[Fix]R800a Users Who Can't Flash Roms, come here. - Xperia Play General

To install roms on an r800a install an r800i ftf otherwise you will get boot loops. Many r800a users have this problem and post on threads about it, hopefully this can be stickied to reduce the amount of those posts/threads.
I also recommend this but if you are flashing to ICS or JB, flash 64 baseband first from the above ftf by excluding everything except baseband.
This is done because 67 baseband results in no signal on ICS/JB roms.
Note: When flashing a new baseband, do not wipe data or cache...unless you want to.

I would suggest offering a link to the r800i FTF file in your main post too. Searching the forums can be done but if you want to draw attention to your thread, make it as simple as possible.

Okay, I added links to ftfs. Thanks for the suggestion

thanks
thanks for the tft file.

I think this is the right thread to ask this question. My brother in law has one of the newer plays from Alltel. It is of course CDMA n locked bootloader. I have scoured the forums n google for best way to unlock the bootloader on his phone, so I can flash Roms on it. The only site/info I find is this guys paid site where he remotes in and helps u unlock the bootloader. I figured I could do this myself, as I am pretty good at doing funky stuff to unlock/mod phones. But my attempts failed. It involved using a paperclip n running some programmer app to flash custom bootloader on it. So my question is; is it possible at all to unlock his bootloader on his Play from Alltel and be able to flash any roms at all on it? So far, all I have done is obtained root on it.. is this all that can be done with his phone? He complains constantly about it running out of space and memory, cause he plays so many damn games on it. I told him, if it were possible to flash a custom ROM on it however, it would possibly help it with those problems he hated about the phone.. can anyone chime in and direct me to right forum/site? He said he will be willing to pay for that guys services but if there is a way for me to do it, id like to try.. thanks for any info anyone can provide. Btw he bought this phone earlier this year. So it is a newer model of the Plays CDMA..

Try getting it unlocked from Alejandrissimo. He's unlocked many play's on this forum and he charges $25 USD. I'm pretty sure that works with CDMA too. The link doesn't seem to be working but check out Xperia Unlock Service on Facebook or something. And rooting alone should allow him to delete some system apps to save space. Tell him to move stuff to SD too if possible. For the memory thing, I would just use a task manager (Gingerbread only) and maybe supercharge once he roots. DO NOT TRY TO UNLOCK IT YOURSELF. Unless the model # is r800i in that case, you can unlock yourself from the sony website.

help me a lot

Mine was from vodafone and wasnt sim locked either. Ok you have two choices for root. You can either unlock your bootloader (there are many downsides and advantages to this so you should research it) or downgrade to 2.3.2, root using gingerbreak then OTA update to latest version. That way you will not loose root while updating.

What OTA Update Means? And please can you give some links on how to downgrade and root it please?
And btw if i use the method of downgrading my phone first will i be able to flash custom ROMs?

Im on my phone so i can't really link. Look in the android development section, there is a thread all about rooting 2.3.3 with a locked bootloader. OTA means over the air. Basically thats when you download and install an update using just your phone.

No you need an unlocked bootloader to flash custom roms. But please read the pros and cons of unlocking your bootloader first. And understand what you can and can't do
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Ok mate just wanna say thanks a lot for your help and i really appreciate it. You really helped me out here. also just one more thing i need to know. By the looks of it the only cons in unlocking your bootloader seems to be that you will lose warranty and that your phone or your radio may get bricked which apparently can be fixed with restoring a backed up data using a program named omnius for se which i'm actually working on... however my only other concern is if there are any other disadvantages regarding the unblocking the bootloader that you happned to know of and be kind to share it with me Also just wanna say that i can see many tutorials as you said in the development section and i quite frankly i don't know which one applies to me since i realized one of the tutorials are for models with build number .184 where as mine is 3.0.1.a.0.145 AND I HAVE NO CLUE WHICH TUTORIAL TO FOLLOW. So i would be greatfull if you could lend me link to a right tutorial whenever you get free time on the PC
If all you want is root you can do that with a locked bootloader. You will have to downgrade to 2.3.2 (.184) then root then ota to get the latest firmware rooted. Follow the guide here. Or see this post i made here for easier instuctions on downgrading and rooting.
If you want to flash custom roms then you do need an unlocked bootloader like AndroHero has said. You dont need a specific guide to unlock your bootloader. Just go too the SE bootloader unlocking site (it gives you all the instructions you need) http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/. Then just flash doomlords kernel (which autoroots) or anything really from the development section (since i think anything can be rooted with one click with an unlocked bootloader) you will then have root and the ability to flash cutom roms.
Oh btw build number .184 = 2.3.2, build number 3.0.1.a.0.145 = 2.3.3 and build number 4.0.a = 2.3.3 (xloud version, the latest update)
+
If you unlock your bootloader OTA, Pc Companion + SEUS are off limits use any of them after unlocking your bootloader and you will brick your phone. Go to the dev section for the latest updates.

Bootloader unlock page under maintenance

I was planning to unlock my bootloader today. When I tried to open the Sony ericsson page, its showing the page is under maintenance. Are you guys getting the same response from the sever? Or did Sony completely stop the bootloader unlocking?

Same question here. I tried it since yesterday and that feature is under maintenance till now. I am planning to unlock R800i. Did Sony Ericsson stop the bootloader unlocking and if so, any alternative to unlock bootloader may I know? Thanks in advance.
Well, we will see. Hopefully its just a real maintenance, but maybe they are fixing the hole which the guys used to unlock cdma phones.
Let's hope it comes back to life soon!

I guess they're fixing CDMA keys hole. Looks like Verizon isn't happy about it.
But I don't understand why it takes so long to modify some small piece of code to disable MEID calculator.
Maybe you DDOSed them too much ?

succeeded, but with a little problem. Could any1 pls help me?
i followed Bin4ry's guide [How-to] Root your Play.
On the first try of flashing system with play_modded, i got some error message like android.process.acore & android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly, so I soft reset it to factory setting and flash system again and succeeded, with no error message.
But the problem is after the root process, my phone can't detect 3G network. The service provider I am using has two options, 2G and 3G, and phone can only detect 2G network.
Another problem is that although I can find WiFi networks and connect, WiFi connection is not working anymore (no data send/receive through WiFi).
If any of you know how to fix that 3G network & WiFi missing issues, kindly let me know. Thanks in advance.
One more, my rooted play is now on 3.0.A.2.184 build and when I connect it to computer, PC Companion said found new software update and ask me whether want to update or not. Rooting process will be overwritten and I will need to root it again if I update software (base 3.1.A....something I think) I would like to know.
Thank you again.

For starters unlock ur bootloader again, as you need it to flash the kernel (which in my opinion is worth keeping), then go over to the developers sub forum, download the UK generic 4.0.whatever the rest of the code is firmware, flash it with flashtool, the go to doomlords thread and download his kernel. All instructions you need are in the relevant threads, easy to follow. I would link them, but I'm away from my computer at the moment. And I cant link from my phone. Sorry. Hope all goes well!

Hello there my friend just purchased a Rogers branded xperia play how would i go about rooting it and unlocking the bootloader? i highly doubt its as simple as fastboot oem unlock but am confused at the current state of affairs.
Hello there friend, do you know if the phone is carrier unlocked or is it locked? if the phone is unlocked it will be so much easier to root. if your phone is locked you will need to ask Alejandrissimo or Blagus to unlock it (this will cost 17 euros there abouts, the software they use to unlock your phone requires SERVER CREDITS which they have to pay for... by doing this your phone will become fully unlocked which means you can then go onto the netstage of rooting the device), there is no way i can help unlock the phone but soon as that is done the rooting is very simple and straight forward. if you are unsure if the phone is unlocked/locked try putting another sim card into the phone (has to be different network)
please check out this link if you would like to seek more infomation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043630

Hey dude, thanks for the offer ive been googling for the past few days and am still unsure about where to start. Do you mind if I ask a few q's?
1. I have a carrier unlocked r800i, but not bootloader unlocked. Its on 2.3.3 and I want to root but prefer to keep BL locked, is it possible?
2. If root will I still be able to get OTA updates?
3. Apart from titanium backup what is some fun stuff to do after rooting?
Thanks in advance man ;-)

You can always reLock the Bootloader after you rooted there is also a method that works on all cept R8OOX to get R00T without Unlocking the BOOTloader
If Bootloader is Relocked, you will be able to get OTA updates, dont do it by PCCompanion.if bootloader is UNblocked then you will get a BRICKed phone, but can be recovered i think.
Alot of great AppS for RooT,DroidSheep is mean but total fun (See what people are doing connected to the same network ) app2SD PLUS , setcpu for OverClocking on DooMkernel,LCDensity and Adfree are ontop of my head.Wireless TEHTER and RooTExplorer are great, with RC being a MUST!
I personally feel the Xperia Play threads here at XDA is very fragmented.
This place would be a whole lot better if there was a global thread posted, that was specifically dedicated to all things rooting.
This would ideally include -
1) A conclusive guide how to root every type of model
2) Bloatware that is safe to remove
3) Completed ROMS / partially completed ROMS safe to install
4) How to overclock
5) Xperia Play specfic rooted mods that are best to install
6) How to update firmware / software once rooted, and how not to brick your phone
I am perfectly capabel of rooting myself, i did it at 2.3.2, but now i refrain from rooting because there is no global guide how to do it and keep 2.3.3.
Yes there are guides, but like i say, they are fragmented and are not noob friendly.
Make a noob friendly guide and there will be a lot more interest in these forums.

E: this will update you to the newest firmware 4.0.A.2.368 - 2.3.3.
i have a newbie question..
I managed to root my xPlay but most of the people say to not update from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 from WIFI if you are unlocked.
What is the meaning of unlocked? It means bootloader?
Yes unlock most likely refers to bootloader. If it's referring to sim, people normally put the word sim in front
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
If you want to do the update on your phone, lock the bootloader
I used the XDA App to post this, what did you use?
Thanks for the advice guys! Im thinking its probably less hassle just to unlock the bootloader, seems that people have probs doing OTA updates with frozen and deleted stock apps, but i'll let u guys know how it goes anyway

Hi
I am a first time Android user, Picked up an Xperia Play on Monday gingerbread 2.3.3 , Build version 4.0.A.2.368 . Ive read through numerous threads here regarding Rooting and unlocking the boot loader, I'm falling at the first hurdle. For some reason when I try to put the handset into fastboot mode (holding search key while I plug in the usb cable) it just refuses to work. it just charges the handset and I get the green light on the power button rather than the blue one
Is this a know issue ?(haven't come across a solid explanation yet) and if it is , is there a fix?
I have tried another method of flashing the firmware using Windows 7 64bit and 32bit with the same results, system does not recognise the drivers.
So any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
If your bootloader isn't unlocked then ya you won't get a blue led it needs to be unlocked first

Actually Ive just gone back to look at the unlocking bootloader guide, and this is where Im having the issue.
5. Extract fastboot.rar and open fastboot folder
6. Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
7. Select 'Open command window here'
8. Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold search button and plug in USB Cable)
Part 8 there...This is has to be done If I want to be able to unlock the bootloader....Am i missing something ?

This post is pretty much hitting the nail on the head.
Since there are so many different models of this phone and differences with regard to carriers it quickly gets confusing to find the right tutorial
Looks like my handset is network locked, I have requested the unlock code from my service provider, so Ill give it another go when I get it unlocked.
does anyone know if the US At&t version comes unlocked?
I am picking one up tomorrow and wouldn't mind getting a heads up on this
My unlocking the bootloader saga continues, I received the network unlocking code from my service provider this morning, now when I try to enter fastboot more I get an orange light instead of the green light I was getting before.
Any suggestions would be faboo

The forum software often has a restriction not to allow only caps in the title, you need to have at least one lower-case character.
I have the wifi version also but my device unlocked and rooted, if i flash it from recovery will it wipe everything ??
thanx
You can't flash a FTF from recovery.
Only with Flashtool.
You can set in Flashtool which wipes you want or not.
Root and recovery will be gone, and to regain them we have to wait for Doomlord releasing a new custom kernel suited for .402 firmware.

Hasenbein1966: I guess this forum is meant for helping each other, right ?
If we just throw in some technical terms which won't mean much to others, we should not wonder if the same "others" brick their devices - and then need to ask for far more help.
Providing a single link costs us 10 seconds and makes asker and follow-up readers quite happy and safe.
Keeping "secrets" for ourselves might lead others into great trouble, causing real problems and far more effort to the "experts" - now dealing with an issue with no simple 10-seconds-solution anymore.
"Spoonfeeding" a human baby is a vital step for it learning how to eat without any further help. It's a principle working very well for millenniums, a first step to being able to help yourself. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Hi chef, i saw this flashtool too but it says i have to be unlocked. I also saw a flashtool from here and it doesn't say i have to be unlocked. I wanted to stay locked but flashing a newer firmware(different software customization). Is that possible

I just don't know. - I didn't root my Z2s till now because I a) don't want to lose the X-Reality video enhancement, and b) still got no Z2 without any manufacturing defects/touchscreen issues (even after upgrading to .402). :/

Why not try it and report back. If it succeed without unlocking, then great, if not, you don't loose anything. I used the one you linked too successfully on Mac, but mine is unlocked.
If you flash a FTF with the xda flashtool, you don't need to be unlocked. This is the flashtool which is always meant in discussions here, not the Sony one with the same name.

Thanks for your help! Successfully flash and booted up fine without any problems:victory:

got an xperia z from coworker, loving it are the newer versions better?

For some reason this c6606 phone gets 4 bars better reception than any phone I have. It's a little beat up so I'm thinking about getting the newer versions (are they better?) How easy is it to install ROMs. I've rooted it and the only thing I don't like is the tmobile built in tether program keeps telling me I need to get the upgrade to get hotspot working.

It will depend on you. The Z is a bit older and newer versions have a bit better spec's, but for Z is a bit longer development going on and I've heard there where some issues with newer versions (don't know, may or may not)
In the end it's all up to u, but I would say; if u love this phone by now, why don't enjoy it as the phone is not so valuable anymore and getting a new z2 or z3 will cost a fortune and will probably give almost the same satisfaction as u have right now (assuming this is ur first Z?)
BTW, if u are rooted, did u backup ur TA partition? If not, do so! Before anything else! This is important cuz u will lose them when unlocking bootloader.
Use search or check the top of these forums (android dev, original android dev, general, etc)
If u got ur boot loader unlocked, u can flash custom ROMs and even multiple ROMs if u want thanks to multirom
About the annoying hotspot thing, u can find out what app is causing that in system/app/ or system/priv-app/ and delete that app or simply rename it (hotspot.Apk > hotspot.Apk.bak) if you're not sure and don't wanna screw things up. Install a custom recovery and backup before doing anything.
Quite a lot of text ghehe. Anyway, if u wanna know something, search for it cuz almost anything is discussed. If u still unsure, ask
Thanks langeveld024, that is a lot of useful info. I'm glad I asked as it's not likely I would have backed up the TA partition.
The big thing he missed was that it is a C6606. Thats a T-Mobile variant. The bootloader is not unlockable. You have to stick with stock based roms for now.
Mine is also a C6606. Root it, back up your data and install a recovery manager. I suggest Rajeev's Ultimate XZ 4.4.4 ROM. Just flash it and you are good to go!

Hmm I do not know about carrier locked, but I've heard that if u have carrier lock you first have to sim-unlock it.
After that u should see "rooting status: bootloader unlock allowed: yes" when u type *#*#7378423#*#* (*#*#SERVICE#*#*) in dialer and go to "service info" > "configuration".
If bootloader unlocked, that's the place where u read: " rooting status: bootloader unlocked: yes"
So what does ur phone show there if u do this:?
*#*#7378423#*#*
Service info
Configuration
I guess it will show "unlock allowed: no"?
sim-unlock it and check again, I'm curious.
Sim is unlockable. It is fairly well documented that the c6606 does not have an unlockable bootloader. No custom kernels for us tmobile Z users.
