Try a launcher (such as Nova or Apex) from play store.
go launcher is another great alternative.

You can also adjust your DPI in the build.prop on your phone assuming it is Rooted. try 260 or 280 and then set your icon rows and columns to 3 in ADW.Launcher
I'm using this app which rocks!!! I want to start customizing it even more but run into two issues:
1 - anyone know what the default icon size is? 12x12? 24x24? Etc?
2 - how do you get around the widget gap? I have two icons side by side and they are not flush.

1. Don't know the size for icons, but the area is 126x97, with 1 pixels between boxes.
2. Can't get around the space lengthways because it's designed for square icons.
Use one of the launcher programs that allows you to change # of rows/columns to make them square.
Look in the home screen posting thread, someone made all different sized icons for DV that have no spacing. They are all different sizes, 2x1, 2x2, and 3x3

Is there a launcher that allows to make larger the home / apps screens icons?
The stock launcher doesnt allow this..
Ive tried Nova. it allows for different rows and columns, but STILL very small tiles
I know the widgets can be re-sized, but I'd like to also make the tiles/icons on the home screen and app drawer larger too..
Please chime in with your recommendations and comments.

Try ADW Launcher. It has an option to use HDPI icons on MDPI devices (such as our tab), so the icons become larger.

Some of my icons (like all google apps) have an ugly white boarder around them. When I go into home screen settings I can change the shape of the icons to "original" or "rounded" etc. but that doesn't change the shape for some of the icons. It's apps like playstore, gmail, whatsapp. Things like that.
Is this the same for you guys?

Unfortunately it is also on mine.
Just found out that it's actually an Android Oreo feature called "adaptive icons". It's built in on a system level and apparently can't be disabled
So the only option is to use a custom launcher with icon packs.

But you can apparently change the shape to circles or whatever, and I'm not sure where the menu to do this is. Anyone have any ideas?

The menu is in display/home screen/

The icon change option appears only on stock themes.. !! But not for downloaded themes

In nova launcher settings just hold for few seconds volume down, that will activate labs, then go in to icon shape menu in nova and activate legacy icons.

In display settings, 5:6 also in dpi tryed 450-530.
Still icons are big..

Hello i don't think this is possible. However i found out that theme changes make quite a difference in icon sizes. Some themes have much bigger icons.
Install a decent launcher and you can make the icons any size you like. Nova, for.example.
Yes Nova launcher is the best in my opinion
hold your finger on home screen then into home screen settings
homescreen grid to 5x5
apps screen grid to 5x5
