Hi Guys,
I just bought a barely used Dell XCD35 (Gen 2 with 512 MB RAM ). This is my first Android phone and am VERY EXCITED . The phone is currently rooted and when I turn it on I can see the CM9 logo, and it is currently on ICS 4.04 (ColdFusionX). This was all done by the person I bought it from who also told me he's installed Clockworkmod and has provided me with the stock rom backup.
Now, I am very VERY new to Android and am still searching the forums and reading a lot and getting to know the general terms, words, etc., and had a few questions to ask you guys.
Well, my PC is connected to the internet via a USB modem and I don't have wifi, hence I cannot connect my phone to the internet to get the basic apps to get me started. This is why I'll be taking my phone to my friends house who has wifi and get all the apps installed on my phone. Now after searching this forum for the most basic must have apps, I have made a list and would really appreciate if you guys can have a look at it and suggest me whether they are good or suggest me a better app or if they are not at all required
Alright, so here goes....
Astro File Manager (to manage files and install apks)
PowerAMP Music Player (I guess this is better than "Apollo")
App 2 SD Pro (install apps to SD card I guess to save phone memory)
RAM Manager (I read the thread and it seems quite good - Do I need this ?)
Screenshot ER - OR - Screenshot It (please recommend one)
SetCPU for Root Users
Autostarts
CacheMate for Root Users (is this needed?)
VPlayer (plays .mkv so I think it's good)
Documents To Go 3.0 Main App (view text files, MS doc, excel, etc ?)
SwiftKey 3
Google Maps
The reason I ask is because I don't know whether I need these or something better is already in ICS 4.04. Another MAJOR reason is I'll get to do this once when am at my friends house, and once am back home, I won't be able to access net on my phone.
Any help in this regards would be highly appreciated.
Thanx a lot in advance. Desperately waiting for a reply
Edit: I would also appreciate it if you guys can recommend any other must-have apps that I might have missed

Welcome to our Blade community
Root Explorer is better than Astro. If u want a free app though, try Solid Explorer
Ram manager isn't needed
Neither is CacheMate
Screenshot ER is better
Use MX Video Player. Plays all formats
Olive Office is a free replacement to the paid Documents To Go
Other recommended apps
SD Maid
QuickPic Gallery
FreeSpace
DropBox
Dolphin Browser
Ultimate Custom Clock Widget
Avast Antivirus
Andromizer
AdAway
Also, just for fun, try out my two apps : they're in my signature : Wifi Hack and Templates On The Go
Thanx a lot for the suggestions The must-have apps thread that I checked was pretty old, 2011, hence needed someone to check em out
By the way, do I really need Avast Antivirus ? I mean is the Android "scene" so corrupted with viruses, etc., ? Also, if it keeps running, do you think I'll see a decrease in performance in games/videos ?
Edit: Okay, so here's the updated list....
Root Explorer
PowerAMP Music Player
App 2 SD Pro
To Do List Widget Lite

SetCPU for Root Users
Autostarts
MX Video Player

What do you think ?
You don't really need avast. I haven't picked up a single virus till now
Also, I recommend System Tuner Pro over Autostarts

By the way, as soon as I get internet started on my number, I'll definitely check out your WiFi Hack and fool some friends
Do you really need a Screenshot external app? Why do you not use CFX internal screenshot function (keep power button pressed and select "Screenshot")?
SetCPU for Root Users is useless too (there's an extra menu under "Settings" to overclock your Blade).

A screenshot app is useful if u need to take a screenshot with a delay.
The inbuilt Overclocking is good for basic users, but SetCPU provides advanced functions to add profiles, manage the governors, etc
I think all is said power amp is the best music player, root explorer and solid explorer are both very good, i use all other apps said, maybe you can use Box ( or google drive) instead of Dropbox, you can get 50Go.
But idk if you know it but with ICS, you cant play HQ video (i say that cause you want to use a video player), you should also flash a new rom

Interesting... So which rom would you recommend ? I need something stable so that I can build on it, aka have my contacts and apps, etc., and mostly it will be for keeps and I won't be changing it anytime soon
I am interested quite a lot in 2D games (for 3D I have an Xbox 360), so tell me which rom would you recommend
Thanx a lot guys
I think you should test all, if you want a stable rom with good batery life try CM7 or Swedish Snow ( look the rom list for all roms)

Yes. As Gokh said, I too recommend cm7.
I use it myself. It's fast. Good battery life and great performance
I recommand you any new build of cm7 with swedish snow kernel

Thanx for the links dude. By the way, can you tell me the version (any info) of Flash in the above link ?

hey XDA, i figured that while i was looking around i might as well post a tutorial of my own. for the MT3GS users, this will give you the ultimate features out of your slide. Ok first off if you didnt see in parentheses "with root" then i jus sed it again and if you do not hav a rooted mytouch slide, look away from this post now! Now that that is out of the way, let us begin
1. (cant say this enough) ROOT THE **** PHONE
rooting the phone makes majority of the stuff on this page possible
2. Install a custom official rom
i installed CM7, quite possibly the greatest rom for the slide, introducing a Gingerbread 2.3.3 UI and a bus load of features
3. Enable data2ext
this is VITAL for users because the slide has at most what, 150mb of space? that sucks right! so data2ext takes the data within the internal memory, and puts it on your SD card [data2EXT(ernal)] if you do this correctly, it will give you 500mb of space (well really more like 482mb) this makes your phone EXTREMELY fast.
4. enable apps2sd
download modinstalllocation from the android market and give it super user permissions to force install all apps to SD (can be moved freely between SD and internal) at the time of me writing this post (june 2, 2011) i have roughly 195 apps installed on my slide with apps2sd and data2ext both enabled
[WARNING, APPS-2-SD AND APPS-2-EXT ARE 2 DIFFERENT THINGS, DO NOT USE APPS-2-EXT AND DATA-2-EXT AT THE SAME TIME BECAUSE DATA-2-EXT WILL BE REMOVED!!!!]
with data2ext
4. Install Flash player 10.- (whatever is the newest version)
to do this, you must have android sdk on your pc:
4a. put the flash player apk in the tools folder of android sdk
4b. open command prompt
4c. type in:
cd
cd c:\androidsdk\tools\ (or whatever path it is to get to the tools folder in SDK)
adb install (name of flash player file).apk
[it will install.......]
then it should say [success]
(note: can use this to install any app on your phone, i used it to install swype because CM7 did not have it)
4c. reboot your phone (do the process to get to the tools folder, then type adb shell, it should show a "#" type in "reboot" w/o quotations)
5. download CPU tuner from the android market
i used CPU tuner because it is free and official. you will need this to run high end games like Asphault 5 HD, Modern Combat: Sandstorm, etc. (this is wher it gets awesome). afterwards, open CPU tuner, click profiles, press the menu button on your phone, and click insert, create a new profile (i called mine gaming, because it helps run the stuff smoother, increases the power of coverage, both 2G/3G and Wifi, and a bunch of other stuff). I set mine to min. 787 MHz, max 864 MHz, and know that this doesnt come free, this thing will MURDER a battery, and the CPU tuner is designed to change profiles when battery is low unless you change the option in the settings!
[another warning: messing with the CPU settings can cause damage to your phone if you try and push it, if you do not have a reliable battery or screwed up phone, use caution when doig this.]
6. GET DOWNLOAD CRAZY
i have taken my phone to a new level! here is where the fun comes in:
A. get on the internet (or the XDA forums and search "[name of game] HVGA apk" or "gameloft games HD HVGA". and here is something little to no one knows, the Sony Xperia X8 has the same screen resolution (HVGA) and the games are compatible on the Slide, for example: people have modded the files in games like Asphault 5 so that it fits the screen, and they WORK on the slide. so far i currently have: Asphault 5, NOVA, NOVA 2, Guerilla Bob, Modern Combat Sandstorm, Gangstar: West Coast Hustle, Gangstar 2, Heroes of sparta, and am looking to find Galaxy on Fire 2. And hey if all you want is performance on non-modded currently compatible games, then it does the job too. It makes them faster and smoother!
I will be posting links once i get past the XDA rules (i am a new user and need to do 8 posts on the forum before i can post links!) i hope this helped everyone, and if you have something i can add to this list of things to do then feel free to post it in a comment or PM me
sincerely
Ognimnella
[EDIT (June 4th 2011)]
SKAm69 and gtmaster303, when i originally installed the HD games (thank you SKAm69 for your help) the games were EXTREMELY choppy even with the CPU tuned and almost 490mb of ram! so i went to the market (on PC internet) and found the latest version of flash, then googled "Flash Player 10.3 apk download" and downloaded it, then used Android SDK to install it! that simple!!
[EDIT (June 8th 2011)]
Please disregard the June 4th Edit flash does not work unfortunately. Thank everyone who allowed me to realize this! I apologize!

BTW, Galaxy On Fire 2 works, there's no need for hvga apk, just hvga cache.

The stock Slide has a version of Flash Lite that i think HTC implemented. I don't know if that works with non HTC Sense ROMs. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

If Flash doesn't work on the Slide, I kinda doubt that it was the installing of Flash 10.3 that improved the quality of your games. Maybe it was something else you did at the same time you installed it. Try uninstalling it and see if you have the same performance in your games.
video showing your flash working?

I know you have some how to in here, but I don't see where data2ext/app2sd is.
Do you want to make this post better? How about some basic info or links to how tos and a link to the Flash player?
In short: The main purpose is to create a list of testing protocols to prevent time and brain lost, which could maximized the efficiency/chance of create a most stable rom and minimized the bugs and bragging sound from tester.
Today just check in the forum, got a fancy idea through my mind.
After seeing many tester having trouble with new rom and some apps can't open or FC or whatsoever, May be we need to build out a testing protocol such as like set a test range, from apps to game, from system to UI, from camera to video, to provide convenient list of test standard for developers. (I mean the testing plan/protocol)
I'm not bragging about our developers are careless or something like that, they are amazing but still human, and sometimes they need to rush out the rom for the other but accidently slip through their mind, therefore need to spend extra time to create hotfix or upload entire rom again to the cloud. Plus, we can gather many tester perspective to united in one plan, therefore we can eliminate the smallest bugs as possible.
My first roughly plan of testing standard, just a roughly examples of the list, not my real consideration. But If everyone is supporting this plan, everyone can contribute which apps should be test and which apps are always got problem and need to keep in check list.
Apps:
flash light
operamini
astro
barnacle wifi
Gapps:
market
Gmail
youtube
Gmaps
gallery
G+
Launcher:
launcher pro
launcher 7
ADW EX
hardware:
back key
volume key
power key
center key
camera key
system apps:
setting apk
timescape apk
alarm apk
So, any thought?

Gosh it just an example list alright? I need many people and dev to approve and helps so i/we can put the real effort on it.
Good idea!
I understand that chefs have a lot of things very complicated to test.
Here are some items that I always test when I try new roms:
- Web browser without flash player.
- Web browser with flash player.
- Sending SMS / MMS (very important for me).
- Pictures in all resolutions.
- Install apps from the Market (facebook is often a source of problems).
- Stability of the 3G / wifi.
- Responsiveness to enter menus and screens.
LOOK ,
This is approved
But your whole idea is that devs forget some useful things
Ure right devs do forget WiFi tether and astro ...
But including them increases the ROM size . Not a very big issue
I really don't get you buddy

Flash light? What do you mean? Using the phone as a flashlight or photography flash?
I had a Mitsubishi phone once, that had such a bright blue screen, you could use it for a flashlight, and the X10's screen is great in the dark as one, too.
MMS/SMS, 3G/H/E, phone calls, import of vcf files for contacts, restore of apps and data with either TI or MyBackup, Bluetooth stack. Camera, Gallery, Music. Some sort of standard email/some standard sync. Anything else is a problem with the app.

Thanks for your suggestion
I am eagerly awaiting my a500, which is being shipped right now.
In the mean time, I'd like to know what kind of optimizations you would suggest to get the best performance and utility from the tablet, so that when I do get it i'm all ready to go.
I have an android phone, and I know a big thing for it, was replacing the launcher with ADW, Launcher Pro, or Zeam. How is the default launcher on the a500? Is there a better alternative?
Secondly, do the available roms provide noticeably better performance? I'll probably be rooting for CIFS support if DLNA doesn't work out anyways, so it'd be nice to know if the roms are worth it.
Are there any settings I should change from default that would make the performance better? Or anything else you suggest?
Thanks for all your help
Some of the roms do offer performance improvements.. Thou usually break something.. unless they are the near stock rooted themed ones..
same with overclocking each kernel offers different features you will have to find what suits your needs..
the biggest issue with custom roms kernels is trade off there is always something you will be trading.. WITH Many of them its battery life and app compatibility.Th biggest two most important things for me . well 3 really.. all require you to root your tablet
1 ad-hoc network support (just a single file to replace to allow this)
2 GPS.. There is a gps fix that allows much better sat locks.
3 Backup... Titanium backup needs root not to mention full backup thru CWM RECOVERY.. aCER Recovery installer from market can do this for you .
So other than rooting the device, you don't do anything else for performance gains?
you can put a custom kernel, the one i use allows overclocking up to 1.64GHz
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170319
That looks pretty awesome to me, bwassef.
I'd definitely use it just for the CIFS support, but its good to know OC is supported if I feel the need.
Are there any other things I could do, or that are necessary besides kernels & roms?

DON'T CHANGE A THING , not for several weeks. erica_renee gave that advice before and it's the best you can follow. You need to see how it's suppose to work and get a baseline so you know how it should work. Get all your applications running and working first then see what you'd like to change that it doesn't allow you to do. Then look at other ROM's.

The not changing a thing of course goes without saying. even thou yes i guess it does need to be spoken always.. If its not broken dont fix . Root and modify your device only if it does not suit your needs stock..
im Blonde i cant remember to type everything.. Giggles.
Of course, if I can get along just fine on 100% stock, I'll do that. However chances are I will need to route for CIFS support if the DLNA app doesn't work well enough.
I was actually hoping for more suggestions that don't require rooting. Like alternative launchers, or settings on the device.

I can tell you that in regards to a home launcher, ADW Launcher is great, and has awesome honeycomb integration. some (including me) notice a lag in the stock launcher and ADW takes care of that
NonRoot Performace Tweaks / Apps:
- Disable animations. (Settings/Screen/Animation).
- Set wifi to turn off when screen is off. (Settings/Wireless & Networks/Wifi Settings/Advanced)
- Turn off all unnecessary radios. (Bluetooth, GPS, Wifi)
- Set screen brightness to as low as you can or use auto broghtness.
- Use Opera Mobile instead of the stock browser. You may find one you like better, but this is the fastest one that I've found. Also, make sure to turn off Opera Turbo.
- Use File Manager HD as you as your file manager.
- MX Video player for video playback.
- Thumb Keyboard to replace the stock one.
- Stock launcher isn't bad, but I like to customize everything so I use ADW EX.
If I think of anymore I'll post em .
Thanks guys, these were the kind of tips I was hoping for.
Especially that there is value using ADW as an alternative launcher, and that there may be slight lag in using the stock launcher.
Has anyone tried the tablet loaded with widgets versus bare? Is it possible to run it with a lot of widgets without it slowing down a lot? I was also thinking of using some more minimal looking text widgets to displayed weather etc. instead of the fancy graphical ones. I'm assuming these will be lighter on resources?

I've got about 10 widgets plus a LWP and im still able to play games etc. with out any lag. But I'm also rooted with many different mods and tweaks I've done, so I'm not sure how it would be on a stock OS.
Hello, As you all probably know the space for install files, basic settings etc is an issue for the Xperia PLAY; Other, newer phones out there have better space for installing applications, settings and images.
I use my phone for everyday use, along side another (X-Play) for my work life, (I love seeing peoples faces when they realise (If I can paraphrase) "I can haz games Consoole") I use my main phone, which in this instance is from herein "Phone-A" for every purpose from listening to music whilst jogging/at the gym, Texting, calling, "pinging" on various chat programs, editing documents, looking at pictures, surfing the net to Games and even occasionally taking photos.
Phone-B however is used solely used for making phone calls, emails and texting. Which Isn't much of an issue as its solely used for Work. I replaced that dreaded Wildfire when I had the funds, thank god.
My issue is that on Phone-A I'm having "Insufficient space!" messages almost EVERY SINGLE DAY. I've done everything I can bar deleting apps that I Use on a regular basis (Games, Music player etc) heres a list of the applications installed below;
ROOTED, 16GB Card
Homescreen - Nemus Launcher - 2.73Mb
Games -
SIMS 3
BRUCE LEE
CRASH BANDICOOT
BIA2
MODERNCOMBAT2
DRAG RACING
BIA2 FREE HD+ (??)
GT FREE+ HD
BLOOD AND GLORY
R6 HD
BFBC2
ASPHALT 6
NFS HOT PURSUIT
GTA3 10YR HD
ZOMBIEVILLE
MINECRAFT
Music - MIXZING - 8.11Mb
Web - DOLPHIN HD - 11.94Mb
I'm Rooted and not afraid to use it, if you can let me know of some files and applications to remove (Preferably non of the games, apart from GT,ZOMBIEVILLE & BIA) I don't mind doing it.
If you can also give me an alternative to the home screen, music player and webbrowser which are lightweight and yet still have full functionality that would be great! Music is a big part of my life, headphones go everywhere with my (I travel alot) I spend alot of time in the desert (Afg'n, iRagg) so these phones are sturdy and yet still VERY powerful in there capabilities.
I know theres alot of games but Hey, its a gaming phone why not game on it?
I have however removed some pre-installed crap that came on it but now I'm looking to lightweight my kit as I do my full kit when I'm working (I work in Close Protection, so a good phone is essential )

For the love of God, man... move them ****s to SD!
Also learn basic ADB navigation so you can move more to your SD card with the setInstallLocation 2 command.
Then check out THIS SAFE LIST so you can debloat your phone.
Do you have 2.3.3? If so, ditch that **** for 2.3.4. It's a difference as drastic as having a base of 250MB compared to 2.3.3's 180MB. It saves you a lot of pain in the ass dalvik-cache insanity, and FTF installers are too easy to use to take any BS.
With this checklist knocked out:
• Get FW 2.3.4
• ADB setInstallLocation 2
• Root
• Debloat
I've been able to cram 205 apps on this puny 400MB internal storage phone, and still have 140MB left.
Holy God damn, i'm running 2.3.2 I didnt even check :/
I just downloaded ZEAM which is 325Kb, which I'm happy with. But the above listed files, err Dolphin and Mixzing.. Err that is on Card!
I've DEBLOATED, Rooted but what is this ADB setinstall2? Is it moving apps from Phone to SD, like I can do in SuperManager?
If I update to 2.3.4 will I loose root?

ADB setinstall2 moves apps to SD automatically when installing i think
You will lose root if you use flashtool to update but OTA (over the air) you wont, even if you do lose root you can get it back easily using superoneclick
If your so worried about space why don't you partition 1gb off the card and use that for apps using Link2SD from the market, that saves phone memory and you'll never have to worry about space error messages again
I'll do a partition in a while, but at the moment I'm doing an OTA update.
I just had a Sh*t scare, looked down at my phone (On charge) and the blue update bar had disapeered and then the screen went black. Its back now though..
I always go with OTA, never touch flashtools unless I know what I'm truely doing (Give me a games console or PC any day!!)
Right so I've tried 3 times now Im getting a "Software could not update" message and its still not doing F'all So im stuck on 2.3.2 untill I can figure out why...
You probably deleted a system app/file. It won't update if that's the case. Just use flashtool. Get the .42 firmware put it in the firmware folder in flash tool, put phone into flash mode, flash, done. Easy
I ended up using the official Sony companion thingy bob, one word for this situation.
SNAFU.
Lost ROOT, added all sorts of crap included FIFA, star battalion, support etc ahhhh FUBAR.
Flash tool it is then if it can root..
EDIT:: I CAN HAZ R00T! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859, done done done! Thanks, Cool guys
Well done, pat on the back
Gratz to figuring it out. However, all this could be avoided in the future if n00bs would actually check out the threads already posted to see what options they have before posting. Just sayin'.
+1

Hi folks. I'm sorry to trouble everyone again.
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DEV and I AM NOT A COOK.
I want to know, is there a way, where I can say take a custom ROM, and then modify the existing parts so that i can reduce the RAM footprint.
I have no experience using any ROMS except Ilyaa's CM10.1 custom ROM which he cooked up. Even on stock gingerbread i only toyed for it for a day after i bought it and immediately followed the instructions and did a custom firmware (I even had a thread about it because the first time i did it i accidently deleted /boot)
What I had in mind is to somehow replace bloated apps with apps that uses FAR lesser RAM footprint.
For example, the Trebuchet launcher is fine, but I wanted something more minimalistic so i went for Lightning Launcher and also Zeam Launcher (TagHome launcher is not available for 4.2, sadly)
What i discovered was Smart Launcher uses about 16MB of RAM. Lightning initially only used 3.1MB, (then somehow bloated up to 20MB even when i did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING) and ZEAM launcher is hovering around 15MB.
I am not sure if this is ROM related issue, but I want to ask users of other ROMS (especially the custom ICS ROMs like MIUI and DZO AURORA since its considered the best of all U8800 custom ROMs) if you can reduce the footprint?
Truthfully, I have tried GREENIFY and also another memory app that another forumer has recommnded for setting minimum values, but i still keep getting ONLY 20-40MB free RAM. I have replaced the super bloatware Facebook for Android by Facebook and Twitter and replaced them with SCOPE (far lesser RAM used than both app combined)
Does anybody have any idea of what we can do?
As far as i know when u are connected to the internet most of the apps run in the background and thus u have less available ram. Widgets also drain a lot, try to avoid them. U can tweak some kernel values so that the system will make more available free ram , like minfree values.

THis is what i did. However the it does not affect my memory, and i suspect it was the ROM because of the previous versions was better. I have not tried ICS though.
Have you tried using an app called Greenify?

Yes. I have. I have also stated that very explicitly.

Try the app memory manager and on presets choose the option Strict....

Well, that did not helped much, actually. I'm not sure what is the real issue behind it, but I'm still tinkering with some of the ROMs and installing what I perceive as low-RAM-usage apps.
Currently i'm running GREENIFY and MEMORY MANAGER (that sets the minfree values) and hopefully by later i'll come out with something useful.
I'm not that of a poweruser, so using another custom kernel then doing some adjustments not specified by the dev is a little too much to me, unless I know i can follow through with the steps.
update:
Some of the apps that I have perceived as low RAM usage and downright functional (not beautiful, but gets things done)
Launcher:
- Smart Launcher
- Zeam Launcher
- Lightning Launcher
Facebook:
- Atrium
- Scope (Twitter and Facebook)
Twitter:
- Twicca
- Scope
- Echofon
Google +
(no alternative)
Media:
- Quickpix (gallery alternative)
- Hiki Player (music player alternative)
- Nano player (music player alternative, bare bones)
- MX Player (video player)
- Tubemate (at least you can greenify this over the stupid Youtube App)
E-Mail:
- default email client
- K9 email client
Contacts and messaging:
- Contacts + (this one does a lot)
- pansi sms (sms alternative)
File Managers:
- Root Browser Lite
- ES File Explorer.
That's about it for the time being.
At this time 3rd June 2013, Google is updating the core apps. I am unable to uninstall the email apk and gmail apk.
