On my Droid X I had emails pulse vibrate with a green led light. Texts would do a long vibrate with blue led. I cannot figure out how to set this up on my S3 and it is driving me crazy. In a perfect world I would have even a different led light and vibrate for Gmail vs work mail. Any help is greatly appreciated.

In my experience with the phone you can change the type of vibration, but its associated with everything. You can however go into email accounts and specify if you want it to vibrate of not, and which tone you would like to associate with it.
Once we get lightflow working it'll be possible. For now there's some bugs that the American SGS3s show (GGBBRR instead of RRBBGG, constant green light when off).

You're going to need to use a program called "light flow" once it's updated to include the S3. It does everything you want. I use it on my Galaxy Nexus without issue but there are lots of bugs with the S3 that the guy is working on. It'll be updated in due time.

Hello everyone,
Got a Bell Atrix 4G, unlocked it and I am using on Rogers network. So far, it is working well.
I am having a problem setting Notification Light. I tried the built in notification light under Settings and a few different notification light apps from market. I used to get a green light for email before but I don't get it anymore after playing with other free apps. I just can't figure this out. I put my phone on vibration mode at work so I would love to have notification lights working.
What I need is different lights for Missed calls, Email, SMS. Has anyone dealt with this issue?
Any help will be much appreciated and thank you!
I use the app light flow for that. Gives me total control over the LED. I have different colors flash for different notifications.
I use Light Flow https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflow
and it handles a ton of apps and uses a TON of color combinations.
Worth the $1.
haha, i was going to start this topic today. I use blue for my Trillian notifications, Purple for yahoo mails.
will try the light app suggested above.
Thanks!
Thank you guys! Yes, "Light Flow" makes it work. Please ensure you turn on "Setting > Display > Notification LED".
Light Flow does not work correctly on the ATRIX AT ALL. I had low battery warnings going off when the battery was fully charged, no charge LED ON option, no charging LED, only discharging WTF?
Hello everyone how do I turn of the notification led please?.
Never seen a option
great just what i need for the miss to see this blinking in the night an am in trouble lol. I wander the impact this has on the battery, and what exactly causes it to blink?

The impact on battery life should be absolutely minimal. It blinks when a application sent a notification with a LED-request to the phone. Usually, you can turn this off in the application in question.
For example, Gmail lets the LED blink green when a new E-mail was recieved, Twidryod lets it blink blue. In both programs, you can deactivate the LED-notification in the settings of the program.
None of my apps (incl gmail) have any LED options, and I've never seen the LED flash at all. Not for calls, sms, email or anything.
Could be under sound, pulse notification light?

Try Light Flow app to see if LED is working or not
Well I've got LED pulse enabled in display settings but it's not working, even with Light Flow test mode.
Is there a trick I'm missing or is it buggered?

Is your LED ON, pulsing or OFF while the phone is charging?
Mine is OFF
Also the LED is pulsing when I get an email, but off if I get a notification from the agenda.
Is this normal behaviour?
Care to share the solution buddy ?
Others may have the issue as well .
It didn't seem to be working for me either, but now it is.
I installed Light Flow, just to run the test, and that seems to have fixed it. Running the test didn't help particularly (you need to turn the screen off during the test, and the LED only flashed once), but once enabled I get a subtle green LED with an unread email in my Gmail inbox.
I didn't change any of the settings in Light Flow or on my phone apart enabling Light Flow in Accessibility as the app requests when it starts up.
Hope that helps someone.

Just done the same, much better now.
Strange that there is not any control of this without installing the app
I read online how to enable it, not sure how true it is.
Settings > Display > Pulse (something like that, there should be a check box)
Apparently it's disabled on stock, you have to enable it like that first.
Don't know if it works, worth a shot right?
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
AOKP (Milestone 1 - 4.1.2)
Matrix Kernel (24.0 - CFS)
Ondemmand (Screen On) (800/100)
Wheatley (Screen Off) (400/100)
Deep Idle (N/A - Deadline)
BLX (N/A - Inverted Apps)
Black Exodus (Stock Voltage)
Stock work only with sms. Light flow is very good !
so by 4.2 default, led notifications only work with sms messages? really? seems a bit daft. i'm sure on the gnex i had for a while using stock i got led flashes for missed calls tweets etc
I have just received the Nexus4 and was intrigued about this led light. I have seen in screen options a ticker which is called Notification ligth, which is marked. I tried to call myself from home but the LED did not light, so I have tried sending me an email and it has started to blink in white.
Maybe I had no patience after calling me or it just work for some notifications. I shall investigate it further.
Hope this can help you
I've been using Light Manager so far. I can only specifiy the Color for SMS. If i turn Chose gmail to Flash red and missed calls orange i dont get any notification for a missed call and only a White one for gmail. Same for any other Color.
Hi,
It works for me (stock) :
SMS (Handcent)
Mail : Gmail
Whatsapp and probably more... I would say try to disable/enable led notification.
Mine only flashes green for new gmail and that seems to be it. Light flow test did nothing, even with screen off.

Does any else have a issue with their LED Notification Light not working?
No light when charging, or SMS, or Email, Missed Call, Low Battery... never lights up. Almost thought they forgot to install the LED until I used LightFlow to test it. And even then it only works when the screen is off, once the power button is pressed to turn the screen on then LED goes off, even though I set LightFlow to clear notification Manually. (LightFlow was just used to test if the LED was installed/functional.)
Uninstalled LightFlow, send myself a couple test emails and text(from another phone) and There was no LED notification light, just the notification sound.
Really hoping this is a software issues so I don't have to request a replacement device from Google...
Edit/Update: I'm pretty sure this is a software related issue and not hardware, as the LED is there and functions (with the help of 3rd party app, which we should not have to use) - So I'm trying to get a poll here of how many people have issues with the LED Notification light not working. Something to report to Google/Bug Report.

I believe the reason is that the software has not been updated to be completely compatible with 4.2+

Mine doesn't work either. I tried LightFlow and while it did light up the LED for some things, but not all that I selected, it was too faint to see, have to be in total darkness to see it.
The led isn't supposed to flash when the screen is on. Its been this way with every nexus.

But does your LED work when the screen is off? Mine and the OP's don't unless you use a third party app.

Is the Notification Light activated under display settings?
Mine worked, but not really well, I only saw it once when sending myself a test mail. Now I'm using Light Flow, which works nearly perfect (sometimes it doesn't seem to work until I enable the screen for a second and then disable it again)

Pulse notification light is checked
Im having the same problem. My led doesnt seem to come on no matter what. I know it worked out of the box because I have seen it light up with light flow but now im wondering if it quit completely and if I should do an RMA.
Mine has been working fine. It's white for TXT's, green for a lot of other things like FB and whatsapp
Yes the "Pulse notification light" option is checked.
I woke today with 6 New emails, 4 text messages, and 1 missed call... No LED Notification light was on, blinking or doing anything.
There not being a notification light is bugging the heck out me, 'cause I depend on them when my phone is on silent at work so I'm able to know there is a message waiting without having to stop what Im doing to turn the screen on every 5 min.

Try 'Blink'
Try the app 'Blink' very simple and its works for my N4
are you waiting 10 seconds before turning the phone on? Thats how long it takes before it blinks again. Whoever programmed the LED truly hates LED notifications because he made it blink so slowly and dimly that nobody could possibly notice it.

Yup, sat there watching the phone for a good 2-3 min after hearing the Notification sound for new email / text. (screen off)
Not sure if its suppose to or not, but I don't even get a LED Notification light when the phone is charging or charged (have to turn phone on to check if the phone is done charging.) Past devices I've had used the LED to notify of charging/charged.
It's normal that it doesn't glow when charging. I really can recommend Light Flow, then you can customise the notification as you wish (the free version is good, I bought the full version because I need steam support, but for normal use there is no need to buy it)

Ok, so my notification light wouldnt work no matter what. I uninstalled sms popup and now light flow works like it should. I guess the sms popup was somehow blocking light flow from allowing it to activate.
No notification light shows while charging, hence why when you charge the phone when it's off, it shows an animation on the screen. It should for calls, texts, emails, etc. though. Mine works. It even shows blue for facebook and white for texts/emails. Not sure why it wouldn't work. Have you gotten the 4.2.1 update?
Additionally, light flow states in its description that it doesn't work on most lg phones.
On previous phones, when I got a notification, say a text message, the screen would light up and I could tell I had to check my phone. On my N4, when I get a text the phone only vibrates and the screen doesn't light up. Is there a way to have it light up? I tried looking through all the settings but couldn't find anything, and I find it rather odd LG would set their phone up like this.
Also- is there a way so that the pulse notification light goes off more frequently? right now I have to wait about 10 seconds for the next pulse light to go off, making the notification LED rather useless if i miss it the first time.
Thanks.

There's custom ROMs such as CarbonROM, Xylon, ParanoidAndroid, or XenonHD and so many others) that let you configure the colour, blink rate, and application-specificity of your LED indicator. You can also look at Liteflow to customize your LED notification if you'd rather not go to custom ROMs

This. But if you are rooted and having a custom ROM, they integrate it by default. But if it's really waking up the device you want, you might want to try an app called SMS WakeUp. (You can get it from the Play Store)
