either darkman recovery with CWM, TWRP recovery or stay as is..
TWRP recovery isa modified recovery like the other 2 and requires root to use. If you look around you'll find the stock recovery too.

I root my tab with Darkman Recorvey is easy then I tot . Thx you guys .

Yes! Rooting is the way to go. There are ways around the warranty issues.
My main reason for rooting is for these essential apps:
Titanium Backup
Ad Blocker
Mobile ODIN
Triangle Away
ROM Toolbox Pro
and many more apps that have useful extended capabilities once rooted.

Some Con's of rooting
1) good mobile app no longer works after rooting.
So if u use good mobile for checking corporate emails, rooting device will break this.
2) there will be some overhead for you to upgrade device when any new firmwares are released. If u are a very busy professional, then this is an overhead you can live without.
3) there are and there always will be chances that you may brick your device.
4) I think u legaly void warranty on device by unlocking it. (I am assuming u want to root to load different firmware)
I am not discouraging.. just givin you other side of the coin.

Sorry to bump a three month old thread, but would anyone know whether the Lotus Traveler app used for syncing corporate email and calendar works after rooting? Good is trash, so I'm not surprised it wouldn't work. There's not much of a downside finding out for myself by rooting my Note 10.1 because I intend to keep flying stock on my Note 2; but I thought someone might save me the time and trouble.

For Lotus Traveler - I have no idea. I am unlucky enough to have Lotus Domino for our corporate e-mail and I hate it with a passion.
I have installed and configured Aqua Mail to connect to our Domino server (IMAP) and I can confirm that it works perfectly after rooting. You just need your IT guys to ensure that you have web access enabled. I set mine to check for mail every 15 minutes, if it's more urgent than that then why is it an email anyway.

- rooting under normal circumstances shouldnt slow your system, in fact most devs i believe will attempt to make their roms bring out the best performance from that particular tab/phone you may own, throught software optimizations, in cojunction with working as best as it can with your specific hardware, although, sometimes you may have a N8013(american wifi version), the dev may have the n8000(3g version).......n810 is the european wifi version...................weve been mixing and matching rom versions here, i.e. using a n8000 rom on a n8010 hardware, ive done it, as far as i know, no adverse effects, well at least no obvious signs of em
- Usually, the process of flashing a rom will first involve rooting your tablet, and then flashing a recovery, which replaces the official one that may already be on your tab, the official one is usually pretty limited in what you can do, the custom RECOVERY is flashed because it gives you these options, but not limited
-factory reset
used when, flashing new rom, best to use the recovery when ever you wanna factory reset, i dont know if this was a oje of, or just specific to my situation, but ive used the android factory reset on my tf201 asus prime, after having rooted, custom recovery and been running a custom rom for some time, and it soft brick, since thats happenened ive been shy to do it on any android device, which is cool, as the custom recovery is a beatiful thing.......maybe someone can expand on or correct that suspicion
- wipes
cache- wipe your app cache

factory/data reset- brings back your android back to its original state, wipes your data, that means, all apps installed, all settings changed
format - allows you to format the different seperate sections of your android rom, example of the different sections would be......kernel, os, sd hardrive ........
nandroid - the best part of a custom recovery in my opinion, the ability to completely back up your rom, settings, apps, homescreens, widgets......essentially, restoring your android EXACTLY where you left off, the few seconds before, it takes to boot into recovery and start the backup procedure..........you can also backup and restore only certain sections of your rom, so you may decide to back up just the kernel, or you may decide to restore, JUST the kernel from a FULL previous backup (that is, all sections backed up, minus, the sd hardrive,
Unless you specifically FORMAT the sd card, it usually wont be touched......id advice caution and reading up, before making a decision to format sd harddrive, with a custom RECOVERY, that may not know the requirements to your android device, i.e. a custom kernel ported from another android device from another company....plus, formatting sd harddrive is not really a thing done all the time, not unless you are thinking about starting from scratch, i mean, REALLY fresh, disclaimer:this would wipe any files you have stored on your android devices, specifically, documents, pics, vids so on so forth

tweaked stock rom, speed, battery other mods
-CM (CynogenMod)
third party rom, built from the ground up, kinda....there are other different flavors of third party roms, CM is one of them
-when flashing a new rom, it is strongly advised by most devs to wipe cache/davlick and factory reset....before flashing, this helps avoid any conflicts with the previous rom and the new rom......at this point, if you were to reboot, rather then flash the rom, you would have essentially reset the rom to its original state, that means re-entering your wifi, changing settings, installing apps, generally a pain in the ass, if you find your self having to do it to many times in a short period.....titanium backup(root) is your friend, does a good job at backing up your apps and wifi.....havent figured out how to backup the settings i change in the android setting

This free app, is a life saver when your new rom doesnt give you the option to reboot into your recovery, sometime found in hold power button/restart/recovery.......just more quicker then the manual way......especially when your having to google up the hardware method because you've not done it in a while and forgotten......which i believe is power off/hold volume down key/then press hold power button/wait for samsung logo/then let go of all buttons and reapettedly press volume up key untill the recovery shows up.......if you end up in DOWNLOAD mode, hold power to switch off, and repeat the process, changing the volume key, its one or the other, one takes you to the recovery, the other to download mode......so just reverse the volume keys, same method, just up instead of down
- supersu/superuser
installable app, that hands out root permission to apps that ask for root, if you dont expresly give persmision, using a supersu app, the app asking for root permission most likely will not work.... .....this app is installed as part of the rooting process
- afwall+ (free)
third party wifi/3g firewall, requires root........allows you to control what apps are able to use your wif/3g......i think its a passive firwall, as in, it uses very little of your resources, in the way it operates

- rom flashing
sometimes, if you have already flashed a custom rom, and the dev has released the next version of his custom rom, as long as no drastic changes have been made between the two versions, you are able to flash the new version over the old version, keeping all your settings/apps/homescreen/widgets.......although a cache and davlik wipe is usually suggested if doing so

yea i would do it. it brings life to an old tablet. the 80XX tablets were abandoned by samsung. there are custom roms for Oreo the latest Android OS for N8000. i have a 8020 but no custom roms at the moment.
