Just read this. Sony Xperia S will NOT be getting JB, no surpise seeing Sony's support on a new phone that is not that old getting the boot after ICS...... thats... pathetic in my opinion. No word on Xperia PLAY (and dont go off on a rant, I personally DO NOT care about ICS/JB... sitting just fine with my gaming on GB)
I am merely making this known to everyone.... and for Xperia S users.... if I were you I would be pissing on Sony's front door......

No offense but did you read the article? Its not that long. Last two sentences were...
"Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an upgrade, no?"

Given how slow they are, not even releasing phones with ICS from stock in my country, and phones are still waiting on their ICS update, you can't take that as "Xperia S won't be getting JB"
Imo no flash support on JB makes it terrible (for my use anyway) because that was always something that android had over ios. And Yeah i watch a lot of football matches off streams which requires flash player.
Im still happy with GB on the Xperia Play everything is fine and working.
I love this phone and it'll take something really special for me to replace the Xperia Play.
S6? No iPhone 9?No Xp2? Of course
You can still use flash on JB

To be fair, to me that sounded like it getting JB with the project butter feature missing.
If it doesn't get it though, that's just terrible, even the Sony fanboy in me think's that's complete BS!
You can?
If we didn't get ICS, what would make you think we would get JB?
The only thing left to do is showing sony how you appreciate their update philosophy and stop buying their crap.
The play will have been my last sony phone for sure. I wouldn't risk to buy another Sony phone, just to find out the next android version won't be coming to my phone, because sony can't be bothered to keep their customers happy.
How long have those new Xperias been out, 3 months at best? Already they make you feel stupid for making the choice to get one of these
Haha lol,
Xperia 2011 won't get it official but xperia s will.
That's a promise they maked to google
And don't say xperia 2011 needs to get it, it won't. HTC and Samsung are just the same.
They say they are fixing ics bugs first. They don't say: xperia s won't get it!!!

No you cant, the webkit core has it specifically removed. If you sideload flash then you MIGHT get flash support with a fully alternative render engine like Opera Mobile, but for legal reasons they will probably block it too.
I dont really care about embedded flash either, if a site is still using SWF or FLV containters instead of HTML5 standards then they deserve to be left behind. YouTube moved from Flash to HTML5 over a year ago, many sites have since.

They also promises ICS for the play. I agree that the article says clearly that Sony Mobile has no plans for JB on Xperia S.... it was a flagship phone and should have been left a prototype IMO. NXT series my ass....

I like it. It sounds like they're going to straight-up release it for use with Flashtool. With the work that the developers have done in porting roms to the R800x, chevyowner in particular, it should be a really good development in terms of updates.
please add cdma to this thread title, otherwise a lot of gsm use will get a shock for their life xD
It doesn't really pertain specifically to CDMA. It's a general deal, apparently, that Sony is delaying, and aren't releasing OTAs.
Verizon's Firmware is different from Sony's, so I still believe if Verizon does update your devices that it will be OTA, As of other carriers, I don't know.
The .145 firmware was a UK firmware that supported CDMA variants, which is mostly the Verizon Xperia Play. I believe if Sony could do it then, they can do it again. I'm holding out hope for this one.
I'm patiently awaiting the UK ICS Rom for my r800x.

Yeah... but atleast they've told us that if it'll run on 2011 Xperia devices or not so we don't jump in straight and update to Ice Cream Sandwich which then would be a problem for us.
So, I guess all us with a 2011 Xperia model will have to stay on Gingerbread. Well I don't mind as long as everything runs smoothly which it does on Gingerbread.
I am still a unhappy though cause I was looking forward to ICS I waited so long !
I had a feeling it was a bad sign when Verizon offered me a free upgrade..... Glad they chose to grease the squeaky wheel.... Still sucks though....
You know what? I think sony tells us bullsh*t... my friend has Nexus S with OFFICIAL ICS and it's perfectly smooth. This phones specs are similar to ours - 512 MB of RAM and 1GHz CPU. There aren't any problems on it so it means having nicely optimized ICS on our phones is possible but it seems Sony are sh*tting pants now and telling us right before ICS launch that it won't be running smooth because it needs more resources. I think they are too lazy, there were always problems with their company if we talk about upgrades. X10 has got 2.3 for 8 months and it's still full of bugs. I'm sure I'm not the only one who afraids of this upgrade and not the only one who's mad at them (look at the comments on their blog). They promised great update and now they made us thinking is there a sense of upgrading to ICS if it's so slow in their opinion. Shame on you, Sony.
EDIT: Besides - Sony will soon launch Xperia Neo L in China. The phone with THE SAME hardware specs as our phones. So that means its ICS will be slow too? What's the point in releasing the phone with "slow SQL, low ram and heavy CPU use"?

lol true. It's got nothing to with ICS but it's all got to do with the Sony Delevopers !
And it's good that they actually highlight these possible issues anyway! I would much rather know this than update blindly and find them later by myself. Then again, what people seem to want is to hear that their device is magical. It sells better indeed.

LMFAO that's not even for phones, just tablets..Jellybean is nothing new
The whole will be 2.5 yrs old by the time its in wide distribution. Won't be a snowballs chance in hell...
Lets take this ...it was much easy for sony to update all xperia 2011 as at end of day all were running same core components ...sammy have fragmented hardware so would take considerable amount of time and money for each to make ...
2012 sony also doing same by sticking to novathor and same gpu so no problems for updates
Sent from Galaxy Ace which just landed on "MOON"
I think XPlay can handle as much as ICS. They wouldn't update their 2011 devices in 2013, maybe only Xperia S, P, U, sola (2012 Sony devices) etc. will get that new update.
I would not even hold your hopes up for official ICS.

Sony has said that they don't particularly believe ICS will run as well as we want it to on their phones. Given that, and the fact that Jellybean will be advanced beyond ICS, as well as the fact that Jellybean has been said to be tablet-only, I don't think Android 5 will ever, ever see the light of day on the Xperia Play.
Wait, Jellybean is tablet only? I thought the whole point of ICS was to merge the tablet and handheld branches on android into one unified platform moving forward. I guess that went out the window. Maybe there is something to that whole "fragmentation" argument after all.

I thought so, too.
@jdz7t8 and crono141
I think they mean that Android 5.0 will be primarily focused on features for Tablets. It will also come for Smartphones though because then it wouldn´t make any sense what they´ve done with Android 4.0 . Seriously, would be dumb to fragment Android even more from a app developer sight.
And Android 5.0 for our Xperia Play... Well, i doubt it will happen. Look at other smartphone devices. The Galaxy S didn´t get ICS because it got two majour updates (2.2 and 2.3) and it was two years old at the time when the update plan from Samsung was released which is very old for a smartphone (usually 1 year support). And it was successful! ICS is possible from a hardware perspective. The main reason is to prompt customers to buy a new smartphone. Other companies are even worse in this matter(Motorola, LG).
I mean Sony isn´t bad. They did it better with the 2011 Xperia Line. But they
want to sell their new phones. I would appreciate if they bring that update, but unless they announce anything in regards to that, i believe there isn´t any update for us.
I think that Sony should be focusing on giving their customers a good experience with their phones. It would benefit all their us customers who typically get their phones every two years. They need to keep their us customers loyal to their brand right?

Is Jellybean better than Gingerbread in terms of memory/ram usage ?
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
Maybe, but highly unlikely. I fear Sony may just get lazy and say 4.1 may screw up the PLAY just like the ICS, but look at the custom roms we have now like markphyton's rom. The developers were probably too lazy.
Some people don't realize that some people don't want to root or unlock their bootloaders, so stop saying sh1t like "get a ROM".
The only way to make every1 get a taste of everything here is to create an .ftf file that could be flash using flashtool. But there's no guide as how to make a .sin file so it could be bundle to be an .ftf file. If there is every1 can run custom rom, custom kernel n overclock their play. So until the methods to make a .sin file be discovered we just need to keep unlock our BL n root our Play. What a drag...
Kindly Hit Thanks Button if i've help u in any way.
The funny thing is, there will be as much support for games as there is on ics. So games that don't work on ics won't work on jb. And sony will do what they did with ics, if you want it then unlock or get lost. But in all seriousness, you're living in a dream if you think the play will get jb officially.

From where did you read JB is an upgrade to ICS?
All I read was that JB was to bring in more performance in addition to ICS features, so that basically means you don't need to be on ICS to have JB.
Think of it as GB=WindowsXP; ICS=WindowsVista; and JB=Windows7:
GB is fast but looks like turd, ICS looks awesome but slow, and JB looks awesome but fast. From that analogy, you can always upgrade from XP straight to Se7en, thus, you can always upgrade from GB to JB granting the manufacturer grants it.

He's more on about the reasons of why Xperia Play didn't get ICS, gaming compatibility, JB won't change that, just adds to the problem of fragmentation.
Hardware/Software that's not supported in Vista wouldn't suddenly work in Windows 7.
Ending point is Google need to enforce some damn policies to stop the android fragmentation, I mean Sony launching phones in 2012 with GB is unforgivable.
Nah there we'l be no official jb for play...maybe other xperia phones but not the play so don't be getting your hopes up
Well. The devs of this forum managed to get touchpads to work properly on ics. So, I think that we should get an official update. If the dev's can make a stable rom with working touchpads, then sony can too! It will also perform a lot better on JB. We should make a petition!

I think it's a little rash to assume that because Sony use the word "all" they actually mean all of them. What are they supposed to say, "all but the Xperia Play?" Or maybe list out every single phone that they actually plan on still supporting? All they have to do is say, "Well, sorry guys, we tried, but we didn't guarantee that it would work in the first place."
Honestly, stop expecting/hoping Sony to support this phone in an official manner and support the people in the community that have already done much more than Sony was willing to.
Sony should have at least released a finished version of ICS to us devs here but no.... they were scared away by not as many games working on ICS..... Well guess what? It's My phone and I should decide if I want the upgrade. Not someone else. As for JB, they should have at least come out and said "no we won't upgrade X phones". It would get us mad but not mad upset and angry for taking our hopes away...
I think the xperia play, can have jelly beam because jelly beam has more fluid that ics
That magic word "ALL" is for all Sony phones. Play is SE so don't count.
My missis has Experia Arc and guess what no ICS there either bur Arc S has...
What Sony doesn't realize is, if this gets jb, or even ics, the sales will go WAY up! That means more game companies will update! And they can ALWAYS have a
"we cannot guarantee a solid gaming environment, or that pre owned games will continue to run on your xperia play. Clicking 'I accept' will continue the update."
I would update! All I care about is minecraft (which is still gonna update) and emulators!
Point is, Sony is being stupid. We need to tell them that we want a nice, clean update, and that the game makers will follow their suit. And even if they don't, others will MAKE MORE GAMES! The ONLY thing I want other than jelly bean in general is more app space.
I'm pretty sure Sony will come in for us. I'm running a JB Rom and all games work fine. Sony just needs to work harder. Also yes minecraft does update more frequently now so yes they would add support for 4.0+

Can't people just be happy that support for this phone has not been dropped (yet), instead of complaining about timescales for release of the promised updates?
I thought people on these forums are a little more in the know than most places and would realise that it's not a fast process to prepare, test and release an update that isn't completely broken/full of bugs.
I guess I was wrong lol.

Come on, you know this could be much much quicker of Sony would give this priority.
See what our XDA senior developers achieve in just a few weeks, days, hours...

The developers here do a fantastic job and I have massive respect for everything they do for the modding/Android community. Several devices of mine have had their useful lives extended greatly because of people on XDA.
However, they are not under the same constraints as the devs that work for Sony.
Sony's devs will be under strict developmental, testing and qa constraints and cannot release updates with bugs and rely on people providing bug reports/logcats to fix said bugs after the fact. They have to release software with all features working and with minimal bugs.
Not to mention all the red tape/paperwork they no doubt have to deal with and the other devices that all need maintaining. I would also imagine that the budget for maintaining older devices is dwarfed by the budget for new devices.
It's also worth noting that a lot of the devs good work on XDA is only possible because of blobs/binaries provided by Sony's devs in the first place.

Sony releases an update with a camera app that takes 4 sec to open and everyone loses sleep over it while some1 here releases an update with wifi issues, screen on delays etc, they get praise for the device bring up which gets labeled as 1st release. lol
Obviously Sony cant depend on rapid development and recoveries and backups and all the fancy stuff we do when we get into issues when it relates to the average android user who by the phone and occasionally plug it in for PC companion to update and that's it. When wifi stops working no one is gonna say " oh this is a first release. They will fix it soon". People take back the devices and swap brands like that. Consumers are a fickle bunch.
Also as I have always said to myself , AOSP is the most barebones and feature lacking kind of experience out there. Android has matured a lot since the froyo gingerbread days and so have the OEM modifications. The reason I decided on the XZ against the N4. I am one willing to sacrifice smoothness for functionality any day. My Z is still stock and I will probably keep it that way til the EOL is reached. I came from the LG O2x which got ICS in December/January so trust me when is say I can wait lol.

I agree, I think we all know they could have done this even 2 months ago. But do consider, they have to put in all bugs and make the OS laggy...you know how hard a job that is?

Like I said... They made money already. Why would they spend more?
You know how much its costing them to pay 1 second-grade developer and 4 trainees so they could have a running upgrade dept? $120 a day! Thats too much for them.
(sorry for the ranting sarcasm...moving on...)

There is nothing teased, it's just the news they put up.
Real question is, who cares?
I have seen no difference with kitkat and 4.2. apart from google now, now on the left. so I am not excited at all. The apptray needs the border removed on the Z, also camera improvements welcome.

Overall Performance seems better on KK. The difference between ART and dalvik is pretty big in some apps aswell. 4.3 brings trim.
The camera however ... Not so sure about that. I doubt they will even update the camera stuff. Why bother spending time and money optimizing an old flagships camera when people can just buy the New flagship with a camera that is advertised to be incredible? That's how a big company works. Time is money. Sad reality.
