BRICKED my first SGS3 !!! - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Well, that was interesting .. and for the first time, I actually bricked a phone and I wasn't even doing anything developmentally on it !!!
Lastnight when I got home from work, plugged my phone in, did my nightly stuff etc etc etc .. around 10:30pm, decided to play on the computer for a bit .. so, throught I would connect my SGS3 and transfer some music to my 64GB card.
Everything was going great, got about half way through transferring, the little USB plug on the SGS3 screen was plugging away confirming files were transferring .. then all of a sudden, the screen went totally white for about 2 seconds then black .. the transfer on the computer stopped stating it was unable to locate the removable device !!!
Unplugged the SGS3 from the computer, held down the power button .. nothing .. no little vibration you get when turning on your phone .. it was dead. Removed the battery, left it out for about 30 seconds, reinserted, again nothing .. removed the battery, this time waited a good 20 minutes .. nothing .. Even my JIG gets no response from the phone.
The phone wasn't hot, battery wasn't hot and fully charged, was just transferring MP3 files .. the only thing that happened differently yesterday was receiving the Security Update via OTA that was on my screen that same morning when I woke for work .. and that was successfully installed !!!
I just received the phone July 5th, so I'm still good for the 30 days .. contacted AT&T Tech lastnight, spoke to some wonderful woman from India that couldn't hardly speak english and obviously knew nothing about phones .. tried patching me through to Tech Support (and for some reason, Tech Support was getting slammed with calls !!) .. I was on the phone waiting for 1 hour and 45 minutes .. so here it is, going on 2:00am with Tech Support, went through the normal channels of testing/diagnosing .. nothing worked (like I hadn't already tried everything he had me do again, and again and again .. although I didn't mention trying the JIG .. LOL) .. so long story finishing, returning my bricked phone today to a Corporate AT&T location to obtain a replacement.

is that because of the 64gb card?

Ohh no, not at all .. phone is fully compatible for 64GB cards, as long as its FAT32.

Did you try going to the local at&t store and ask them to exchange the phone for you. I would definitely do that first if I bought it from at&t.

Throwing bricks since 2008.....and proud of it.

Well, I just returned back from the AT&T Store, sure enough, phone DEAD. So, received a replacement .. however, I am actually pissed off at AT&T at this time. Figured I had the Marble White version .. so I asked the rep at the store if I can exchange it for the Pebble Blue model .. said no problem .. well that was until he was checking me out and tried charging me an additional $35 restocking fee !!!!!! RESTOCKING FEE for a defective phone .. ARE YOU KIDDING ME.
Its bad enough they bumped our activation fees to double what it was ( $18 to $36 ) .. but to try and charge someone $35 as a restocking fee for a defective device, and because I asked for the Pebble Blue model .. if I go back to the Marble White model .. no charge !!! Guy said it had something to having to change the model number in the system, and that they have no authority to waive the $35 once they do the change .. what BULLSH*T is that !!!
Can anyone (AT&T Employee) confirm what I wrote above ??

[Q] Bricked or peice of poop right out of the box

Hello, Im stumped I just bought a brand new phone from ebay sealed in the box its a tmobile htc hd2. upon opening it from the box and turning it on the phone would get stuck at the stick together screen. never did fully boot once. then after about 10 min of waiting i pulled the battery and put it back in. Then the phone would only light up the keys and nothing else. once again took the battery out and put it back in. Now NOTHING, wont respond to any type of reset and wont do nothing. wont charge wont connect to pc did I just get a dud RIGHT out of the box? i did nothing to make this happen i didnt even get to the main screen urgh $450 later one month in shipping to receive what looks like a dud. Checked battery voltage its at 3.75 volts fully charged. wtf?
bump bump bump
That's not impossible.
Try to hardreset it, hold down both volume buttons and power on.
If it doesn't work, do you have the phone's warranty? Get it to HTC and they'll fix it / give you another one.
If not... try checking the eBay warranty that gives you the money back, don't know exactly how it works but i know there's something like this.
If all this doesn't help... then i'm sorry.
Not sure if you're in the United States, but at a T-Mobile store, a brand new HD2 will go for ~$450, and come with a one year warranty.
Hope all works out well.
Hey guys. No I live in Calgary Canada and I ordered this phone to work with our WIND mobile service provider. I tried everything... it wouldnt respond at all... funny though even though it didnt show any signs of life it was charging the batter PAST its rated 3.7 volts. At one point I read 4.2 volts at the battery while out of the phone which is strange to start with. Thinking it was the battery I hard wired the phone to a spliced USB cord to see if it would power up and still it did nothing. I then said this is ridiculous and called tmobile and htc. all I have to say is WOW. Tmobile is serious about customer service even for me not being a client of thiers. Same goes for HTC. both offered to repair or replace the phone as it was brand new and they could see from imei.t-mobile even offered to refund my money which i didnt even pay to them in the first place. Wish we had customer service like that up here in calgary where the city is run on oil money and oil hungry people.. not cool. Anyways I talked to my seller off ebay because I didnt want to wait and he agreed to send me a new one overnight express with fedex and i will get it saturday. I sent this one back already forget trying to fix a problem matic phone. Oh yeah this next one was tested before shipment BUT I did read there is alot of people with this problem and no one has an answer still...............
thanks anyway guys
The battery's supposed to go to 4.26V. And it's good that you're getting another.

Got a replacement refurb phone . Have some ????

I got a replacement phone since the power button on mine decided to sink like Atlantis into the body of the phone . I managed to unroot and set back to stock before sending it back . I kinda forgot to get the pri back to 1.77 since the new one is 1.77 eh whatver LOL . Main question I have is . I was told the phone was gonna be new . Well it is HW 004 but on the invoice said REC (going to assume reconditioned) . So transferred everything over to the phone and fired it up . Typed in the code and pulled up the info on the phones life itself . Heres where it gets interesting . Total life calls made 2 , Data sent and recieved 0 ? , Total time of life calls 1 min . Status reconditioned . It also goes on to say the phone was reconditioned in January of 2011 . With a activation date of 12/2010 . Essentially the phone has no scratches no blemishes nothing wrong with it . Im just curious as to why a refurb phone would have such low statistics . Was it a gift for Christmas that someone didnt want ? They just simply brought it back ? I have no real complaints about the phone just curious what others opinions might be . First time dealing with a phone replacement .
When it was reconditioned they prob reset the meters and made 2 test calls.
just a thought
but the original activation date would still be there, wouldn't it?
Interesting.
When I got my old Hero replaced with a refurb, the life counters were painfully high, even though I had just taken it out of the box..
In theory, December to January would be within someone's 30 day no-questions-asked return window, and supposedly, when they take a phone back it has to be marked reconditioned from that point on. So maybe whoever wanted another phone and returned it? It's possible I guess.
Yeah the original activation date was december of last year . I mean the phone is flawless not a scratch or a nick anywhere . I was just curious as to what others opinions might have been .
How were you able to get that info I am curious myself I also just got a replacement phone
the data life and call life do not get reset when a phone is reconditioned so consider yourself lucky. It was probably a phone that someone got and probably bricked it within 24 hours and took it back. You got yourself a pretty good refurb.

I had a droid x for less then 24 hours before I returned it. Could be some kind of same situation.
Perfectly normal for it to retain the "original" activation date after a recondition.
Great to hear this. I just got off the phone with Sprint who is sending me a replacement for my phone. My power button also sank and there is dirt under the screen. They said it would take a couple of weeks due to it being backordered and that it will most likely be a new device, not a refurb. The representative at the store prior to me calling (tried getting my screen replaced at the store with no luck) said that if I get a replacement it will mos likely be new due to low stocks. He said they set some devices aside from manufacturing for replacements as reconditioned. I believe this is what happened to you. I hope this happens to me too.
I asked the rep on the phone to see about getting me a White EVO (mine is black) and he said he would. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Odd I said the same thing . I had a white one and wasnt really opposed to getting a black one . He said the black ones were on backorder and people were still waiting . I said ok no prob I can still stick with the white one . I asked him if it was gonna be a new Evo and he said yes . Thats why when I got it and it had REC on it I was like WTF ! ? Its probably the same situation a previous poster said . They put these back as reconditioned units when they are infact new . They were probably initially activated then stamped reconditioned for some legal reason or something who knows .

[Q] Dead DZ and HTC Repair in the UK

This afternoon my DZ decided to die. I checked the phone and then 10 minutes later went to ring my wife and... nothing, phone wouldn't respond to the power button. I whipped out the battery and left it out for 2 minutes but still nothing.
I have since tried plugging in the charger and again nothing, not even the orange charging light. Tried leaving the battery out for 1/2 hour and removing the memory and sim cards and even plugging in the charger with the cards and battery removed, but still nothing.
looks like it's serious.
I have had the phone 11 months, I got it from a little shop (well booth really) that was branded as HTC in the local Westfield shopping centre. The little shop has now disappeared. The phone is sim unlocked and not tied to a carrier. When I dug out the receipt it is in the name of a company called Westcoast Mobile. They have a website (www.westcoast.co.uk) but they seem to be a rather diverse company but not one that sells phones to the public.
Consequently I was planning on calling HTC on Monday to see if I can get the phone sent off for repair. Does anyone know if I'm likely to have problems with HTC or will they be happy to help me?
In the mean time I have dug out my trusty HTC Typhoon which is currently synching my email and charging up. Old phone but it does the job and I love the size and shape of it.
HTC warranty is one yr. Should be ok. I bought mine used so I always fixed mine myself. But you bought yours new.

My suggestion is this:
Try buying a new battery , maybe it will fix the problem
Also if the phone will be recovered , take care of this with buying a new silicon case or something like this. Today my DZ cashed by up to 2M and nothing problem , sceen perfect i got luck.
Also i add if you realy love the phone , and the repair cost is to much , buy one used on ebay like me. I have bought one for 220€ @ 170£ , with 23months of guaranty and it's perfect.
Good luck mate

I'm wondering whether they had some sort of tie in with HTC as the booth was completely branded as HTC anad they were selling sim free phones on any network.
I got a phone from them because:
1. They had the DZ and I could have for free by renewing my contract with O2.
2. The sales bloke could string a sentence together unlike the fool in the O2 shop.

I'm a Brit too and I had a pretty similar issue just a few months back. The bizarre part is I wasn't even doing anything "risky".
Get in touch with HTC ASAP. They were really good to me.
I contacted them via their website (you'll need the serial number/IMEI). Very polite and helpful responses and offered courier pickup for mainland UK addresses.
Didn't take long at all for a repair, and I believe it was back with me in 2-3 days.
I can't speak for their phone support, other than that they called me to check if the phone was still working okay and asked if they could close the ticket. An unexpected touch, but appreciated.
Motorola barely lifted a finger for me when dealing with my MS2 issues... but that is another story.
Since you have the receipt, you should be fine. Again, just get in touch!
I warn you, it will most likely come back with gingerbread like mine did, but you can still downgrade and root (if you so choose) using the guides on here.

Thanks for that, it gives me a bit more confidence. It's just annoying the phone was in my pocket in a sleeve for 15 minutes and it just died.
Well I rang them on Monday morning, at first they wanted to send me a new battery but I pointed out it didn't do anything without the battery when you plugged the charger in. The bloke had to check with his supervisor then came back and said "let's arrange to pick the phone up". I had to email them a copy of the receipt from when I bought the phone and that was that.
They emailed me a form and a label, I boxed up the phone and a courier picked it up Tuesday afternoon. Pretty straightforward really.
Just waiting to hear that they have the phone now.
Got the phone back this morning, so exactly 7 days from calling HTC to having a working phone again. I think that is pretty good service.
Seems like the problem was pretty terminal as the phone has returned with a new IMEI and according to the paperwork with the phone it has had the "PCBA" and "flash board" replaced.
The phone even came in a little box with "I'm back" printed on it.
Sounds great ! Was that all free, under warranty ?

All free, didn't cost me a penny.
The bloke I spoke to at HTC told me I had a two year warranty after he had spoken with his supervisor.
Is that two years from the purchese date or the repair date (as in did they extend the warrenty for you)
It will be 2 years from the purchase date. The paperwork with the phone when it comes back says something along the lines of you don't get any extra warranty after the repair date.

4th replacement for an atrix, AT&T can't get it right

My gf and I both have atrix phones and I'm on my 2nd one. it's been fine so far, it runs ICS etc etc
well, she is on her 3rd one and this one is having problems already
1st one the digitizer stopped working
2nd one speaker wasn't working
3rd one the notification bar keeps disappearing. factory reset does not fix it
I don't want to root her phone or anything so she wants to keep it stock (and she should)
We talked to motorola and they told us to factory reset. told them we did, and they pretty much said do it again... wtf #1
after I told her to call AT&T and they told her the same thing. We told them it was already factory reset once about an hour ago, and they said to take it back to the service center and get a 4th one.... problem is, she can't this week because this was her only day off. (I guess they forget we can't keep going back to the service center because we work) they also suggested when we get the 4th one to play around with it for about an hour at the place so we know it works.... seriously?
3 phones and 2 of them broke within a week (the notification bar happens about 10 mins after starting the phone)
does anyone have any suggestions on this problem we're having? We can go back and get a 4th one, but jeez... 4 phones? I think it's time they give her something else
Thanks for the suggestions everyone
Hmm... it seems like you just have bad luck.
What you could try to do is ask AT&T to give you both new Atrix 2's free of charge.
You can explain how it's not your fault that all of this is happening and that they should value that you are their customer.
It's worth a shot and I think you have a good chance at convincing them to do this. You'll probably need to sign a new 2-year contract though.
I would tell AT&T you are tired of Motorola and the problems with the phones and aske for a Skyrocket to replace them with. Worth a shot if you want to upgrade and get away from Motorola.
Mine was sent once cos digitizer stopped working, then month later I had random reboots even on stock. They send me new one and its fine. I dont mind as long as they offer replacement.

My first Atrix never worked out of the box. Sent in for repair, didn't work. Sent in again, worked for a week, something else broke.
Got a NEW replacement from Motorola after much *****ing and escalating to BBB & executive customer service and have not had any problems yet, except it came with a non-working factory battery that was replaced after two months of being ignored.
I'm hesitant to buy another Motorola because their support team makes it a nightmare to get your phone fixed or replaced.

yep. had 4 Atrix already... the more att replaced my phone, the worse it got.
New atrix -> bluetooth audio stream keeps disconnecting --> Moto said, go get it replaced because it should not do that...
1st replacement -> refurbished... same problem... called Moto again and att service center --> go get it replaced.
2nd replacement -> refurbished... same bluetooth problem, with additional random reboot. i check phone to look at time, press power button -> reboots.... a lot... --> replacement time... but wait... "we cannot replicate the problem" says att service center representative, "thus we cannot replace it"...
me: it is "RANDOM"... they played with it for 5 mins and could not replicate the problem..
att service center representative told me to call att replacement center who said "why wouldn't they replace it? all we're going to do is the same thing they would, which is replace the phone".. att service center: "our policy is, if we cannot replicate problem, we do not replace"
with much frustration, finally got a hold of someone higher up who was willing to replace phone...
3rd replacement coming from so called higher up -> refurbished... status bar disappears... cannot answer calls, bluetooth problems, wrong battery gauge... out of att options... last option, send it in for repairs at Moto... will be getting phone back tomorrow.. will see how phone works... crossed fingers, it would work as it should...
Yeah, the motorola phones boast a lot of features, but even with the motorola razor in the past, I remember disliking it due to unreasonable security restrictions and random bgs.
i have been with att for many years and dealt with alot of **** and like our friend the att rep said its a refurbished device so it had problems before so its bound to again, see i got the atrix with the 99 cent deal and after one with one problem i called moto and att and i got a new atrix to replace my old one, which had a chip in the fingerprint reader and no rubber around the camera lens, call and beg plead and lie it works every time lol take it from someone who has been through 20 phones in 4 years if its the phone they provided you with they will replace it, alos only 3 or 4 out of that 20 i actually broke the rest were refurbs and refurbs of a different make and model, good luck OP you should get it right eventually
It isn't just Motorola. I have had the same problems with HTC, Sony, and Nokia. My son had 4 iphones replaced. It is a refurb problem. Just keep complaining and eventually you might get one that lasts.
i have just received back my phone from motorola... and guess what... FAIL! my phone has not be repaired! they did not input the problem i told them about so all they did was flash the software.
I'd been on the phone with them for a good 3-4 hrs to get my phone replaced/repaired. In order for motorola to "replace" the phone, they need to verify with ATT that the phone had been replaced at least 3 times. They need the Serial no. or IMEI no. of the phones that had been replaced, and they cannot guarantee that I will receive a new phone. problem is, I do not keep the serial numbers/IMEI numbers of the phone I get, so I advice you guys to write it down or something just in case stupid things like this happen
I replaced my atrix 4 times because of a ****ing nice issue. People hear me like im in a tunnel .... garbled and far away. I still don't have it right but I kept it since it fell in water. It works perfectly because I pulled battery immediately but I can't return it because the white dot is now red.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
same here. my digitizer went bad, refurb had messed up contacts for sdcard and wouldn't see it. Next refurb the screen was not aligned good, could see light bleed around the edges. I fixed the contacts on the second one and sent the last one back. Oh yea the phone also had the drop bluetooth problem, but that seems to have been fixed after flashing.
About puked when i first turned on the phone on and saw all that att bloat crap on there.

I received an defected s7 edge

Hey everyone, I just got my new s7 edge yesterday and I put it to charge last night and I woke up without any charge. I plugged it in into several different outlets and chargers. But nope, nothing could've saved it. I went to my local t-mobile store to see if i can exchange it for another phone but they said no that I have to send it in.. They told me that I could cancel the jump on demand and just finance the phone and pay 100 dollars down. Said no thank you. Now I have to wait another 7-10 business days just to receive my phone. I called customer care and they said they will try to help me out. On the bright side at least I still have my Note 5 :good: I am currently waiting for a call from customer care to see if they can do anything to expedite my process.
No need to make a thread about it and there's nothing customer care can do you have to warranty exchange and the device is back ordered

I just wanted to provide some insight just in case anyone is facing the same thing as me. And also to see if I am the only one that received a defected S7 edge.
That's odd because I am on the Jump On Demand program as well and the manager of the store I go to said if anything is wrong with it within the first 14 days to just bring it back to the store and they will exchange it out.

When I have my Note 5 with JOD on 1st day when device release, the screen get dark in some spot on screen after 1 day of use, I went back there and they replaced for me to another Note 5 without any hold or problem , because still under 14 days , everything will be with T Mobile store if you get in store purchased , only send it back if order online.
If you get it by in-store , you can go to another store to replaced without sending device back and waitting ...

Online or in-store is the same 14 days . The thing different between where you get them ....
Pre-order in store mean the store help you order it to ship it to you , it mean device come to you by shipping ( online order ) , I think that's why they can't replaced in-store ...
Order in store , you got device by them directly , no shipping or anything , defected happen just give it back and get new one in 1 2 3
