Hi
yesterday I couldnt start my phone (S5360) anymore. Every time I tried it would freeze during the boot logo. So I tried a factory reset and it worked. But now of course all data has been deleted. Is there a way to get at least my contacts back (maybe my messages too)? Would it help to root the phone and let a recovery program such as Stellar run over the system folders?
I never used google to sync my contacts and didnt create any backup whatsover either....unfortunately.
thanks
Peter

i don't think it's possible (easily). your contact saved in internal memory. any recovery software need raw access your media. maybe possible to create partition dump from recovery mode and do recovery to that image, but to really get all your data back you need a lot of work. my advice, enable sync to google contact. it's help a lot, especially if you have multiple android device or change your rom frequently.
btw, we already have Q/A section. better to put this kind of question in that section.
for the contact...you can make a backup easily by import your contact into your sdcard (*vcf file). thats the easiest method. for the sms, there are a lot of sms backup app out there. use your hand a little bit on google and you'll surely find it.

So, before my first attempt with flashing a custom ROM I made a backup with MyBackup, and like any noob included everything, all apk-s, all data, contacts and everything.
Flashed and rebooted succesfully, restored backup and then something went wrong. Everything was restored except my contacts, but also everything worked somehow buggy, with "com.google.process.gapps has stopped working" all the time and the worst part:
Restore contacts failed: unknown error
Unable to convert BLOB to string

Some contact were synced in one of the attempts, but most of them were deleted from my phone and ALSO FROM ONLINE GOOGLE CONTACTS, followed with some annoying warnings about deleted contacts. Like I didn't noticed... so, for the biggest part it was my own fault. Should have left the contacts to sync from the "cloud" - or is there another way? Also, I emailed RerWare if they could help me with that. They responded within few hours (very nice!) and here is a part from their answer:
We have a minor bug which affects a small amount of users. People who made a contacts backup from Android 1 device and restoring it on an Android 2 device. (contacts only)...
This issue has been fixed and will be out in the next release. If you can not wait until then, you can send us the .ZIP backup file, and I will alter it so you will be able to restore your contacts. But, if you do it this way, your contacts photos\icons will not be restored. If you want to wait for the fix, this will restore everything including photo\icons.

But in the meantime I restored it myself the hard way. There is a way to only view the contacts using MyBackup, which leaves HTML dump on SD card under "\rerware\MyBackup\tempHtml" . Copy&Paste into Excel, edit the numbers and what you have to do (little help from Google), save as csv file and import back into contacts. It will merge with existing ones so everything is fine again
Hope this helps someone
Just as a little point (not read you whole topic not got time)
never use mybackup to backup contacts especially if they are also synced with google.
Hi!
I did an update for xperia x8 today. I made a back-up for calendar, contacts and so on. When the update was finished, i tried to run the backup file to restore the information (most importantly contacts) but it said the file (.sbf) couldn't be read.
I tried taking out the sd card and putting it back in, didn't work. Tried to find a converter or a sbf reader, hoping to at least be able to see the information. No luck.
Can you repair the file? (I guess it is corrupted or something, since i can open an older backup file.) Are there any programs that can read the file? (on the phone, or on pc)
Thanks!
I don't know how to help you with corrupt sbf, but I can give you a tip for the future.
Sync your calendar, contacts, etc with gmail! It's pretty easy and very good! When I format my phone, I only backup my messages, cuz contacts are already backed up @ gmail!
Hi Vixen666,
I'm in the same situation Did you found the solosion?
Thanks!
Hello all, i'm desperately in need of your help!!
1) The problem:
-my NAND (internal storage memory) runs out of space all of a sudden when I know for sure that it has plenty of free space since I install almost everything on my microSD. All my user setting/sms/contacts were reset and emptied. Every time I reboot/turn on my phone, it always make me go through the whole Initial Setup Wizard as if it was a brand new phone. Apparently since there's 0 space available on NAND, it simply cannot save my setting.
2) Back ground Info:
- my hd2 has been running coredroid 1.5 (or 1.6) perfectly on NAND for over 6+ months.
- I know NAND is still working because I'm still able to boot into android.
3) What I need:
- I need to figure out a way to recover my contacts and sms from NAND before I reformat it and reflash android. Please help me I've been searching on XDA and google for the past hours but no dice
thanks a million in advance!!!

thanks for your response, but I dont think u understand my question. My contacts and SMS are emptied, so a regular backup app will not help me in this case. What I need is to somehow recover contacts and sms from internal storage.
Titanium backup can schedule the backup/restore
You guys are not understanding me, backup app can only backup the data that's currently there. but if the data has been deleted, these backup apps cannot recover them...
since they are gone, they have probably been removed. I don't think u can recover them..
computer memory and/or hard drives usually still retain the files that you deleted. it's possible to recover files after you format hard drive, so of course it's possible to recover files from a memory chip.
so I was looking at my TitaniumBackup folder, and I see these files:
com.android.providers.contacts-20110409-103323.properties
com.android.providers.contacts-20110409-103323.tar
com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts-20110409-103331
com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts-20110409-103331.tar
can one of the files above contain my contacts?
mythek88, first
P.S. and Titanium can backup to dropbox =)
sorry buddy...i dont think you can recover contacts and smss....they are converted into binary and stored is what i vaguely remember reading.
there is a undelete app for root users, if you are one... try this app. i cant promise it will bring back sometime, but sometime trying is all it takes...good luck
to avoid this situation, i typically sync everything with my gmail so i can always recover anytime....
Thank you for all the inputs, I've given up on trying to recover my data and have went ahead and reformat/repartition/reflashed my rom. Luckily I found an old backup of my contacts, so I only lost a handful of new numbers.

Restore SMS from mmssms.db with adb
Hi all,
Can anybody help me how to restore mmssms.db and also the contacts2.db? I read I can do it with adb, but as I tried, it sayd Permission Denied.
Can anybody write me a step-by-step guide how can I restore them for sure?
Thanks a lot.
Additionally, I tried Titanium, it doesn't see these files, so that is why is went for adb.
Please help!
Thanks a lot.
After updating my Nexus 4 to 4.4 KitKat, I have lost all of my SMS messages and contacts. Is there any way for me to get them back? I am doing a full phone image right now, and I hope I can get something out of that. It would really suck to lose all of my texts and contacts.
This is what I did to update:
Reflashed system and boot as I had mocado toolkit installed
Sideloaded the OTA
Sideloaded SuperSU without rebooting first, got stuck in a bootloop
Sideloaded OTA again
Got a inconsistent system UID problem
Used "fix permissions" on twrp recovery
Realized that I had lost all of my texts and contacts
None of my other data is gone, even my internet usage graphs are still there. It seems that only my texts and contacts are missing.
Thanks,
alfonzo1955
Your sms are probably gone, but if you use Google to sync your contacts you can just sync it back. Just check google.com/contacts.

The contacts were synced, thankfully. Hopefully my data recovery efforts will work. I really don't want to lose all those texts, so many memories down the drain.

Maybe ;D
And I think I managed to recover the sqlite database using extundelete after I imaged the device.
Can you please share how you managed to recover your text messages. I've the same problem after upgrading over to 4.4.
Thanks

I'm experiencing the same issue.
Yesterday I was notified of the 4.4 OTA update. I updating my JB Nexus 4 (stock) over WiFi and upon rebooting I realized with horror that I was missing all my SMS messages among other software issues.
I'm currently doing some research for sideloading the official 4.4 image over to my phone, as I think my SMS data is still on my phone (storage size didn't really drop after the update). I'm currently stuck on detecting my device via usb running adb devices, but troubleshooting that today. If anyone has a resource/guide for using the SDK for sideloading 4.4 that'd be helpful (Windows 7 PC). I'm searching around for one currently.
If you have any information please let us know. I'd like to restore my phone back to normal with my SMS data in tact and I'm looking to do this without rooting my phone.
If this helps at all, here's a list of the software bugs I'm experience:
No lockscreen
Home button does not work
Top swipe down does not reveal any thing and the settings button does not function
Having issues receiving incoming calls and SMSs
Powering down the phone, the only optiont hat displays is "Power Off", everthing else is missing
-
Thanks
Haven't gotten any further with this.
I just tried sideloading the KRT16S update via adb. This appears to have installed successfully, but there's been no changes to my phone or SMS. In fact, upon successful install and reboot the phone is the same as if nothing was changed (e.g. no tutorial on KitKat). I'm thinking I may need to sideload another factory install.

The SQL datatbase file for SMS is located here /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
while call logs are located in the file /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db
check if you can find any data there.
By the way, Root Browser application can view these files
confused on why you took this route to upgrade and whats wrong with simply downloading a stock rooted rom and calling it a day. Plus there are quite a few sms backup apps that could save all your precious text messages. If you used google to search this stuff then there would of been no need to start this thread.
good luck and I hope all works out well for you and anyone else with the issue. also there is already a thread on how to get back your sms when upgrading to 4.4

Hi, in these days my phone was sent to service repair. Now all data is cleared. Before repair I made a full backup via Samsung account.
Now I can't restore backup, also tried wipe data and re-flash firmware.
At first boot tried to restore backup, when it search for backups, it appear a loading bar with something like "Restore" and it looking for backups but it will disappear in few seconds.
I have minimum of 3 backups stored, tried to redo a backup manually and restore but I can't, same via Settings->Backup and restore.
What can I do? It seems that I can't restore my past and future backups.
Thank you
Hi, I have same problem, did you already solve it?
Not yet, I think that it's not a problem related with the smartphone but with the account. I think that we have to call Samsung support.
Same issue here with S7!
SOLVED! Resetted the app Samsung Cloud and then updated, reboot, wait 2/3 mins and restored backup successfully.
Did not work. How did you reset? Just cleared the data? And I see no updates..

Yes, cleared cache and data. It worked for me.
You may try to see logs.
1. Open dialer and compose *#9900#, clic on DEBUG LEVEL and select MID or HIGH, your device will reboot automatically.
2. Redo the procedure to try to restore backup(in this way you will generate the logs for your issue)
3. Open dialer and compose *#9900#, clic on RUN DUMPSTATE/LOGCAT/MODEM LOG, wait for the process to complete and select COPY TO SD CARD (include CP RAMDUMP)
4. Search for the log file and see if you can read something wrong.
Contacted Samsung Support. And that is exactly what they did - updated (some nontrivial way) Samsung Cloud app. Then I could do the restore! Hurray!
what should i do next after this?
If anyone still has this issue, what worked for me was to go to Galaxy Apps and update the Cloud app. (You have to display system apps.)
It's a tip I found here:
https://forums.androidcentral.com/s...rver-try-again-later.html?passport=1548204689
You can follow the steps to get back your Samsung data.
1. Recover the wanted data from Samsung Account. To get back your files, you need to go to Settings and elect Accounts once again. Next, choose Samsung account and tap on Restore. After that, you can select the file types that you want to restore and click on Restore now to start restoring.
2. Confirm your option. After taping on the Restore now option, a pop-up prompt will appear to ask you to confirm your action. Just tap on ok to proceed the process.
I had a problem with restoring my repaired phone. It turned out I had two Samsung Cloud accounts; one with one phone contact and approximately 6 photos. The two SC accounts were attached to two different emails. I found this out by logging in to Samsung Cloud on my PC. Then I had to do a hard restore on my phone and then I was able to sign in to the correct SC account and could restore my precious data.
