MKV files

Hi I have a nexus 7 and want to move some videos from my pc to the tablet but a couple of them are in mkv format. Does anyone know if there are any good mkv converters in the market(google play). I know there are plenty out there but has anyone used one on their Nexus 7, and can confirm they work ok? Or is it best to convert it first on my Windows 7 desktop before transfering to the Nexus

I use BSPlayer to play MKV files. It plays them perfectly smooth and with sound. I've also tried others, such as MXPlayer, but that plays videos without sound.

MKV is a container format which have many Codecs.
Convert the video with your PC.

Thanks for the answers guys, I a now having trouble putting my music onto this nexus 7. I had no problem putting music from iTunes to my HTC one s phone but they will not paste onto my nexus 7. Can't figure out what I am doing wrong at the moment

In my experience, MoboPlayer is the best and MXPlayer follows it!!

I've been playing MKVs locally and across my home network with XBMC
Works great for cover art and subtitles. No lagging or any other issues so far

Thanks again for the replies, believe it or not while I was playing around adding files to my nexus(or trying to I should say) i decided to listen through haedphones. I`ve had it for over a week and have only listened through the speaker, and now I find my headphone jack is not working, so have contacted Google and am getting it replaced.
I usually try all functions straight away and feel stupid that its taken me over a week before i tried headphones

MXPlayer is my first choice and diceplayer is second.

I think you can only transfer files up to 4GB (or something).
You can try using airdroid.

Just change from H/W to s/w decoding and it plays sound fine.

You can also try the beta of vlc player for android. I use it for mkv playback and its awesome.

Dice + plugin if mkv file is on local storageor on a windows/samba share, else Plex. And Plex is wholesome

I use mxplayer but if you want to make them mp4 without a full re-encode, use Xmedia Recode. It will take a large MKV to an MP4 in less than 10 minutes typically.

Generally i use mkvavi2mp4 http://sourceforge.net/projects/mkvavi2mp4/
Only recodes audio when its not compatible with mp4.
I've also used gotsent in the past which worked ok but tended to recode the video when i didn't want.

@OP, Mx Player plays .MKVs, but once in a while it has problems with a certain video, in my experience. In that case I use Dice player [Now ad-free version is Free, donationware]. Also Mx Video doesn't seem to be able to play .AVI with H/W decoding. For some reason Dice Player can though. I dunno why Mx Video doesn't make it so they can H/W decode .AVIs too but nonetheless, it works great for .MKV and .MP4 [x264, h264, etc].

If Mx Video doesn't have any sound, touch the Note icon and select S/W. It will S/W decode pretty much any sound [including AC3] with S/W, but a lot of times it can't decode a certain sound codec with H/W. You can use H/W video and S/W sound at the same time.

BSPlayer is the best out there for mkv IMO. Smooth as butter, also over the network e.g. using a cifs mount.

Is there a video player that can properly play 720p mkv videos? It seems like all that I've tried are glitchy.

have you tried mx player? using software decoding i am getting decent results....

Yeah +1 for MX Player

Diceplayer ? Used it on all my devices and no problems ...

I'm using Dice Player. It seems to work with HW acceleration.

I've always used MX player, but i'm hoping to see good things from VLC for android once it comes out of beta.

I also use MX Player. If the video or sound isn't working, switch between the H/W and S/W decoding modes. I haven't run into any problems yet.

MX Player here as well. It's on all of my devices. MX for video and Mixzing or Ubermusic for tunes.

I use BSPlayer too and also stream from a networked hard drive flawlessly. I also like the fact that when I play a new movie, it would automatically search, suggest a list of and download subtitle files for me if I don't already have one. :good:

I have a 6.5 GB 720p mkv file. Here's my experience on the Nexus 7:
Dice Player: Surprisingly doesn't recognize it. It used to play everything. Oh well...
VLC player: Crashes.
Real Player: Cannot recognize it.
BSPlayer: Plays is flawlessly, except the audio is a bit on the low side. Not sure I'd hear it with headphones on a plane.
MX player: No audio.
I hope that helps. BS Player is what I'll be using from here on till someone has another suggestion that works.

mkv no sound?

I tried a bunch of video player and the stock player. My mkv files play fine without any sound. they all have sound on my Note 10.1... any ideas? I didn't expect this
P/S: just found the solution. issue solved with BSplayer... meh I didn't expect this at all. Samsung note tablet can play everything nicely tho.

Having the same issue and experimenting now, so far neither SD or HD h264 mkvs are playing nice through hardware decoding (I either only get software with sound on a low frame rate or hardware with smooth frame rate and no sound). My guess is we are going to have to wait for some folks more talented then myself to put together a custom kernel/codecs to get things running properly.
Edit: tried bsplayer solution, it works decent enough for now, playing 720p mkv smooth enough (around 28fps) with software decoding, sure that's going to eat battery but great workaround in the meantime

Keep in mind that Samsung has the best native codec support of any Android vendor, and will pay the licensing fees for those codecs to be installed on their proprietary devices like the Note or Tab or GS line.
Stock Android as found on the N10 is 100% open source, and Google doesn't necessarily pay for third-party codec support, they leave that to the end user and third-party applications to deal with.

NO PROBLEM (Hakuna Matata), just download BS PLAYER, it plays everything, if the sound is a little bit low for you, then purchase the BS PLAYER PRO version , it increases the sound by 200%.....

I rooted and installed MXPlayer with DTS libs. 1080p MKVs with DTS works great.
Now I wait for CIFS, OTG, and XBMC.

How about MX Player? It's what I use primarily for .mkv videos, and it seems to work nicely, in my experience anyway.

MX Player is usually my go-to player, but it does not decode DTS audio due to licensing restrictions. VLC does decode DTS audio, which is why I suggested it. If you are in the USA you have to download the nightly version from the site since it's blocked on the Play Store.

How do i get and install dts libs to get dts to work?

Dice player does work with dts but the lip sync is out. Is there a guide to getting dts to work with mxplayer?

Which video player plays really *smooth*?

I have tried several players (MX, Dice, BS, QQ), but only MX and QQ do hardware acceleration and none of them plays really smooth.
For testing, I used a 720p 24fps Blu-ray rip which plays smoothly on my Galaxy Nexus using MX.
On the N10 it's only *almost* smooth, it looks a bit like if it cannot update the screen fast enough (maybe because of the resolution).

Developers probably need some time to update their app to support Nexus 10's hardware decoder. I would shoot them an email for status.

BTW, I also tried that Timescape 1440p video and I tried the Google Movies Player. Same problems.

Thanks for the tip. But VLC does not finish scanning at start. Have to force close it.
Also tried VPlayer, but it shows a black screen when HW decoding is enabled.

Try mx player. And dont forget to download mx player decoder based on your procie.

Yeh I'm sorta disappointed at the player also cannot find a video that can display this screens potential and run without dropping frames' I'm sure software can help with this and app updates. Also every website image looks so bad on this screen due to websites not having hi red images lol I'm sure they will fix that for the iPad and in turn for us lol

Already tried MX. What codec should I download? I thought MX displays a message, if you should download a codec.

Maybe the problem is related to 24p. I will have to find something in 60p.

Would be interested in this also as I currently can only use S/W decoder on MX Player.

Give MoboPlayer a shot.

I have yet to recieve an update and all files I try and play I get "Cannot play this file with H/W decoder", and S/W I get like 7 FPS.

[Q] Really Disappointing Galaxy Note 3

hi friends
i bought a galaxy note 3 exynos octa yesterday
when i play movies and seek the forwar it take long time to seek
but the same video on samsung s4 will do perfect after notification about update i updated my phone
now the same video say the audio codec not supported
i am really disappointed
is there any solution to playback without lag and codec issues?

Personally, I find that Samsung's stock video player is a vast, vast improvement over any other stock player. True, it doesn't play everything you can throw at it but it is far more capable than say the HTC stock player, or the vanilla Android video player on the Nexus devices because the codec support with these is just shocking. Point being, as stock players go, Samsung's is probably the best - I certainly wouldn't call it rubbish, though YMMV.
I've not tried VLC for a while now, but last time I did (probably a year ago) I found it very poor, though I used to use Diceplayer and MX Player Pro a lot and always found them to be ok. These days, I usually use the Archos video player with the free codec pack when stock doesn't quite work for me, which isn't very often on my Note 3, but almost always when using my HTC One or Nexus devices (5 & 7).

Another disappointment is that metadata does not work on the Note 3. You would think something as advanced as this and it would work.

now i am using mx player with dts codec
but the mx player seem to have problem with playing m2ts with dolby digital sound
seeking forward and backward is really laggy and took 3 to 5 second and the sound will crash
what about vlc or dice are they capable playing 1080p m2ts without crash ?
