Hi I am with Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S. I have upgraded to ICS and its working perfectly, no issues at all. My problem now is the low internal memory which is getting filled up rapidly.
Recently I read about Link2SD app which helps in creating additional space in the MICRO SD card . How safe it is to go thro the procedure? I know warranty will become void, but as far as the other aspects like battery life and the basic functionality of the phone, will it work alright?
Can someone enlighten me on this pls.
Thanks
Narain
Is your BL unlocked?
Sent from my ICS-powered arc S. From Austria! You don't know Austria? Google!
PS: Thank or PM me if you like the Rubiks Cube!
I have the same problem. I have a Locked BL? what is the solution?
what is for unlocked BL
i have unlocked BL
First there's nothing between your warranty and link2sd. That is not voiding it.
But you must be rooted for it to work. That might void your warranty, but shouldn't in 99% cases.
Take your card into reader and create 1GB ext3 partition.
Put it back and boot your phone.
Install link2sd from play store......
Locked or unlocked bootloader doesn't matter. Nothing to do with this.

Yes, but when the BL is unlocked, you can do it in recovery

Does the ext3 the best extension for the Arc S, and does link2sd the best solution ?
I'm starting to think to this solution too :good:

Just to answer myself:
with help of google , I found a nice tutorial about link2sd which explain how to create the partition ext, and how to use link2sd.
As the kernel I installed is consistent with it, I choosen to create an Ext4 partition (1Gb, I have a 16Gb SDcard).
Now, most of my user apps are linked to this ext4, that did free my internal memory.
Just a remark, as it was not fully clear for me at the beggining:
when all done and link2sd installed, the option to use is "Create link", and not "Move to SD". Please see the help to have the detail, but in summary: "Create link" move the app on the ext partition, and "Move to SD" move the app to the visible partition (the one you're using before), which is not the goal of that we're searching for...

Excellent.
I proposed ext3 only because it is supported and by stock kernel.
Ext4 is better (read faster with less tear down of micro SD card).
Ext2 is fastest but lack journalling.
Good choice.
Used link2sd on both gb and ics. Working reliably.
Since I owe and HTC Desire now I'm using a2sd script from one of Desire Roms. Only because I have class 10 card and a2sd is faster when installing and deinstalling. And it's ok in my case if all apps are moved to a2sd since dalvik cache is not moved.
Kind Regards.

Hello!
I have an Xperia Arc S with locked bootloader and stock ICS 4.3.1, i have made root and installed x-PARTS 7 and CMW 5.5.0.4, i don't have much experience but reading a lot of blogs and users experiences about MicroSD and Link2SD i have maked partitions on my MicroSD 32 GB ADATA Class 10 successfully. And just to make a reference for future friends with doubts about it, i made it like this:
1st. Partition: 29.5 GB, Primary, Fat 32
2nd Patition 1.40 GB, Primary, Fat 32
Also works with 2nd Partition 1.40 GB, Primary, Ext3
All Partitions made with MiniTool Partition Wizard Home 7.5, it's free.
And also i've made the partition directly with the recovery, obviously the process takes more time but it creates me:
1st Partition: 28.77 GB, Primary, Fat 32
2nd Partition 1.91 GB, Primary, Ext3
3rd Partition 244.20 MB, Primary, Linux Swap
But the swap partition i can't used, i have tried swapper 1 and 2 but i can't activated, i have read this only works with some no official ROMS and with custom kernels, so i recomed for stock devices like mine to make the partitions manually and Link2Sd will work with no problems. I hope my little experience can be useful for future reference.
P.D. Sorry i f my english it's no very good, moderator, feel free to fix the gramma.

even with locked bl it will work from CWM ( but needing root also of course)
just remember that you would never use link2SD to move or create link for your system app. i've done that and my phone starts to lag. After that i've created link only for google maps, gmail and facebook and i don't have lag. Just don't move too many system app's

Confirm it! I've done this procedure partitioning my SD card from CWM installed with Xparts and then used EXT3 because stock kernel don't recognize EXT4. It's usefull and, for now, I didn't notice any issues
Hello, I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc with the stock firmware (Xperia_Arc_LT15i_4.1.B.0.587_Generic_World).
I want to flash custom rom "SJB X 4.5 Enjoy Xperia Styled Jelly Bean", which is running Android 4.2.2
There are only 4 kernels which are working for this android version for Xperia Arc.
But the descriptions of the kernel don't explain if these kernels support init.d or ext-partition.
The original kernel of this custom rom is 3.4-nAa-03.
With this kernel it is not possible to create a partition through CWM, has to do it with Wizard Partition tool.
I did that and choose FAT32 as ext-partition.
But after rebooting Link2SD didn't recognized the FAT32 partition (choose 1.9GB).
It said it was unable to mount and create the link.
What should I do.
The fusion 5.5 kernel is not useful, i can create a partition through CWM, but once the rom is loaded the wifi option is blanked out.
Any good suggestions?
Link2sd is the best way to free system partition space, I am actually using an 16 GB card, with 1 Gb of Ext Partition and all is Ok.
Did you follow this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=SD_card_partitioning
Make sure both partitions are primaries, your first partition will be FAT32 and your second partition will simply be ext2 or ext3 chosen from the dropdown menu, is that how you did it?

What is the purpose of keeping a FAT32 partition on the SD card?
I am thinking in formatting the SD card as ext4 creating one huge 32Gb partition.

The ext4 partition is used to store data of your apps to free device internal space. Your computer can't read ext4 partition so you can't copy movies, music, photoes, documents... to your phone.that why you must have a fat32 partition on your SD card.

...probably not. I'm assuming if it isn't there isn't an easy way to do so and keep my data?. .. or is there? .
Use recovery 1.7 cyanogen version to make a ext2 partition then upgrade it from ext2 to ext3 to ext4. Mount your sd card and back it up before wiping it.
1 Install recovery 1.7 cyanogen
2 Boot into recovery
3 select patition sd card option
4 select partition sd
5 choose 0 for swap 1 to 2 gigs for ext2 and the rest will be fat32.
5 once that is done go back into patition sd card options and select ext2 to ext3 then after thats done select ext3 to ext4.
Hope this helps

Cyanogen did not write this recovery tool; Amon_RA created a CM-based theme for it as it was heavily requested. He also added in support for Soyars' Apps2SD implementation (what you are giving a how-to for).
You actually do not need to change ext types for this to work. For testing purposes, I left it as the stock ext partition type created by 1.7 and apps2sd works beautifully.

how can you revert the partition on the sd card?
i want to have the full space on my sd card just as it came from stock.

So that didn't seem to work.
I tried without the updating of ext3 and ext4 and no dice.
I finally SEEMED to have gotten it to work. I did the partition of:
SWAP 0
EXT2 2048
REMAINDER
Anyways, I did this WITHOUT the ext3 and ext4 updates. When I went into the OS, the App2SD is enabled and the SD card mounts fine.
Hopefully this will continue to work. Any1 know what the problems are without updating to ext4?

back-up your card
download Clockwork Recovery MOD from the market
buy the pro version because this guy is a genius*
+you might have to in order to partition idk
click partition memory card (something like that)
i clicked 512MB then 256MB for the second option.
works amazingly

Do you have a linux distro handy?
if so, you can use Gparted to create the partitions. You might need a microSD adapter though, as it seems to have trouble finding the mount point if it is in the phone.

Before upgraded to gingerbread ROM, it was 2.2.1 where there is a app name "link2sd" free from market, which it mount ext2 partition of sdcard and move per apps apk file to sdcard, of ext2 partition, this is more flexible then Darktremor.
Where with Darktremor, the external sdcard will never able to hot remove from phone and plug it back. Which make external sdcard pointless. remove sdcard card will kill / reboot the phone, given without sdcard, phone can not start up. Also slow performance issues.
Where link2sd allow you select large apk only link to external sdcard, when unplug sdcard the phone still works without reboot / halt.

I found so many noobs here in ace forum and so little developers and I want to help you. I come from optimus one forum and i like to help.
You need a custom recovery to create an ext partition and to make darktremor a2sd to worked. Amonra or clockworkmod recovery is the best. Then create an ext partition whether ext2, 3 or 4 then flash dta2sd from the darktremor a2sd thread here in xda(search it). The latest ver is 2753 beta 04.
Remember, without ext partition the dta2sd will not worked.
To check if your a2sd is working, download terminal emulator, press su then enter then type a2sd check.
Or download titanium backup agd check if it says a2sd space=???
Or the best way to check is by a2sdgui app, it is a official app from the dta2sd itself. If it says apps are on sd, then your a2sd worked. And if you guys still reducing memory even after moving apps to sd via a2sd gui app, its time to put the dalvik cache to your sdcard.
Fuh, thats a lot of writing on my phone. I love to help because i will buy galaxy gio soon.
Or maybe you guys should take a look at optimus one forum and learn how to make a custom kernel and rom there. Theres a very good thread on guiding how to build a custom rom and kerne. Im pretty surprise so many noobs here. Like i said i really like to help to improve this community

What is the usefulness of an ext3 partition on the SD memory for applications?
Can anyone tell me an accurate guide to follow the procedure?
No one knows how to help me?
I think you will not need it.
ext3 earlier used for app2sd, but now almost all custom roms have native app2sd = means that you don' t have to make a own partition
correct me if im wrong
Blacksony
I'm starting to think that there is no use to format the SD to ext3..
U can make a partition in your SD for example of 1 gb EXT3 only for apps, you can make it with minitool partition wizard home edition (its free)
In ext3 the apps is fully saved in the sd (.apk, dalvik cache and data) and you can liberate more space in the disk than app2sd.
if u don't understand say me jaja my english is poor and i talk like a tarzan ! xD

Hello,
I've installed ICS now without any problems, but after installing the data2sd script and then rebooting my phone gets stuck in the boot animation. Even though it's very beautifull eyecandy it really isn't doing much for me.
I did a full wipe! Clear data/factory reset, Clear dalvick cash, etc. Also Task 29 and used HD2 toolkit to create 250MB system partiton with 5MB cache
First I formatted my SD card (8GB class 10) with MiniTool Partition Wizard 7 completely as FAT32 then I partitioned it (with CWM recovery 4.0.0.0) to 2048MB EXT3 with 256MB Swap, formatted that partition again in MiniTool to EXT3
Then I flashed the ROM (NexusHD2-IceCreamSandwich Beta6) to my device without any problem. Booted ICS, rebooted into recovery and flashed Data2SD installer wich didn't give any errors either.
Booted again and now it's stuck in bootscreen, I've waited for at least 45 to 60 minutes before removing the battery and try everything again all over, but with an EXT4 partition just like Yank555 did.
I followed the instructions from this post without flashing APP2SD Killer first since that causes the market to 'hang on app install'
I know there are people how got it to work so it must be something I did wrong! Can anyone give me some good advice?
BTW FYI, I did previously use TyphooN Gingerbread 2.3.3 CM7 A2SD with 1GB EXT partition without any problems...
Hi,
For me it seems you're doing it right...
Your ext4 partition IS a primary partition ? I suppose yes, since CWM will do it that way when you use it to partition your SD card.
Just to be sure, you did reformat the ext3 partion to ext3, or the swap ? I don't know how DATA2SD will react to finding 2 "sd-ext" partitons (more than one ext2/3/4 partiton), never tried that before... If you don't intend to use any swap, you'd rather leave that one out in CWM (choose 0Mb)...
JP.
PS: If you want to use swap (hard swap on a swap partition) I can explain to you how to do that. If you want to do it using a swapfile (once DATA2SD is up & running, you can have a look here).
Tanks for your reply. I don't have much time this weekend due to Christmas shopping and everything But I determent to get this to work! And I won't stop till I do. I'm using this ROM for every day and I just need more space. I found there are more people with the same issue as me, so when I get it to work I'll post my findings in the main development threat as well. But I'll make sure to give you all the credit that is due...
Fixed it! Did had to use sort of a "work-around" but it's working and it's all good! That's most important! If anyone else is looking for the solution for this problem, this is what I used and what works for me!

Please give thanks where they are due, that is to the original poster offcourse and not me!
The fixed work-around is App2SD rite? I think it will be good if we can get Data2SD working. I think the latter is faster.
I also read some managed to get Data2Ext working in Tytung ICS Beta7 already. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403710

I have a SD card partition of 1024 MB and 32 MB swap. I can install 500 apps . So I guess these values are more than enough

1. nand backup via CWM or Amon_RA recovery
2. don't use ROM Manager (EVER for ANYTHING), either make the partition via recovery or via the built in tools

Yeah, 1024 goes a long way but if you got a big SD card you might want to go for twice that and swap isn't just not needed, it's not even used unless you make a separate script to use it which ISN'T included in most roms.
Which kind of built in tools?

Tar will only backup what is inside the system partition . For a more complete backup one needs backup of all partitions and boot loader with recovery. It possible only by a tool like CWM.
Also for a phone with 512 MB RAM one doesn't need swap. It mai actually degrade the performance.
My Idea ZTE Blade has only 256MB RAM, I am using CM7.2 . In manage applications total of free plus used is only 128MB. So I enabled swap using m2sd, it's 256MB, actual usage varies from 80MB to 130MB.
My phones performance is greatly improved.

1. CWM will use TAR to make the backups so it's the same thing, to make a clone of the partition you'll need to use cc.
2. It won't degrade the performance in any scenario, it MAY be unnecessary and unused though.
3. That's not swap, that's using an extended partition to store data, what you're looking at is internal storage and more specifically the internal partition /data

1. Ok, new learning for me.
2. Good to know this. I was bit worried initially with my 256MB swap size. As I saw 0 or 32 MB swap in many posts. But after 2 weeks I confirm that it was the best thing I did for my Blade. Yes it was even better than using sd card's ext4 partition for more space. Low RAM was a bit serious issue for me than low space.
3. I know swap and ext partition are different. I have 256MB swap and 2 GB ext-4 on my class 4 16GB.
Also understand that using m2sd one can mount /data on ext-4 (r mount) and /sdext on internal nand.

3. Just nitpicking but the way it works is to mount data to /sd-ext/data, /sd-ext is just the mount point for your ext partition (which may be ext2, ext3 or ext4 depending on how you configured it during partitioning and how you mount it). Depending on how you do this you can have data, app, dalvik-cache and app-private mounted to /sd-ext/[folder] (this is the common way of using it when you use my script and S2E).

May I know your script name?
Using your script which of above should be moved last, I mean with swap already might take a portion of sd card i/o and hence i fear, may make overall speed very slow.
Or for enabling all of them should i upgrade to faster sd card?
Currently I am happy with swap and apps on sd card, rest all on int. nand.

S2E-Swap-Jinxxed.zip is the name, you flash it via recovery. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54672755/S2E-Swap-Jinxxed.zip
It's basically a set of init.d scripts for proper configuration of swap, mounting of sd-ext and the S2E application to move apps, data and cache (you can choose what you want to move and what you want to leave on your internal nand data partition) to sd-ext.
It works on all roms that don't have S2E support from the get go including all ICS variants and JB.

To deactivate mounts2sd-4.6.2 script and use your script.
I did following after getting your answer as PM.
I deleted 10mounts2sd script from \system\etc\init.d\ .
While observing S2E-Swap-Jinxxed.zip, I realized that it contained s2e.apk in /system/app.
So I actually installed s2e from from market to get latest version.
Then to enable swap and other optimizations, I added following lines in begining of 20userinit script present in /etc/init.d .
mount -o remount,noatime,nodiratime,relatime,barrier=0,nobh /system
mount -o remount,noatime,nodiratime,relatime /data
swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
So I got what I wanted and also learnt many things in the process.
Also experimented with /etc/sysctl.conf by adding vm.swappiness=50 (initially 70).

I backed up my Blade using the latest ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 .
CWM backup up saying done, but with a message.
It said it did not backup up /sd-ext or external ext2/3/4 partition.
So I was worried to use app-to-ext scripts or programs.
Now I successfully used tar to backup sd-ext and restore it on a faster (class 4 to 6) sd card.
But I would like know if there is any new version of CWM for Blade 6.0.1.2 with or without touch, which backs up ext2/3/4 without any issues.
If yes, I would upgrade my CWM.
It saves time to use CWM, compared to tar.
Thanks in advance.
