I was hoping to get some creative ideas on how I can get my hands on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy SIII. I am eligible for an upgrade on 5/13/13 but I would love to hear about possible workarounds that could get me that phone a lot earlier.

Sell your kidney on the black market then buy one.
Hey you said creative!!!!!
This has probably been stated before but you could invent a time machine and travel into the future where your contract is up and then get the S3. Then travel back with your new S3 ready to use.

I thought you're only allowed to do this for the iphone
Sell your current phone and buy a new one full price from your carrier.
Alternatively, buy a used one from someone here on xda who will inevitably feel the need to upgrade to the Developer Edition, despite us having custom kernels and custom ROMs working on our consumer models.
I wouldn't trust Craigslist, I've seen quite a few threads about stolen phones bought on Craigslist getting blacklisted.

Not sure about in the US but up here in Canada with our retarded 3 year contracts heres what I did (not my first time). I get a second phone line on a new contract for the new phone, do a number swap ($20 carrier charge) post on Kijiji (craigslist) looking for someone to take over my contract (carried the 2 phones for a total of 6 days). I just got rid of my Galaxy S2 (i9100) NOT LTE or HD that was on 2 1/2 contract by paying someone $50 to take over the contract. I would have gotten $300 or less for the phone outright which is no wheres near the cost of the S3 outright or the early term on my old contract ($550). The time before that I had an iPhone 4 with 18 month contract left on Rogers I was looking for someone to take over and them pay me for it (asked $75), they just wanted the contract (no idea why) so they took over the 18 month contract for free and left me with a iPhone 4 off contract I turn around and sold for $350.
If you're not under contract with Verizon and really just want the S3 I'd say look at other providers if you're into or want to at all mod your device - load custom roms and such...The VZW S3 BL is locked down, but if you have to stay with VZW, dont bother using your upgrade, buy the Dev edition...yea it costs full price but it'll for sure have a better resale value later on as opposed to the locked one, if you just want the phone and are fine with touchwiz then just buy it at a store.
If you're on a family plan, use another lines upgrade?

I'd be willing... but I am certainly not trying to pay the full $599. I'd really want it for the subsidized price.

This was discussed quite a bit in the Verizon Pre-Order thread ...
Add a line and get the SIII. Then, call Verizon Customer Care and downgrade the line to a feature phone (which you probably already have lying around or can purchase for minimal outlay) with no add-ons. Then, switch the SIII to your current line, which I presume already has a data package attached to it.
[Another poster told VCC that the phone was originally for his grandmother, but that she was overwhelmed by the smartphone and preferred a barebones phone.]
Surprisingly, Verizon will allow you to both keep the phone and downgrade the new line. I know, I know ... it defies reason. But apparently, it has been done. In any event, you are stuck with the additional line and all associated costs (.. $9.99+fees/month ..) for the duration of the two year contract.
If you do the math, the cost of a subsidized SIII 32gb obtained this way (over the two year contract period) = $249 + ($9.99/month)(24) = $489, and with taxes/fees/surcharges, will likely end up well over $500. In all reality, you should be able to find one for outright sale for about the same amount.
Or, better yet, wait until the quadcore version becomes available.

No telling. Our carriers ruin everything. Could take six months. Mine is on the way to Texas!!
U.S. looks like it's coming to AT&T, according to FCC documents
According to FCC documents filed, it appears Samsung has at least applied for approval for AT&T ... http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-galaxy-note-headed-to-usa-on-att-says-fcc-30184411/
My hope is it will be here 1st or 2nd quarter of next year with AT&T, since that's who our family plan is with.
Has anyone heard any updates to this, since that was back on September 30th.
I have a 2 year old iPhone 3GS that I would love to replace with this.
All the best !!!

How to tell when a Samsung phone will be coming out in the US:
Start with the European launch date and add the number of days you can reasonable wait for a launch. Add 6-8 months and they might be ready to release it.
So it sounds more reasonable to expect a 2nd quarter U.S. launch since it was announced in September in Europe. I sure hope it's sooner though. It clearly blows away every device I've ever had, including the hyped-up iPhone !!!
I'm going to try and wait till May at the latest, since the warranty on my iPhone 4 is up on June. I hate not being protected...So I'll get the Note from the UK if it's not released by then, then just get a square trade warranty on it.
Unless it is an "iphone" don't expect any release from at&t within 6 months of it being released to the rest of the world. AT&T sucks at releasing non iJunk.
Walk into one with a blank stare, tell them you are looking for a smart phone and
I'd bet you 100 bucks they will START with the iJunk.
When the SGS2 was FINALLY released, I walked into a corporate store to look at
one, and the sales drone said "I think we have one, but I don't care for android, I like the iPhone". Well, when you have sales people who think like that, what do you expect them to push you into? Plus, when AT&T sold their souls to get the iPhone, you can bet there was some under the table deal that keeps something that would stomp the iPhone into dust. And you can bet there is probably more profit on iJunk/accessories than any other phone.
I quit buying on contract with at&t last year with the Streak. It's expensive as hell to buy one out right, but, over the long run, you come out ahead. Plus, I'm still on the unlimited data...as long as I'm a good boy, or until at&t changes their mind again.
Thanks guys, but you bumped my 13 day old thread...

Not True.
That's only true if the ETF($325 smart phone's) plus the contract price is higher then the retail price.
For the iPhone....The Retail price for the 4S 16GB is $650. So you are going to pay $200 on contract, and say you cancel the next month....that's a total of $525. Even if you include a $100 bill for the first month, that's still cheaper then buying a off-contract iPhone 4S!
It would make some sense if you got a lower monthly plan for not being on a contract, but fat chance on that. Instead, it's better to just buy on contract and let your potential ETF decrease by $10/month. When you want to leave ATT or get another phone, just sell it and buy another, you will be better off. The ETF is just there because the carrier is paying for a good portion of the phone for you.
This is still true for most Dumb Phones that are Free on contract. They can run $200 retail, and the ETF is $175..it's still cheaper to go with the contract, once again your monthly fee is the same, and the ETF decreases after each month on the network.
Now. I'm off contract on my iPhone 4. But that's because I get a cheaper monthly rate by being off contract. I use a iPad data only SIM in my iphone, which is the $30 Unlimited deal. The ETF after 16 months was $175...which is the cost for less then 3 months of service. I would be paying the Unlimited data sim anyway just to keep it...So this way I save a ton of cash.
Now if ATT get the Note...that's a $800 device! If ATT only asked $400 on contract that would still be quite the deal, as the Contract price plus the ETF would be $725...still cheaper then the unlocked retail version! And since ATT is what I would be using here in the US anyway, it really makes no sense for me to get the unlocked version. Now...if the Locked version does not have LTE, and does not work with my iPad SIM as my iPhone does, I may just bite the bullet and get the Internationale version anyway, that way I can go on using my data only device.(I use google voice for text and talkatone for voice, android has a Voip gmail google voice client as well)

Where would be the best and cheapest place to get a Note?
Has anyone ever used ... electroprise.com on Manhattan before? ... http://electroprise.com/samsung-galaxy-note-gt-n7000-gsm-hsdpa-quadband-unlocked-p-2911.html. I'm up for an upgrade, with AT&T, anyways and they say they have a Note for $399, with a plan, which seems pretty good (cost varies with the type of plan).
If I sell my iPhone 3GS for $150-200 then it's only about $200-250 extra for the phone. Has anyone heard of a great place(s) or offer(s) for the Note, with a plan (since I need to extend my plan anyways)?
I'm going to call electroprise.com today and see what the real deal is ... it seems too good to be true. FYI, my current intention is to wait until the Note comes to AT&T and get it for $200 possibly (it may be $400 anyways !!!), but I would have to wait 6 months, which is a total bummer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ... all the best !!!

WOW this seems too good to be true LOL. $600 off contract? $400 on contract? This phone is not even offered for a contract on any US carrier. Not sure about this one...
I just read this on androidcentral.com (2011-11-06)
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note/131663-where-buy-galaxy-note-us.html ...
"Re: Where to buy Galaxy Note for US?
You can't get the Note from a US carrier yet. You will need to order international. Many have ordered from Handtec () without issue. They are currently shipping their second batch out. They have a choice of unlocked with no network logo or for slightly less, unlocked with a network logo on boot.
You can also order from Amazon Germany or clove.co.uk
You won't be able to take advantage of the 3g or 4g network on T-Mobile with the International version of the note. It does not have the antenna and chipset for the lower frequencies used on the higher speed network. You will only get voice and 2g speed out side of Wi-Fi. The Korean version of the Note with LTE is being released very soon and will be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset (like the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile). This will likely be compatible with T-Mobile's higher speed network.
The International Note can be used with ATT HSDPA network without issue and at full speed. Some are using the unlimited pay as you go, non-smartphone plan (I think it is called gophone) with the note. I believe it is ~$50/month. Since ATT can only check the IMEI number on units it sells, you should be able to use an unlocked, international Note with this plan without having ATT change your plan to a more expensive "smartphone", limited plan.
-Alex-"
"I also found out from Wikipedia that AT&T has the following frequencies ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility ... does everyone agree with these?
Radio Frequency Summary
The following is a list of known frequencies which AT&T employs in the United States:
Frequency Protocol Class
Frequencies used on the AT&T Network 850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
850 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
1900 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
700 MHz LTE 4G"
That means AT&T should match up well with Note's frequencies ...
HSPA+ up to 21Mbps 850/900/1900/2100
4G LTE
EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900
This is just my two cent worth ... maybe I should wait for the 4G phone ... aaarrggg !!! Like I said before, any help would be appreciated.

Yeah I saw the light XD. After experiencing what the Android can do(flash, bigger screen, better customization with ROMS and kernals, etc) I don't think I can go back to an iPhone. I've been loyal to having an iPhone since the first generation, the 4s is what threw me off the ship. Now I'm thinking about picking up a Note I thinking of picking it up from this guy http://www.ebay.com/itm/140636202852?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Exchange my Galaxy for an unopened one and resell it for $450, so minus that from $750 the phone will cost me around $300.
I'm not so sure about the website you posted, I haven't seen the Galaxy Note for less than $730. But what you can do is use your upgrade to buy an iPhone 4s 16gb for $200, resell for $650, sell your iPhone 3gs for maybe $150. I see someone did something similar here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338821

WTF are you smoking that this plan makes any sense? The note is not an $800 phone, it is a $700 phone that would cost ATT much less than that (550-600) in wholesale price. So you think you are "getting a deal" when you are just getting screwed like everyone else who goes on a contract.
No answer
Well I've been calling electroprise.com pretty much all day and the phone just rings after the message and prompts, so it may be too good to be true. I let everyone know if I find out anything.

Amazon - Do you agree with the financials on this?
Does this make sense ...
• I'm due for an upgrade with AT&T, so I can buy a sealed, brand new, iPhone 4S 16GB for $200 and sell it for $500-650, based on eBay research ... for a profit of $300-450.
• It looks like I can sell my 2 year old 3GS, for $100-250
• Amazon has the Note for $769.95 ... http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Unlocked-Android-Smartphone/dp/B0061YRDX6
Therefore, I should be able to make $400-700 selling the two iPhones, then buy the Note from Amazon for $769.95. So it would cost me $70-370 total for the Note. Do you all agree with this logic, or am I missing something?
Also, does anyone know how to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich on the Note yet ... is there a good forum link on "how to"? I've never had an Android before, so this is all new to me ... sorry for my ignorance.
Thanks for any help on this.

Will the Galaxy note from India work for ATT?
specs are as follows:

3G Band 850/900/1,900/2,100
Network&Data GPRS 850/900/1,800/1,900
EDGE 850/900/1,800/1,900
3G HSPA+ 21Mbps
Regional Availability Global
Any information will be highly helpful.
thanks
Yes the galaxy Note from India will work with AT&T.
At&T uses band 850 and 1900 for 3G network.
I thought the Note may come out on ATT officially before end of the year with LTE support. Why not just wait another 1-2 months and see what happens.

I highly, highly doubt it. But if it does, I can always sell my current one and use the money to buy the AT&T version. Unless AT&T's version is crappier, in which case I'll simply be glad I enjoyed my Note for all of that time before AT&T got around to releasing one, and also appreciate how much better my international version is.
For people waiting to "cash in" their 24 month upgrade credit, the smart way to do it is to buy the most valuable for resale phone at the time (unfortunately usually an iphone) and sell it, saving the money for the phone they actually want. No point in waiting for the phone you actually want to be released unless you know it's coming soon and the resale value's high enough that with ebay/paypal fees included it wouldn't make more sense to go the other iroute.
Thoughts?

Perhaps i missed the details but I live in Long Island NY and at&t is not selling the iphone 4s without activating it. Am i supposed to buy it, activate the iphone and then use the sim card with the note? Is the iphone then locked or imei not cleared and not sell-able? My goal is to get a 2 year contract using the galaxy note, but purchase the iphone on the 2 year contract at $200 and then sell it to offset the cost of the note.

Go to an Apple Store & tell them you want to use your upgrade but dont activate it there.

It doesn't hurt anything to activate the sim card in the iphone then take it out and use it in the Note. You may have to put it in a dumbphone before the Note if you want to call in and have them switch you to the $15 unlimited dumbphone data, or you may be able to just call them, give them the Note's IMEI, and tell them it's a dumbphone (insert brand/name of dumbphone here.)
But if you want the iphone unopened/unactivated (maybe it sells for more? I don't know), you can purchase it through apple in a store or on their website, using your upgrade for the $200 price, then when it gets to the apple store tell them not to open or activate it.
Thank you Max, I do not have an upgrade as I am not an at&t customer. I am planning of going under my gf's family plan so I was looking to get a new 2 year contract under that plan. (Does that matter?) I am OK with paying all of the family plan rates and am not looking to get unlimited via other means. My main problem is I was lead to believe via many posts (not here) that getting an iphone 4s with the 2 year discount was easy and I could then sell it. at&t will not sell an iphone 4s here in LI without activating it. So, is activation what I have to do or are there other options where I could get a boxed iphone 4s (legally) and activate my note instead? However, this is another important question... If I activate a brand new iphone 4s, what do I have to do to make this phone sell-able? at&t said that I had to keep the iphone for 6 months. How do they know? Is the imei locked? Do I have to unlock it via other means or can someone just add this phone to their plan? I wish at&t was more forthcoming. I do not see why there is a problem here since I am buying the 2 year contract in the first place.

I have the original Evo4G which I got almost 2 years ago. I haven't upgraded while on Sprint so I am wondering how it works. Last time I upgraded I had Verizon so it was a new every 2 type deal where I was getting a new phone for free. I see sprint gives a $150 credit. Does that mean I have to pay $400 for the new evo lte? Can someone shed some light on this before I go to the Sprint Store as I want to get the best deal I can without them bending me over. Thanks!
Ultimately you get more than 150 off. Basically the Evo lte will cost you 199 at sprint, as will any of their top tier phones. 199 is kind of sprints Max price on upgrade or new phone.
VZW gave em free, huh? Nice.

the phone will be 199. plus some BS fees. the total comes to about 225 bucks.
thanks guys, been wondering this myself as well
If your off contract eBay it up man, spend the extra as sprint makes you go a full two years without upgrade. plus you can get an international version which I'm pretty sure comes unlocked from HTC. That's how I got my og and it was unlocked in a sealed factory box.

Plus a $30 activation fee.
Or try wirefly for 120 and then if u got AAA call them to get activation waived, if u really want to make the most of ur ur upgrade experience, call Sprint and ask if you have a Contract renewal bonus on ur account, if u do you can extend ur contract and get 50+ bucks, then go and buy a phone and sign a 2 yr contract, then 20 months latter do it again

International version won't work on sprint, and cdma devices can't be unlocked, that only works on GSM carriers I.e. T-Mobile and at&t just so you know before you go buying an unlocked international version of a device and then find out after you have it that it's not gonna work on your carrier in any way, shape or form

Besides not being tied to a contract, what are some of the benefits to buying unlocked phone - freedom to choose from multiple carriers? I live in ATL, and Sprint is about to release their LTE here, so my thought was to wait for the G S III when it's released.
Activation fees are $36. Check out their discount program, credit unions waive it.

About the unlocked question, sprint has to load every esn into a database unlocked Intl or GSM only phones are not and therefore cannot be activated. If you buy a sprint phone on ebay make sure the esn is clear before buying. Sprint will be able to check the status for you.

Having never gotten a "brand new" phone before, I am curious about the timeline... I'm shocked we still don't know when the phone will be released - how hard is it to figure out when you want to release a phone?
So, with my impatience leading the charge here, how long was it between the EVO 4G pre-order and the actual release date? How about with the EVO 3D? Thanks everyone! I wish they would tell you upon pre-ordering.
Sprints upgrade discount is a complete lie!!!! Sprint customers who's contract just ran out will pay the same price as anyone just walking in and buying the phone. Now Verizon actually gives their customers, who's contract just ran out, and a discount. Verizon discount comes off the 2year contract price, and so you pay less than others starting a new contract. Sprint just makes the normal 2year contract discount $150 less than it really is, but then adds in your $150 upgrade discount; so the 2year contract price comes out to be the same. How ridiculous!!
When I left Verizon for Sprint 2 years ago I was excited that their 2year discount was more than Verizon's.. Just recently found out that I was wrong though, and you get NO 2year discount from Sprint in actuality.... If Sprint didn't have unlimited data, cheaper monthly plans, and carry better phones, then I might go back to Verizon. And sadly, as of lately Sprint is the best at getting in phones, AT&T seems to be getting the best devices for the last 6 months or so... AT&T coverage is a joke in my area, and I'd probably pay twice as much as I do with Sprint every month, or they would be my current choice of carrier.....
I am from Canada and I'm with bell. I see all this people ordering phones for the price of 680$ and i can't help to ask myself if all those ppl are not on any contract. Because if you are in a 2 or 3 year contract you'll pay 200$ for the phone....So. If you are in a contract and are ordering the s3 please post your reasons please.
One of the reasons can very well be that there is a good flow of money and allows to get phones every year

Yep.. I hear ya. I just recently ran my contact out. Bought my GS2 for full price and didn't resign. Now I'm buying the GS3 with no contract. (I was considering switching to Verizon.. that's why I ran my contract out) but now I'm gonna stick around for a little bit. Oh and I happen to have the money right now, and you only live once so I'm going for it!
Though.. it wasn't easy telling my gf how much I paid

Cuz my current phone is absolutely uselessly unreliable but if i cancel my contract i will lose my unlimited data which is basically impossible to get now for the price i am paying.

You can try getting your current contract phone unlocked, sell it, then buy the sg3 (or a newer phone in general) to replace it.
In general contracts are more expensive than their prepaid alternatives (that's the point of having them). They also ensure that you're locked-in. This is why getting something that does not have you extend your contract is preferable. At the end of the day, however, the only way to tell if it's worth it is to do the math and determine whether that's a price you're willing to pay for a $400 discount.
Youhit it right on the head.....a good flow of money allows me to buy 2 to 3 phones a year. so i bought the Note Lte, then im getting the international SGSIII, i will then switch back to LTE when the Note 2 comes out later this year I hope.

I'm in the UK on giffgaff. The network gives you payback for referrals and community help. It's paying me a fair bit this way, more than enough to cover the cost of the phone and topups
In Austria there are some really cheap bargain-contracts where you pay ~10€ per month for EVERYTHING (1gb, 1000 texts, 1000 minutes). These contracts also don't come with the obligation to stay at the network-provider for 24 months or so. The only thing: With these contracts you don't get an expensive phone cheaper, you need to buy it for the full price on the market.
But all in all you're on the cheaper side with these bargain contracts than with the normal contracts, because with normal contracts you pay about 20 to 50€ for the same service! If you calculate for 24 months, it's actually a bit cheaper when you buy the phone on the market for full price. With the advantage that you don't have any obligation to stay at this provider.
I'm in the US under AT&T, my contract is up in June. The reasons I'm getting the Int. S3 are:
- Won't be released in the US until later in the Summer
- Won't have to extend my AT&T contract
- Retain my AT&T phone upgrade discount (in case any come out I want)
- US version will be inferior to the Int. in many ways IMO (other than LTE)
- higher re-sale value
Those are the main reasons.
This is a re-post of something i posted up on another S3 thread:
yyhd said:
meeh, i dont mind waiting, but some of us have more than 1 spare phone available. others dont. so in that case, i'm right there with ya.
but on the other hand, $10 AT&T medianet is a no-brainer for me.. I'll buy an iPhone or an AT&T HOX on AT&T upgrade/contract for $199 and sell it on XDA MP or Craigslist for $600. That's $400 profit. International SGS3 is $700, less the $400 for the sold AT&T HOX. That's $300 out of pocket for an international SGS3.
Then take AT&T's 3gb data plan of $30 per month, multiply that by 24 and I get $720. VERSUS AT&T's medianet unlimited data plan for $10 per month, multiply by 24 and I get $240.
$720 minus $240 is $480. Take $480 and apply that towards the $300 you have left on the SGS3 after i've sold my AT&T HOX. I'm still out on top $180 (unless i did my math wrong, which im prone to do often lol)
This is my rational for getting an international SGS3.

I'm on Sasktel. Sasktel chooses to shaft it's user base again and again.
What's different now? Oh yeah. COMPETITION! I can pop over to Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Koodo...but that damn contract...that's the pain.
So, I figure when it comes out, I can buy either the bell OR sasktel version outright, slap it on Sasktel, and wait until next year to move.
I'm seriously debating the Expansys one though. If I pre-order a 16GB right now, it will be mine in no time at all.
That way...come September 2013, I can move, get a new phone for my wife for cheap (her needs aren't nearly the same as mine), get whatever latest greatest then, and turn around and sell my still amazing SGS3 for $400-$500 bucks, and my new contract didn't cost me a cent.
Because people don't want to be tied into contracts. In the UK 24 months seems the norm where as as few years ago 12 month contracts where widely available.
2 years is a long time, especially if the network you are on has poor signal and such. Most plans have poor amounts of data, but the likes of Three offer unlimited data for £34pm and free phone, however signal can be an issue on Three. And I myself have terrible speeds previously on Three.
So buying outright and then a sim only route does not tie you down, you can sell 12 months down the line and get half your money back if the phone value holds, it'll be worth more than say 2 years down the line. This method does work out more expensive but it's worth it if you keep updating all the time.
Im getting the international version because I think ATT is the devil reincarnated and I hear good things about T-Mobile but Im not sure I want to sign a 2year contract with them since Im already signed with Sprint. The only thing that makes me weary of pulling the trigger on the pre-order is I just ordered the Evo 4g LTE and my money is tied up with that and Im not sure if the US version is getting the 2gb of RAM like the Japanese version. Im just not sure wich I would rather have Quad Core Exynos or Duals core S4 with 2gb or Ram. Plus I plan on stepping up my international travel game this year and it would be nice to have a phone that I would be able to just pop a sim card in and no hassle.
Despite its poor software and being unlocked anyway im still keeping this current phone just for media playback.
I use it to play tunes from samba shares on a wifi harddrive between bands (i do sound) cuz its way more portable than a laptop but it means i cant really use the phone at all while im working. Bit of an oversight selling my previous one when i got this really.

I have seen so many S3 owners saying they used their upgrade to get this phone, but this phone wasn't even released until 7/10/12, which was only 21 months ago, so how are so many getting to upgrade early?
I don't know about anyone else, but I have unlimited data and pay full retail. Anyone in that situation can buy a phone whenever they want.
Have you tried calling and asking for an early updgrade, I am guessing if you call once or twice, you will have success if you lock in. Obviously, people have additional lines, etc., and use work arounds to get upgrades.

I looked at that, but it seems awfully expensive in the end. What is the monthly cost on the S5 with Edge? Do they keep the phone even if you do pay enough to cover the full price after 2 years?

If you wait every 2 years it probably wouldn't be worth it, but if you upgrade every year it's not really that bad. It's about 25 bucks a month extra, so over the course of the year, it would cost $300. Considering you probably pay around $250 for a new phone when it is time to upgrade, your really only paying $50 more a month to be able to upgrade every year. You cannot keep your phone for early edge. But after that, I'm not sure.
I did the edge program. I got 10gb of data shared with my wife. They give you am extra $25 off the cost of edge. So I am only paying 22¢ a month for each phone.
I didn't want to do the edge previously, they changed the pricing and now it cost us almost the same amount we were paying with our separate accounts.

Lol. 2 ways. You pay a prorated amount so if you have 3 months left on your contact you will only pay like 11 dollars per outstanding month. $33 dollars isn't a deterrent for most.
Also, a large portion of phone buyers (myself included) pay non contract prices for their phones.

I upgraded from my S3. I paid full price
Came from the S3, didn't pay early upgrade fees or pay full price and kept my unlimited data plan! I call that a Win Win situation!
On top of that I bought my wife a S3 right after the S4 came out and we both upgraded to the S5!
We have 5 lines on our family plan and we use the other 3 (which aren't data lines and have non-contracted phones). We upgrade the other lines when we want to get a new phone. Since we plan on having a cell phone no matter what and Verizon has the best coverage in our area we don't mind the 2 year contracts.
So we are working on getting all of our personal items off the S3's right now so that we can sell them and cover that cost of the S5's. (BTW, I forgot to mention, we bought 1 S5 and got 1 for free through Verizons special they were running, so other than being locked into a 2 year contract we will basically get them for free!).
Win Win here as well. I used the upgrade from another line on my family plan and I did it through costco so it was only $100 bucks. I was able to keep unlimited too
