Question about warranty - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Hey guys, I have a Verizon Galaxy Tab 7.7 that I purchased used from someone else. I was wondering how the warranty service works and if it is based on the IMEI number and do I need a receipt? I do not have a receipt or anything. But my device has a band on the screen that is lower brightness than the rest and the black rings on low brightness. I always use my tablet in the dark so these problems are very evident to me.
Also, do they just replace the part with the problem or do they replace the whole device with a refurbished device? And do I have to pay for shipping?

Normally warrenty only ever is available to original purchasors, i believe that second hand buyers have no contract of sale with a supplier or manufacturer under law. Repairs are normally on a return to base basis, which means you pay, and normally if they were doing any assessment it would be on a economics basis, ie cheapest solution. If you achieve a warrenty replacement i would be very suprised, sorry

I recently went to a Samsung Service Center (in Singapore) with my wife's Galaxy Nexus which keeps rebooting by itself. I bought the thing second hand so have no proper documents for it--but they accepted the device anyway, after checking the serial number to make sure that it is still within the warranty period (it is). Moral of the lesson: no harm trying; at least contact them to ask.

If you bought the phone off of eBay, AND are not an AT&T/Cingular customer, they will not replace the phone... what is wrong with it...?

Very few warranties cover dropped devices... There are a few though, but you have to have the warranty in place on a new device and there are some caveats to them... As for the eBay seller, I doubt that they will offer any real assistance after 4 months of usage... There are a few other options that may be available, but they all concern questionable ethics and morality, so I won't even mention them...

Yep; you're essentially screwed. When you buy something from eBay, you rarely get a manufacturer's warranty, especially if the seller is an individual as opposed to an eBay Seller (business). Even if they are a legitimate business, I too doubt they will warranty any electronic device that has been dropped.
Next time do two things--put the phone in a protective case and use a screen protector; both things are inexpensive insurance against damage.

You cannot ask your friend to have it done, since that phone is not listed on his/her account... That is why you were originally asked for the phone number... You have to buy a new phone or pay to have your phone serviced... You can contact HTC and send them the phone and pay the cost... There is no legal way that you can have the phone repaired under any warranty agreement, after you have already damaged the product...
I hate to say it, since it has already been said... you will have to either pay for the repair, or buy a new phone...

Wise up, people... the phone is utimately warranted by HTC as the manufacturer of the device. They prefer to route things through the carriers because it's easier that way, but you can deal directly with HTC.
To the OP: All you can do is contact HTC and plead your case. You may need to be persistent, but they do have non-carrier and out-of-warranty service. May take 2 or 3 tries to get to someone who knows this.
Oh, and despite what some have said, if you bought if off eBay it still carries the one year manufacturer's warranty (whether or not it will cover having dropped it is another issue). They track the warranty period by S/N. I recently had one -- that I purchased off eBay -- replaced, no questions asked.

Pm me I work at the warranty exchange center in 1000 oaks california. I might be able to help. Ill give you the need t know to get the phone replaced. One drop should not caused it to trip. I've dropped the hellout of mine and it works fine.

I'm working in pc business and when we get non working device we just check for visual damages and if dont see any we bring device to manufacturer or distributor and usually we get new one (if not expired warranty time)

Screen crapped out within a week.

Had my Note for exactly one week when yesterday I woke up, turn on my Note and notice a big green line going down the left side of the screen. The rest of the screen is now very dim and barely readable even with the screen brightness cranked up to the max. Did battery pull, then factory reset with no success. Never dropped the phone, I haven't rooted the phone, the only thing I did to it was apply the OTA update to 2.36 the day I got it. Everything else is stock, so it seems to be a hardware issue.
Got the Note through a 3rd party reseller on Amazon.com. When I called them about it they said I had to go thru Samsung warranty and they will only exchange the item if it was broken the first time I tried to turn it on. So I guess I'm on my own.
Called Samsung warranty and was told that since it was an international phone it is not supported by Samsung USA. So it appears I am SOL.
ExpansysUSA on the other hand has a 15 day return policy for any issues and they will help you deal with warranty after the 15 day window is up.
Needless to say I'm depressed...Any suggestions for a course of action is appreciated.

only thing i can think of is if you can still get a squaretrade warranty. I think you may have to wait 60 days before they'll accept a claim, but it may be a better option than having an expensive paper weight.

Ask the seller where he purchased the phone from, ship your Note to Samsung in the country of origin. If he bought it in HK, send it to samsung in HK.
They won't be able to tell you it's an international purchase, you are allowed to travel the world with your phone and keep your warranty.

I agree. I had a Polish version from hantec. It had about 3 dead pixels with a line going through them (green colour). Called up Samsung UK and they said I had to contact handtec.
IM sure if you call up the skewing branch where your note is from, you can always send it back to them to get a replacement if you have only had the phone for less than 28 days.

I'll ask them about it again today when their customer service lines open. The lady that I talked to yesterday coulldn't tell me where they got it from and said that I should ask Samsung International. Hopefully I get someone a little more capable on the line next time...
In the meantime I initiated a return authorization request thru Amazon yesterday to see if this will motivate the seller to be more cooperatve.
If that doesn't work I guess I can file for a claim next.

I heard good things about handtec, but I'm buying a Squaretrade warrenty just incase. Their warranty's only covers up to $600 though. So if they have to replace your phone, they just cut you a check for $600....the warranty cost's $124, so your really only getting $476 back. You can buy displays on ebay already, but I'm not sure how hard they would be to install.

The Vendor insists I contact Samsung for warranty repair/replacement. Samsung Latin America in this case. Contacted Samsung Latin America and was told that Samsung products bought thru Amazon.com aren't covered.
I'm tired of getting the run around, I'm going to file a claim with Amazon and see if that works.
It is very unfortunate. If something happens to my Note then I am not going to be able to claim the warranty too as I got it delivered from outside the country. Overall this is negative PR for Samsung that they fuss to give International warranty.

Did you pay via Ppal or Credit Card ? If you did, contest the charge stating the item had issues from the beginning that the seller did not resolve. When VisaMC hits them with a chargeback, I will bet the 3rd party vendor will say, OK, send it back and we will replace it. If they purchase direct from Samsung, they can get it fixed. Did the items description explicitly say NO WARRANTY ?

I paid with a credit card. I emailed them one last time telling them Samsung will not cover replacement/repair and asking that they replace my busted Note with a new one. If that doesn't work I'll file a claim with Amazon. I'd rather not intiate a chargeback...yet.
I think you get 45 days to contest a charger? IM sure it varries by the credit card company

Got an email from Amazon saying that my claim is denied since the sellers page says that there are no returns on cell phones.
I submitted an appeal stating that the sellers page also says that all products sold by them are covered by manufacturers warranty. Even though Samsung USA and Samsung Latin America won't cover it.
If this doesn't work I'll call my CC company and see about getting a chargeback done.
In the meantime I think I'll order a new Note from the better sellers out there. What do you guys recommend? Expansys USA or Handtec?
Try going through Newegg. If it's bad within 30 days they will refund or replace. Otherwise Handtec is great, but if you need warranty ......
You shouldn't be getting/buying phone from on-line sellers such as on Amazon. It's not true that mobile phone (in general) has an international warranty.
You should really wait for an official release in your country.

Well he did say a big green line, due to the pentile display it should be like 1 subpixel in thickness not a "big green line" as per OP.

Samsung USA Will Not Repair Cracked Screen if International Variant (G935F)

I have an international G935F phone that I use on Straight Talk (AT&T). I took it to the Samsung USA service center to get the screen replaced and they said they don't touch international phones because of different internals/parts. I also called the 800 number and they told me the same thing. Is this accurate? I know US and international use different processors (Exynos and Snapdragon) but I would think screen replacement would be pretty much the same with the same parts.
Policy is policy I guess.

Yes, wasn't an issue whatsoever. The LCDs are identical.

I have purchased 2 S7 Edge International versions from Amazon - fulfilled by amazon, but 3rd party sellers, one a Dual Sim, and one single SIM. The product listing was somewhat vague, just listing International Warranty, may not be covered in the USA. So, I contacted the seller through Amazon support, and the response was, The warranty is International, HOWEVER, you'l have to send back the phone to Samsung the phone originally came from!!!. I ran Samsung info to find one is a Middle Eastern version with a model code ending in EG (Egypt), and the other is all in Chinese, even the default language in case of a hard reset is chinese (or Korean, or or or).
I've sort of accepted that there is no warranty, and hope no product fault happens while I have the phone. Here is the email from the seller:

Yeah we take the risk by buying these. I wouldn't even bother trying to deal with the logistics of sending these back to their origin for service. A local 3rd party repair shop will gladly take your money. Just make sure you choose one known for high quality work. My screen looks like new again after having been replaced. But again, very expensive exercise.

When I broke my S6 Edge screen, I sent it in for repair. When it came back, I found that in the process they had broken the speakerphone function, so I sent it back again, and this time was sent a new/refurbished device.
My point is that Samsung USA might not want to get involved with an international device, because they are aren't really set up to replace it if something goes wrong.
Just a thought, nothing more!

Don't know about the S7, but I recall that for one of my prior phones (The S3, maybe) there were enough differences in the internal layout that while the screen was functionally identical, the ribbon connector mounting location was different, and the parts weren't interchangeable for that reason.

To be honest, whatever the internals may be, all the versions are made, guaranteed, and endorsed by samsung - they should honour "international" warranty to the very common and basic definition of the word. Even Blackberry has set-up dedicated phone and warrnaty lines for the Priv. I have had a iphone bought in the UK off a craigslist equivalent website replaced without question at an apple store in NYC. The problem was real, I wasn't the original buyer, the "genius" wasn't bothered, was very apologetic that they didn't have the UK version in-store, but that they would have it in 2 days - left with a new phone for a 8 months old 2nd hand used phone. I'm no apple fan at all, but their customer support is beyond excellent. I know this is all factored in the price apple charges, but the S7 is no cheapie either.
Bottom line, it is pretty poor of Samsung to offer such a restrictive warranty.

That is not the case with this phone.
This is an older post but I still wanted to respond to it. Today I experienced the same issue. The front and back screens are broken and my S7 edge is stuck in boot loop mode but after I pitched a fit over here with Samsung USA, they agreed to purge and force the IMEI number to be accepted by their system. They are to contact me in 24 - 72 hours once the IMEI number has been registered. I threatened with returning all of their phones to them and posting negative feedback on their facebook page. Within minutes they offered the above solution.

After a couple weeks, I realized that vibration (whether from the phone itself or the surface it was on) as well as applying pressure to the top right side of the screen or face would cause this to come and go. I even figured out I could shake it and have this happen. So something was loose. I chatted with samsung germany, and even after explaining this to them, they still had me factory reset the phone, which I did. That didn't work, so they wanted me to send it in. It took me a couple weeks to find a replacement phone, but I did and I sent my S7 Edge to Samsungs service center two Fridays ago.
They just sent me an e-mail telling me that it isn't covered by warranty because this was caused by rooting the phone. This is clearly a hardware issue. Furthermore, I thought in Europe it didn't matter if you rooted your phone. I've only ever had to send in my LG G4 for warranty, and they had no problem with it being rooted. What gives? What are my rights?
I feel like deciding never to buy a Samsung product again, and I'm in the market for a new tablet. So on a related note, any better tablets out there?

Rooting a Samsung phone has always voided the warranty. Some countries strictly enforce this other do not.
If it was a motherboard problem, the service centre would not have noticed the rooting flag and replaced the hardware with no questions asked. But since your problem involved the screen not the motherboard, service centres have the option of enforcing the warranty at their discretion.
You can either ask for the phone back and use it as is or pay for the repair.
Any rooted phone voids any warranty the manufacturer carries.
When you root your phone, you get these messages that pop up telling you that if you continue, you will probably void your warranty.
They put those warnings there to let you know before you start.
I know my replies can be long, but would rather give too much info, than not enough.
In Europe, your statutory warranty cannot be refused just because of the phone being rooted. That warranty, however, is with the business that sold you the phone, not with Samsung directly. Maybe try and go back to the seller (though you may have to argue your case to make them comply with their legal obligations!).
I'm from Portugal.
My phone is rooted I had to send it to service for repair and had zero problems.

so I would have to deal with Amazon Germany? That is a freightening thought, since they just had so many mess ups at the end of last summer that I actually cancelled my membership.
Do you have any law or other thing I could point to that would show them they have to replace the phone?

I bought mine via craigslist. Warranty is still good for another year but it was not transferred to me. How can I convince Google to send me an unlocked bootloader? Phone is in perfect condition with everything working. Came with original box.

A warranty replacement will most likely end up giving you the same device but refurbished as the purpose of warranties is to fix your device/item with the exact one but without the defect.
To me it looks like your asking if google can give you a non-verizon one in exchange for your Verizon edition. That's not how a warranty exchange works. As much as I would like to change the color of my 2 XL, I'm stuck with what I CHOSE.
Why not try calling Google themselves and ask them so you can speak with them directly?

You can get an unlocked one for the same price as the Verizon model.
It doesn't make it okay to buy a red car through a private seller and then ask the dealer to give you a blue one because you don't like the blue, although the red one is perfectly fine. He chose the Verizon one, he's stuck with it.

Point taken. Your previous statement had nothing to do with his situation. He bought it off of Craigslist because I'm assuming didn't want to pay out right for it from Google. And Verizon doesn't sell unlocked ones. Like I said I have good credit and still couldn't get approved through Google financing but because I'm a Verizon customer in good standing all it took for me was to walk in the door

The warranty on the device is valid only for the person who originally bought it. Since you are not the original buyer, the warranty is null and void. Requesting an exchange because of the bootloader being locked would not be honored even if you were the original purchaser of the device; bootloader locking is not a defect.
You're not going to be able to convince Google to swap devices. So, you either deal with what you have, or sell it on Swappa and get something else.
What have we learned from this boys and girls? Never to buy smartphones off Craigslist. Because if you get lucky, you just end up not being able to unlock a bootloader. If you get really lucky, the IMEI is blacklisted and the police confiscate the device because it was stolen, leaving you out of pocket the amount you spent, with nothing to show for it.
I very much made this mistake in Australia with getting a nexus 6P... It had the horrendous battery issue and the person I bought it off would NOT give me a receipt... So even though the phone was under warranty... It was null and void. I made numous calls to google... To the place the device was bought from... But they couldn't do anything. I bought myself a pixel xl 2 and I got the guy to give me the receipt and proof of purchase. You will not be able to swap the device for an unlocked model... If you have the receipt and it needed to be replaced, they would give you the exact same model/locked to Verizon. Even if it would not a new device... Sorry mate, you are out of luck indefinitely

Warranty on pixel 2 does not even go by the owner. It goes by the imei. So long as that number is not out of warranty from the original date of purchase and the phone has not been blacklisted by verizon or google the warranty is not void. They will only ask your name and address and such if they are going to send a replacement. They will ask for a first name when tou are first begin to conversate with them, but will not ask full name unless they are going to replace phone.
They will not do it just to unlock your bootloader. There needs to be a legitimate problem with the phone.

This Limited Warranty is only valid and enforceable in locations the Phone is sold and will apply only if you purchased your Phone from Google or its authorized resellers.

The OP did not buy the phone from Google, Best Buy, Verizon, or any other authorized reseller and thus the warranty is null and void. The only value the IMEI has is determining the phone's date of manufacture. The warranty however starts on the date of purchase, which could be months later.

This is not true because many phones are purchased by one person and given or purchased by another. I know this because I purchased a phone for my sister with my credit card and then she paid me for it, so she bought it from me and she had to send it in for an RMA.
When you call google they want imei number. That is what detirmines if a phone is under warranty or not. Google uses imei to verify the phones end of warranty date.
Think about the process if younhave ever RMAd a device that was google nexus or pixel. They want the imei number and then only ask for your full name when they ask for a mailing address.

In your case you bought direct from Google and gave the device as a gift, even if you did get paid back, which is why the warranty still applied to your phone. The OP bought his secondhand, off Craigslist. The moment money exchanged hands the warranty became null and void. The OP pointed out the warranty did not transfer over in his opening post. He therefore must have contacted Google, who then told him the warranty was invalid.
Google being liberal with the warranty does not invalidate its existence. We are all bound by its terms and conditions.

Which means whoever the seller on Craigslist was probably wasn't the orinal owner with original receipt of sale. Or more than likely the imei isn't clear

The warranty for the phone itself specifies that the warranty only applies if purchased from Google or one of its authorized resellers, e.g. Best Buy, Verizon, or Amazon. Since Craigslist is not an authorized reseller, the warranty is void, period.
On a side note, if you head to Google's support pages and start the process of a RMA, they require an order number. This is to ensure that the phone was purchased from Google or an authorized reseller. So is Google being nice and not verifying the phone was even purchased before authorizing the RMA, or are people simply omitting the fact the order number is required when mentioning that they received a RMA?

Craigslist isn't a seller... As much as it sells stuff... If OP had got a receipt and signed into there name..legally the device is owned by them. But because they didnt. It's not even technically there's as no receipt was made or anything. If they wanted to they could report the device as stolen and there would be nothing you could do about it.
Which leads back to my life lesson about Craigslist in my first post in this thread.

I got my P2XL from eBay... When i called Google about the AA issue, i even told them i got it from eBay, even emailed them the purchase receipt...
They still were going to RMA my phone and told me the warranty was still good. So I'm not totally sure if the see an eBay seller as an authorized dealer, but they surely treated it as such
