Anyone else experiencing this? My Verizon 7.7 has unreliable tethering on FoxFi, Wifi Tether, and the native tethering app. They all start up fine, but after about 10 min. the tablet's data connection starts to go in and out. Once I turn off tethering, the data connection becomes stable again. My Thunderbolt has no issues on Wifi Tether using the same SIM card.

My tablet is perfect on stock ics wifi tether, purchased in antwerp belgium, used in united kingdom.
CM9 port is nice but no wifi tether option, so using stock rom which I think is a nice job from samsung, transformed this device.

Hmmm...maybe it's just an issue with the Verizon version.

Bad luck, they probably added something in to make the experience poor and deter you from sharing the connection, in my experience best to steer clear of large controlling american companies if possible,

Just curious, what is the advantages of using external tethering apps over stock tethering option in Galaxy tab?
BTW i use stock bluetooth tethering and found no issue.

After upgraded to official ICS, i cant do a tethering anymore. My gtab is bought from malaysia. Anyone experiencing this also?
Similar problem with rooted 6800 after a clean ICS install. Tethering is working fine, but only until the screen shuts off. After that the stock tethering shuts also off.
Tried other apps like Wifi Tether and Barnacle, but have the same problem. After switching on, Barnacle says that it is interfering with Wifi Manager, whatever it means.
I have no task killer
I use usb tether on my gt-6800 running HC.
I sometimes get losses of Internet connectivity but I'm not sure if it is down to the signal where I use the tether. Eg. I was getting it a lot a few weeks ago but recently it's been pretty stable.
The lease on the IP seems to need renewing every hour and it's often around then that problems can happen.

You guys are talking about your phone dropping your connection I cant even get mine to connect I use BARNACEL and OPEND GARDEN I even tried using EASY TETHER to my laptop and sharing my wifi with my built in INTEL. How did you guys get connected?
While I haven't done much tethering with the fascinate, I did use the "wifi tether" app on my incredible to share my connection with a PS3 successfully. Also, I seem to remember the built-in tethering working as well (if you're on CM7/MIUI). Actually, I just saw something the other day about needing to do a fix for the stock android tethering to work, so I don't know if that's a good option. Try wifi tether.
Has this been fixed yet or how would go about making it work?

Doesn't work and messes up the built in tether. As far as I know if you've used the wireless tether, the only way to get the built in tether to work is to reflash.
Built in tether is located here:
Menu>Settings>Wireless & Networks>Tethering and Hotspot.
Wireless Tether doesn't work...have to use the native tethering app, or use barnacle tethering.
Native tethering works.

Can someone tell me what's the benefit of wireless tether over the native tethering?
I got the native tether to work thanx guys

^^What got it working again?
As far as WT being better, it has more options like being able to see who's connected and keep track of how much data you're using. But it doesn't work so it's not better
Wireless Tether will let you do so with 4G as well, native hotspot won't do 4G with the hack.
Wait, native tether doesn't do 4G? So I've been turning on 4G and tethering for nothing?
Is there a trick to getting the tether to work on 4g? I can connect but no data transfers to my laptop? 3g works just fine.
It works really well for me

I didn't want to start another thread, so I'll post here.
Has this been remedied? The native tether hasn't worked for me either. I've wiped data/dalvik/cache and still nothing.
Suggestions?
No problem with mine. Maybe its just the 4g service?

...4g native wireless tether works for me on the last released nightly, however, is useless for me to use as it is constantly disconnecting ( I tether to xbox)...I have no problems with sense roms as I just got done with gears 3 for 4 hrs straight. If I switch back to cm7, it'll disconnect within 5 minutes...hope it gets fixed soon cus I reeaaalllyyy miss my cm...
4g tether works fine with a sense ROM, but I really like CM7. It's worked for the first day, then it stopped. Would get failed error codes. Wipe, uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reflash CM7 reboot hasn't done anything to fix the problem.
I've tried wireless tether 2.0.5 --> 3.1
None have worked. They would start, but get hung up at (download) speed: .4kbs and .1kbs (upload)
Does your native tether turn on after 'wireless tether'? Mine does, so on the top notification bar it shows both running. But it doesn't connect.
I'd like to get back to using CM7 (my favorite so far) but I can't since using the tether is how I get internet access at home.
Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046764
works for me ever since i did it.
Tether, 3G and 4G has always worked for me.
So all of our phones with Wifi hotspot features create an ADHOC connection which Honeycomb does not support. Same goes with Bluetooth, no DUN. Google what the hell? Ya ya,carriers this and carriers that but what about people paying for hotspot features on the phone. I have customers that I need to setup to pair with the TF but it seems nothing will work without rooting and that can be phone specific. So the TF is great as long as you are close to a WIFI connection is supports?
If I'm missing something someone please fill me in.

Are you rooted?
Are you simply pairing or using another app on your phone?
Can you run through your connection steps?

I am using the hotspot feature on my Evo, and I've been tethering to it at work since the day I got my Transformer. I'm not doing anything special, just turning on the hotspot and letting the TF connect. Now, my Evo is rooted with a ROM that "unlocks" the hotspot functionality so I'm not paying extra, and I'm not using the Wireless Tether app, but it's the same concept.

The hotspot feature on your ROM is supporting a true wifi connection and not peer to peer adhoc. I can't always root customers phones.
~DC
I may be misunderstanding how it works, but this isn't a wireless tether baked into the ROM, it's the built-in Sprint hotspot feature that I'm using, just unlocked so I don't have to pay extra. If someone was paying for the hotspot feature on Sprint, they wouldn't need root, but maybe this is only the case with Sprint's implementation.
i was able to do both wifi and bluetooth tethering. took me a while to figure out, (since i've never done it before, less due to the difficulty of doing it)
assuming the phone supports Bluetooth tethering, it should always work.
I have a DroidX and I can tether using the built in stock Hotspot feature or with Bluetooth. However, I can't tether using an ad hoc connection because I get an error stating that the device doesn't support ad hoc connections...
So, it is definitely device specific and it will be something the carriers remove as many report being able to do so with root (my device is rooted and I can't connect via ad hoc - although, I haven't d/l or tried out the pdaNet app).
I will also add that the bluetooth tethering has worked MUCH better than the wifi - easier/faster to connect, runs pretty fast, and my phone doesn't overheat as much....
Works fine with my evo. The Evo has proper infrastructure wifi hotspot.
Maybe the users need to update their phones?
I went into a store to try a tf and there was no internet so I turned on my WiFi hotspot on my sgsII and it worked perfectly fine, not sure if that's the same as you're asking but that works.

a lot of clarification
Hi all,
I need your help, understanding ... well everything about wifi/TF/WM6.5/adhoc and whatever the other connection is?
I don't think of myself as a noob, but to be honest I'm lost with the wifi on the TF. So here it goes: I have TF and HD2. Under WM6.5 I can't get the TF to see the shared internet through the "wifi router" application on the phone. But then I run a custom Desire HD ROM and this one (can't remember the application) shares and gives access to the TF?!?!
First off, which is which? Which is adhoc and which is infrastructure? And what is the difference (sorry i did look on the internet, but that got me confused even more because I could not see any difference). Are you saying that a standard (not rooted Android) will have the same problem? I was thinking of switching to an android phone so that I can get the easy sharing option, but if I have to root a brand new phone????
Any help will be appreciated,
rio
Easy way to tether off a rooted phone.
Install one of the older versions of wireless tether that supports bluetooth.
Turn on the bluetooth DUN on wireless tether.
Hit ok when it asks to turn on Bluetooth and make discoverable.
On the transformer go to settings-wireless-bluetooth
Scan for your device and pair.
Once paired you should see a little wrench next to your device, click on it
Under Profiles, it should show tethering with a checkbox. Click this and in a few seconds Wireless tether should buzz its connected and off you go.
I've been able to tether my transformer like this since out of the box.
Edit - BTW I've tried this with PDAnet and other non rooted tehtering programs, and I couldn't get it to work with those options. Just FYI
the difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure is the way devices communicate.
infrastructure is kinda like the way we send messages via the post office. we send it to a central place, then it figures out how to deliver the message. this is how true routers operate
ad-hoc is peer-to-peer. imagine passing notes back in elementary school.
( Do you like me [yes] [no] )
some phones comes with a tethering app without having to root, but this typically requires you to pay extra fee to your carrier ($30 for sprint)
if you don't want to pay that, then you have to root your phone to either get a rom that already supports infrastructure mode, or download an app that does. [ ie Wifi Tether ]

You are right. I put Honeycomb 3.1 in the title but forgot to mention in the OP if anyone heard that 3.1 would have support for DUN or Ad Hoc.
Sorry for any confusion I might have caused

Hello,
Is anyone else having this problem? When I tether the Internet connection off my phone (wifi tethering) my browser and rom manager's Internet connection work fine, but Gapps, the market, Dropbox and several other apps will not connect to the Internet... Does anyone know the cause of this?
Did you enable "restrict background data"? I know Play Store doesn't work for me when I restrict that.
Otherwise everything works fine tethered to my Galaxy Nexus.

I did not unless it does this by default... I'm tethering 3G, not 4g... Could it just be my 3G isn't strong enough signal?
This Q&A thread is ridiculous! You ask a question and your post is bounced back 3 pages before u can get a response! And do Devs even cruise this thread looking to answer questions? It's all just fellow average users! BUMP

I can't really answer your question, but I have ( or had) a similar issue. ( Plus it will bump the thread up As you know, WiFi tethering will rape your phones battery. My HTC Wildfire S battery sucks ass to begin with, so its a must it is plugged in if I'm going to tether for more than 15 mins. I tried an app called FoxFi, because it's got rave reviews and it has Bluetooth tethering...and compared to WiFi tether, BT tethering uses hardly any battery. Well, I could save over 50℅ battery by using BT tether, and I was so excited. Until I tried to use ANYTHING BUT the web browser. Internet was fine, but everything else just stated "no network connection". No Google Now, no Asphalt 7, and no YouTube. What a let down. Maybe I'll look into it tonight and let you know if I find anything. The battery savings are worth me looking into it.
Much appreciated! I'm hearing that people with 4g phones aren't getting this issue... Perhaps the connection just isn't enough for the market and Gapps? I actually kind of doubt this because browsing is very snappy and I've been able to download large files with relatively good speed
Ive been trying to use tethering to my laptop and its to the point of unusable, im getting 56k speedsi if that while a speed test from my phone im getting 15-30 down and 2-10 up.
I'm using wifi hotspot ive tried both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. I have also tried the USB Tether but my windows 10 doesnt like it for some reason. Im on verizon with a shared Data plan that includes the Hotspot feature. anyone have any ideas
Thanks
No idea, but I've tethered to a Windows 7 laptop. Performance was good, so I never bothered to check the speed.

I am having same issue. I use T-mobile and my OnePlusOne never had this issue. I would go to gym and just turn on my hotspot and watch Netflix without issue in the past. With the MXPE, it's like being on 56k modem. Anyone else having this issue?
I tether almost everyday due to terrible speeds at work. I'm on Verizon unlimited and I do not experience any speed issues. I unlocked but I made no changes for tether as that worked out of the box
I tried Bluetooth tethering which works fine without any issue so it's not exactly a carrier issue. I also verify with t-mobile that they didn't turn of my hotspot feature by accident.
I have the same issue on TMO US. With my Nexus 5, I had fast, dependable tethering. Now with the MXPE my tethering is painfully slow and flaky. Not good at all when on the road.
I'm having the same issue. I just upgraded from a Droid MAXX that had fantastic tethering speeds, and now on my new MXPE it's like being on dialup. Has anyone come up with a solution? I've been loving the phone so far, but tethering is too important to me and I won't be able to keep the phone if I can't figure it out.
I've had this happen twice. A reboot fixed it both times.
I've had this happen more than twice... Hoping the devs can come up with a fix

I'm on VZW ULDP and mine can be painfully slow at times as others have indicated. Usually a reboot will rectify it. But that's not really convenient. I have it set up to start tether automatically when I start my car (bluetooth connection activated via tasker) so I can automatically get traffic to work or home on my z ultra.

I had my first tethering session yesterday. I am on Verizon. A customer I was meeting with needed email access on his Surface Pro and there was no free WiFi where we met. I went in and setup a portable WiFi hotspot. We were both quite impressed with the speed. Keep in mind, this is the only time I have tried it but there were no issues.
hello i just got my moto x pure and i was trying to tether everything seems to be ok until i try use internet in my macbook and is not trasmitting data, same thing happened with nexus 6 i found that when lte it stops transfering data, this is so stupid this is an unlocked phone and it wont let me tether?????? wtf........im using simple mobile unlimited 4g LTE ,i was using an Asus ZenFone 2 and tether without issues, thanks.
This happens almost every time I use the hotspot. Rebooting usually fixes it - temporarily. I'm really hoping that marshmallow has better hotspot performance on the MXP
I get this issue... It's not exactly slow speeds, more like a spotty connection. I use Remote Desktop to do my work, which should still technically run smoothly (albeit slowly) on a 56k connection. I am connecting to a Windows NT server, so I am only using 16-bit graphics quality to reduce the strain on my bandwidth. We didn't even have anything that much faster than T1 at that time, so I can't imagine a Windows NT server running slowly on a modem connection. I noticed a couple things that were strange, so I think there may be settings on my phone causing it but I cannot be sure.
The connection fast when I test the tethering at home, but when I am out the connection constantly drops. I cannot even get a stable connection to my server to do any work. This is not when I am in the car moving from cell tower to cell tower, this is if I am at a place without WiFi, such as my dentist's office.
Chrome gets stuck at "Resolving host..." when trying to visit any websites. This would lead me to believe it is a DNS error, however this does not explain the connection instability with Remote Desktop, and using the address's IP address does not seem to fix this, strangely enough.
I am on a VZW grandfathered unlimited plan, using the TruPure ROM. I did not want to move away from stock, but I did it in an attempt to fix my tethering issues. So far nothing has worked.
