Hello XDA community, this is my first post here, I hope you can help me .
I've spend time reading the forums looking for the method to flash a custom rom in the Defy+, but before that I want to try the different ROMs alongside the stock rom using mutiboot since I'm new in the custom roms world, and don't want to do anything reckless.
I have already installed the latest version of 2ndInit (2.3) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212, now I should install multiboot from CWM but I have a doubt here, if I understand properly, multiboot need the existence of the boot entries 'Stable Recovery’ and ‘Latest Recovery’ but in the last version of 2ndinit, bootmenu has only "Custom Recovery" and "Stock Recovery", is it really important? I mean I can go to "Custom Recovery" which load CWM and install multiboot from there but for what I have read both entries are needed to manage the "real" system and the "virtual" system, so in my case it could only manage the virtual one? maybe I should update bootmenu? (according to the 2ndinit changelog it has the latest version from the CM sources but that was in April)
And my other question is, when I'm ready to install the custom ROM as my primary one, should I uninstall multiboot first? if so, how? maybe resintalling 2ndinit?
Thank you for your help
You dont have to deinstall it. Just erase the folder in /sdcard/multiboot of your virtual. And if you installed multiboot and flash a new rom on nandroid you have to install multiboot new, just telling cause the first time you will be scared about that.
You have installed 2ndinit... great, now install latest bootmenu to get three recovery options, I.e. latest/custom, stable and stock recovery.
Remember to install virtual rom via latest recovery.

OK, I thought that the latest version of 2ndinit had the latest version of bootmenu..
EDIT: what's the latest version of bootmenu? 2dinit has bootmenu 1.1.8 according with its changelog.

I asked because perhpas I would need "plain" CWM to install CM9 (or other ROM) but I guess CM would overwrite everything when I install it (since bootmenu is in the nand memory and not in the recovery partition) thank you.

You can use Multiboot manager to install new virtual partitions.

Ok then but I want to be completely sure: is it totally safe to do a downgrade of bootmenuin in this case (with 2ndinit 2.3 installed)?
Sorry for keep bothering you, thank you!

Yes its totally safe.
Ok, I managed to install the latest quarx build in doble boot . Now I'll try the epsylon build since the quarx's has two annoying, one with the battery measurement (it shows less charge percentage than it actually is, for example when it is up to 4000 mV (actual 100%) it shows it is only 75% charged); and I can't send sms, but I'll look at this problems later.
By the way, the bootmenu downgrade was not necessary since it doesn't use "Latest Recovery" anymore (I was following an old tutorial) now you choose to enter in the virtual system recovery in "2nd-system" (inside the "boot" menu).
Thank you for your help, rishi2100

Hello. After updating my A500 to the official ICS rom, I easily rooted my tablet succesfully by downloading a program found on this website:
http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=350
Then, I downloaded an app from the market/play store called "Acer Recovery" wich lets you flash CWM recovery (which is built in into the app). The app said it flashed the recovery succesfully. Now, when I press the "boot into recovery" button I get stuck in the Acer logo and on the top left corner it sais in red: Recovery Failed
I would like to flash custom roms. What am I doing wrong?
Many thanks...

Which version of Bootloader are you running? The recovery installer app should tell you when you start it.
Also, which version of Recovery did you try to install?

Thanks for helping me out.
-Bootloader Version: 0.03.12-ICS
I tried installing the two only recoveries avaliable wich are:
-ClockworkMod Recovery rev1.3.4 by thor2002ro
-Stock USA 1.141.07_COM_GEN1 recovery
After flashing any of the two I click on "Reboot into recovery", it reboots but gets stuck in Acer logo and on the top left corner says:
-Recovery verified failed
I have the same problem too and I still couldn't find a way out
Firmware Specs are same as yours
I wonder if there is a simple way out
Anyone can help ?
Thanks
Ramp
Ok, both of you need to go to this thread and read over the info.
The reason why your recovery "might have failed" is probably because you didn't delete a certain file from your rom before you flashed your CWM. That is... "recovery.from.boot.p" in the system folder.
If you don't, every time you reboot your will lose your CWM.
Anyhow, read this thread. Everything you need is there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
And if you;re going to install some ICS Customs in the future, I advise you install a patched unlocked bootloader.
EDIT: One more important thing. Before you folks go off flashing and everything, PLEASE... Get your UID number now, and write it down in a safe place (like the box your tablet came in . If you tab gets borked up, it's the only thing that'll save it.
MD
As MD stated be sure to read that thread , once down reading it, re-read it , I would try using that method first ,it helps you learn , but if you want to go to this thread and it will be a whole lot easier :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675939

Thanks, I did it as well with AfterOta, what a great tool. I am already rooted in ICS and have public recovery working. I'd like to try some custom roms. Is there any other step I have to complete before flashing a new custom rom?
Thanks again for the help

I would advise making sure you have at least Version 3 or higher of the unlocked bootloader. Version 4 is better as you can change the boot image. Also, with version 4 (and higher) you can flash any future bootloaders through CWM.
Also, make a system (nand) recovery backup before you go flashing roms. This way you have something to go back to if the flash doesn't go right.
part of the original problem you had was the recovery you tried to flash was an earlier version which doesnt match ICS , You can get the beta copy of Acer Recovery ,but you'll have to search for it , it also has updated ICS recovery listed

THIS IS FROM EAZYTERRYS
The real answer is if you have ICS, to install a custom recover or custom kernel you must have an unlocked bootloader.
The following resources are related to the new bootloader, a quick read of the OPs of the first two are highly recommended, even if you install with the third link. (This is to have a highlevel idea of what you are changing on your device, as it will help you find what you need to look closer at in future if something goes wrong, or possibly prevent a problem in the first case) bootloader thread civato's guide Afterota tool (windows users bootloader install tool)
If you already have the unlocked bootloader installed, but can't boot into recovery:
This is likely because you have a stock ICS rom overwritting recovery with the stock recovery in every boot; either use fastboot or (if you have root) a program such as acer recovery installer to force the install of a recovery and immediately reboot into it. (Most bootloader installers will also install a recovery that you can immediately boot into)
Once in recovery you can backup/restore/or install a rom modified to prevent the overwrite of recovery. (More advanced users can stop this from adb by removing some files)
Personally I use a lightly modified version of the stock rom you are using now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1661492
it ought to be safe to do a no wipe update to that and receive a more expected environment with a custom recovery, optional custom OC kernel, and busybox support.
However if you explore the dev section, many other (both more and less modified) versions of ICS roms exist. Themed and otherwise. So feel free to explore.

and it doesn't go ,with 3.2.1 it goes what can be the problem?
Hi.
A number of times I have seen instructions where one is supposed to first flash a rom (NativeSD in my case), and then to flash a correction. Should the correction be flashed in the same way as the original rom, or should it be done differently? When is "recovery mode" used?
I also saw a case where one was supposed to change a rom by flashing a correction before installing this rom (an Xperia modificarion of Tytung's Nexus ICS rom). How is this done?
All instructions should be clear in the OP. If a .zip is provided and you know that you're supposed to flash that after flashing a ROM, then select install .zip from SD card in CWM and flash it.

No, just use whatever recovery you have installed. I have a habit of saying CWM since that's the only recovery I've ever used.

Thanks. In other words, the short answer to my first question is simply "yes". And the word "recovery" is used to refer to the various programs that can be used to flash the roms and also flash patches.
I now understand better what is going on, after looking at the contents of some of the patches that I was interested in. In the old unix days I would have made these changes by simply editing the appropriate text files directly. But I guess that is a no-no today. And I have not been able to figure out how to run Emacs in su mode on my phone.

Exactly. Good luck
I would like to install the kitkats under development. Can they be installed over a stock rom? I've installed the latest 2ndInit that I could find (it displays its version as v1.1.8), which installed cyanogen recovery v5.0.3.1. The instructions say you have to update the recovery, but the update_recovery.zip file doesn't apply.
Can I put the kitcat over a stock rom? Do I need a more recent 2ndInit and/or recovery? If so, where do i find them?
(Yes, this is a spare phone, and I am doing this for testing purposes.)

Thanks, that's working. What I had wrong is trying to flash update_recovery.zip, which looks like it is to update previous CMs. I was able to flash that .zip from the 2ndInit's custom recovery, and use that to flash CM11 Now I have CM11 on it - thanks for your help. Next to choose a gapps package. It was actually the name 'TWRP' that I was missing.
For other's convienience, you can get TWRP Manager from the market, but there doesn't seem to be an official download of the apk, if you don't want to bother setting up a google account to get it.
Hi. I have been recenty using CM10 on my Defy and I wanted to change it. As I installed my CM with 2ndinit recovery it automatically changed to TeamWinRecoveryProject. So lately I was trying to flash this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515036
But as you can see, there is this line:
For CM10,10.1,10.2 < 07.11.13 users:
To install KitKat, need update recovery. Do not forget reboot, after install recovery.

I don't actually know, how to install new recovery I tried to flash it with TWRP, but after reboot I wasn't able to open it at all I tried to use ROM manager and other apps like this, but nothing worked. And I don't know why, but after a couple of reboots, my system crashed somehow: as the CM logo showed up while booting it just didn't move farther and kept like that. So I used RSD Lite and flashed SBF file just as it was described in this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828639
OK, so now I want to install new recovery and ROM. Can anyone tell me, how to install recovery which is needed for QUARX's CM11?
And also: I don't know much about this, because I'm a newbie, but I heard that it's recommandable to change Kernel too. I heard that it would speed up my phone etc. Is it true? How can I do it? Which Kernel should I use? I didn't change anything while rooting my phone and/or installing CM10.
Just because you're a newbie, it doesn't mean you can't read through before asking questions. Read this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568325. No kernel change required.
