I live in Idaho. Sprint advertises that they have 'mammoth coverage' around here, but they're wrong. They don't. Well, they have coverage (except for my house and office) and the 3G/4G speeds are usually complete **** unless you're within sight of a tower.
Data from the towers out in Caldwell haven't worked for over 2 months and Sprint claims that they're working just fine and have recently been updated - apparently they updated to dial-up. I really wonder how they're even selling phones over there right now.
Idaho = Battery life is usually 5 to 10 hours with normal usage.
2 weekends ago I was in Omaha and used my evo a little bit less than normal, but I could get through the whole day and still have 50%+ battery life left. The 3G speeds were also 2x better, as well as service in general.
I think it depends on where you're located and if sprint has maintained/updated their towers. I also think that most of the towers in Nampa/Caldwell (20 mi. out of Boise) are older nextel towers, which are probably complete ****/half working.
Just my theory.
Sounds plausible, but I have no idea scientifically speaking. I could guess but I don't think it would be productive.
My honest suggestion? Post this over at the dslreports.com forums; there were some really knowledgeable people lurking there.

I agree. In addition to rogue apps/processes, it seems that weak network is #2 on my list of things to check when my batt life is draining too much.
This isn't really a theory, it is fact. If you have bad coverage you can basically watch your battery drain. I could drain mine dead overnight by leaving my phone unplugged and in the basement.. I had 1 bar of roaming service. I now hqve an airave and battery life drains much less overnight.

ive had my batter die in 3 hours because of no service. I watched my battery go from 70% to 30% in 1 hour because of no signal. Since I'm not running CM6 the roam control app has been well worth the couple of bucks. No more missed calls and far less battery drain when im in low signal areas.
Poor 3G low signal is the biggest battery problem for Android!
Android (not the Evo but the entire OS) has a very poor system for dealing with Low Signal for 3G and it does NOT automatically switch over to 2G when it's supposed to which CAN and DOES result in greatly increased battery life.
Other phone OS's do this or are supposed to do this but for some reason Google has just not implemented a good system for dealing with this COMMON issue.
I use a program called JuiceDefender (Paid version is best but the free version will prove to you how useful it is) and it is literally the best app I run on my Evo. Overnight I went from my phone dying by 4pm when working at a location with low signal to having it last multiple days in some cases depending on my usage.
Do yourselves a favor, Get this application and if you have your phone rooted you get many extra features out of the full version. Can't speak highly enough of this application.

I agree with that and know that when you have 0/1/2 bars it really drains your battery life, however, I get the same battery life if I'm at home all day using it (0/1/2 bars), or if I'm at college and have 5 bars all day and I'm not using it quite as much.
I have fresh 3.3 with the htc kernel 53 fps (and all the latest radios/pri/prl/ect.) and have seen much improved battery life, but it's still the exact same.
I also have an airave at the office (which is out in Caldwell where the data doesn't even work) for the other two people on my plan, and while they have seen slightly less battery drain since we got the airave (for free), it's not a mind-blowing difference, other than the data actually works. They're also running the 2.1 stock, but rooted with unrevoked.
I guess I'm wondering if staying connected to a tower with older tech/Nextel uses more power than if it's connected to a sprint tower.

There's no way your Evo is working off of any Nextel towers. Those are IDEN and your Evo is CDMA...not happening. It's been known for years now that if you have poor/no signal, your battery will drain rapidly as the device will constantly search for a better signal.

Good to know - How do people get Sprint Phones to work on Boost mobile then? Boost is using nextel towers, or that's what I've read several times.

You're half right. Boost does use nextel towers--For iDen phones. They do use the Sprint network for CDMA phones. Basically boost carries both CDMA and iDen phones.
As for how people get Sprint phones to work with Boost(CDMA)... Hm... Let's just say they do something shady and possibly illegal...They clone ESNs.
Got my LTE upgrade done on my Xoom and now the battery is a joke. I went into settings and disabled the LTE connection, so that now 3g is only used. I also turn wifi on when at home. Currently my Xoom is draining 4ish% per hour while in standby. That means this damn thing won't last a day just sitting there, locked, with no screen on. In Honeycomb 3.0 and 3.1 I could get a days of use with 4-5 hours of screen on time and about 22-26 hours of total unplugged time. Now, under 3.2.2 my battery is totally dead after 18 hours of unplugged time with around 1-1.5 hours of screen use. This is virtually unuseable for taking notes in graduate school after work, when being close to an outlet is impossible.
Any ideas as to what's going on? Tried using Watch Dog and System Panel to see if any apps were going nuts with random CPU usage or RAM usage and everything seems to be in-check in terms of system resource usage. Considering I have 4g totally turned off and wifi enabled when I'm in range of wifi (most of the day) I don't have a clue where this power drain is coming from. Any assistance is highly appreciated given how much I rely on my Xoom for day-to-day use. 3.2.2 seems to have killed it for me.
Please help! Will try any suggestions.

Have you tried disabling mobile data entirely? When I'm in wifi, I disable the cellular connection but haven't performed any in-depth trials on battery life.
"Settings" > "Wireless & networks" > "Mobile networks" > deselect "Data enabled"
Its not just you, mine is the same way it sucks big time. There really isn't anything that I've found to fix it.
I loved how I used to be able more than a day out of a charge...
Anybody have any ideas? Maybe undervolt kernel???

I haven't but this isn't feasable. I use mobile internet for everything and even take notes and such on Google docs. Even though I'm near wifi for most of a given day, I shouldn't be bothered by manually turning mobile data on and off just to have power- mobile data should be mostly killed when wifi is active. That's how this Xoom worked before. A tablet without internet is nothing more than a paperweight to me. 2 classmates with LTE upgraded Xooms are having identical problems. No fixes found yet. Any other suggestions? This battery life is really, REALLY bad.
Tried going a factory reset and battery life is the same, horrid short, running nothing but stock apps.
Any other suggestions?

How long ago did you receive it? The degraded battery seems to have started shortly after the first initial charge after the LTE install.

Same problem here, but I have the mobile network completely turned off and it still does this! Even with the switch to CDMA only!
I will keep reading this thread (only read the about half the posts before posting) so hopefully a solution will show up. But you're not alone in the horrible battery life post LTE upgrade!
I've had my Xoom back since last Wed.
No higher battery drain than previously.
I'm on wifi 90% of the time in home and office.
Yesterday I was all over north San Diego county using 4g. Got home with 60% charge which is about the same as for a prior trip with 3g.
Put your xoom back the way it was. The new hardware sucks the battery a little more. Buy a thunderbolt and then say the xoom battery life sucks. Never charged it during the day before the upgrade. Oh well, that's the price if 4g.

Download Auto Airplane Mode by DON from the market. It will help BIG TIME!! It does just what the title states, it puts the Xoom into airplane mode automatically as soon as the screen goes off. When you turn the screen back it, the data comes right back in 3 -4 seconds and you're good to go!
Also, you don't have to uncheck any settings or turn 4G off.
Update: Mobile data completely turned off, on wifi only with Xoom sitting about 4 feet from router all morning, so wifi signal was strong. This is the first time I've used the device today. Unplugged at 330am my time, its now 130pm. Device battery is at 60%. 10 hours and 40% of battery gone. That's with mobile data 100% disabled, wifi only- can't even get the Xoom to standby for a full day now. At this current drain rate, it would go from 100% to 0% in one day with no mobile data usage, no screen on time and no usage other than syncing Gmail every 2 hours.
Brother who commented above: Thunderbolt will standby for a full day with no screen on time on wifi only and it has under 1/3 the Xooms battery capacity. I should know- my wife has one and it now outlasts my Xoom. That should not be the case.
From my understanding the Xoom has two 3225ish batteries set up in a sequence. My battery life actually seems to be about half of what it was before. Is it possible that one of the two was disconnected during the LTE radio installation and not properly reconnected? Wasn't sure of the details of how the batteries were set up, but if the Xoom could function with the second battery not working, seems like that would precisely half battery life. Anyone familiar with exactly what had to be done internally to upgrade the radio? Looking at the ifixit teardown of the Xoom, the batteries cover the whole backside- looks impossible to do any internal work on this thing without removing them. Any thoughts?

Thunderbolt got the he-man battery and modded my otter box to fit. The xoom battery has entered the battery hog realm after the lte radio. As far as I can tell the radio is cdma/lte together. And it uses power even if wifi is on and data off. It's what I would call big brother watcher. Even if your not connected the radio is txing and rxing something. You know it's lojacked!

Interestingly enough, removing the LTE SIM card and using wifi only made no improvement to battery life. I'm assuming the new radio is running at 100% all the time without throttling down, even if absolutely no connection exists or there is a string of faulty battery reinstalls in which only one battery is providing power. That might explain why some people seem to have greater battery issues than others.

im glad im not the only one with this problem! its pathetic! im taking my charging cable from my dock with me to work so ill have at least some battery life when i take the train home in the evenings
i to am glad that I'm not alone with this either. I use to charge mine every 4 days with no wifi on and almost no use. Now I get about a day with no use. I mainly use it for web searching and dungeon defenders when I'm home. Horrid battery life for doing nothing. Luckly I mainly only use it at home and am almost always on the dock I got from motor from the upgrade. I use about 4% an hour also with nothing on. Mine is completely stock with no root.
Yahoo mine is stock with absolutely no root or other mods. I guess they knew about the pissy battery life and that's why they gave a free dock. Lol. Still trying to find exactly what's killing the battery. LTE does drain a lot of juice but as I've stated before my wife has a Thunderbolt and per mW of battery power, the thunderbolt is more efficient and that's not saying much. It can standby for over a day with no use fine and it has roughly a little less than 1/3 the Xoom battery capacity. Something isn't right. Its not supposed to be this bad. Anyone filed a complaint/tech request with moto/Verizon? I think its something that we should all do and report what they say here. I have a feeling more and more people are gonna have this issue if they do the upgrade. Maybe if enough of us make some noise, something will be done.

Maybe it's not the radio.
3.2.2 may have some kind of interaction with something you guys were running that's causing wake locks to get stuck
Did you look at Settings:About Tablet: Battery Use ?
(tap on the histogram at the top for another, see if the time spent awake is solid or different from screen on)
I tested this on mine, with the mobile data disabled and lost about 1% battery every hour, this is on par with the performance I had pre-upgrade.

I realize it does not help you but you might look somewhere other than the wireless radio for the problem. I unplugged my upgraded Xoom yesterday morning around 8:30 AM. It is now 8:20 AM and my battery is at 66%. I was on 4G for about 2-3 hours yesterday, the rest of the time on wifi. I check and respond to my mail on the Xoom so it saw some use yesterday, though not as much as I normally do.
I have just canceled my 3 UK dongle, but the guy I spoke to tried telling me that tethering my phone will damage it. Personally I think this is bull to try and make me stay, but I can see it will effect the battery. This isn't a problem as I'm not afraid to open my phone and replace it if I need too. Also I only tether while charging using tasker. My tethering is unlimited on my contract so are there any issues I've missed? Or is this guy right?

Since tethering takes up juice very fast, you might need to charge more often, thus reducing your battery life faster than others.
For example, the battery can last 500 charge cycles before starting to lose its ability to hold full charges. While the 500 charges can last others a year, it may only last you half a year or so before you start seeing significant drops in battery life.

I have CM 10.1 Nightly with Mako kernel. The data usage monitor is saying Google Play Store has used 27+ GB of data. I have a 16GB Nexus 4 so that cannot be right. T-mobile SMSed me that I recently went over 4GB which sounds right.
Why is Play Store claiming it used so much?
I heard that the rc3 release of cm10 had an issue with math process when calculating data usage. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Try the newest version or another rom see if it reports the same usage.

I am still having this issue on RC4 recently, from my data usage counter on nexus 4 it is showing that i have been using 11GB for the past 5 days, from Jun 6 - Jun 10. Top usage from playstore with background usage of 2GB and background usage from Chrome of 1GB.
How is it possible that background usage can amount that such a figure? If 11GB of data traffic is being transmitted from my nexus 4, my battery life should deplet within a mere few hours. But my battery life have been nothing out of the ordinary, a full charge last me a full day till the evening when i reach home at about 7pm with a remaining battery percentage of 30%.

By the way, even if it was just a calculation error, you can limit the amount of automated actions the play store does by turning off automatic updates on a number of apps you don't wish to be automatically updated (or limit them to only do so over wifi, which is usually an option that pops up for larger than normal apps).
Personally I'd probably freak if I saw 26GB transferred, but then I would blame the measurements because I usually monitor traffic on my routers/etc (plus on the mobile network, I wouldn't have been able to transfer that much in such short period of time).

Had it a week now, and the battery life is awful compared to my prior Note 2. The old phone could get through the day, no problems, but this one is flat by 6pm.
I suspect its to do with the Knox process using 10% of the processor (according to usage timelines pro), even though ive not got Knox enabled.
Also it seems to struggle to reconnect to the 3g network (three UK) after losing signal. I have to put it into airplane mode, and off again for it to re-connect to the network.
Hoping both these can be fixed with a software update, but has anyone else found these issues, especially people coming from a note 2

On a poor signal mine is the same, my note 2 has a signal, when my note 3 doesn't. Also battery seems better on my note 2, on day 5 will see how a few more cycles of charge pan out.

I blame Exynos. The US and JPN versions will be much better.
Just turn off all the useless gimmicks such as air gesture and smart xx features and give it a few days before judging. I'm on fifth day with the phone and its temperature and battery life is better than it was on first day.
To give you an idea, that's my battery usage for today and I'm still at 43%. Didn't even start at 100% but 92%. Though I've been on wifi all day with good signal, not on data connection, so that helped with low battery consumption.

Samsung has the worst antennas anyway. where i am living i had 0 to 1 bar at my note 2. with note 3 it improved a little bit. it displays the same amount of bars but at least i can make phone calls with no problems.
At the same area i testet the new Xperia z1 and it has almost all the time 3 and more bars...what the hell samsung...not everybody is living in an signal oversaturated city....
After 5 days, battery life is impressive and improving (i think)

San Francisco doesn't have a saturation of signal?
Same thing again and again.
Buy a top notch mobile and turn off all features that make it top of the line to make the battery last one day.

I think it's a cell handover problem
I'm not sure the antenna itself is weak...I've pulled over 10 megs on 3g in a two bar situation. However it seems over keen to switch cells . I have a tool that logs which cell you are on and even when I'm stationary it keeps swapping cells
Also the number of bars on different brands cannot be meaningfully compared since some companies stretch the truth about signal strength by not having a linear scale *cough apple
Looks like the poor handover was the sim card... went into three store and they said it probably was .
I was very sceptical since it worked fine on my note 2 but it does seem to have fixed it

tbh its got better after a week of cycling.
Its still annoying as anything that knox is munching 7-15% of cpu power constantly and I dont even use it ... however its not as bad as it seems, since it seems its the CPU idling at 300MHz so in fact its less than a 3rd of the apparent figure...

You may try to
- turn Google Now! off entirely, voice search and answers still work just not the cards or some app controls (but there's S-voice for that)
- switch searching for wifi networks off
- I do not recommend turning wifi off during deep sleep, it causes more wakes and drainage on my Nex4
- use the S alternatives of as many Google apps as possible
- look around Maps to see if some sort of location sharing is ticked in, allow the only apps to access location data that you really need
- look around Know security, maybe it is part of the drainage
- optionally: try out AppOps to manage individual permissons per apps, I don't know if this works with the Note 3 though
