Headphone Issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just opened my new Nexus 7 earlier today, and haven't modified it in any way. For some reason, while I am watching a movie, I try to plug in my headphones, and the audio continues to play through the speakers. Anyone else have this issue or a possible solution?

Noticed that too, in any video player. Really wierd and is a real problem.

My headphone port is defective :-( I have to wiggle the headphone jack to get it to work and if I move it in any way it stops working.
From my long awaited and totally worth it EVO LTE!

Similar issue appeared today when I plugged my headphones into the port. i have to hold the cable a specific way for SOME of the audio to come through the headset. i've tried a few pairs of headphones too.

[Q] Headphone/Speaker

Does anyone else have this issue where sometimes when you plug in headphones the sound still comes through the speaker? I have the headphones plugged all the way in. I usually have to restart the phone to get it to work properly.
[Edit]: When this happens the sound comes out from the speaker as well as through the headphones.
Mine is more of when I bump the headphone jack it either plays through the speaker or pauses the song. It seems very sensitive
My first Vibrant had a faulty headphone jack, that would short out with even the slightest touch. You guys might be in the same boat.
Overall, yes, I would agree that the headphone jack is 'cheap'. It seems as if it could be easily broken, and having one arrive DOA is not a great sign.
If you're still able to, I'd take your phones in for a swap. You're not going crazy.
Same issue here. It's especially an issue when you're sitting in your quite cube at work about to watch The Bed Intruder video on YouTube and it comes blaring out of the speaker when you thought is was going to come out of your headphones.
I think the third connection point for the video causes the problem since the device has 3 contacts instead of just left and right audio like most devices.

[Q] Problem playing music through car aux port

I connect the headset jack to the aux port of my car. Half the time the music continues to come out of the phone speakers. Any solutions to this problem?
Am 99% certain the headphone jack on the DX (3.5mm) should default to playing to whatever source is plugged in. What ROM are you running and have you ever messed with your sound options?
Original rom just rooted.no I never messed with it.
Are you sure you are fully pushing it in?
Yes ,sometimes works fine sometimes one speaker sometimes doesn't play at all!
I think that the problem is not the phone - make sure the other side of things is working (test with another device).
I would say its prolly your auxiliary cable that you are using or its the headphone jack of your x... I've had my headphone jack go bad on so many discmans to my ipod and just last week my aux cable in my car started to go bad by only playing out of one side of the speakers

[Q] Did 4.2 break the audio jack?

Since updating to 4.2, no matter how hard/deep I shove it in, the device never outputs music to the earbuds. Only to the speaker.
Did Google break this is did my device NOT enjoy it's perfectly normal OTA?
mine works
Try using a different headset to verify.
On mine headphones work just fine after the update.
But when you plug them in until the end you ca hear the speakers or nothing?
Try a different set or you could revert but it shouldn't be related to software update.

no sound on right earbud
My one also got problem with headphone jack. No sound on right ear bud after upgrade. I've tried with several ear buds but same. Do you guy have any idea about this ? Thanks.
I've tried two pairs of earbuds and a pair of headphones, no difference.
I plug them in, no sign of anything on the system bar.
If music was running, it continues through speaker on the back, as if nothing was plugged in.
If I start music after plugging them in, it plays through the speaker on the back.
Hmm, where's the proper support place to go for a Nexus bought in store, Google, ASUS?
It works fine with my HTC OEM Beats ear buds although the music buttons don't work, but not my Sony Live Key ear buds, but you have to push the plug in until it won't go any further to get sound to come out of the headset and not the rear speaker.

I've tried the earbuds from my (T-Mobile) Galaxy S3, J5M JBuds, and a an old pair of Cyber Acustics HE-200 and no dice.
The Samsung buds, I know need to be pushed in all the way to function, but these don't go in any deeper without breaking the tablet lol.
Had no change with the 4.1.2 or 4.2 factory images, so I'm calling this one coincidence meets hardware failure.
That's gotta be some bad coincidence. I just picked up my worst pair of iBuds and they worked just fine.

[Q] Galaxy Note 3 Headphones Issue

I used some really old iPhone headphones on my Note 3 the first day I had it, last week. I haven't had an iPhone since 2010, so I am talking super old and beaten to death. They worked fine.
I only mention this because I've read that some older headsets are not compatible with the S4 and Note 3.
Then I paired them with a pair of ARCTIC P253BT Bluetooth Stereo Headphones. The pairing worked, in theory. The phone and headphones seemed to think they were connected.
But all I got for audio was beeps from the headphones when it connected and the phone would play at the normal, holding-to-ear volume -- even when I clicked the button for headphones and jacked up the volume in Bluetooth Settings. This did not shock me because they are cheap headphones.
Later, I tried to use the Aux jack in my car -- no dice. Phone just acted like it didn't have headphones in.
Tried the old iPhone headphones again, phone acted like it did not have headphones in. I figured I at least had those.
Restarted -- same issue.
I realize this is a very low-level question for this forum. I have yet to ROM the phone and will probably wait until TouchWiz finally beats me down.
Part of the problem is that I had been rolling with a Nexus 4 on CM 10.2, I've been running CM for a year over multiple devices and I've never had a Samsung device.
So I just feel like I don't know how to solve anything. I realize asking for TouchWiz advice is like Yankees ownership asking Red Sox fans for advice, but I am taking a shot.
Any thoughts?
Sounds like you have a bad headphone jack or something wrong with the port connector in the motherboard. I would submit a warranty claim and get a new one.
Btw I've used Bluetooth headphones and the aux port in my car it works perfect.

Wow, seriously? I did not expect it to be that extreme. Whatever went wrong happened some time after I initially used the first set of ear buds.
So maybe I did it? I have been treating the thing like gold, though.
You say that it does nothing when you plug in a headphone right? Like there is nothing connected?

I've been having the same issue and it seems to correct itself if power my phone off/on, but I'm not happy about the headphone jack being so unreliable on a brand new phone. I've plugged in headphones and an aux out headphone cord and experienced this problem. When the issue arises, the phone will pause for a second as if it's going to send audio to the headphones or aux out device, the unit states "headphones connected" in the notification tray, and then within a second of doing so the audio continues to come from the Note 3 speakers instead of the headphones or external speakers.

It works for one second then either gets really dim or starts playing at the normal call volume (not speaker volume). I took it to the store today and They had no idea. They thought they were very clever when they first got it and I told them all the setting they were planning to try had already been confirmed. They went through the motions. No dice.
They think it is a hardware issue.
If it is a hardware and that is what it sounds like then, you can submit a manufacturer warranty claim with Verizon Wireless.

I did that and got a new one. Same issue. Insane. Must be something in my settings.

My solution to this behavior (YMMV, but I had the exact same behavior)
The issue ended up being the case. It was generating enough of a standoff that the AUX cable wasn't making complete connection. I think the Note is configured to only recognize a headphone output if both channels are making connection (which is slightly atypical behavior).
TL;DR: If you're having a similar problem, try taking off your case.

I'd like to add my voice to the chorus. Almost identical problem. Works perfectly on all other devices but not 2007 Saab aux. Worked with former Note 2. I tried 3 different cables. Plays fine for a little while then audio directed to phone speaker when notification sounds. I have no case. Pretty sure it's not cabling. Heard it was low impedance headphones. My carrier has not heard of this. I belive it's a compatibility issue with the aux port. Trying bluetooth alternative. I dislike the Hassel but at a loss for now. Maybe Kitkat?
I am having the same issue on a phone that is less than a week old. Headphones work, then later they don't. It shows them connected, briefly sends audio to earphone, then to phone speaker. Reboot fixes it.

I don't think this is a hardware issue as the behaviour doesn't really make sense. I suspect it has to do with the service that detects whether headphones are connected or not.
I have this issue from time to time with multiple pairs of headphones.
A restart usually fixes it, but not straight away. I usually have to wait a minute or two after the gui is loaded before the headphones will be detected again.

Mines just started doing this. Is there a fix other than replacing it?
try other headphones?
This sounds like the audio jack problem from the LG G3. Do your headphones have integrated microphones? The LG G3's problem is, that using headphones without microphone produces the same behaviour like mentioned above. The audio stops/starts playing when twisting the headphone plug because it loses connection for a moment and therefore stops the music. Using headphones with integrated microphones solves this issue because of the additional pole for it in the headphone plug.
I have the same when i connect it to my car's amplifier via an aux cable

That could be it, I usually use wireless headphones in the gym but I forgot them when I went to the gym the other day. Also I noticed it when I use my Aux cable in the car.
Yeah i have that too!, it's like you're describing my phone.
Are it the ones with the dac?

Actually it's been said that earphones of same model with microphone have less clarity than without mic of same.

there's a head phone jack ?
I prefer blueteeth.
somehow i missed this thread before. I posted on here about my problem recently. Mine started having a problem back in May or June where it will loose the left audio channel when plugged in to the car stereo after some time playing. reconnecting the cable would help for 5-10 mins before it would do it again. hard to deal with when driving on the highway. Then it got to the point where bumping the connector would cause the google assistant to keep coming on or the popping noise in the speakers or making the songs pause or skip to the next one. I got a replacement and it's fine so far. So worrisome. And this happened on someone elses car as well and with 3 different aux cables. So that rules out a faulty car stereo or cable.

Well i went out of town today and the phone did good until i was a mile from home then the left audio channel started cutting out when playing music on Poweramp. Dammit. i unplugged the aux cable and plugged it in again but less then a minute later it started doing it again. wiggling the connector didn't make a difference. anyone have this issue? I don't know if it's related to the jack issue or a software issue. I just got this replacement phone last Wednesday. I"m an audiophile so it pains me that i can't use a "real" quality audio player on this phone without skipping or the audio channel cutting out like this. I never had so many problems with my other android phones except the motorola Razr HD i used to have.

Headphone jack problem solved
Hi all. I had the same headphone jack problem a while ago as described by the op, and i found this post //imgur. com/ gallery/ 5cou6 (should have https in front + fix the space, as i am a new member and not allowed to post outside link), followed the simple fix, and have never had any issue ever since. Hope it helps
Update: Ups. Just noticed that someone had already posted it haha. Anyway, try that first before you bring it to service center
