Ok now before I start... I did search and all that but im still kinda confused. Ok so I got a droid x and I want to root it and install the jrummy rom. I got z4root but im confused on the boot strap and how to install and how it works.... im not new to rooting as I rooted my droid 1 and droid incredible in the past. All info is welcomed and thanks in advance.
The bootstrap allows you to take and restore backups. You can also use it to flash update.zip file for themes/roms/mods
If you google koush dro id x bootstrap and search around on the forums here u can probably find the answers you are looking for. If you have specific questions post back here and I will do my best to help out!
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I am by no means an expert at android. I was really into Windows Mobile until the last couple of months but was fed up with what MS did with Phone7 -so I just made the jump to android.
Root with Z4root first. then first thing create a back up so if something goes haywire - you are covered. I actually create 2 just in case.
To create your nandroid backup go to the android market and get Droid X Bootstrapper...
1. Open Droid X Bootstrapper.
2. Click "Bootstrap Recovery".
3. Get the "Success" message. Click "OK".
4. Click "Reboot Recovery".
5. Your phone will reboot into recovery (not the factory recovery -a hacked recovery).
6. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-backup and restore".
7. Use the red camera button to hit enter.
8. A new screen will open and your cursor will already be on "Backup".
9. Use the camera button to hit enter.
10. Your phone starts the backup process (black screen with a small open box and a little android). It takes about 5 minutes to complete the backup.
11. When it is done you will get a "Backup complete!" at the bottom and will it will automatically go back to the first page and your cursor will be highlighting the "-reboot system now" option.
12. Press the red camera button to hit "enter".
13. Your phone will reboot.
14. You have created your nandroid
If you dont have the app "Root Explorer" you need to give up the couple of bucks or whatever it is and get it. You can try some free file explorer apps and see how they work for you -but Root Explorer is worth the $ and I will refer to it in instructions.
Flashing the rom... I will use an example for this rom...
Apex 1.3
It is the rom I am using. It is stable and functional. It uses the ADW.Launcher as a home replacement for Blur.Home.apk -so if you are not familiar with it it takes some getting used to (a little complicated as far as all the settings). It also uses the AOSP text messaging which I do not like (but it can be changed back to Blur.
You can use whatever rom you want- but the instructions will not be exactly the same. Whatever rom you decide on -MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS NOT MINE! Usually the first post of the rom thread will contain pretty clear instructions.
START WITH A FULL BATTERY!! I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY BLAH BLAH BLAH...
For example from the above thread...
-Place file on your sdcard. Bootstrap recovery and reboot recovery
-Navigate to mounts and storage. FORMAT data, and cache
-Return to previous menu and install .zip from sd card
-Choose ApeX and install!
Click to collapse
1. Download the rom.
2. If you use rom manager to download -you will have to find the rom which will be in a .zip file and it will be in some weird place in your phone's SDCard like
/sdcard/clockworkmod/download/fabdroid.com/downloads/
so you will have to move it to the root of your sdcard (meaning not inside any file folder -just on the sdcard.
3. So if you dont want to deal with that you can download from your computer and then place on your sdcard.
4. Open "Droid X Bootstrapper".
Click "Bootstrap Recovery".
5. Get the "Success" message. Click "OK".
6. Click "Reboot Recovery".
7. Your phone will reboot into recovery.
6. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-mounts and storage".
7. Use the red camera button to hit enter.
8. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-format data".
9. Hit enter (camera button).
(From here I am working on memory as I do not want to physically reflash the rom - so the instructions will not be quite as 100%)
10. You will get a "Are you sure?" message.
11. Go down to it and hit enter.
12. The phone will take a moment to format the data.
13. Use the same process to "-format cache".
14. Use the back button (the physical hardware back button) to return to the previous screen.
15. Go down to "-install zip from sdcard"
16. Hit enter.
17. Now all the files on the root of your sdcard will be listed. It is crucial that you placed the rom file on the root of your sdcard so that you can now choose it from the list. If there is no file to choose -you just completely screwed up and will have to perform the sbf. So hopefully you don't do that.
18. Use the volume button to select the Apex rom.
19. Hit enter (the camera button). I can't remember if you get a warning here - if you do - of course you want to confirm.
20. The new rom will load up.
21. If it does not automatically reboot then "-reboot system now".
The first boot up will take longer than usual. You will have to set up your phone all over again. If you have set up your phone properly then all your apps will download from the market automatically. If you have not set up your phone to do that than you will have to manually find your apps and download them.
Hopefully you are using Google to store your contacts and not Backup Asistant and the regular phone contacts. If you are using Google then your contacts should automatically be added back. If not then you are on your own bc I don't mess with Backup Assistant.
That is the best I can do with out physically flashing the rom and...
EVERY ROM HAS ITS OWN SPECIFIC INTRUCTIONS
You can use this as a guide but make sure you do what the rom developer says.
He pretty much explained everything you need to know, LOL
I personally like Darkslide V4. It is a very sweet ROM, but try different ones out and see which one suits you best.
How to root and mod a Mytouch 32b without a data plan
This is the exact same phone that I had 32b HBOOT-1.33.0006 (SAPP30000)
I tried to root it and install several different root methods and several different roms. I never bricked the phone, but I did at one point have a phone that would go to the cyanogen bootsplash screen, then continually reboot.
The issue that I had was that I didn't have a data plan, and the mytouch is set up where the phone must register with google before it can be used. To get to the wifi screen, you first had to register with google, so without a data plan, the phone was worthless. To bypass the data plan, I put an old tmobile sim in the phone, went to the corporate store, told my tale of woe, and begged then to let me use a sim with a data plan so I could register with google. I actually had to do this twice because the first tome I rooted and modded the phone, I was stuck in a boot loop and I got scared, and reset the phone to factory. The phone would boot up, but when it got to the modded rom, it would always just reboot and reboot. I googled all over the place about all of these issuse, and decided to compile everything so that someone else could benefit, and if I forgot how I did it, years later I would have a reference. I also never formatted my sd card to fat32 because I did it before. It is a good idea to remove old files from the root of the SD card once you have finished flashing your phone.
This is the first step I did, and it worked perfectly.
[MT3G 32b] Root / Break perfect SPL / Way less steps from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=570659
I'm creating this thread in hopes no one who owns a MyTouch, in America, on T-Mobile with a perfected SPL doesn't have to go through the brain numbing process I've just adventured through over the past week.
Special thanks to Amon_RA and Radix999 who have compiled an impressive set of information on this topic. I would have been totally lost without their contributions to this forum.
Setup:
You'll need a brand-spanking-new MyTouch 3G, 1.6 updated, un-modded, perfected SPL [Mine was: HBOOT-1.33.0006 (SAPP30000)]. To find out if your SPL is perfected power your phone off: press the vol button down > hit the power button > compare the info listed in fastboot (white screen with three skateboarding Androids) to Amon_RA's list of SPL's. If you have done anything to your phone before attempting this process go consult someone who knows wtf they are doing. I don't, but I rather tell people how this went down for me.
How I Rooted my MT3G:
1. Get your phone back to 1.5 cupcake by whatever means necessary. I used these directions: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how...ur-mytouch-3g/ (see below they are copied for your convienience)

UPDATE: THIS NOW WORKS ON THE MYTOUCH 1.2 (THE MYTOUCH WITH THE 3.5MM HEADPHONE JACK AT THE TOP) AND THE OLD MYTOUCH AS WELL.
1. Download the correct .nbh file for your device and rename it to sappimg.nbh if necessary (make sure it is sappimg.nbh and NOT sappimg.nbh.nbh or anything else)
NBH File (Works for the Old MyTouch)
Zip File (Works for the new MyTouch w/ 3.5mm headphone jack) RENAME IT TO sappimg.zip (not sappimg.zip.zip, just sappimg and its a .zip file!) Thanks Caesar for sending this in!
2. Save the sappimg.nbh/sappimg.zip file to your SD card. As always, do not place it in any folder on the SD card, just on the SD card.
3. Put the SD card into the phone and turn the phone on by holding down Volume Down and Power.
4. Push the trackball down on that screen and wait for it to pick up the Sappimg.nbh.
5. Push the trackball to begin, it should automatically update from there.
6. Once the flashing is fully complete, reboot the phone. DONE!
Reported Issues
Issue: Phone says that the wrong Main Version is Older or Wrong Model ID…
Solution: Use our Goldcard Method instead.
2.Follow these steps to root your device: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how...-in-one-click/. When you are done with this process you should have Amon_RA's recovery and boot loader all setup. This will allow you to format your SD card to whatever file system you want, flash roms, do nandroid backups, the works.
Once your phone is reflashed with sappimg.nbh if you do not have a data plan, you will have to head to your nearest tmobile corporate store and beg to use a data sim. They are pretty nice, and will usually allow you to do it. Register your phone with google, then quickly go to market and install Astro File Manager, or Linda File Manager. If you do it right away with a tmobile data sim, that is the best. If you want to do it later on wifi, it is difficult. You might be able to do it right away as soon as you register with wifi because I managed to install one program that way. Shortly after you register with wifi, tmobile does something in your phone that prevents market from working. You get a download unsuccessful error over and over. I finally figured out you could take out the tmobile sim and replace it with a different sim, and the market would start working again, but it is a hassle, and you might not have a non tmobile sim handy.
I then proceeeded to the following proceedure

I. Read Before You Begin
1. You must downgrade back to cupcake first:
Get Back to Cupcake for Magic
After you have done the above procedure and are back on cupcake (Android 1.5), you can come back to this procedure and continue.
II. How to Check Your Motherboard Version
1. Turn off your phone
2. Turn the phone on by either holding down the volume down button and power button at the same time OR by holding down the back button and power button at the same time.
3. When the screen comes up, it should say somewhere on the first line either 32A or 32B. THAT is your motherboard version. Remember it…
4. Turn off and on the phone.
5. Goto Settings > Applications *> and make sure Unknown sources is checked ON.
III. Root the Magic
1.Â*Download this APK and the appropriate recovery image for your motherboard (32A or 32B) and save it to your computer:
FlashRec.apk (Updated: 09/26/09)
Amon Ra’s Recovery Image (32B)(Updated 11.18.09)
Amon Ra’s Recovery Image (32A)(Updated 11.18.09)
2. Once they are saved to your computer, copy them both to your SD card (do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them on the SD card itself).
3. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
4. Goto the Market and download Linda File Manager or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
5. Open the file manager and goto SDCard and then find the FlashRec apk file and click it. If asked tell it to use Package Installer to open it.Â*It should automatically install the apk.
6. Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
7 (FOR 32A ONLY) Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
/sdcard/recovery-RAv1.6.2H.img
7 (FOR 32B ONLY) Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
/sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2G.img
8. Then click on the Flash Custom RecoveryImage button and wait for it to finish.
9. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on (keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background). So long as that screen comes up, you have done it correctly and can now go on to the*How to Load a ROM video for your appropriate device!
10. To get Root access you MUST go to the next video mentioned above and load a custom ROM.
Reported Issues
Issue: I get Invalid Recovery Image when using the FlashRec program.
Solution: Make sure that the spell correction and auto completion are OFF in the Text Settings (Settings > Locale and Text > Touch Input > Text Input then turn off Prediction, spell correction, and word completion) of your phone. If not then it may put in spaces where they do not belong. (I had it put a space after .img and couldn’t see it so couldn’t figure out why it kept saying invalid recovery image, like you guys).
Other than that, just make sure it is on the root of the SD card (not in any folder) and that you are typing in the recovery name and filepath correctly.
Then and it should show Flash Recovery Image.
Issue: When I download the FlashRec.apk it shows up as a .zip not an apk.
Solution: No problem. Do NOT extract it, just simply replace the .zip with .apk and then proceed with the procedure.
Issue: I get backup failed or flash failed when I try to use the FlashRec progam.
Solution: This is most likely because you already have a custom recovery image, please use one of the unrooting procedures to get back to the original recovery image and THEN you can use this procedure.
Also, instead of doing that, if you have root access, you can just put the recovery image on your SD card then go into Terminal (download it from the Market if you don’t already have it) and type:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.2.3.img
3.
3. Go to Amon_RA's thread about SPL's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019
and download a Engineering SPL for your phone. (Engineering SPL 1.33.2004 by Crios worked for me)
4. Edit the SPL file name to "update.zip"
5. Load the SPL to the root of your SD card.
6. Load up RA's boot loader. (Power + Home)
7. Wipe / Clear from the boot loader menu.
8. Apply update.zip from the boot loader menu.
9. Wait for the phone to reboot, all kinds of whacky **** will happen, don't mess with the device, etc. Eventually you should reboot into recovery mode. Whatever you do - figure out how to get to recovery mode.
10. Wipe / Clear from the boot loader menu.
11. Format the SD VIA boot loader.
12. Load a new / favorite ROM onto the SD. (I use Blueberry Hero)
13. Install the Rom VIA boot loader.
14. Crack open a beer.
No gold card, fastbook, no crazy 40 step process. There may be some security issues or something involved with this process. Whatever the case, whatever the politics are between XDA/unlockr - this WORKED for me from a STOCK 1.6 device.
With a little bit of reading you should either have turned your phone into a 400$ brick or a happy little Hero pumping Android phone.
Cheers.
I backed up whatever was on my SD card, and then did this proceedure without the SuperWipe.conf step.
[WIPE][COMPLETE][FLASHABLE] SuperWipe v2 (30 Jan 2011) - So Fresh and So Clean Clean! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834812
One thing we have run into with BiffMod ROM is that there is no single "COMPLETELY erase the phone" solution.
So this is my attempt at it.... No console/terminal, no adb shell, no USB, no anything required. Just flash the file in recovery and you are done.
But OHSAKA! There are tons of threads about this, there are even existing "wipe-update" files to erase the phone. What makes your flashable update file so special???
Well I'm glad you asked that. This update contains the 'erase_image' executable with all the needed libraries statically linked. (thanks ezterry) 'erase_image' performs a low-level format of the partition which can fix unforeseen problems. Most other wipe-updates just perform "rm -rf *" at the file system level and don't touch the boot partition.
v2

Kudos to RichieDaze! He stepped up and added some often requested functionality to this popular wipe script. Now SuperWipe will check the root of the /sdcard/ directory for a file named "SuperWipe.conf". This file will control which partitions get erased and also control if the script triggers an auto-reboot. If the file is not present, then the script will default to wiping all partitions.
SuperWipe.conf
Code:
## SuperWipe Custom Configuration
## So Fresh and So Clean Clean Menu
## Cannot be blank (yes or No)

Wipe_Cache=yes
Wipe_Userdata=yes
Wipe_System=yes
Wipe_Boot=yes
Wipe_Sd_Secure=yes

SuperWipe.conf (MD5: 1e7eb3a97270142aa6bf7c4fca9c2490)
You will need to reboot back into recovery after running this. If you forget and try to boot normally, you will have to pull battery to power off.
v1
---
This update will:
1) Call erase_image on CACHE, SYSTEM, USERDATA, and BOOT partitions
2) Mount /sd-ext (if it exists) and delete all files from it
3) Delete all files in the /sdcard/.android_secure directory which is where all the froyo apps2sd files live
4) Run e2fsck (file system repair) on the your ext partition
5) Log all output to the /tmp/wipe.log file (if you care)
I think this is the most complete way to wipe a phone. It supersedes 'fastboot erase system -w', VOL_DOWN+HOME+BACK, Amon_RA wipes, or various other flashable update-wipe zips.
I have tested this file the best I can on my phone. I verified all partitions are completely empty after running it. Any suggestions or bug reports are welcome!
SuperWipe (MD5: 945218bbbeab63d2c41e20c3243176ce)
You will need to power off and reboot back into recovery after running this. If you forget and try to boot normally, you will have to pull battery to power off.
I then went with this modded rom. It works pretty well.
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...tom-rom-for-gsm-hero-now-with-online-kitchen/
I'm pleased to present my MoDaCo Custom Hero ROM! No 'wipe' is required for anyone coming from MCR 1.2 onwards, or the stock 2.73.x updates.
You can now create a customised ROM containing only the parts you required - click here to read more about the MoDaCo Custom Custom ROM online kitchen!
MCR now includes a MoDaCo Custom Kernel modified by Teknologist, TCK, for additional features.
MCR now optionally includes Wavesecure in ROM, allowing you to lock / locate / wipe your device remotely in the event of loss and be notified if the SIM is changed. The application cannot be uninstalled by a thief and we we have actively worked with Wavesecure to ensure that your settings will survive a hard reset!
This ROM is based on the 2.73.x release series (currently 2.73.771.73 together with my own optimisations) for the best possible performance! The ROM is now available in 2 core versions, with and without Chinese input, with optional add on packs that can be applied to either ROM.
Included in the 'core' version
- Built with my new MCR build process which reduces size and boost speed of the ROM
- Includes Teknologist's Custom Kernel 1.91 featuring additional filesystem support (EXT4, NFS, CramFS, SquashFS 4.0), CompCache modules and config, DroidWall support and much more! See here for details.
- Rooted with 'adb remount' permission and superuser APK
- A2SD included (fully automatic - thanks cyanogen!) - create a EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 partition as your second partition to use. dalvik-cache remains on device.
- Added Jbed Java
- Added Google Voice Search and required speech library
- Added Dropbear SSH server running by default, check 'About' screen for password (port 2222). You can now remove this by running /system/bin/removedropbear.sh
- Added Notes app from Dragon ROM
- Added Spare Parts (run it and switch the 2 animation types to 'fast' for an even better experience!)
- Added android-wifi-tether 1.60 pre3 (props to the developer, this is a great app!)
- Added WiFi Status indicator, with kind permission of Andrew Schwimmer
- Added busybox 1.15.3 with Droid Explorer support
- Added Titanium Backup
- Added all 4 available HTC widgets
- Added nano 2.09 - text editor for use in shell mode
- Added parted and sqlite tools
- Added terminfo and settings to boot.img to allow nano etc. use
- Added files required for Debian linux including loxley's updated bootdeb script
- Added huge APN list
- Moved Quickoffice to data partition to allow easy uninstall
- Deleted 'Learn More' application
- ROM now includes touch focus in Camera app
- ROM now supports shortcuts using BetterCut (and therefore I assume anycut!) in Rosie
- Silenced boot sound (it's still there and can be reactivated with a file edit)
- You can now check your MoDaCo Custom ROM (MCR) version from the about menu
Included in main 'enhanced' add on pack
- Added Business Card Scanner
- Added 'Plurk' client (currently unavailable)
- Added WAP browser
Other optional add on packs (apply as normal update zips)
- 'WaveSecure' add on pack (puts Wavesecure in ROM - it is no longer in core)
- 'Boot Sounds' add on pack (restores boot sounds)
- 'Hebrew Fonts' add on pack (installs hebrew fonts)
Recommended applications (available from the market)
- More Locale for setting non english Locales
Downloads
This ROM is also available customised to your exact requirements in the MoDaCo Custom Custom ROM online kitchen in the second post of this topic - check it out!
'Core': DOWNLOAD (Mediafire Pro) - MD5: d767e7335a4bb6ef022e7d3082f28bb7
'Enhanced' add on pack: DOWNLOAD (Mediafire Pro)
'Wavesecure' add on pack: http://www.wavesecure.com/installations/update.zip
'Boot Sounds' add on pack: DOWNLOAD (Mediafire Pro)
'Hebrew Fonts' add on pack: DOWNLOAD (Mediafire Pro)
ENSURE YOU DO A NANDROID BACKUP SO YOU CAN 'ROLL BACK' IF REQUIRED!
A 'wipe' is MANDATORY when installing this ROM if you are coming from pre MCR 1.2 or a stock 1.x ROM, and you MUST do this BEFORE applying the update zip (as the update zip puts files on the data partition)! I also recommend you install the latest radio from my 'update zips' topic if you have not done so.
Please note that first boot may take a little while, especially if you have a lot of apps on your A2SD partition. Be patient! If you want a real clean start or you have issues with your existing A2SD installed apps when you boot, you need to wipe your EXT3 partition on SD too by executing 'adb shell rm -r /system/sd/app', 'adb shell rm -r /system/sd/app-private' and 'adb shell reboot'
The ROM is in an update.zip format for installation via the custom recovery image, I also strongly recommend installing the latest radio (63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29 at time of writing). As always, do a Nandroid backup before you do anything... just in case!
For the complete newbies, these are the steps you need to take with a 'virgin' Hero:
- Download the patched recovery image linked above and install as detailed in that post
- Download this custom ROM, and copy it to your SD card
- Enter the recovery image (if you're not in it already) by powering on while pressing 'home'
- Select 'nandroid backup' from the menu to do a backup
- If you copied the custom rom as update.zip, select 'apply sdcard:update.zip', else select the option below.
- all done
If you would like to remove parts of the ROM that you do not use, see this post.
Feedback / feature requests welcome!
Finally, if you would like to show your appreciation for the ROM, please consider supporting MoDaCo by signing up for a MoDaCo Ad Free or MoDaCo Plus account, both of which also give you early access to Beta ROM releases and access to the the online kitchens.
flashrec.apk
here is the flashrec.apk file I used. I had a hard time finding it on the net, the website was down
Honestly, this method is much easier... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121776
That method might be easier, but I was having trouble getting the SDK installed on my machine. I wanted to do everything from the phone, and I needed detailed step by step instructions.
Thanks for the help.

CWM installed well from recovery.
But CWM did not install root.zip!
Error message:
CWM Recovery v5.8.1.5
E: Can't mount /sdcard/
What could have gone wrong? What further details are needed to find a remedy? What else is needed to root successfully?
Updates:
I have found solutions after reading all posts related.
If you have just PC Odin an unrooted SGT 6800 into ICS, your SGT now cannot be rooted. What I have done thereafter is as follows:
1. PC Odin CWM 5.5.0.4 into my 6800;
2. set-up your 6800 into recovery mode ( press power & vol-up same times, release power button once your see active screen, then release vol-up button as well, you will be in CWM recovery mode;
3. goto zip from sdcard; toggle signature verification & script asserts to disable;
4. then choose zip from internal sdcard; from there you should choose root.zip ( this root.zip was saved into your external sdcard in advance.)
5. Once done, choose reboot.
Now you new ICS is rooted.
Which zip and which sdcard, that is the question.
Hi ronnieho,
thanks for your quick response and help. I am sure you will get me running. Please give me some more details which due to my lack of experience I feel to be missing.
Please let me explain this, then you will know which details still trouble me:
Last week I managed to root my ICS SGS2 following these instructions:
http://www.pocketpc.ch/samsung-gala...-stock-ics-firmware-ohne-flashen-kernels.html
It is in german, but based on the original thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
The german instruction was very specific about which zip to put into which (internal or external) sdcard.
The english XDA instructions are not that specific about these obviously very important details.
Would you please add these details to your instructions:
1. PC Odin CWM 5.5.0.4 into my 6800;
Does this mean, place CWM.zip into the external sdcard (i.e. /sdcard/extStorages/SdCard) of the 6800?
From the threads refered to in my first post I have CWM 5.8.1.5. May this work too? Or must it be CWM 5.5.0.4? Where can I get CWM 5.5.0.4?
2. set-up your 6800 into recovery mode ( press power & vol-up same times, release power button once your see active screen, then release vol-up button as well, you will be in CWM recovery mode;
Yes, this is how I get into recovery mode.
3. goto zip from sdcard; toggle signature verification & script asserts to disable;
goto _which_ zip from _which_ sdcard.
Rooting my SGS2 I used
- install zip from sdcard
Here _sdcard_ meant the external sdcard
And _zip_ meant CWM.zip.
Is this also true for your instruction step 3?
toggle signature verification & script asserts to disable;
Where/to what item should I apply these instructions?
4. then choose zip from internal sdcard; from there you should choose root.zip ( this root.zip was saved into your external sdcard in advance.)
So far I did not save any zip to the internal sdcard?
Should I have saved root.zip into the internal sdcard in step 1?
Which root.zip? Remember, I have CWM.zip and root.zip from the Attached Files of posting #213 by kable in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454112&page=22
Can I use these files or should I download different zip-files? From where?
Sure, I could simply try out my questions, but I am afraid to brick my Tab.
Another important detail may be that I did not use Odin to copy the zip files to the tap. In my successful rooting of the SGS2 I simply used the USB MTP connection and copied the zip-files like I copy video and audio files, and it worked. I would prefer to keep this copy practice also regarding the Tab7.7. Or must I copy with Odin? Why? Do I miss something if I copy in MTP mode? Does Odin do a different copy? Does Odin copy to different/specific sdcard locations?
I am confident that using your instruction will make the difference. Please give me the details which I feel to be missing.
Thanks!
Took the risk - Success, at last!
Since I did not get any more helpful answers, I had to reconsider the situation. Finally I decided to take the risk by using a best of
a) the xda-developers [GUIDE] Root (Updated for ICS)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454112
, e.g. postings #1 by Jade Eyed Wolf, #213 by kable, #227 by ronnieho, #230 by mashkuov, etc.
b) aljee77 guide for the SGS2
http://www.pocketpc.ch/samsung-gala...-stock-ics-firmware-ohne-flashen-kernels.html
Trusting that the xda-developers zip-files, CWM.zip and root.zip, will be ok for the Tab7.7
and hoping that the aljee77 procedure will also work as well for my Tab7.7 as it has worked for my SGS2,
I took the risk and finally succeeded to root my Tab7.7.
My successful procedure (Thanks to aljee77 and mashkuov):
1. Data preparation (zip-files)
1.1 Downloaded CWM.zip and root.zip to my computer from mashkuov, post #230 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454112&page=23
1.2 Copy these zip files from my computer to respective sdcard in my tab.
I have the Samsung Kies drivers installed on my computer. But I do not use Odin. I connect the tab and the computer with the USB data cable and simply use the USB MTP connection. I simply copy the zip-files like I would copy video and audio files by simple Windows Explorer file-drag/drop between the the source/target location icons.
1.3 I copy CWM.zip into my _external_ SDCARD
(on the computer: GT-P6800/Card
on the tab: /sdcard/extStorages/SdCard)
1.4 I copy root.zip into my _internal_ SDCARD ( /sdcard/ ) <--- aljee77 procedure <--- :good:
(on the computer: GT-P6800/Tablet
on the tab: /sdcard/)
2. Temporary installation of CWM Recovery:
- Reboot to recovery:
2.1 Download and install LATEST SAMSUNG KIES (or stand-alone USB drivers if you can find them)
2.2 Transfer CWM.zip to the EXTERNAL CARD on Galaxy Tab 7.7 (already done in step 1.3)
2.3 Turn off the Galaxy Tab 7.7
2.4 Enter Recovery
- Hold Volume UP button + Power Button
- When TAB turns ON, RELEASE POWER BUTTON (Keep Holding Volume UP Button)
* Will Enter Recovery
2.5 In the following basic menu use Volume Up/Down to navigate and Power OFF to select/accept options!
- Choose apply update from external storage.
- Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appears.
* Now a temporary CWM is installed and activated.
* This CWM recovery is only a _temporary_ CWM and will be gone after reboot!
* see #217 by vegaman: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28300775&postcount=217
3. Install root
* Once the CWM recovery appears:
* _Touch-screen_ to navigate and to choose an option!
- install zip from sdcard (1st CWM menu)
- choose zip from internal sdcard (2nd CWM menu) <--- aljee77 procedure <--- :good:
- toggle signature verification & script asserts to disable <--- ronnieho #227 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454112&page=22
- +++ GO BACK ++++ (from 2nd to 1st CWM menu)
- reboot system now (1st CWM menu)
* After reboot your tab will be rooted and temporary CWM will be gone.
4. Enjoy!
Now the tab is rooted! Temporary CWM is gone.
Now you can download Superuser App and Superuser Elite App (both by ChainsDD) from the market.
5. If you want a permanent CWM see #220 by Handymeister: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28319010&postcount=220
- after installing temporary CWM I flashed the root.zip with it.
- then reboot
- with root I flashed the CWM with Mobile Odin and that works fine and is now resistant again

Unlocking The Bootloader And Obtaining Root
*This part of the tutorial is geared towards Windows users. The MAC instructions are very similar, from what I understand. Install the package the same way. All ADB/Fastboot commands may need to start with "adb-mac" (no quotes) rather than "adb" (no quotes). Due to the vast amount of Linux distros available; instructions will vary for your device. Once ADB/Fastboot are set up all command will begin with "./adb" (no quotes) rather than "adb" (no quotes). Once ADB/Fastboot are set up; this guide is relevant to everyone.*
Time required:
20-40 minutes.
Setting up ADB for our device:
Download the AndroidSDK onto your computer.
Note: Google changes their mind every other week as to if this will be distributed as a .zip or an .exe. If you get an .zip file, simply extract the contents to your C:\ drive. For an .exe install it like you would any other program, but set the path directly to the C:\ drive when the installer asks.
Or...you can use this page to download the "ADB for Dummies AIO App."
This will automatically install ADB for you to your C:\ directory. It's very very simple this way.
If your platform-tools folder doesn't have a fastboot.exe, place this fastboot.exe file in your C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools (or possibly simply called tools, if you set up ADB ages ago) folder.
Now you have ADB installed! Congratulations.
Unlocking the Bootloader:
***NOTE***
This will perform a factory reset on your device. You will lose all applications. Even the data on your SD Card! I'd recommend making a Backup to your computer BEFORE performing this. There is a method for backing your data up, detailed HERE.
For the time being, there is a method available that will allow you to unlock your device (and root it) without losing your data.
For instructions, click HERE. Please note: this is a hack and isn't the "conventional" and "accepted" way of unlocking your bootloader on a nexus device. The wipe requirement is there for your safety, really, and I'm certain this will be patched in the upcoming releases.
Get the drivers:
Uninstall any previously attempted drivers if they don't work and move to the next.
Option One:
Navigate to the "Device Manager" (Control Panel > Device Manager) in Windows and Select the android device. Open the properties and select the "Install Driver" option. Pick the driver with "Install from disk." Ignore any warnings about the driver not being signed properly.
PDAnet's drivers may work if the above options don't. Simply install PDAnet (after uninstalling any previous attempted driver installations) to get the drivers.
While that is downloading, on your Nexus 4: turn USB debugging on.
To do so; you must first go to Settings>About>Build Number and click seven times.
The actual setting can then be found in Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging
Once the drivers are installed, navigate to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder on your computer.
Hold shift and right click. Select "Open Command Window Here."
Plug your phone into the computer. Now in this command window type:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
(Hit Enter)
Your phone should now boot into a screen with a green android with his chest exposed.
Type this:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
(Hit Enter)
If your Command Prompt displays the message "waiting for device" your driver wasn't successfully installed.
Close the Command Prompt window and open Device manager while your phone is still plugged in. (Search for it using the search option).
Right Click the "Android" option and select Update Driver. Choose to "Browse My Computer" and "Let Me Pick From A List." Pick the Driver with the newest date and install it. Now retry the code above.
Your phone will ask if you want to unlock it. Select "Yes" by using the volume keys and use power to select it.
Now, navigate to "Recovery Mode" with the volume keys. Use power to select.
A screen with another Android will pop up. Press Volume Up and Power at the same time.
Select Factory Reset. This process may take a few minutes. Be patient and let it work.
Once finished, select "Reboot."
Your phone is now unlocked!
Obtaining Root Access and Custom Recovery:
Turn on USB Debugging.
To do so; you must first go to Settings>About>Build Number and click seven times.
The actual setting can then be found in Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging
Download the following:
SuperSU (CWM .zip)
CWM (Pick the version for your device)
Place the recovery-clockwork-VERSIONNUMBER-mako.img file into your C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.
Put the SuperSU.zip on your phone.
Open another Command Prompt if it isn't still open. (Navigate to C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools and shift + right click. Select "Open Command Window Here.")
With your phone plugged in type:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
(Hit Enter)
And wait for your phone to boot into the android again.
Now type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery IMAGENAME.img
(Change the file name to the correct file name and Hit Enter)
Once that is finished: select the "Recovery Mode" option again on your phone.
You should get a new recovery menu here. Select "install zip from sd card" and "choose zip from sd card."
Find the SuperSU.zip that you transferred earlier and select "Yes" to installing.
Navigate back to "Reboot" and reboot your phone.
You're now rooted!
However, ClockworkMod Recovery won't continue to load after this.
To fix this, find "Rom Manager" from the market. (The free version is fine.) Use the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" option.
If your recovery still doesn't stick around after a reboot, you have another couple options. Find a file explorer that allows root access, such as Root Explorer. Use this program to rename /system/etc/install-recovery.sh to /system/etc/install-recovery.bak. You'll need to mount the system as r/w to do this. Root Explorer provides a button at the top to do so.
Or, you can do this completely manually by firing up ADB again and running a few commands:
Code:
adb shell
(Hit Enter)
Code:
su
(Hit Enter)
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
(Hit Enter)
Code:
mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.bak
(Hit Enter)
Congratulations!
Your phone is now unlocked, rooted, and has a custom recovery!
Continue reading the next posts for info on getting custom roms, kernels, tweaks, and more!
***I take no responsibility for what happens to your phone due to following this guide! That being said, not only am I sure you'll be fine...but there are an endless amount of users who would be glad to help if you need it.***
Thanks:

VanillaTbone, for the ADB AIO app.
Efrant, for posting about a bootloader locking utility without USB.
ClockworkMod team, for being a part of making our phones as awesome as they are.
The assorted developers, who continue to push out amazing material for us to use.
The awesome community, for endlessly supporting both Android itself and its users.
Installing Custom Roms Kernels and Tweaks
All of the instructions below require your bootloader to be unlocked. Please follow the guide above and return here when you're done.
Backing Your Files Up:
Time required:
15-25 minutes.
Making a Nandroid
The first thing you're going to want to do is back up your phone's entire system. This is done by making a "nandroid."
To do this, boot into ClockworkMod Recovery. To accomplish this: Turn your phone off. Once it is completely off: hold both volume buttons and the power button until the Android with his chest exposed is displayed. Navigate to the "Recovery Mode" option and select "backup."
This will take some time. Be patient and let it finish. This process is important! You should always have a recent nandroid available on your device.
Backing Your Data Up
Install Titanium Backup from the market.
Open Titanium Backup. A Superuser request should pop up. Allow it. Note: if Titanium Backup then says it failed to obtain root access; press the menu button and select more>reload application.
Press menu>batch. Select "Backup all User Apps." Select all and "Run the Batch Operation."
Let the process complete. This may take quite some time: depending on how many applications you have installed.
You can now backup your Text Messages, Bookmarks, and WiFi addresses with Titanium Backup as well.
Press Menu>Backup Data To XML to do so.
Backing Your Contacts Up
Note: This process may or not be useful to you. The Google servers should automatically import any contacts you have stored back whenever you install a new rom. Also note that Facebook/Google+/etc contacts will need to be synced again through their respective applications.
Open the Contacts application.
Press the Menu button.
Select import/export.
Export to storage.
Installing A Rom (Or Kernel/Radios/Tweaks/Themes/etc.)
Time Required:
5-10 minutes.
Note:
Follow the guide above about backing your phone up before attempting!
This guide will also work for flashing kernels/radios/themes/tweaks/etc. Simply ignore the part about wiping data and wipe whatever the thread says you should. You only need to restore data after a rom install.
Find a Rom You'd Like To Try:
Nexus 4 Original Development
Nexus 4 Development
Download the rom you'd like to try on your device.
Most roms also require you to install "gapps" as well.
You can find the correct ones for the rom you're using in the rom thread.
Make sure the Rom and Gapps are on your SD card.
Now, open Google Wallet (if you have it installed) and press Options>Settings>Reset Google Wallet. This will prevent the "Secure Element" errors some users have experienced.
Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery by turning your device completely off. Hold volume up, volume down, and power until the green Android with the open chest is displayed. Navigate to "Recovery Mode" with the volume buttons and select using the power button.
Remember to have a recent nandroid before continuing!
Navigate to "wipe data/factory reset" and select it. Select "yes."
Wait for the process to complete. This may take some time. Be patient!
Once complete: Navigate to "Install Zip from SD card" and "Choose zip from SD card."
Find the rom's .zip and install it. Once that completes install any applicable gapps' .zip.
Select the "Reboot" option.
Congratulations! Your phone should now boot into the custom rom!
Follow the prompts to re-activate your phone.
Restoring Your Applications / Contacts / Nandroid
Time Required:
5-15 minutes.
Restoring Your Applicaions
Install Titanium Backup. Note: you may want the pro key. If you have it, you won't have to manually click "install" on each application. The process is completely automated. Open Titanium Backup (grant root access. If titanium says it failed to obtain root access, press menu>more>reload application). Press menu>batch>restore missing apps with data. Now, here you have a choice to make. Do you want a completely clean install? Select "app only" and run the batch operation (Deselect Google Wallet first. We don't want to risk restoring wallet in any way. Install it manually through the Play Store.). Do you want all of your application data (saved games/settings/etc)? Select "app+data" and run the batch operation (Deselect Google Wallet first. We don't want to risk restoring wallet in any way. Install it manually through the Play Store.). This MAY cause you problems or it may not. Personally, I often restore application data and seldom run into any trouble. If you do find that restoring data caused problems, follow the guide above to re-install your rom and restore without data. This process will take some time. Be patient (I'd suggest turning your screen off so the screen doesn't burn, but that's just me.) It will vibrate upon completion.
You can now restore your Text Messages, Bookmarks, and WiFi addresses if you backed them up by pressing Menu>Restore Data From XML.
Note:
Overclocking/CPU tweaking applications should never be restored with data. Simply deselect it from the list.
Facebook/Haxsync/Google+ may have problems restoring your contacts when installed through Titanium Backup. Simply uninstall and reinstall through the market (and be sure to log in and select to sync your contacts again).
Also, if you have NFC Task Launcher successfully launching Tasker tasks with your stickers: they may not immediately work.
Through my testing, it's as simple to fix as uninstalling NFC Task Launcher and Tasker. Restore Tasker first. Then restore NFC task launcher.
Restoring Your Contacts
If google fails to restore your contacts (not facebook/haxsync/google+/etc) you may import them manually if you backed them up.
Open the contacts application and press menu>import/export>import from storage.
Restoring A Nandroid
If your phone is acting funny or won't boot...restore a nandroid from a previous rom or working set-up.
You may also use a Nandroid to switch back to a previous rom if you decide you don't like the one you're on.
Do this by booting into ClockworkMod Recovery (hold volume up, volume down, and power while your phone is off and navigate to "Recovery Mode").
Simply select "restore" and find the most recent (or relevant) backup.
This process will take some time. Be patient and let it complete! Once done, select "Reboot."
Note:
Nandroids are stored in the "clockworkmod" folder on your SD card. They take up quite a bit of space. ALWAYS have at least one recent one on your SD card. However, since these are huge files: you may like to delete old ones to save space. You must delete backups by booting into CWM and navigating to Backup and Restore>Delete.
Important Notes About Restoration
I outline the method of using Titanium Backup above for a reason. Restoring system applications and data is the most common cause of problems on custom roms. For this reason, always ONLY restore "missing applications" from "user applications" that were backed up when restoring onto a new rom. Every time you restore system data or applications a narwhal sodomizes your favorite childhood cartoon. This is FACT.
Installing Alternate Custom Recoveries
If you find a custom recovery (such as the touch-recovery options) that came as a .img file:
Use these instructions to flash. Plug your phone into the computer. Open up ADB. Move the .img to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.
Type the following:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
(Hit Enter)
You can also manually boot to the bootloader by powering off and holding volume down, volume up, power buttons until the green Android with his chest exposed is displayed.
Then type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery FILENAME.img
(Replace the file name with whatever the .img is called and Hit Enter).
Wait for the process to complete and reboot.
***I take no responsibility for what happens to your phone due to following this guide! That being said, not only am I sure you'll be fine...but there are an endless amount of users who would be glad to help if you need it.***
Panic Section! (Something is Wrong)
Q: My phone won't boot!
A: The easiest option is to get into recovery and restore a nandroid using the above guide (pull battery to put phone in an off-state if needed).
However, more advanced options are available if you don't have a nandroid available (You're naughty).
Do you have another rom .zip available on your SD card? If so, simply use the above guide for installing a rom to get you booting again.
If not, you can download one on your PC. Boot into fastboot (the green Android with open chest menu). Navigate to recovery and select it with the power button.
Move the .zip to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder.
Open ADB.
Change the NAMEOFZIP.zip below to the correct file name...and perform the action.
Code:
adb push NAMEOFZIP.zip /sdcard/NAMEOFZIP.zip
(Hit enter)
You may have to reboot recovery to get the file to show up. Now follow the guide above for flashing a rom to get you booting again.
Did you install a tweak that modified only a file or two on your phone? (Find this out by opening the .zip and looking in the folders (ignore META-INF). Good news! We MAY be able to recover you completely. If this doesn't work...you'll have to follow another method.
Get your phone into fastboot (the boot-menu that allows you to select recovery/reboot/etc). Navigate to Recovery. Start up ADB. Pull the files that were modified out of the stock rom's .zip (using whatever tweak you were installing as reference to find what was changed) that you're on into the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder. Now we're going to push these files onto your phone...replacing the tweaked ones and hopefully getting you booted again. Use this code, but change the values of the file name and where it should reside. This is only an example!
Code:
adb shell
(Hit Enter)
Code:
su
(Hit Enter)
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
(Hit Enter)
This will mount your system so you can write to it.
Code:
exit
(Hit Enter)
This should exit shell and allow the use of adb commands again. You may need to type it a couple of times (until the #_ changes back to the platform_tools> prompt).
Code:
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
(Press enter after each file that you need to replace).
Note: This last option probably won't work. I'd just skip over it unless you're absolutely adamant about restoring your current setup and want to try everything possible.
Q: I want my SDcard files from my phone...but I'm in a situation where I need to flash stock images! This will erase my SD content. What can I do to save it?
A: Do you have a custom recovery installed? If not, download a custom recovery from post one in this guide and flash it using those instructions. You'll need to be in a custom recovery in order to obtain ADB access without booting your phone. Boot into recovery (With phone turned off: hold Power and Volume+ and Volume- until the bootloader pops up and navigate to "Recovery"). Run the command:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/ /SDCARD/
(Hit Enter)
This will put all of your files into a folder called "SDCARD" in your C:\ drive. Keep in mind that this will take a LONG time. Maybe a couple of hours.
To restore once you're booting again:
Move the "SDCARD" folder you created from your C:\ drive to the platform-tools folder. *Then input:
Code:
adb push SDCARD /sdcard/
(Hit Enter)
Q: How do I make an "ADB Backup?"
A: An ADB Backup will backup your phones data (applications and their settings). Follow the guide HERE about ADB Backups.
Q: My phone gets really sluggish and often turns off or reboots on its own.
A: Without knowing anything about your situation...I'd say you either have severely bad data somewhere or some bad kernel tweaks. Use the rom install guide above, paying close attention to the part about backing up and restoring if you haven't already. In the case of a kernel problem, you're likely undervolting too low. Restore the stock kernel values and see if your problems subside.
Q: My phone screen won't turn on! This requires a battery pull to fix.
A: This is called a "Black Screen of Death" or BSOD. This is generally due to using a hotplug governor (one that turns cores off with the screen off) or possibly undervolting your device too low. Change governors or up your slots a bit.
Q: My phone is doing really weird things. Regardless of kernel/rom and even if I don't restore any data at all! Either that or I simply cannot boot up! My phone is possessed no matter what I do!
Download the stock IMAGES for your device and extract the files using 7-zip. Move all of the extracted files to your platform-tools folder. Open the flash-all.sh file with a text editor. Copy and paste the commands (one by one) and wait for each process to complete for continuing.
FAQ
Roms/Kernels
Q: What is the best rom?
A: The "best" rom is a matter of opinion. Do you like a certain customization and can't live without it? Use a rom that has that option.
Q: What is the best rom for battery life?
A: Roms themselves really shouldn't impact your battery all that much. They can have an impact, but if you're really looking for better battery I'd suggest swapping kernels or tweaking yours.
Q: What is the best rom for stability?
A: All of the roms out are "stable." They may have options that don't work correctly, but generally: this is user error. If you follow my advice on installing a rom, you'll end up with MUCH fewer bugs.
Q: What is the best kernel?
A: The best kernel is a matter of opinion. Some users may love one, while others swear by another. Find one you like and tweak it accordingly.
Q: How do I tweak a kernel for better battery?
A: Generally, you'll want to either change your governor and or undervolt and or underclock your kernel. This is done either by using SetCPU or similar apps, or with an option in your rom (usually labeled "performance" or something similar). Take note: extremely high/low voltages may cause instability. Never "set at boot" until you've thoroughly tested the options you've set. Testing includes low strain (like turning your screen off for an hour) and high strain (like playing a game for an hour) scenarios. To be extra safe: run the values for a couple days before setting them at boot. Follow the users ideas in the kernel's threads for some guidelines. However, remember that not all values will play nicely with all phones.
Miscellaneous
Q: Why isn't Google Wallet working at [store]?
A: I'm not sure if it's a Google Wallet problem, or a problem with the terminal. But I personally struggle to find a terminal that consistently works in my area. Something that has generally worked for me is to open wallet and go to Options>Reset Google Wallet. You must then re-add any cards you had.
Q: Does my ass look good in these shorts?
A: Yes.
Neat Ideas / How to Show Off the Nexus 4
-Get some NFC stickers. Tagstand has them available.
You can use these to make your phone perform certain tasks when you touch the sticker. Use NFC Task Launcher to define the tasks. These are capable of doing simple things like muting your volume to the more complex like turning on Tasker tasks that do things like auto-reply to text messages while you're at work.

ADB Backups:
SDcard backup:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/ /sdcard/
(This will pull all of your sdcard contents to an "sdcard" folder in your C:\ directory)
Applications and their data:
Take note, that you'll need to be using CyanogenMod's method for setting up ADB to do this. The ADB AIO application installs an older SDK without this functionality. First, get your drivers installed (detailed in post one). Once you get ADB installed (post one), navigate to the C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools folder on your computer. Hold shift and right click. Select "Open Command Window Here."
Input this while your phone is turned on and USB Debugging is Enabled:
To do so; you must first go to Settings>About>Build Number and click seven times.
The actual setting can then be found in Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging
Type this:
Code:
adb backup -apk -noshared -all -nosystem
(Hit Enter)
Your phone will ask for a password. Input one and remember it.
Once the process completes: continue with unlocking and rooting your phone.
Restoration:
Upon unlocking and rooting your phone: open up ADB again.
Enter this code:
Code:
adb restore backup.ab
(Hit Enter)
Input the password you saved to this file earlier, and wait for the restore to complete.
To restore your SDcard backup, first move the "sdcard" folder that was made in the backup process to your platform-tools folder.
Then run:
Code:
adb push sdcard /sdcard/
Do you have to install "ADB" ?
As far as like...clicking it and letting the windows installer install...no.
The exe file will read the commands in cmd without "installation."
Nice Work!

Locks the device.
How long is the first boot, after unlocking the bootloader, supposed to take? Mine's sitting there for quite a while already. (I had a lot of stuff installed, but still, this is really long.)
EDIT: When rebooting the custom recovery, you have to say "yes" to the message it gives you, something about keeping some recovery. I had originally said no because I didn't flash it, I just booted it once.
I just got my nexus yesterday, and this isnt the first phone that I have rooted.... however... my settings on the thing are extremely basic..
How do I enable usb debugging if I dont have the option in the settings?

Oh geeze!
I forgot.
Settings>about>version number I think...
Click 7 times to enable developer options.
Will update op soon.
Quick question: is there a reason the first post links to SuperSU version 0.98, when version 0.99 is the most recent? If version 0.99 has known issues with the Nexus 4, I don't want to use it on my device.
The 0.99 version came out after this guide was posted. I was offered to upgrade to the new version of supersu from 0.98 and so far no problem at all.
Does this work on the latest version of JB (4.2.1)?
When installing a new ROM it says to perform a factory reset through CWM, which will remove all apps and data but should keep all your pictures, videos, songs etc.
It doesn't mention to wipe the System partition as well. Is this not necessary when flashing ROMs on a Nexus?
Prior to owning the N4 I had the Galaxy S 2 and it was always stated in the OP instructions to wipe data/factory reset, wipe system, clear cache, clear dalvik and then flash ROM and Gapps.
However, I don't notice in any guides or instructions for N4 ROMS to wipe the system partition, just the data partition. Is there a reason for this or is it not necessary to wipe the system partition? Thanks. Great guide by the way.
Peace
thank u for ur effort

I actually have a question along these lines.
I just came from a LG G2X so things were different for me whenever I flashed ROM's/kernels. For one thing, I had an external sd card so whenever CWM made it's backups, they went to that automatically and I didn't have to worry about wiping since everything was on the external. This phone doesn't have an external so where do the backups go? From the looks of the new CWM 6.0.2.0, the backups (and blobs now apparently) go to /data/media/clockworkmod. Well I guess my question here is if you have to wipe /data for installing new ROM's, how would I restore a backup because they would have been deleted off the /data partition. I tried adb pulling /data/media/clockworkmod to my computer but it won't go. Don't know if it's because that partition is mounted while the phone is in use or what. I tried the mount/umount command that OP listed but it won't work for me. Don't want to flash ANYTHING on this phone until I know for a fact I can get to the backups that I'm creating.

Sorry, but devhost deleted the ZIP , don't know why.
Will try it to upload another time.
Why not use mediafire or a shared file in dropbox.
Is there anywhere else I can obtain some of these files in the meantime?
