When I got "unlimited data" bundle with fair usage policy of 250MB, i thought it should be more than enough for a month. However, just checked my online orange account and i have already used all 250 mb with 10 days before the start of new month/bundle.
Used phone for browsing and youtube + emails. However, didn't anticipate that it will take 250mb. Now it seems a very small allowance. Any idea if I can still increase my package to 500MB ? (contract already 20 days old now - it was month 15 upgrade). or may be Orange will increase all unlimited bundles in near future ?
Secondly, is there a GPRS monitor for HD? I mean is there a way to monitor how much MBs of data has been used so far or being used by an application like youtube or during browsing? So that one can monitor his use.
Thanks
SPB have a GPRS monitor
http://spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/wirelessmonitor/?en
EDIT : I don't know if it works with the HD though - I assume it does.
omg that is really much.
i just upgraded my german vodafone tariff to 200 mb for the next month.
i hope that will be enough.
i think youtube takes a lot of traffic. especially when you activate high quality.
The reason I wanted to stay with T-Mobile UK.... it's 1GB fair usage policy.
The phone cost me more to get it on T-Mobile (Thru Expansys) but the 1GB was more valuable to me.

SPB GRPS Monitor is now called SPB Wireless Monitor and works perfectly on the HD.
I used up 45mb in just a week with just basic browsing and emails, didnt even download anything yet.
I would cut down on YouTube, that's where the big usage goes. General browsing and stuff is generally next to nothing.
I just upgraded to this bundle. I was never sold it as 'unlimited' though? The lady explained it was a 250 meg package for £7.50, the next package down was 4 meg for £4!?!? bit of a difference!
After the 250 meg, what happens? You carry on with standard usage, £1.50 cap a day?
I use Opera mini on my M700/P3600 and so far in the last 3 weeks I've only used about 70Mb. I've probably browsed every day, sometimes for up to 4 or 5 hours constantly but mainly on forums and phone review sites. Does Opera Mini compress the pages more than the version that ships with the WM 6.1 phones?
1 youtube 2-3min video is about +/-10mb, that's a lot! i stopped watching youtube on my HD
I used 50MB in a couple of days after watching a couple of things on YouTube. Since then though I've only used around 10MB in email in occasional browsing.
Spb wireless monitor is brilliant. shows the breakdown of all data used through different channels. Ideal to monitor how much data ie being used. It showed em how much YOUTUBE cost. I guess that was the reason I managed to finish 250MB in 20 days.
Have to cut down on youtube now , though it is very addictive and I wish , Orange had a better data package with atleast 1gb.
luckey me i have 5gb free and after that they just cap the speed it still dosent cost anny extra
but i have used 3gb now since the 1st dec
i have questioned orange re exceeding fair usage and was informed on many occasions that i wont be charged but warned if im constantly exceeding my limit.
with o2 free unlimited web bolt on..... free unlimited land line bolt on...
happy days...
orange do an unlimited evening and weekend package for £5 a month with 1gb fair usage. also the £1.50 daily cap.
the unlimited 250 usage package they are offering at the moment is a joke. they sell the hd with this package but it expires after 3months anyway and then automatically puts you on the unlimited evening and weekends package.
i have my emails updating every two hours and am signed into msn most days, outside of the evening and weekend package with the daily cap my gprs charges have only been about £12 in a month.
From the day I got the Touch HD (Wednesday) to the Monday just gone, (so about 4 days), I have used 0.075MB.
Anyway, I asked and the guy said the 250MB is a guide. I suggested that if I used 260MB they wouldn't charge me, but a big excess in data usage would result in a flag of your account.
However, "excessive" hasn't been quantified yet.

WHAT ???? Y would it expire after 3 months? 250MB/unlimited data bundle is part of the contract on Panther 45. (choice b/w Unlimited Landline, Unlimited Txts or 250MB Data). It is supposed to be for the whole length of the contract i.e., 18 months.
Are they using 250MB for guide only? But I have checked my online account on Orange and I am already been charged for like £1.6 + approx. for data use outside my package. I guess they are using 250MB limit strictly. However, to compete with other networks, they should really increase it.
orange are lame and stingy when it comes to data, i mean they got/had exclusive rights to the Touch HD: a multimedia communication device, designed to keep you connected, informed and updated; all of which require a data connection.
Yet their measly fair usage policy limits the potential of the device itself and disables you from using it for its true designed purpose.
My brother uses, youtube, internet (and many things that require a data connection) without even thinking about data usage and fair crappy usage policies on his iphone, o2 provide users of the iphone with an all you can eat buffet (another reason why iphone is doing well)
Orange is like those cheap short-haul airlines, everything extra costs you extra extra
Excuse me drifting off-topic ever so slightly, but can anyone tell me:
How fussy are Orange about the use of their 1GB off-peak service?
The small print seems to prohibit instant messaging, any kind of non-orange streaming etc.
Do they really make a fuss or block users for small amounts of such usage?
Do they block any ports?

Hi
I wondering if someone knows how to watch tv on Xperia?
Cause I seen that they have create iPlayer for Xperia. Read please the link.
http://www.xperiax1.net/Latest/bbc-iplayer-comes-to-xperia-x1.html
I use KPN network and have free internet and streaming. Can i use a tv application for my Xperia so I can watch tv without payin for application?
Try this:
http://www.diamondtv.fr/
It had a fair few channels from all over the world. Even some porn ones.
you could use tvuplayer for windows mobile
http://pages.tvunetworks.com/labs/mobile.html
tvu mobile? .. thats amazing !!! ... do u guys think there is gonna be a problem with the provider though? Because even though I am on a unlimited data plan with Vodafone UK - I think the small print does say something about "reasonable amount of usage" bla bla max. 200 mb a month (could that be right?) .. so basically if you stream 90 minutes of premierleague I guess u d exceed that fairly quickly ..
what are your thoughts?
yeah - the "unlimited" thing basically means "unlimited web browsing" - i.e. streaming isn't included.
it's the same as anything like this - if you do a bit of streaming and end up with 225mb of usuage they probably wont bill you, if you managed 400mb they might not but you never know....just covering themselves i think.

VodaUK is 500mb fair use. Most likely if you go over you'll get a letter (or the speed will be reduced), do it again and they'll remove the package.
There is also a chance that you could even be billed at £2/mb for each over the allowance.

Mobile Internet and email pack (Pay monthly customers only)
The Mobile Internet and email pack is a monthly data access bundle available on compatible price plans. It can be included in your monthly line rental fee or added to your account as a monthly subscription. The Pack gives you unlimited data access in the UK only, subject to a fair use limit of 500mb per month. If we think your use is excessive or that you are abusing the service we may ask you to moderate your usage and/or we reserve the right to charge you for the excessive element of your usage at the standard out of bundle rate for your price plan. We may also move you to a more suitable price plan or an equivalent price plan without a Mobile Internet and email pack. The Mobile Internet and email pack is for private non-commercial use only and roaming charges apply to all data access from abroad.

SPB TV works great on X1.
Limited channels but great choice.
News ,music,sports...
If you're unlimited, they are not going to charge you for overusing, unless it says so explicitly in the contract. What they might do is they might ask you to hold your horses a little more. They might also just silently get rid of you, stating some obscure reason for termination (and charging you termination fees). Happened to me with a (Vodafone based) provider.

sorry... do u know if spb tv has more channels than spb online?
One of the must annoying things about mobile tv is Sky News only brodcasting the lnews headlines over and over again! ie, its not really live, its a news loop
there is a free software in the general development section called webtv, it has over 1000 channels, not sure if the ones your looking for are included but worth having a look as it is free

Hi ,the SlingPlayer is perfect more then 800 channels, the same Tv channels I've got at home connected with the Slimbox ,and the Skybox £120, you need wireless router £120 I watch my channels tv in London from Tenerife, Sardinia, Paris...more or less all over in the world. Then SPB Online £ 25 less channels 25/30 with italian channels like Rainews24, sport ecc. and Pocket Tv but this one is a bit crap. The best for me is the SlingPlayer.Ciao
Hi Guys, I am looking to get an Android phone in the next month or 2, and I have kinda fallen for the Vodaphone Magic. But I have a couple of questions that you guys might be able to answer.
The Vodaphone UK contract come with "unlimited" Data - actually 500mb a month. I am looking to use the net almost all the time (web surfing, Last.fm, email, spotify (when it comes...) google maps etc. Is this a reasonable amount of data allowance for this type of use, or will I probably go over it...
Can you get BBC Iplayer on this phone over 3G?
Thanks Guys....

Just do the maths (I'm assuming bytes not bits) 500MB per month equals 0.7MB per hour which is more than a last.fm song but I'm guessing your not going to be using it ALL the time Last.fm and Spotify will be the main eaters of Bandwidth. Browsing, e-mail and Web won't use much Bandwidth at all.

Yes, there is an app for it but obviously it is not a supported app by the BBC
You should be fine, just be careful with last.fm as constantly streaming music will get you close. I'm pretty sure there's an app out there on the market that can track data usage, you probably should download it when you get the phone.
Wi-fi
Also remember to make use of wi-fi areas. So if you're at work try and use an available router or sweet-talk an IT guy. At home remember to use your own wi-fi (if you have one).
Hi moremadness2001,
Slight problem,
I am the IT Guy!!!!!!! - I work in Primary Schools in the UK, were WiFi is still not used greatly, due to it being so unreliable...
I think 500mb per month is enough? I just want to never come to a point using it where I have to worry about if I have come to the end of my limit..
Also how big are apps usually?
from 20 kb to a few megs.. I've not seen any more than that (that i can think of).. I think the only really data heavy apps will be obvious things like streaming, and street view etc..
TBH you are more likely to brain your phone battery that use up your bandwitch I think
I believe Vodafone are quite nice about the 500MB limit, I remember reading of someone using 2GB in a month and they sent him a letter just saying watch your usage, nothing came of it, it's only a problem if you break it every month.

Try beebplayer, available in the Market, works like iPlayer and has the capability to watch live BBC channels (don't forget 'you need a license').
I managed to watch the F1 last Sunday while out, the stream was obviously delayed a few minutes, but better than no alternative.
Wow I thought Canada was bad 500MB = "unlimited", here in Canada we get 6GB
It seems ridiculous to sell a device that does all these things online, when the network won't even allow it. I'm talking about the 500mb fair usage policy (FUP) Vodafone place on their 'unlimited' mobile internet, when T-Mobile seems to allow you a 3GB limit.
But stop the press! I just got off the phone with Vodafone today and was told that they are in talks to INCREASE their FUP limit by Christmas! (in time for their take on the beloved iPhone). Does any one have any more information on this!? Because the FUP is the ONLY thing stopping me from getting the HD2 out from Vodafone now and not wait for T-Mobile!
Also, does anyone have any experience with Vodafone/T-Mobile voice and data coverage in the UK? That would be a big factor too in deciding which network provider to sign with.
I use TMobile in the Midlands and have no problem with voice and data reception, still waiting for my HD2 to arrive so cant comment if the reception is any better or worse than my Kaiser

The 500Mb FUP is the reason I left Orange when I had an Omnia HD. Stupid limit.
T-Mobile are excellent - even though they didnt work out for me - heres why:
I went in to get a HTC Hero - did the Street Check online - had excellent coverage and good 3G coverage. Got a great contract and the staff were very good. Got home - which is in a little town called leek (just outside Stoke) and had no 3g coverage at all. Left it a few days just in case it sprung to life then rang customer services. The very nice lady told me they have two versions of the coverage checker - one for customers and one for their Techies - the Techie one showed zero 3G coverage even though the online street check showed good coverage.
The T-mobile guys were great and I returned the phone no fuss - but be wary of the street checker - ring them to double check. There network seemed excellent and they will soon be merged with Orange who have a significant 3G network. If I had coverage I would defo go with T-mobile...

T-Mobile nearly always has a one gigabyte limit. They make an exception for one or two Android-based phones, such as the Hero, which have a lot of constantly updating widgets - for those phones only, if you buy the phone from T-Mobile, you will get a 3GB limit. As far as I'm aware the limit on an HD2 will be 1GB - but it might be worth checking this with T-Mobile customer services.
T-Mobile also block some ports on their standard internet service so you can't use MSN Messenger on it, or access certain websites at all (e.g. iPlayer).
I just went with Vodafone as the T-Mobile signal is poor where I live. Almost went with O2 as there have the same Fair Usage Policy as T-Mobile but the Vodafone have a pay as you go option which is a max of 50p per day with a limit of 25 Meg. As I would not use my Phone for internet all that much it is the best option for me. As I don’t need to pay an extra £7.50 a month but can us it when ever I want and not pay through the noise for it.
For myself, the benefits of Vodafone, outweigh the downside of having only 500MB of data. I've never gone over my data for the month, and find it quite hard usually, to go over 15MB a day (roughly what 500MB is over the month). I use SPB Wireless Monitor to keep track of it.
It is nice to hear that Vodafone might be increasing this limit tho.

lol. T-Mobile have 3 versions of internet for mobiles. Basic Web and Walk with 1Gb fair use policy and blocked ports. Web & Walk plus with 3Gb fair use and open for MSN etc and Laptop Tethering, and Web & Walk Max which has a 10Gb fair use policy and is open for everything including Skype and other VOIP calling. The difference in price between basic and Plus is about £3 -£5. All of these packages are available to all phones.

All of these may be available, but the point is that you have to pay extra for them. By contrast, other providers don't block ports in their standard Internet packages.

Depends how you view it. I would argue that their standard is web & walk plus, that allows you to tether, which O2 for instance would charge you an extra £15 on top of your data bundle to do. However T-mobile also offer a budget basic package for people who just want the football results on saturdays.

My point is that if you pay the advertised price for a T-Mobile phone you will not get Web'n'Walk Plus (unless it's a G1 or a G2, which are special cases). You get the Plus version if you pay £5 more per month than the advertised price. If the purpose that you want to use the connection for requires one of the ports that is blocked on the standard service, you need to be aware of this.
The discussion started because someone suggested that a 3GB limit is standard on T-Mobile, and it isn't - it's only standard if you buy a G1 or a G2. Otherwise it costs extra. You could reasonably argue that T-Mobile's upgraded package is better than other carriers' upgraded packages, but we need to make sure that people who decide to buy (say) an HD2 from T-Mobile aren't expecting to get the "Plus" package without playing extra for it.
I think there are also heavier restrictions on Web'n'Walk Plus than there are on a standard "Mobile Broadband" package. If you get a 3GB per month package from O2 you can do pretty much what you like with it up to the the 3GB limit. But (under the terms of your contract) you're not allowed to download audio or video over a Web'n'Walk Plus connection, or make Skype calls. (You need to upgrade to the Max version for that).

How does Mobile Broadband Plus work?
As well as basic browsing and emailing, you'll be able to take full advantage of what the web has to offer, which means you can:
Send instant messages - chat with your friends in real-time
Stream video - watch clips on YouTube
Update your blog - write when inspiration strikes
Download - save and view music, image and movie files
How does Mobile Broadband Max work?
It's exactly the same as web'n'walk Plus except you can use voice over the internet (VoIP) software, such as Skype and Jajah.com, which allows you to make phone calls and instant message with people all over the world.

Also with T-mobile you build your own package, so not sure what is advertised The final cost of the total bill determines the handset price. Which is why I've always had W&W Plus and never paid more than a standard £35 pm contract.

Then allow me to enlighten you. If you go, for example here:
http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/Brands/HTC/b509/n447/p27241.aspx#tabsAnchor
you will see an HD2 for sale on contract with T-Mobile. It costs £35 a month, 18-month contract, phone is free, it gives you 700 minutes, "unlimited texts", and "unlimited mobile web". Do you imagine that this deal will give you Web'n'Walk Plus? Obviously, it won't. If you see a T-Mobile deal advertised as "unlimited internet" or "unlimited web", then what that means is that if you pay the amount of money mentioned in the advert, you will get the basic Web'n'Walk package. If you want the "Plus" package then you will have to pay another £5 per month over and above the cost of "unlimited web" to get it.
T-Mobile's own advertising is similar: if you want Web'n'Walk Plus you have to pay £5 a month more than you have to pay for the same phone with the standard Internet package.
Now seriously, this discussion is getting boring, so let's leave it at that.
Never had a problem with T-Mo, even the 2 months I went over 1GB (only by a hundred MB or so). Didn't even hear from them. On the other hand the only horror stories I've read with people getting enormous over-data charges (both local and roaming) have ALL been with Vodafone.
Data was slow at times a year ago but seems ok now. I also get far better reception at home & work on T-Mo with poor/no reception last time I was on Voda, but that's obviously a local issue and will vary, but it was a deciding factor for me..
Likewise despite the T&Cs saying messenger isn't allowed on the baic service, I've always been able to get on no problem.
recently tmobile had a promotional offer which ended in febuary pay and go £10 top up unlimited txt n web.i got the sim because i use it as modem on my shift i can access many sites the only problem i have is msn i dont know if w7 is causing the issue of signing in or tmobile.but when i use the sim on my hd2 msn works fine as long as i untick proxy.i discoverd if the proxy is ticked the auto update of email dosent work or msn so i unticked it.i have used the tmobile sim from streaming to large file downloads they havnt complained although they do have a slower connection then o2.i stopped using o2 they started complaining then they barded me.
i used tmobile sim as modem for few months i think i used more then 3gb
If you go over your plan limit then T-mobile will throttle your usage between 16.00 and 00.00 (midnight) by restricting your access to gprs speed for certain connections (streaming of video is barred etc).
Other than that it's business as usual.
Hello all,
Firstly, thanks for putting together and supporting such a fantastic resource for the HD2 (xda-developers)
Secondly, with all the debate on the worth of the HD2; I've had mine nearly a week and it's been an absolute joy so far. Only problem has been some audio/picture syncing issued on MP4 video. Best phone I've ever owned.
My main question: I have a Vodafone data plan with a fair usage policy of 500MB. What activities will cause me to chew that up fast. I understand that streaming Youtube is probably a big no no. I also read somewhere that the sattelite images on Google maps will eat a chunk. Whar about stuff like constant GPS positioning, does this sort of thing count? Any info appreciated.
Sam
1 - any video downloaded or streamed to your device (any)
2 - any audio downloaded or streamed to your device (purchases, internet radio etc)
3 - a somewhat distant third... regular visits to very large websites - not mobile optimized (full load of engadget 10+ times a day for example)
As said above- large media files streamed or downloaded are the biggest culprits.
All other stuff is small by comparison- Google Maps pages are around 100-300KB so you'd have to go some to use 500MB!
GPS positioning uses negligible data, though keeping GPS on would hammer the battery. Email polling only uses about 4MB per month in addition to the emails themselves. Graphics heavy web pages might use a bit, but even then you are unlikely to exceed your limit.
I don't use mine for any streaming or media downloads but do use it heavily for a lot of other online stuff and I've never used more than 100MB per month.
why dont you just get unlimited data? its only £5 a month.

He's on Vodafone. Even their so-called Unlimited data is capped at 500MB
I have 200MB a month until my speed is capped but I never managed to reach 200MB (ok I don't use youtube or other streaming via my data-plan) but with normal usage (surfing, mails, rss, weather, quickgps) my plan is enough.
Thanks for the advice. Looks like, as long as I don't stream or download, I shouldn't have any trouble.
Slightly derailing the thread, but how do I turn off the GPS?
Actually, from what I've observed so far, you don't have to turn off the GPS. It goes to sleep by itself when you don't use it and wakes up when you need it (launch a program that requires it) that's when it will make a data connection and as said before the data exchanged with the server is very limmited (less than 1kb)

so its being mis-sold then? hmm
It's in the small print.
I kicked up a bit of a fuss when I spoke to Vodafone about their Limited/unlimited data plan. They said you can go over, but don't do it on a regular basis.
You'll get a few 'yellow cards' first.
You can YouTube some stuff, but don't make it habitual.
I'm on Vodafone Ultd internet, i use youtube and BBC iplayer a fair bit. no problems so far.. Had it month and a half.
im on vodafone business, im on 500MB capped, (although they didn't re-apply it properly when i upgraded my phone so ive been charged £380 on my last bill!! Ill be claiming that back) Its a bit of a rip off., £7.50/mnth for 500MB (extra charged at 60p/MB!!) or £20 for 5GB
I Just changed to Tmobile who have a 1gb max on the unlimited. I stuck to my guns saying that I made heavy use of you tube etc, they upgraded it to 3gb maximimum with no extra charge.
Unusually helpful for a mobile company, must have got them on a good day.
BTW it is on one of their new 30 day contracts and I was arranging three of them for me and two friends. The extra 2gb was only offered on one of the phones (mine of course!!!)
