Xoom Overclock... - Xoom General

I've decided I'm going to flash and overclock my Xoom... it currently runs a stock US ICS build but I'm not happy with laggy live wall papers and limited H264 performance...
I'm hoping a mild overclock will address this along with a new ROM?
I've had a look about but all the guides seem to be from 2011 and talk of gingerbread
Could anyone point to a guide that would be usable on a Wifi only ICS xoom?
I've flashed my HTC-HD2 no problem so hopefully wont brick the xoom!

Until I moved to Jellybean last night, I was using this and running at 1504MHz with no probs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571467
Rather than a full custom rom, it's an almost standard one with a few tweaks.

Thanks Alpine101....
Thats also a dilemma... my xoom is a stock US ICS so I bet when I get home tonight I can go to JB....
Can I root and overclock that?

There are people working on full custom roms, but I prefer pretty standard ones, I'm hoping the chap who did the one I mentioned might also do one for JB. JB is not enormously different from ICS4.0.4. Except that flash doesn't work properly any more and it's a bit smoother on scrolling.

Yep me to... stock look and feel, no bloat but performance tweaked is what I'm after....
Maybe I'll go JB and wait a while...

Question is, how does an ICS @ 1.5GHz compare to JB @ 1.0GHz? Interesting comparison with the theoretical improvements to efficiency in JB that should consume fewer resources/power.

I have JellyBean running oc'd
SD is R/W Charge light is on etc
will make a new rom when i get time in the next day or two
I have been doing a custom firmware for my nas's the last few days

Thor Rom 14.2 Vs KJY2010 Honeylicious Icy Faux

Anyone ever use both of these roms and can give me a comparison?
I want to have an ice cream sandwiched themed tablet. I'm currently on the Thor rom and am considering on switching to the honeylicious Rom. I'm extremely happy with it, however auto brightness and hardware rotation lock do not work.
Ultimately, what i'm wondering are things like battery life, smoothness, etc... of the Honeylicious Icy Faux compared to Thor's rom

I think it would be better if you asked this question on the honeylicious rom thread instead of making a new thread.
that being said, ive been looking at honeylicious also for the same reasons. I like roms that get updated frequently and honeylicious seems to be the flavor of the month.
Honeylicious is a great and smooth stock based ROM. It's suited for those who like to be closer to the stock Acer ROM - though battery life is longer on Honeylicious, as well as wi-fi signal is better!

Don't want to get into this because of conflict of interest lol, but he clearly stated that "though battery life is longer on Honeylicious....". Anytime you're using a kernel that overclocks your processor, your battery life is going to diminish, that's just common sense

NO.
I have never flashed Thor Rom.
I said that Honeylicious Rom has longer battery life compared to the stock Rom.

What do you mean conflict of interest? You should be promoting your ROM and explaining why it is the best!
I'm currently running Thor's ROM, but i want to give this one a try and see what it's like. It would be nice to open the browser and not have to send apps in the market to my "Asus EPAD"
I'd love to hear a list of pros/cons of each ROM. Please share. Currently on Thors but would love to get auto brightness working and such. Will the typical user really see much of any difference, especially if we maybe have a hybrid of Honeylicious for the ROM and Thor's Kernel?
You cant compare apples and Oranges.. Two totally diffrent roms
the honey rom is not new..
I got it months ago from the devs page.. there has always been a link in his post . just new to being posted..
I am using something very similar to his rom and do trust that he would not put no type of unwanted or unethical software in it..
Thor s rom is much faster but it does eat battery and will occasionally lock up or stall .. the browser sometimes will just exit on its on.. with that said its the overclocked kernal and settings pushed to limits to get it faster..
for me my tablet is for checking email reading web forums books and gps .. I dont need it to be faster...
My point is, how are they completely different ROMs? What is so different between them?

Thor uses a completely custom kernel for which he will not post source code, which is why he's not allowed to publish his ROM at XDA, yet he has his lackeys posting threads for his ROM here (always a way around it).
His ROM is a port from the Asus Transformer, not from our device.
I'll not say a bad thing about it. I don't use custom kernels in my ROMs. After you flash a few dozen ROMs you'll understand why

Back to stock HC + OC @1.4GHz and not so bad after all!

I bought my carrier-free Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G in early January, this year, upgraded to latest stock ROM just out-of-the box and after a few days of familiarization pretty frustrated at how slow and laggy it was I flashed KANG ICS and happily used it until a couple of days ago.
I always intended to flash Samsung ICS as soon as it came out because I do like and use most of Samsung apps, services and personalizations and I knew it was gonna be a looong wait BUT the other day I finally snapped and decided to give the stock Honeycomb another try... So I flashed the latest Samsung HC ROM (in the meantime a slightly updated one had come out, 3.2 KL4 instead of 3.2 KL1) and, most importantly, this time I flashed Pershoot's kernel (BTW, AGAIN THANK YOU!!) plus the latest SetCPU bought on the PlayStore, overclocked the Tab to 1400MHz and...... WOW, IT'S USABLE!!!!
Absolutely stable too (but I already knew it from my tests at both 1200 and 1400MHz on KANG ICS where OC isn't so much necessary anyway, and in fact decided to keep it at 1200 MHz).
Now, it still is nothing to write home about but I really like to have the cameras "back" and the overall much better (to me, YMMV) user experience of the Samsung stock ROM.
To be honest if this was all this tablet was ever going to be I would sell it tomorrow but for waiting this dang official ICS update I really think this combo is worth a try, I really was surprised!

Didn't notice big changes between 1000 and 1200 MHz and am not noticing big changes now between 1200 and 1400 MHz. Sorry that I can't give a more precise answer but the fact is that I have never really paid too much attention to battery life because it has simply never been an issue, practically always lasted me a whole day. In almost 5 months the times I have had to give it a quick charge mid-day have been very rare.
Of course use varies a lot from day to day, but even in some days that I have spent the whole day at home (sick, snow, whatever) and used it a lot through the day I made it to the end of the day (OK, in those occasions barely, but still..).
So, what do I use ma Tab for? 60% internet browsing, 20% Youtube, 10% book reading, 10% all the rest (mainly things I do with my Note when out and about or with the PC at home but am too lazy to get up ).
Wi-Fi is of course always on and so is the 3G module (I keep in the TAB a SIM card I use when abroad and need to be able to occasionally send and receive texts on it).
P.S. BTW, the governor has always been set to "Interactive"
On stock HC I was usually able to get 3 or 4 days of battery life. Community ICS ROMs have always left something to be desired in terms of battery life - I get about 2 days with light usage.

Personally I can't say I am seeing big differences between KANG ICS and the current stock one, I mean I am sure there are differences but they mustn't be that big or I would notice.
BTW, I absolutely hate having to recharge the Tab mid-day probably just when I do want to use it so I plug it every night (unless, of course, I have really used it for a very little time).
which kernel did you use exactly? The latest pershoot's kernel seems to be build for ICS.

This one is for: "10.1 3G, Touchwiz UX (HC 3.2 (stock) GT-P7500"
and there are others for the Wi-Fi version, LTE one etc.
Works a charm.
I use it for nearly half a year with HC and overclocked to 1,4 Ghz. Rocksolid. Runs for weeks without the need to reboot. Only if some appudate is ****ed up. Very happy. Great battery too. Got rid of all the junk which is preinstalled.

pershoot is ThE man, it's definetly his kernel what makes the ROM work correctly and not going bye bye after little use like stock kernel.
Other things are addition but in this case, pershoot's work has saved Samsung with this tab. They should pay him big, BIG money.

After a week's use I can confirm it is more stable than stock indeed.
For example, on stock I used to have the browser close and reload (one of the very reasons I went to KANG ICS). Now, no more!

Also, what's the procedure to go back to stock (unroot, stock recovery)?

Yes, to be able to OC the Tab you need root.
Root it, flash CWM recovery and then Pershoot's kernel.
(You can also flash Pershoot's kernel via Odin but once you're rooted why not do it right and get CWM too...)
Lastly, get SetCPU on the market, set the OC at 1200 MHz first (make sure "set on boot" is checked), test if it's stable then set it at 1400 MHz and be done with it (my advice is to leave the rest of the settings alone).
To go back to stock my advice is to flash the stock ROM via Odin (you can download them on samfirmware, for example) and do a full wipe/factory reset.
Thanks, I'll try it later today. What about stock recovery? Can I use the one which is included here

Yes, that's the thread I too used to root and get CWM.
Stock recovery? I don't think so and as I said once rooted there really is no reason at all to not get CWM also (being able to do nandroid backups by itself makes it worth it).
If you follow the instructions in the thread you linked, once you are rooted getting CWM is a piece of cake.
OK, I just tried it too and the tab now is noticeable faster and scrolling is smoother. I rooted it, flashed cwm recovery, installed setcpu and now it runs at 1.4ghz. The reason I want to know how to go back to stock recovery is if I have to send it to service or decide to sell it. Is the one in the link I posted compatible?

Android 4.1.1 / Cyanogenmod 10 - Your impressions

I want to know what you guys think of the new Jellybean ROMs that we've all been blessed with. Are you happy with it? Any comments, anything? Just wanted to hear what you all think about the new OS on our tablets.
Personally I love it more than anything. Honeycomb and ICS have been nothing but pure lag, from stock ROMs to custom ROMs. I never thought I'd see the day this tablet actually performed smoothly, so when Jellybean first arrived (and pretty damn fast, as well), I was excited. Tried the ROM and loved it, it's just ridiculously smooth, and it works. Now I still get lag playing MC3 or Monster Life, but those are heavy games and Gameloft is pretty ****ty when it comes to properly making an Android game so that's excused. But other games like Dead Trigger work without a hitch, and emulators no longer suffer either. And just for being Android, it gets even better since I can use a wireless mouse over USB OTG, a BT keyboard, and a PS3 controller for games and emulators. All thanks to Jellybean, my tablet is awesome now
And also a thanks to MapleSyrup and pershoot, for the two that gave us Jellybean ROMs at all
Yes, i like cyanogenmod 10, it's smooth and I haven't really noticed any over the top bugs...Battery life could be better but i prefer to sacrifice battery for that smoothness... And now that leads me to Samsung and their ****ty update plan...I mean come on i have waited 8 months to get ICS that lags like hell and doesn't play youtube videos correctly?...They should have just skipped ICS and focus on jelly bean...Other tablets are getting jellybean and we just got ICS, wonder how much will it take them to provide the stock jellybean...another 8 months?(i'm a fan of touchwiz that's why i *****...and i don't want a 7 inch tablet(nexus 7)).
I Skype lots so need a working camera. Can't wait till CM10 has the camera driver. Any word on wheh this can be expected ?
I have cm10 and it seems so fast but a Quadrant test must tell it's value...the previous tests show that ICS is faster but JB's graphics are better...
Now that the rear camera is working the ROM is worth flashing(I never use the camera but couldn't bear it's loss...).
What do you TouchWiz fans think about putting it on the JB?it seems possible, doesn't it?let me know... ...

The reason Quadrant scores are lower in JB is because JB puts the UI at a higher priority, basically to keep the whole thing smooth. Antutu's latest update takes that into account and as far as I know, it's the only benchmark app that has been updated for Jellybean.
I keep installing ROMs on here to find the smoothest reliable ICS or JB, and CM10 is working beautifully for me. I especially like the subtle mods, like weather on the lock screen, email count in status bar, ability to enter settings without the app you were in being closed by the system, three action lockscren... the list goes on.
Definitely gets my vote unless you can't live without camera.

I actually used CM10 Preview by pershoot and was highly impressed by the performance and smoothness. However, I recently started to require skyping for work related meetings so had to switch back to ICS 4.0.4. When JB works with front camera, expect me to be the first in line.

Android 4.1.1? which one? confused like hell!?
Maybe it is only me confused here. and this is my first post, so be gentle
so I got excited when Samsung finally release Android 4.0.4!, could not wait so I downloaded UK Galaxy Tab 10.1 wifi (I have US one).
all good, but still not smooth, slow, then realize we need Android 4.1.1 (I have Google Nexus 7)...so jumped here, checking JB ROMs. that's when I start get confused. which one should I download that has less bug? Android 4.1.1 - CyanogenMod 10? or Toldo's JellyBeanRom ICS v5? or MapleSyrup's JellyBeanRom ICS? when you read each post (usually hundreds of replies), you even got more confused...
don't take me wrong, I love what our developer is giving us! even if this my first post, I already donated. however, it would be so helpful if there's new thread that lists all JB ROMs, and clearly outlines what works and what does not works, of any additional fixes. Now my galaxy tab 10.1 sitting there, staring at me, and dying to get on JB
Cheers to all:good:

I've been using CM10 builds from Pershoot and I've been really pleased. Fast, responsive, and all the apps I use day-to-day work beautifully. Battery life is trouble-free. I do occasionally get lockups, but I'm too lazy to try to identify how -- a lot of the time, it's opening large PDFs. Otherwise, most tasks are trouble-free. Rear cam works beautifully.
Unfortunately, I'm cursed with an SCH-i905 -- and no 4G LTE until Samsung gets off their ass and releases source that pershoot can merge. When that day comes, I will wet my pants in excitement.
I have a 4G LTE phone as well, so I just tether the tablet, and life is grand... but I sure would love to have it natively working on my tab. For a few months I had to revert back to stock HC on it because I needed the 4G... now that I've switched back to CM, I've been very happy.

It is CM10, even the developers hate to hear it called CMX... This is Android, not Crapple!
For me, it is running great on both my tablet and my phone minus the occasional scrambled boot on my tablet (never happened on cm9 or any other roms) which I still get after updating to the official ICS boot loaders. But, it seems way more polished and complete then the early versions of CM9. I have made it my daily driver on both devices. Battery life is better than 4.0.4 also as long as you turn off Google now and so e of the location services. It will only get better with time...
BAHA - Crapple.
Yeah sorry about that - it does say CM10 in my sig, I just got lazy typing last night. My bad.

So Crappie owns the letter X? I use it as a roman numeral when abbreviating CM.
Also, I'm curious, what difference do the ICS bootloader provide? Is it a noticeable improvement?

Haha, of course they don't own it... I just heard entropy tell someone in another thread not to call it cmx Since the boot animation that coined the cmx name is in no way official and they (cm10 dev team) have never called it that. If people are searching for answers about cm10 and people are calling it cmx, it may confuse users and make them think cmx is something different. We all know it is not, but we should all be using the real name for consistency purposes, right? I didn't mean to be an a**, just stating the facts.
Whereas CM10 is still in alpha stage, I can say that it works very well! This promises to be the best ROM.
I was running MapleSyrup's AOSP JellyBean build for about a week and then switched over to pershoot's CM10. While I found they were very similar I stuck with CM10 because it feels a bit smoother. I had a little issue with a scrambled screen when booting where only for a second or two the screen was rolling but cleared up afterwards. I did not have a rolling recovery screen. I updated the bootloader to the ICS version and it's been great since. I also haven't had any SOD's either when charging overnight or just sitting there.
The only issue which I still have is Youtube HD videos get very choppy and this happened on both JB builds.
But another good news tidbit is that HBO GO was updated to support JB and that was the only thing I was missing since running an ICS rom. And it seems to work perfectly!
So, thanks go out to Maple and pershoot and all the other devs out there that contribute to getting us up to speed. I was just over my dad's house and updated his GTab to ICS for him and all the while I was chuckling because I've been running JellyBean for a while before he even got ICS!

I am on MapleSyrup's AOSP JellyBean, and you said "updated the bootloader to the ICS version"? I am a little confused. .how do you do that? what the benefit? I am assuming when you said bootloader to ICS version, you meant latest ICS stock?

[Q] How's Jellybean?

To those of you using JB on the MT4G: how is it? Stable? Good enough to be a daily driver? Everything important working for you?
I'd love to flash JB on my MT4G but I'm not sure if it's stable enough yet and the ROM threads are long and winding enough that I have trouble following them. I have a phone with the dodgy eMMC chip so I'd rather not spend all day flashing ROMs to try them out myself and possibly killing my phone in the process. I'd love to find a JB ROM that has all major features working and is close to stock JB (I don't like too much bling in my ROMs).
Thanks!

I'm using 0.0's Jellybean port based off the Desire S and it's been going good for the past few hours. Everything works for me, well except that front facing camera. That doesn't work on Jellybean yet. Dropping down the MPs in the camera removes the green line. I also do have the bad eMMC chip but I've been flashing almost every week to see which one is the best for me. I love ICS, especially Synthetic.Nightmare's ROM but Jellybean is getting better so I might try that for a week see how it goes.

JB is great. There are a couple things that don't work. You could, i don't know, CHECK THE THREADS!

JB is great if you don't really need video recording and FFC.
It's stable enough for a DD.
I was using CNA for awhile and then I used Awesome's Toasted Marshmallow since release.
Rocking 0.0's desire S port since he posted it... Loving it so much that I haven't even bothered flashing anything else.
Rock solid on my device. Just need ffc really... But we all know about that.
JB rocks.

There are other viable options than 0.0's ROM like Awesome's Toasted Marshmallow, which many people run and have success as their daily driver. It's really your choice!

I've tried many of them, but I personally like Toasted Marshmallow from ...Awesome... It is a very stable ROM. A couple of items that don't work are Front Facing Camera (FFC) and Wifi Calling, but those are not an issue with the ROM, they are more akin to not having an official JB kernel for the MT4G. I'm anxious for Wifi Calling to get released on another JB ROM so we can port it. Good luck with whichever ROM you decide on.
For those who tried both ICS and JB, how would you rate JB compared to ICS? Much faster and more stable? Currently I'm running on Awesome DarkUnicorn 2.5 and it is very good except for: 1. some camera apps from the market won't work 2. USB tethering doesn't work.

Most peeps claim jb is faster than ICS as it should be being a update but for me ICS has been faster .

JB's UI is faster, ICS's games, apps, and everything else are faster and more stable (we have had a lot more time to perfect it)

Thank you. So I guess once 3.0 is out, JB would be better than ICS? I didn't experience any UI lag on my ICS. So I guess I will stay on ICS for now.

No. Once 3.0 is fixed to work as well on our devices and all the jb optimizations are added in, THEN jb will surely be better than ics. As is, comparing the UI of jb to ics (aospx) I noticed no difference in UI. Though some people swear its buttery smooth and soo much better... even though its running a 2.6 kernel optimized for ics (not jb)... the only thing I've found to be smoother in jb is the browser.

[Q] Best Rom out there currently for TF101?

Hey guys, as you all can see I am "VERY" New here. I have been on this thread for 2 years now, and just now decided to make a Account.
Anyways away from me, and more to my TF101.
I am searching the Development Section of this Forum for the TF101, and can't find a Solid Rom for my TF101.
Any suggestions? I am currently on "Caliber 4" and It likes to Lag out of no where, and I experience slower performance over all.
So how about you guys Help a Comrade out?
Also if you could, could you list some "Possible" Bugs with the Rom? Thanks.
Best TF101 ROM.

I recommend Android Revolution HD (ARHD):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245892
I have tried many ROM's but keep coming back to ARHD. It is the most stable and has all of the features I want.
Much more smother & stable than the stock ASUS ROM.

I use Teameos Jellybean with KAT 47B Kernel for everyday usage and it's fine ' bear in mind if you go the Jellybean route you lose FlashPlayer - but I believe there's a way around that to.

I'm also using team EOS with kat kernel 47b and you're right, it's very stable. I've been using it for 2 weeks now and I have no complain at all. It's significantly faster and smoother than stock ICS...
Just install flash player. I am using Firefox beta with flash player and everything is working good.
Currently flopping between Mattmanwrx's Paranoid Android and Energy Rom by NRGZ28.....
Have to say im pleasantly surprised by Energy (i.c.s).....i was expecting it to be laggy compared to Jellybean but its not (apart from coming out the app drawer.....slightly)
Looks mint, performs amazingly - a well rounded experience!
Nice to be back on official based Asus for a change - and i feel that apart from ARHD, its going to be well supported unlike the other i.c.s roms.
As for stability and performance on Jellybean then i have to agree EOS is your best bet.....i just like how PA worked for me and the developer is really helpful.
Tough call....just try them all out

I'm using Revolver 4 by Gnufabio (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518768) and it runs very smooth and with a bit overclocking even smoother (1.5 ghz). I haven't recognized any bugs in two weeks now. It is based on ICS from ASUS but it's much better in performance compared to the stock rom. No reboots, no FCs just TF101 performing nice. I had problems watching 720p videos but now it's lagfree (using MXPlayer). The battery life is almost the same as with the stock ASUS rom. Give it a try, it is perfect for me, even without jellybean.
