[Q] WiFi Direct between Galaxy S3 and Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have spent the last hour or two experimenting with various ways of wirelessly transferring files from my 64 GB S3 to the Nexus 7.
I have managed to get the Nexus 7 and Galaxy S3 to connect via Wi-Fi direct, but I have been unable to get a file to successfully transfer.
When I attempt to send a file from one device to the other using "share via" => "wifi-direct“ from various file managers, the upload shows up in the notification bar but eventually reports that it failed.
Have any of you found the secret combination to making this work properly?

I tried it with my Gnex but couldn't get it to work. they are both on AOSP 4.1.1

Btw how did you connect via wifi direct?

On the N7 ... "Settings" => "WiFi" => upper right menu (three dots) => "WiFi Direct"

Questions go in the Q&A section

Have the same problem as OP. If I WiFi Direct connect my S3 to my Wife's S3 and run BubbleUPnP on one them the other can see it in the built in media player, equally if I run BubbleUPnP on both then I can stream and render in both directions. If I connect either to the Nexus 7 then nothing shows up in BubbleUPnP.
Strangely the S3 has a WiFi Direct symbol in the notification area when connected but the Nexus shows nothing you have to go into WiFi settings and enter the WiFi Direct screen to see you are connected, Is that normal on working Nexus 7 to something WiFi Direct connections?
Another point to note is that NFC file sending has not worked S3 to Nexus they see each other and the Touch to Beam screen appears but the Nexus sends nothing when I try Nexus to S3 and the S3 says its sent but nothing appears on the Nexus when sent in the opposite direction.
I have no other devices as a tie breaker to see which isn't doing as it should and even if I did how do I fix it or report it to the non WiFi direct vendor and hop they release an update.
Any one got any tips for streaming video S3 to Nexus with no WiFi router about?
Snowdan.

For those that fall fail of the idea this may work but they are doing it wrong some follow up.
It seems that the WiFi Direct function exists in Jelly Bean and has the API calls available but the standard operating system does not support doing anything with them. Samsung are the ones that have made the S3 support sending and receiving on WiFi Direct as part of their S Beam and I guess a knock on effect is that BubbleUPnP worked for me too and the Video/Gallery/Music players have a WiFi direct option.
A Gnex thread on the issue explaining a bit more is here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1368128&page=10
Good news is it may just be a matter of time until Google/CM/Custom ROM or 3rd party apps add the functionality we were hoping for.

+1 for being able to connect the S3 to the nexus 7 but not being able to transfer anything. Tried to send a picture in the gallery but it eventually failed.

if you want to connect from android device to android device for transmitting media, check this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.budius.WiFiShoot
this was developed by yours truly, and I developed it exactly because I noticed there was nothing out there for WiFi Direct
I tested it between Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, Asus TF300 and Galaxy SII (stock ICS) and all worked fine.
The most problematic of those were the Galaxy Nexus that not always want to connect, but between N7-GalaxySII was flawless.
At the moment the app just works for photo and video but I'll be expanding more, if you guys fancy helping spreading the word about it, I'm really looking forward to see the downloads explode on it.

the app is using the standard Android WiFi Direct feature that should be available in most phones starting with ICS.
The filter on which devices should or not work will be done automatically by the Google play only enabling installation on devices with WiFi Direct feature.
Said that, absolutely yes, it should work just as smooth on the GS3 as it did on the GS2, N7, GN and Asus TF300 I had here for testing.
I've already had report on working nicely on the EVO LTE, too.
and if you try the S3, please, come back to the thread and let me know the results.

I have to thank you for this I was sad the feature was not built in as it is for S3 to S3.
I cam confirm Nexus 7 to S3 and S3 to Nexus 7 work for both pictures and video with a good transfer speed. Worth pointing out can only be done via share in the gallery app at the moment as pointed in app play store description. A well working beta I look forward to the pro version.

It works great between the s3 and the sg7. If I'd have seen your app earlier, I'd never have bothered with the otg cable I bought.

FYI, I have sent files to and from my Nexus 7 and sgs2 using Bluetooth a number of times. Just browse to the file you want to send, long press and choose "Send" then the Bluetooth logo. I use Solid Explorer as my file manager. This is handy for small files, but larger files take forever. I will definitely check out the app above, too.

I started a new thread in the development section asking for Logcats if you're experiencing force close.
Also it's a cut down version of the .apk there to test part of the system.

thanks.

My Nexus 7 and S3 don't play wel together.
What does work is using the S3 as a hotspot and then run Samba on the Galaxy S3 (Root required)
Samba takes a while to activate.. but after it does you can browse your phone using the Nexus 7 and copy stuff... no limitations on specific file extensions either.

If I want to send a picture to an S3 with wifishoot, does the s3 need to have it installed as well? Or will their sbeam functionality work for that? I would just like to be able to do a quick picture transfer to an s3 without telling the other party to download an app.

You need the WiFi Shoot on both devices.
S-Beam uses Samsung proprietary protocol (plus it uses NFC for pairing) and it will only work with other Samsung / S-beam devices.

Sorry buidus, I've tried using your app between my galaxy galaxy s3 and nexus 7, tranformer prime and galaxy galaxy with only fail.
Fortunately there are other wifidirect apps out there now. The below works without fail. Tested on gs3, nexus 7, transformer prime, galaxy nexus
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.wifidirect

and using nfc instad of wifi direct?are there differences?sorry for this stupid question, but i send yesterday 2 photos and a kernel from my gnex and n7 via nfc and paired devices with the back of the cover..all works without problems, and was fast!

Galaxy S III Android Beam with Nexus 7

Hello everyone I had a question about the Android Beam feature. It seems I cannot beam photos from my Galaxy S III T-Mobile to my Nexus 7. When I try, a thing pops up on the N7 saying that there was a new incoming tag, but no picture pops up and I can't click on it.

I have read of people having trouble sending photos even when other stuff sends. I haven't tried photos but I'll try it later and see if it works for me.

Try lining up the Samsung logo on the back of the S3 with the nexus logo on the back of the N7

S Beam and Android Beam are different technologies that were never meant to work together:
S Beam = NFC + WiFi Direct. Is Samsung proprietary and only works with SGSIII at the moment.
Android Beam = NFC + Bluetooth. Is Google developed (not sure if open or close) and only works with Jellybean devices at the moment.
There's the older version of the Android Beam that was NFC because of NFC slowness it does not transfer photos at all.
Android beam is also on SGS3, not just sbeam. I need to do some digging to find out what all android beam is capable of.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
Seems Android beam is based off of NDEF messages which are text codes that are primarily for sharing contacts, and web/YouTube video URLs.

So I had the same issue, all you need to do is turn of SBeam on the GS3 so that only NFC Beam is on for both devices. Open a photo, touch the backs of the devices and boom, it works. Apparently if you have both SBeam and NFC Beam on, SBeam gets tricked into thinking it is being called upon when in fact the Nexus 7 is initiating NFC Beam. Once SBeam is off, NFC Beam is all the devices use and all runs smothly.
Hope this helps!
What about YouTube or contacts? Can you beam them?

Guest Access - no one can connect but my google account

I was wondering if anyone else has been able to get more than one google account actually connected to their nexus q. We are trying one in our office and only my phone and tablet with my google account can connect it it. When we try with someone elses phones the nexus q app always says no devices found. Now if I do a factory reset it does show on the phone but once one person has connected and taken ownership none of the other phones can find the device or connect to it.
Any ideas? Searched everywhere and can't find anything on it.
Will try tomorrow and let you know.

I still can't get any guests to connect. Can you explain how you did this? What I have tried is I have a nexus s4g as the primary device and setup the q with it. I then took my hp touch pad with CM9 and was able to find the q with out any issues at all. Both have my same google account on it. Then we tried to connect some other android devices we have at the office but none of them could find the nexus q for some reason. They were all on the same network and all had at least ics running as their os. The devices tested were a Verizon galaxy nexus. An AT&T Samsung galaxy s2 and a tmobile galaxy s2 and finally an htc touch pro. None of those would ever find the device. We even tried adding my account to one of the other devices but that did not help. The only difference from my deviceses to the other test devices is mine are rooted but I doubt that would make a difference. Any ideas.
3 devices I tried are rooted one isn't. Two have the same Google account the other two are both different. Worked on all 4. Maybe try rebooting nexus q and re-set it up.. sometimes I have to repower my q as it doesn't start up by it self once in sleep mode... but that's because I don't use it too much.. I want to root it but want to see what Google will add to it first
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Okay so after numerous times trying to get this working I just broke down and bought a new router. Simply plugged my current jack at the office into that and instead of using our offices wireless, connected the q to the new router and boom, now every one can connect.
So for sure there are some networking issues with the Q that needs to be worked out but hope this can help. I have sent Google the routers we were using in the office (cisco) so they can add that to their list of routers with issues. Definitely confirmed that the routers were fully open so who knows what was causing the issue.
Thanks again,
Joe

[Q] Bluetooth Tethering on Nexus

I use open garden to tether from my Galaxy S3 to my laptop and usually it works ok but obviously its nowhere near as fast as normal broadband, gonna be selling my laptop in a few weeks and just using the Nexus but I'm a but concerned now as open garden can take ages to connect and just Bluetooth tethering in general doesn't appear to work as well as with my laptop, its not always great on my laptop and prone to dropped connection but it seems to be worse with the nexus
I've tried unsuccessfully to WiFi tether using both ROM,s I use on my Galaxy S3 Paranoid Android and Viking so just have to use Open Garden, anyone else having this trouble and any recommendaions'etc.
Just got the Nexus 2 days ago,am rooted just running stock ROM for now.

How long is an ages? As in years?
If your trying to be a smartass you've failed miserably
Another bizzare thing,I'm currently connected to the Internet on my Nexus via open garden and can surf fine but when I open Google Play and go to update some apps it just stays at `waiting for network ` and won't download apps, also anytime I boot up the Nexus 2 apps force close straight away The Journal online newspaper and The National Geographic app, yet both these apps work on my Galaxy S3 and I know the journal anyway should definitely work on tablets.... anyone know what might be the problem here.....this is not good
Anyone any assistance?

Nfc uses?

I ordered a nexus, but I wanna know, what I can use nfc for?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
This is exactly what I was wondering but was afraid to ask in order not to look like a noob
I mean, I know the basics of the technology, but any good use? I mean, I don't care about NFC tags that I have to glue to my desk, because I already have a better way to turn on wifi automatically or do different stuff (i.e. Setting Profiles uses GPS or GSM location to do these things).
I mean - I have Nexus 7 and Note 2, which both have NFC. I saw some demonstrations concerning file trenasfer between phones and what not... But when I put my Note 2 onto N7, I only hear a beep and that's it... what has to be done i.e. to use NFC to transfer something between these 2 devices? Does this work in combo with Wifi direct?
D.
In am not sure if the note 2 uses the normal beam app built into android or not but I know if I put my nexus s or nexus 4 back to back next to my nexus 7 (nexus s to nexus 4) with say the gallery app opened up it will allow me to beam the image selected to the other device...you can also use it for webpages, contacts and other such shareable items.

You beat me to it
I like that dude's YouTube channel, so thanks for introducing me to it... Ah, Hackintosh, there's a scene I haven't been to involved with since the early leaks of the developer preview of 10.4.3 way back when... (I'm pretty certain I was amongst the first to get it booted on anything other than the developer platform, lol) NFC though, I've not really had much use for it. Got a few devices which support it, my partner's S2 as well, although trying to get the I9100P's party piece working in an I9100 CM10.1 ROM has been hit and miss. I should grab some tags to use for profile switching and app launching on my Nexuses (Nexii?), it seems like the only thing I'm likely to use it for in the short term, at least.
Nfc is a gimmick. I tried to send a pic to my cousin once using nfc. It wouldn't even send it... It said file was too large... Wtf its like a 25kb pic file... Seriously?
Gimmicks gonna gimmick

YouTube: Not At Home

I know that many people have written about this problem, but no suggestions work. Maybe not enough info?
Device: Glxy (SPH-L900) Note II
OS: JB 4.1.2
ROM: Irrelevant, since this prob has existed from Day 1, even before Rooting. Plus, my current ROM is still a variation of the Factory ROM.
PROBLEM:
I cannot play YouTube videos when connected to my LAN at home (via WiFi).
I can play then on anyone else's WiFi. And I can play them fine at home, if it's thru 3G.
ROUTER: EA4500
I tried Port Forwarding. I even tried setting up a DMZ for my phone's Router.
MORE INFO:
My Glxy (P7510) Tab 10.1" plays them fine.
My wife's Glxy (SPH-L710) S3 also plays them fine.
I tried un/reinstalling the YouTube app, a different YouTube app, etc..
I tried all of the "delete the cache/data" sugfestions, etc.. All of the normal, intelligent suggestions and even some of the not so intelligent suggestions, like:
"Make yourself breakfast and flip your eggs 3 times while singing the theme song from the 'Friends' show" and "Spin 3 times outside, while doing a rain dance while holding your phone in one hand and a tuna melt in the other". And of course, my personal favorite, "If you climb to the top of Mt Ararat, there's this bush and...". Man, that was one heck of a climb! But sadly, still no solution.
Anyway, I'm getting the ever popular (paraphrased), "Cannot connect to server. Tap to Retry.".
I have tapped numerous times, but no help.
It does not matter if I am using the YouTube app, or trying to view a YouTube video in a web page, or whatever. The only difference is that many times when I try to view one thru a web page, instead of getting the error message, it will immediately display a few tiny still images (all at once in the small video screen, it does not play any video).
This is at the point where I am beginning to pull my hair out (it's been almost a year now)!
PLEASE HELP ME, PEOPLE!!!
Has anyone heard of any solution that works? I know some of them have worked for a minority of people with this problem, but not for me.
Is anything fixing this yet? I have scoured XDA and the Internet and nothing has worked.
Thank you everyone for taking the time out of your day to read my message.
And just FYI, I started a new thread in this more general thread, because the threads that I again saw mentioning this issue (I have posted in a couple of them before), don't really get any attention any more, being so old.
I even (previously) started a new thread in a more specific area, but still no help (I appreciated the attempts).
So please, if anyone is upset with me for posting this here, please understand that I have tried repeatedly. I just finally I guess, come to the conclusion that maybe being so specific about where I posted it was hurting the cause and maybe, as long as I stay within the ”device boundaries", that I just might do better.
Thanks again and I truly very much look forward to some responses!

Not sure, especially since you said web version also doesn't work. All I know is that the 'Media Server' system service requires net access to render video in YouTube. I've had to slap that around on occasion and check it wasn't blocked by iptables.
The only things I can suggest are trying a traceroute to the YouTube video servers (can't remember exactly but could be s.ytimg.com). If you haven't already, reinstalling the YouTube app as well. You basically want to figure out if its a network connectivity issue (ie. WiFi between router and phone) or to do with the ROM/app then go from there.
Thanks for your post. And I'm not trying to be rude when I say this, but I already stated that I uninstalled/reinstalled YouTube.
As for the Router, like I said, my other Galaxy devices work fine with it, plus I even set up a DMZ, which should act as a "totally unblocked passthrough" and still, the same thing happens.
You're right of course, that there has to be something going on between this device and my router, since it doesn't do this with any other router I've tried.
Remember, it works fine in other locations.
But it also has to be something to do with the Note II, because my wife's S3 and Glxy Tab work fine!
But here's the weird thing!!!
When my friend who has a Note II comes over and links to my WiFi, he can no longer use YouTube! Aaaggghhh!!! <lol!>

That's a good idea, but I have changed the channel a couple of times. As for changing the router, I can't do that, unless I want to go backwards.
I was going to try a 3rd party firmware, but unfortunately, none of the 3 major ones support the LinkSys EA4500.

Let's try something productive. Make yourself familiar with the Linux shell, root your phone, install shark for root, then, connect you your phone using ssh or adv shell, locate the tcpdump binary, capture traffic on port 80 and try to watch a video.
Upload the cap file.
