Hello everyone,
I just got a new Galaxy S3 from China today, but it came with many preloaded chinese apps. It is not really branded, only preloaded with several things. I tried restoring phone from configurations, but the applications didn't dissapear.
I would like to flash a clean international versin with no added chinese things. Could you please point me to the right direction?
This is my first Android phone, but I had a Tablet before which I flashed a couple times, so I'm not a complete noob.
Thanks a lot in advance!!!
Cheers,
C.S.
You might go to I9300 International for better specific help over there :good:
Your probably the only one on this forum with one so I don't think anyone knows if any ROMs are compatible with it.. But the root method may still be the same so you can try rooting it and than installing Root explorer (paid) or ES File Explorer (free) to remove them from system/app or just get Titanium Backup (paid) after rooting and remove them that way (best option IMO)
So just head over to the international forums and read their easiest root method.
Best of luck, be careful, those things aren't covered under any warranty if you brick it huh :what:

Thanks for the advice. Is there any way to know what "version" I have? I mean, the phone came from China, but knowing the market, it could be Chinese, Hong Kong, Vietnamese or who knows what.

Hmm pretty much the only info about its build you could compare to others would be under Settings > About device, screenshot that and post it up over on the international forums and ask them if it resembles theirs in any way. Personally I'm pretty positive the ROMs won't be directly compatible and definitely wouldn't flash any of them, but if I personally can't use an Android phone without root so I'd personally try the root method and pray to god my phone booted afterward lol
Tough situation man, curious as to how it goes for you so post back if you try !

From what I read about those Chinese knock-offs they only have like 512MB RAM and almost just as bad in storage capacity.. how can anyone use a phone like that nowadays?
I don't think any ROM will even "fit" on it, sorry to say

Having a factory in China is not the same as selling unbranded GS3s from China. Plus it's known that they're selling knockoffs

You have to confirm your model number, there are many Galaxy S3

Come on, I'm telling you it's good...

I would personally try to flash a standard i9300 ROM onto it. Then you wouldn't have to worry about any sketchy apps that have been added.
There's no guarantee it will work, but if it really is a legit i9300 (which it seems to be), I would imagine the standard international ROM would work on it.

Has anyone actually tried copying out the dialer/phone app from an international ROM and putting it into a US ROM? I did a quick search of the dev and general Tab forums and haven't seen a mention of it.
Is the limitation for not making calls in the modem or kernel, or is it just the lack of the software?

I *think* it is just the lack of software.
Interesting. I may have to look into this, compare an international ROM to the stock AT&T one.
Are either of you actually reading these forums?
The AT&T Tab has already been hacked to make calls.
The TMo Tab can be made to make calls, but you'll lose 3G.

Dave

It's been tried. So has just flashing the modem. Neither worked.
Yeah I've seen those posts, I was just just wanting to see if there was any way to do it without having to flash another ROM onto my Tab. I'm guessing it's pretty deeply ingrained into the framework or something.
(Mainly wanted to ask because my quick search did not pull up results of retrofitting Phone capability into a "crippled" US ROM)
I dont know if this has been pointed out before but in my tmo tab when using root explorer and I look in system/app all the phone apps are already installed. They are just being blocked, is there a way to modify them to work?

+1
The dialer is there and I think it is installed but is disabled somehow. Trying to bring it up just displays a message on the screen saying the dialer application is not supported on this device. I would be very interested in just modifying this ROM to re-enable that feature so flashing the EURO ROM isn't necessary. I am sure someone will figure it out before me but I am looking into it too. I am just so scared of doing stuff with this thing because for some reason it feels like uncharted territory and I am afraid of unknown consequences. Once the dialer is working a simple IMEI and serial number change will remove any restrictions on T-Mobile's end.

Do you have an SPT box? You need the hardware this isn't a pure software solution.
http://www.sptbox.com/Products/Default.aspx
And it isn't cheap so I haven't decided whether or not I want it that bad. But I have been reading their forums and this product can in fact change the IMEI and serial number. It has been tested as sucessful on just about every GSM model of the TAB there is.
I just realized this is all way off topic. The OP is talking about enabling the dialer software and not changing the IMEI. Lets continue this in another thread.
Finally picked up the Rogers Branded Xperia Arc this morning. Unlocked it through the htccode.com folks.
In the box, there's the requisite charger and cable, HDMI cable and a set of headphones. It also includes a 16GB microSD card. BTW, the phone is running v181 of the software.
Overall, the phone is pretty unique. It feels quite light for its size and the curve in the back doesn't feel too weird. The screen looks quite sharp, but I haven't had a chance to play around with it that much! BTW, looks like the SE skin isn't too intrusive (unlike Motoblur) but I don't think it's as good as HTC Sense. BTW, there is the option to enable WiFi hotspot (a key requirement for me)!
I've attached some pics below.
Got it rooted with Gingerbreak! Installed the apk on the SD card, installed it and then ran Gingerbreak with no issues.
Anyone other Canadians with Arcs on this forum?

If you're rooted, you can always use Titanium Backup to strip out some or all of the bloatware.
Not a perfect solution, obviously but it's better than nothing.

You need to Flash a generic ROM to get rid of bootscreen.
I'm new to Andriod "Smartphone" as you can tell from how many post I have.
So, I bought out the phone.
There are things I need to remove "bloatwares" from Rogers and other apps.
So, rooting the phone gives you access to superuser and I see that apps can be removed.

Off my boss at work! - I guess it has the US ICS on it... but its really nice.
Any problems...
Are there any downsides to using a US rom?
For example:
Keyboard Layouts
Access to Apps from the Play Store
Access to other content from the Play Store
Other regonalization issues
On the flip sides, apart from the benefits of ICS itself, what would I gain from switching to a US rom as a UK user?
That's a pretty generic question, sorry, but I'd love ICS and would wait, but if there's no downsides I'll get it now.

Made the same switch myself and glad i did
keyboard layouts - pretty much the same apart from the £ and $
Play Store - Not had any issues myself and the prices comes up in £
being on a US rom means your going to get ota updates quicker than the uk
I briefly installed the US ROM, but quickly changed to team EOS due to the US locale annoying me!
- US Keyboard Layout
- US date format
- US English spelling (Damn annoying with autocorrect!)
I also need to occasionally write in German, so the lack of other languages (except Spanish IIRC) was also a problem for me!
I have been running the US ROM since HC 3.1 - not had any issues really
I thought the UK language keyboard stuff was in ICS now? if not then I havent noticed an issue at all - market is still all english anyway - it doesn't go on ROM region for the apps
So at the risk of being stupid...
So at the risk of being stupid... I'm guessing it's possible to switch back should I hit any locale issues?
The way I read it if I flash to a US Rom, I should be able to flash to the UK variant when it is released (should I decide to bother).
Assuming I do go ahead:
1. If I stay on the US Rom will OTA updates work?
2. Similarly, if I can then switch to UK ICS, should OTA updates continue to work for this too?
Apologies for the newbie posts, I have been reading the boards for a long time, but what I've remembered in my addled brain has left me somewhat confused.
TIA.

I am starting this thread for the G920I model of the S6. Codenamed "Zerofltedv".
Where is G920I Available?
- Singapore
- India
- Australia
- USA
- Latin American countries
- North America
The S6 comes with regional locks for particular countries, And need to be activated with a sim specific for that region.
What is this thread about?
- For discussion.
- Online and local availability.
- Isssue discussion.
- Custom ROM development specific for this variant.
- Pricing
- Accessories
Curious to see which country with the G920I model gets updates first so I can flash that region's firmware in Odin. Australia will obviously be last as usual so I'm keen to get off this firmware ASAP and get onto one that doesn't block auto-rotate in the Gallery app

Apparently it is not a normal feature and samsung has been made aware of this issue and they are working on it. Saw this today on the xda channel.
Whew, just got this today.
Are there any custom ROMs for the S6 that are in development?

Nothing yet. Just the root. No roms.. Should take a month plus for proper custom rom support.

How did that happen! That is very sad to hear.. I haven't rooted my device will root when custom roms are available.
So, I've been systemlessly debloating the stock rom and one app got me wondering, what is it? system/priv-app/Houston . The app icon is the standard android one, and it doesn't seem to be a interactable app in any way. Does anyone know what it's for?
It might be worth grabbing a hold of:
./system/priv-app/Houston/Houston.apk
We can then unpack the APK and see what its for.
Sorry I can't help more, I don't have a Oneplus (8), the stock situation in the UK is as grim as other EU/US regions (12gb/256gm model).

I'm not really qualified to check out the app myself, but if you or anyone else feels like disscting the apk and check it out, here is a link to it. Its only about 2MB so maybe it's easilly determined what it is..?
thanks!
