Getting a xoom - Xoom General

I have a deal to buy a wifi only motorola xoom for 200 is that a good deal or should i go with something else
droid razr maxx

If you're not one to get in a fit over specs, and want a cheap 10" tablet, it's a decent deal. But if you don't mind the 7" feel, then get the Nexus 7 tablet. I'm waiting to see how Jelly Bean 4.1 feels on my Xoom and I might keep it myself. Are you planning to root the Xoom?

The Xoom is a great device if you can deal with the almost 2 yr old specs. I like to 10" Form Factor with the latest Google updates. They just keep dragging it along for the ride. You cant go wrong with either device.

Go look for the xoom universal root and guide. Did the trick for me, and only takes about 5 minutes.

If you plan on rooting and flashing a custom rom the xoom is a good choice over the nexus 7. Since it just came out and has limited space you would be hard pressed with what you could install on it. With the xoom you don't have to worry about it.
Also what size wifi are you getting?

Well I wouldn't say that, since I haveboth and there's basically the same options plus/minus for both. That said, the Xoomis a pleasure to flash on and we've got great options.

I prefer a larger screen size and would recommend the Xoom over all of the 7" tablets. I am partial to Amazon's access to content with the Kindle Fire, even the Nexus 7 can't really compare. When Amazon makes a 10" tablet, there might be an acceptable Android alternative to the Xoom. As it us all other choices are too locked down, flaky or both to be worth mentioning.
$200 is a great price for a wifi Xoom in perfect condition and some warranty left on it.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium

I tend to agree with the overall consesus. I use my Xoom mostly as video player, and for my needs, I require immediate access to several 10s of GB of videos. For that reason alone, the Xoom is still y favorite device. As far as the Specs go, I've had mine for a year, and have yet to have it start choking the way my one and half year old phone does.
I think it sounds like a great buy. Let us know what you decide!

A lot depends on what you want it for. I like the 10 inch form factor but I have big hands. I like the Xoom as it has two cameras. Important to me. It has an sdcard slot - also important. The Xoom is well supported by developers and Google up to an including jelly bean. However, the nexus 7 is a great deal for 200.00. So if you don't mind less options on it but faster processor and smaller form factor it would be a great choice. Oh, and less space even on board. But I use the Xoom a lot as a multimedia streamer to my television through HDMI out.

I came from a SG2 and galaxy tab 7. I find the xoom awesome with some overclock it run better than my SG2. And for the price, it was the best choice, other tablet had the same spec but with 16go of HD instead of the 32 for the xoom.
Root it then switch to tiamat and you have a very nice tablet

While I love (love, love, love!) my Xoom and enjoy singing it's praises, there are already loads of threads (recent ones) like this. Just look in back pages of General and Q&A sections and you will find loads of opinions.
That said, you should definately get a Xoom, root it and flash a custom recovery and a rom and/or kernel in order to overclock and get some very sweet features. My Xoom goes everywhere with me and did I say I love it?

I think specification wise and updating wise nexus but two caveats
1-no rear camera
2-no external sd card slot(so important for some)
If you could endure that so nexus not endure so gtab2

Yeah external is big. I know you can buy a adapter and use a USB storage for the nexus but seems like a hassle. Also development seems good over here so I may just buy the galaxy

I was thinking of the Nexus for the screen and processor or Tab 2 for the SD card slot and the Student Edition at Best Buy. Figured I'm not going to be using it much in direct sunlight and I'll almost definitely need expandable storage so went with the Galaxy. First Samsung device and I'm really happy with it. A lot of development options, had it rooted in 20 minutes, etc. The keyboard that came with the Student Edition is pretty handy if I'm going to be typing notes for school. I'm a fan.
I just saw the app to sd problem but is it worth the wait. Unless i missed the fix

Just don't flash cm9/10 or the keyboard wont wont work. But as for 7 or gt2 it really depends on what your using it for. Do you need a lot of storage on the device?

Movies ROMs and gaming.the first two I can take care of with gt,but with such limited storage of a 8gb (5gb) tablet it hard not to fill up quick on other apps and games like Max Payne etc

Just reserved my gt2 after owning an N7 and the screen cracking into a million pieces. After watching some video comparisons on speed I don't think there's much in it plus dev here on xda is way ahead at the mo.
Even gaming there's very few apps/games that will utilize the quad core CPU. Its really a close race between them that basically comes down to the options you get. Better processor more ram better screen vs external storage front and rear cameras and better build quality.

I just switched from an Asus Transformer Prime (TF201), a member of the same pedigree as the Nexus 7, Infinity, etc. It is a piece of junk. GPS flat doesn't work (it did in an earlier firmware version), WiFi stinks, and the glass cracks if you look at it the wrong way (mine cracked from the keyboard dock...too bad since the dock was the best feature). The digitizer and screen work, but the glass has a spider web on it. Plus, Asus support is abysmal. They used to be a fantastic company, but something changed and they are AWFUL now. Stay away.
I would only consider a Nexus 7 because Google supports it.
Anyway, I jumped all over the BestBuy GT2 7.0 deal. It seemed to be the best featured device, the knowledgeable sales guy (yes, my BestBuy had one) recommended this one or the Acer, and with the special deal there, I chose the GT2 7 for $250. I am not regretting it so far. From what I have seen in this forum, the videos I saw on Youtube, and other Google search results, I think this is a deal everyone should jump all over.
For the record...I also own an Asus Netbook (1001P), and have built PCs with Asus motherboards. I jumped on the TF201 because of ASUS' reputation of making good hardware. That was my biggest mistake, and perhaps others' as well.
I was gonna buy the nexus but I really didn't want to have them ship me one as I wanted it now lol. Found the bestbuy bundle with keyboard and usb thing and WOW I love it and it's really amazing. Even just stock with root, it's a great tablet.

Well it comes with a keyboard And a real nice one too!

Are Nexus 7 owners still happy with their device now Nexus 10 is announced?

I recently sold my iPad as I havent used it since becoming an S3 and then a Note 2 owner. My initial plan was to get the new 32gb N7 as I liked the size of it and the specs seemed great too. Plus the fact its still a portable size and not to clumsy to handle.
Anyway, since seeing the N10 specs im in two minds as what to do. Are any N7 owners thinking of selling up and moving to N10 or is the N7 still capable of holding its own.

I'll move to the Nexus 10 once they announce one with a cellular radio. Otherwise, I'm happy staying on the N7 for the time being. Besides, once I get the N10, I'll gift this to my mom.
I will keep my N7. And for N10 I learned my lesson not to be an early adopter and wait a few months.

So I had a nook color as my first tablet which was 7 inches and loved it, then got an HP touchpad and put ice cream sandwich on, and I can say I rarely used my touchpad, I would a little bit here and there but it was big and bulky to carry around, however since I have gotten the nexus 7 which is almost 2 months ago now, I haven't put the thing down.
Its small enough to put in a bag, and comfy enough to type on using both hands without having to prop it up or manipulate it differently.
While its still has enough screen real estate to scale stuff right, also the UI that Google put on this kinda big phoneish in a way is awesome, this is a device meant for portrait use where as the nexus 10 feels landscape bound in nature

Most of the time I prefer 7 to 10. There are times 10 would be better (working at a desk, or doing a presentation), but if I had to pick one size it would be 7. I do wish I could have gotten 16 gig of memory for the same price though, although I'm doing fine with 8 with some care.

Seriously... 399$ for a 10 inch super hd screen with powerful processor and 2GB RAM? It's as great as a deal as on the 7.
7 is too small for serious work. If I were going to use it only as entertainment then it would be enough.

It was more of a rumor than an announcement, and i wouldn't expect it to come out any time soon.
Like I'll tell anyone, if you keep on waiting for the next big thing, you'll wait forever.
The answer is simple by answering this question. Does the desire for the nexus 4 outweigh the usefulness of your current phone?
For me, it was a no-brainer. I was not happy with my vivid stock, I did not care for the bugginess (<--- is that even a word?) of the available Roms, but loved aosp.
If you feel you'll be happy with your current phone, then wait until a phone comes out that you must have.
The phone probably won't be out till summer most likely. Then the next nexus will be around the corner. Great hardware or not I don't know if I'd even get one if it doesn't have direct from Google software updates. Don't care if its a different branch than the nexus line... It has to be straight from Google or its no better or worse than the galaxy line from Samsung or the one series from HTC.

Thats what im thinking. Ive been babying my G2 so its lasted me a lot longer than others ( the whole loose hinge shenanigans). My phone is still serving its purpose but at the same time i know it wont last that much longer. N4 seems like an awesome device with a few quirks. For those that have the N4 can you tell me what you both like AND dislike about the phone. Want to start weighing the pros and cons.

I would personally go for Nexus 4 because
1. The x phone is just a rumor and hasn't even been announced
2. If it is going to be sold by Motorola who makes money off the hardware, then the x phone will be more expensive than Nexus 4 by Google who makes money off by software (which explains the price of Nexus 4)

Viable option still?

I hope nobody gets offended by me asking this, but is the galaxy tab 2 7.0 still worth getting right now? I was thinking of getting a 7 inch tablet with a rear camera. I don't need a super great camera because its more on taking pictures of receipts and docs. Maybe a few normal pictures. I know it has JB so that's great. Its has gps, bluetooth, otg, and the good stuff like that. I'm afraid that the tablet may have run its course already. Is the processor going to keep up much longer or will it be considered to far back like the 1ghz single core? I want to get it and last more than a year or a year and a half without problems on performance and stuff. I've seen the 8gb wifi version for around $170. Or should i wait for something else to pop up?

I do not have a ton of insight on the subject, but while I'm happy with my tab, other companies are producing tablets with better specs in the gtab 2's price range, and as some of them are much newer, like one of asus's new tabs, they might have a longer shelf life, support wise and hardware. Personally, i enjoy all the dev activity we have on this tab.
Edit: acer not Asus. Asus's 7 inch 150$ is lower in specs.

My bad, i didn't realize the nexus 7 didn't have one. Acer's will though. And he did ask if any were going to be coming out.
And the reason i mentioned nexus is because i have been thinking of getting one.

Nexus 7 has no camera? Man, maybe that's why it has better specs than the Tab 2.
To answer OP's question, yep, I think this Tab is still worth getting. It's currently at the top of the list of the most tablets sold, beating even the Nexus 7.

Thats prolly cause most people dont really know bout the other tablets on the market. other than what they see on tv or in places like walmart or best buy.. lol
most people are like oh galaxy s3 or iphone this.. never hear someone say oh gotta get that new acer tablet lol
I say the tab 2 for the price. is still a pretty good deal. but i have no use for a wifi only tab. which i why i spent extra to get the 3100 instead.. still the cam sucks but for quick shots outside etc. its fine..
There are better tablets out there. and not so better tablets out there. the tab 2 is right in the middle. 179 on amazon for the wifi only.. pretty good deal to me.

Get the Tab 2, Sanmobile announces that the Tab 2 will get JB updates up to 4.2.2 which is good. I ahve the skyrocket and I was on GB2.3.6, ICS4.0.4 and know JB 4.1.2 ! :sly: I extend the life of my phone from maybe two years , in the mean time S4 is maturing .....

I've just gotten the Galaxy Tab 2.0 7.0 (7") offered for 123 USD, is that a good deal? And sorry to bump the thread but is it still viable? Or should I just give the extra dough for one with higher resolution, would mostly use it for quick sketches and reading e-books.
Hey thanks everyone. I didn't want to jump into a tablet and then regret it, not because something better came out, but of the tablet not being up to par anymore.

I got a GT 2 7.0 few months ago. I considered Nexus 7 and waiting a little for other tablets to come out, but ultimately bought GT2 7.0.
1. Nexus 7 doesn't have external SD card support. If you are taking pictures, you would probably want to expand storage. And Nexus 7 doesn't have a rear camera.
2. There are other low-price 7-inch tablets coming out, like Asus Memopad (no rear camera) and Acers. But, you will never get to buy a tablet, because there will always be a new, cheaper, better tablets coming out.
3. Longevity of the tablet will depend on what you are using the tablet for. The specs and OS version do not determine how long it will last. Old smartphones (android/Apple/ others) will still work, if they are still capable of doing what you need them to do. Old Gingerbread/ICS android phones/tablets are still perfectly fine, because they still can run all the apps and do everything it should.
Specs also are a minor issue, because it will just mean that it will take few more seconds to load and run.
If GT2 7.0 will do everything you want it to and it makes sense financially, you should get it. If another tablet makes sense, you should get that one. If you are not looking to suddenly play graphic-intensive 3D games on the tablet, any tablet will last you a long time. From what you described, you may even be able to get by with a no-name brand tablets for cheaper. But, GT2 is a quality product and a good choice for the money you are going to spend.
How much memory is coded for apps only? 1GB? 2GB?

4.5 GB internal storage for apps and such.
For those on the fence, how about a $138 Like New Tab 2 7.0 shipped from Amazon Warehouse? Check it out.
The only problem with this device is the screen (it is only a MDPI). In the future, Google will only be supporting HDPI and above I think.. So, probably no Key Lime Pie for the Tab 2.
The rear camera on Tab 2 lacks AF, so it is useless for trying to get clear captures of receipts or even scanning QR codes, which the threadstarter did mention was a reason to consider Tab 2.

Hmm.... yeah that would be a problem if it can't get those properly. So even close ups don't come out clear with a fixed type camera?
