Has anyone been successful in installing the browser.apk from an ICS build onto the Nexus 7? I tried dropping the browser.apk from CM9 into /system/app and fixing permissions, but it just force closes immediately.
I need the old browser, Chrome doesn't cut it for me since bookmarklets don't work.

I suggest you adapt.
according to the google nexus 7 manual that you can download on google books, it says you can download the old browser via google play. i havent tried it yet since my nexus 7 wont arrive till next week, but maybe have a look in google play?
theres also ICS browser+ in google play, which is more or less the stock ICS browser but with more features.
..
If I'm not mistaken, once a build for the N7 is built from A.O.S.P the browser will not be chrome..
Chrome isn't open sourced yet.

Nope. ICS Browser+ also immediately FC's on start. I think I might have to go with Dolphin. Sigh.

Try this one. I ripped it from the 4.1.1 build from the Galaxy Nexus.
Let me know if it works or not. Also, make sure you're at 4.1.1

Nope, still no joy, crashes after signin. Perhaps we're missing an odex file or something?
I've been looking for this too, mainly because I want a full screen browser and I don't think chrome can do that. I've looked in all the settings and found nothing

I'd also love to know the answer to this. Have side-loaded flash 11.1 which sort of works with Dolphin but would prefer the 'native' ICS browser as I think the compatability would be better - at least until a Jellybean version of iPlayer comes out.
Skyfire will play Flash videos on the Nexus 7 without installing Flash but they're recompressed first on their servers.
I too would like the option of using the stock Android browser with my N7. If the Galaxy Nexus can run it under Jelly Bean 4.1.1 why can't the N7? At least give us the option of sideloading it.
When startin the N7 it said something about if you want flash in Chrome, dl the Chrome in Play Store. Have not tried this.
I don't Understand why they shipped it with chrome to begin with. The aosp jellybean browser is much smoother and faster then chrome. I tried one ROM that included it and it worked so much better. Unfortunately some other things didn't work right in that ROM.
Found that with flash 11.1.115.11 fullscreen video works on iPlayer using the latest Aurora build of Firefox (you can download the APK in Chrome from the Mozilla website). As it's a nightly build a few things are still clearly pre-release (e.g. thumbnail tab previews are corrupt) but the browser itself is impressive. Worth a try and less risk of breaking something if the standard browser isn't easy to install.

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but Chrome now works with the 120 DPI setting, and I must say it is a really nice browser, will definitely switch from the stock one.
Do you think they will drop the stock browser for Chrome? I think they might on Jelly Bean.
Also, I had it before on my fire but it takes so much space 60 megs of internal storage. So I uninstalled it. Also NO FLASH.

Same thing here. I posted a logcat over in the Gederom dev thread but I'm not sure it's a ROM issue. Sounds more widespread.
I have noticed major memory leaks with Chrome... not on my KF, but on my unrooted galaxy note get n7000. After a couple hours in the background, it takes over the system

Count me also. Hope we get a fix but will go back to Firefox or Dolphin in the meantime. Disappointed in the stock browser as it always seems hesitant/slow for me - I'd love to use it.
Anyone solve this yet?

I used to have the same problem when using the 120 DPI setting with the beta version of chrome, if switched back to 160 it would work just fine. Finally this out-of-beta version works fine with 120 DPI.
Not sure what might be different, I tried multiple options but nothing worked until now.
Dolphin seems to have more features than Chrome. Chrome keeps cropping out when I was use it.
I dont know why but what ever browser i use it eventually gets to the point where the browser just hangs not crash, it just wont load links i click on or refresh the page its almost like if the internet connection has gone, it is definatley not a connection issue as my pc, laptop and ps3 have no issues. Its getting really annoying now, i have used various roms from aokp, asus hydro, i am currently using aokp build 40. I have used every browser, stock, chrome maxthon, dolhin hd, xscope, it doesnt seem to do it on firefox beta but its horrible and until the firefox team try and make it even slighty resemble the desktop version im not using it.
Anyone had this issue?

I've been keeping Dolphin continually updated and my Flash still works. Out of curiosity I thought that I'd ask if I'm the only one since I haven't seen anyone else mention it and I've been wondering why I have no problems. Both Dolphin and Flash originally made their way onto my Nexus 7 via Titanium Backups from my old tablet, so I was wondering if this was the key.
If you used a titanium backup from a different tablet then dolphin browser probably doesn't realize that you're on jelly bean.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
That was my immediate assumption, but I took a look at a crash report generated by Dolphin and it properly identifies my Android version as 4.1.1.
Just restored the latest version using tibu from a backup of it in the razr and flash seems to be working good along with pinch to zoom. I also removed market association so it can't check updates.
Sent from my Nexus 7
Sweet, so it looks like all you need to do is restore a backup from a non-JB device. It seems like you should be ok installing updates assuming things continue the way they are.
Lucky ,an dolphin HD is my favorite browser by far but I am getting by with ugly fox beta will have to see if I have a old backup from my atrix would be nice

8.7.0 as of now.
lol, these threads are usually annoying, but I'm desperate!
Tried Ocean browser but it's fugly with that grey color scheme (couldn't find a way to change it). It matters to me since I'll be browsing the net a lot.
Dolphin is the one I'm settled with at the moment and so far it's nice.
Will give Opera Beta a try.
Any others people use?

Definitely the best browser. Its android browser. Yes you need root. Once you do its very simple to install. Its the smoothest and does flash full screen videos without issues.
If you don't want to root, naked browser is also very good.
so far I'm loving firefox, it has adblock and it's smoother in flash videos. =D
+1 for Boat Browser, very fast and stable, supports flash and is very lightweight with about 3mb in size.

Chrome is the best browser, for me
Works fast (after the V8 Javascript update), and I haven't had it crash yet that I can recall (I do wonder what people are doing to have it crash "repeatedly" though since I haven't had any issues).
AOSP Browser comes in second for me. Anything else isn't an option for me unless it syncs with Google.

Chrome for almost everything. I use the "other devices" feature several times a day. It's great being able to instantly pull up any tab open on the desktop, laptop, tablet, or other phone.
Firefox Beta or Dolphin Beta for stuff that requires flash. Don't really use AOSP browser anymore.

How do you get Dolphin Beta to actually play Flash? for me whenever I try and enable it, Dolphin tells me it's naughty and refuses to let me force-enable it!
edit: I have installed the Flash APK already, it's just Dolphin Beta fighting against me...

That's pretty good - posting while dead.
If you insist on staying unrooted, then your only option is to install a different browser from the Google Play store
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=web+browser&c=apps
Getting just the .apk file for the AOSP stock browser and side-loading it won't work - the pre-installed BrowserProviderProxy.{apk, odex} applications in the stock ROM will prevent it from working correctly.
FWIW, the AOSP browser only "kinda" works even on a stock ROM (even when BrowserProviderProxy.{apk, odex} have been removed from /system/app) - it freezes quite a lot - especially when browsing XDA ... LOL
But I know where you are coming from - Chrome really needs to be able to do text reflow on a 7" tablet (and IMO the bookmark thumbnails are much nicer in the AOSP browser too).
