My sister just spent a week with her new Galaxy S III, she loves it and im jealous, but the battery is her only complaints. Exactly how does one turn off 4G/LTE so you can switch to 3G to conserve the battery charge?
On my MyTouch4g slide, using android 2.3.5, I click on SETTINGS -> MOBILE NETWORKS -> NETWORK MODE.
But the Galaxy S III has Android 4.04 on it. But on SETTINGS -> MORE SETTINGS -> MOBILE NETWORKS, but theres no NETWORK MODE.
Any ideas?
PS
Whats a good app that queries the hardware, tells you what speed cpu, how many, ram, etc. Kinda like a dxdiag for android phones.
EDIT: My sister uses Verizon.
Settings -> More Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode
Edit: You might need to say which carrier you're on, because that's in there for me. Have the Sprint version.
download phone info from the market if you are on vzw that will help you
ATT doesnt have this ability either
has it on Telus

Thanks, that worked. Easily switched to WCDMA / 3G mode.
I'd like to see some documentation of ho significant is going to be battery saving on 28nm Krait SoC where the radios are built in. I'm sure there is some saving, but not sure how significant will they be in areas with strong LTE signal.

Unfortunately AT&T does not have this feature....too bad cause I'm out of the LTE range where I live and not scanning for it could give me more juice for other activities.
I've noticed NO difference on my sprint GS3 with LTE. I don't have LTE in my area so one would think that my battery would drain faster but it doesn't at all

Hey guys. I Have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-I317M) and for some reason it fluctuates between HSPA+ and 3G signals rather than LTE. The device is originally locked to Rogers but I unlocked it and am now using it with MTS. I am running on jelly bean 4. 1.2 and CleanRom 4.0.5. Anybody have any ideas as to why I'm not getting LTE?

Are you still getting fast data speeds? All LTE is 3.9 g and hspa is like 3.6 g lol..

Since you only mentioned your phone model and not the important notion what your carrier is, what is it?

Yes I'm getting fast speeds but I can't help but wonder why this is happening. I mentioned that I'm with MTS so I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. I live in Canada so it's probably not familiar to you. They just started carrying S3's which are running on their LTE network and they show 4G at the top of them when activated rather than HSPA+.

Nope not familiar with Mts. That's correct.. it all depends on the towers u are near .. if they haven't upgraded there towers sorry your sol lol

It is either the towers or your phone isn't compatible with the bands of LTE (there are multiple bands like there is with UTMS).

I'm pretty sure it isn't the towers cause my friends iPhone 5 is running off LTE and he live about 5 minutes away from my house. I've also been at distances one minute away from his house and did not pick up LTE then either. I don't know much about bands or frequencies but my carrier just launched the Galaxy S3's and they run off LTE and I'm assuming the Note 2 has the same hardware. S3: 700 (Band 17), 1700/2100 (AWS) MHz , Note 2: 700(band 17) 850 AWS 1,900(band 2). I'm clueless as to what those numbers mean but i'm guessing the important thing is Band 17, right?
Try going near his house then. Or have you checked the network settings? You may have to flash something.

I have to no avail. I had a friend try to help me out over the phone with network settings and his phone appears to have a setting that mine does not. When he goes into settings > wireless and network more settings > mobile network there is an option for him to toggle between LTE, HSPA+ etc. My phone doesn't have that for some reason. All that's listed is Mobile data, data roaming, Access point names, and network operators. Nothing to toggle between networks, which is probably what I need to enable LTE. I have no idea why that setting would be absent from my device. My friend was using an S3 on the same operating system as me btw.
From what i can tell it's the frequencies . The frequencies your device have seem to be different than the frequencies the s3 have on your carrier. If it's not that then you can check your apn settings.

What model is your phone, and what model is his phone. You said you brought your phone from a competing carrier who is likely using alternate frequencies that your phone might not be picking up either due to hardware or software limitations. Without knowing the hardware, and where it came from in the first place, we can't figure out what frequencies your phone is looking for and can't answer your question effectively.
download an app that will show you what is the type of connection you are actually on.
I think that maybe its the matter of incorrect icon.
Oh well.
LTE is possible for T-Mobile only and if they cover your area. You can check this thread for a flashable zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358931
You also need to be using the correct T-Mobile LTE apn which is different than the normal 3G one, and you need to search for network operator in the settings and join T-Mobile LTE.
This phone support dual cell HSPA which is 42mbps. In the phone setting HSPA is referred as WCDMA, so select that. GSM refers to 2G. Once you correctly flash the LTE package you will start to see options for LTE as well.
I don't use any battery saving apps, but I underclock my phone and limit it to two cores since it feels fast enough. You can do this by buying Franco kernel app, but there are other ones like Semaphore, you don't have to flash any kernels but the app should still allows you some control. I also update to the latest baseband (no lte) and disable data when I can. It seems the screen eats battery so I watch the brightness as well. This phone does eats battery I think the best thing is to buy a portable battery charger or one of those battery case if it's an issue.

Ahh, so it's not possible with AT&T then. I'm maxing at 10mbps here but data drops pretty often.
Also ATT do not support DC-HSDPA, only T-Mobile, so HSPA speed on ATT will be slower as well, depending on coverage of course.

Sitting next to my sister in the car and noticed her S4 has full bars meanwhile my G2 has 1 and has 1x for data and she has a strong connection to LTE. I checked status and idk which relates to service but my dBm was 110 while hers was in the 90s and my asu was 1 and hers was 45. My service has been pretty terrible everywhere. I am running green devils latest CM nightly and I believe I flashed the latest radio in the development thread. Please help! Can't even send MMS in my house because not only is my house get bad service but my phone has really been doing a bad job getting good reception. Wondering if anyone knows what's up.

well you would be amazed what people ask. I have learned if user doesnt state it he hasnt though about it. How obvious it may seem
Maybe bad antenna. Also check which mode you have set for network, gsm,2g etc.
also note that some phones show levels differently, their multiple bars could be same as yours.

Must be something strange, I set the mobile network to LTE (recommended) and it's weird I've been trying out different modems too flashing those, the phone will boot up and have LTE, then it will disappear after a minute or so and I will literally never see LTE again where my town I have LTE EVERYWHERE.

yeah that sounds like the low reception bug some people have been talking about.
you try disabling fast dormancy. See if it works, might end up using more power though. Also try disabling the power saving option. Lte is less battery friendly so phone could be forcing itself to lower power mode when not using data. you should see it come back the moment you use data, if thats it.
Also check if ypur apn settings are correct.
Also check your provider. They might be limiting you on their end.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to manually force CDMA or LTE on the Verizon version of the S5?
I am frequently in low coverage areas where the phone is constantly searching for signal and reconnecting from lost communication. This is draining the battery very quickly when compared to being in a strong 4G LTE signal area. With marginal coverage the battery will drop 50-70% in 9 hours. With good coverage it will drop 20-30% in 9 hours. Obviously depending on usage. Today I thought I would turn off the wireless network and see how it performs and I'm only down 10% after 6 hours (marginal coverage area but obviously that doesn't matter). So clearly the radios are causing a lot of the communication.
My previous phone was a Droid Razr Maxx HD where I could enter test mode by pressing *#*#4636#*#* and I could manually configure CDMA or LTE or both. This would turn off the unused radios and allow me to save battery by eliminating the constant searching and connecting.
If nobody knows... Does anyone know of a way to get this request to the developers as a request in future software versions?
Thanks,
Pish

Hey gang,
Long story short, GF and I bought new phones (S4 and S5, respectively), and although they are both Spark phones, there is no Spark service in the area. The store rep went into the settings and somehow came to a menu with check-boxes to toggle each frequency band...he unchecked them ALL except for LTE.
I need to do the same thing on the S4, but I'm not sure how he got to that menu. Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance!

Probably to save battery life as the phone continually tries to communicate with towers to connect and cannot because that area has no lte towers.

Not only that, but I was having a lot of trouble losing signal when switching from 3g to lte and back. I don't have spark in my area so killing the other two frequencies I get a good stable handoff.
