[Q] Wifi keeps reconnecting

My S4 keeps reconnecting to my wifi for some reason. I get the toast notification saying "Connected to <SSID>" that will sometimes pop up every 5-30 seconds, but it never goes more than 30 minutes without doing it. My router is an Asus RT-AC66U. I've tried forcing 2.4Ghz only, 5Ghz only, changing the preamble (short, long, auto), changing the channel (manually specifying each channel, and also tried auto), and even manually assigning an IP address on the phone. None of these things help.
I have "check for internet service" under the advanced wifi options disabled, and also have it set to keep wifi on during sleep.
The phone shows Very Good signal quality. Using wifi analyzer shows a signal strength of between -45 to -68 db, depending on what room I'm in, so that's definitely not the issue. It even does it sitting in the same room as the router. No other devices have an issue, including my roommate's S3.
I can fix it by turning off wifi power save mode (*#0011#), but then my phone heats up quite a bit whenever I'm using it, and my battery drains at 10%/hour even when I'm not connected to wifi. So that's not really a solution.
Is there any other fix for this? It's a bit ridiculous. I'll load a webpage and it'll interrupt halfway through when it re-connects to wifi. Since it keeps reconnecting to wifi, it causes all the phone's connections to be re-initiated, and also seems to trigger Google Services to update the phone's location. This results in Google Services (NetworkLocationLocator) holding a wakelock for 1/3 of the time.

The issue has mostly gone away with the new firmware. Also, disable WMM power saving on your router. That really seems to help a lot. Lastly, if that still doesn't help, disable IPv6 on the phone if it's enabled on the router (this requires root, and has to be done every time wifi connects. I used Tasker for it. But with the latest firmware it's not necessary for me).

thank you for your advices but I have the latest firmwar and rest of the advices dont work for me. I dont want to root it also.
Looking for a normal way to solve this issue, not to send to repair.

May be a fix?
1) type *#0011#
2) press menu button and select wifi
3) turn off power saving mode
4) restart
Alternative
1) download terminal emulator
2) type ping google.com
Credits to the one who discovered this.

It spends 10% more battery. this must not be the solution.

Any solutions ?

I have the same problem but I think it is mainly caused by the router itself. I have TP-link and my neighbor has a Netgear router. When I connect to my neighbor it stays and never disconnects but when I connect to mine, it randomly drops and re-connects. I have read on some forums that if you set router to one mode B, G or N "only!" it may work. Also check out advanced router settings such as Beacon Interval, RTS Threshold and Fragmentation Threshold. (google these settings you may find some useful info)
One other option is to flash your router firmware with dd-wrt. But make sure your router is capable of such modification otherwise you may brick your router!!!
I guess when it comes to routers S4's are picky.

I would hope most people would have tried that long before coming to the forum to complain about the issue.
The issue is WiFI closing & not auto signing back in whether mobile data is on or not.

It's simple option is in settings wifi

Yes the switch is simple but has nothing to do with the "closing WiFi" issue some are experiencing.

Guide .. ? What are you talking about. It's clearly a menu option in the settings. It's not like it's hidden lol

unchecking this doesnt do nothing....im sitting across from my router and its telling me my signal is weak.
Browsing on vzw 4g lte is faster than my 50mb comcast wifi connection? lol if i browse with wifi its a slow lag.

Same for me. Moreover, with the new firmware, if it loose the connection while the option is unticked, it says that it will be re-ticked automatically...
This WiFi bug is really annoying.

My phone has stopped dropping the connection & is behaving well. But I have no idea what solved it. I factory reset router & phone. But it made little difference but after a day it's behaving perfectly & it's currently on my wifi & has not dropped for 12 hrs & no more constant pop up messages.
I have no idea what cured it. But one thing I did last night was went to play store & updated every app on the phone.... maybe there was a conflict in one of those apps.. that's all I can think. I left "adblock" off this time as that routes wifi data but I'd removed that several days ago.

I'm curious what Access Point you are using and how old it is? Are there firmware updates for it that you have not applied?

I've read somewhere that cancel all existing WiFi connections and make them as new (with the new firmware), could be of help. I'll give it a try.

I've found the menu bit how to turn off the power save mode? No toggles there. ..

Wifi problem
I've tried all the solutions on here,and nothing works. Very poor samsung for such an expensive device. If a £30 roku box can have perfect wifi why can't a £600 device

I must admit that wifi performance is quite poor for the moment.
I get 6 or 7 Mb/s out of a 25 Mb connection. My S4 , Note 1, and Ipad 3 al do around 20Mb/s while testing simultaneously

what does change if i turn it off? what's the use off the power save mode? i know it's to reduce the power ussage, but i want details.

You can probably find what it does on the Internet (Google), but it doesn't truly help. My guess is that these performance issues are router dependant. I'm waiting to get my hands on the new Asus RT-AC68U router to upgrade my yesteryear 300 mb/s router. In fact I just ordered it, it will arrive tomorrow. Will post here to let people know if it helped...

Well I was right, my shaky Wifi connection using my Sitecom WL-351 router is a thing of the past. Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections through my brand new Asus RT68AC router work excellently!!
What this very probably means is that the Note 3 uses a Wifi chipset that doesn't work all that well with certain other (older model?) router chipsets. The Asus I bought to test this is quite expensive, but I am sure a regular router can work well given it is compatible. What needs to be done is verify (through a Poll or by researching known chipset incompatibility problems) what chipsets and/or routers / brands work well. Unless you expect Samsung to fix this in software, which often is impossible - unless Samsung can force an update of the chipset firmware.

Unfortunately Brand names don't mean compatibility since various models use varying router chipsets.

note 3 wifi to ac wifi

I just purchased a asus 68u wifi router. It has the ac band but im only able to connect to the n band. I tried entering into the service mode to see if the wifi power saving mode is on but none of the codes will let me enter the service mode. Maybe its because im rooted. Any ideas.

I'm unsure of what you did to get to the settings to try and turn off Wi-Fi power saving but did you try dialing *#0011# on the dialer and then hit menu?

I read up on the all about service mode and figured it out. Im now on the ac band and getting a link speed of 433. My router says it can get up to 1300. Is the note 3 limited to 433 link speed

Is there anyway to connect to my homewifi faster? I've selected to only show 5ghz wifi networks and I'm only seeing two when I enable wifi yet it dosen't connect to my wifi for maybe 5-10 seconds. Is this a problem with the rom/kernel? I don't remember connecting being this slow when I was on stock 5.1.
If I can change connect speed through the rom/kernel that would be best. Otherwise is there an app that can do it?

i cant see why you would choose 5ghz over 2.4ghz maybe thats the reason for your problem

5Ghz allows for faster throughput (more bandwidth available) - uses 80 mhz channels vs 20 mhz on the 2.4ghz.
I noticed the slow connection too. Seems if you open wifi settings, it connects immediately.

Did you try changing the channel in your router?

Haven't tried changing the channel. Will report back after I get home after work.

I can say that problem is with ROM.
It has very slow auto connection time.
To connect faster I am using:
- drop down notification menu - tap wifi menu where its possible to choose wifi's from that setting - just wait, as soon as it turns on wifi and actually starts to scan area it will auto connect faster than when you just turn on wifi and wait.

I confirm this behavior on XT1575 as well. It takes quite a long time to connect when i enable WiFi.
But if I enter the WiFi settings, it connects instantly.
And i think it's like this since Android 6. I don't recall having this issue on Android 5.

I can't say I've noticed any problems connecting to WiFi networks at home.
I'm running 6.0 stock (Feb 2016 security update) rooted to hell and back.
I have access to five different WiFi networks at home, and am registered to all five for convenience.
I use an app called Best WiFi to auto-connect to the strongest signal whenever my current signal drops below a user-configurable strength threshold.
Perhaps that's the reason I'm not feeling this issue?

I've been using this app for years, since Android 4.0, and across four or five different devices now.
Edit - Before the inevitable questions. I live in a basement and have my own personal WiFi network down there. Upstairs, we have two network piping out of the office (2.4 GHz and an associated 5 GHz link). For the far side of the home, we have a WiFi extender that mirrors and extends those two signals coming from the office (2.4 GHz-Ext and 5 GHz-Ext).

My report:
Whether connecting to 2.4 Ghz (20/40 Mhz) or 5 Ghz (20/40/80 Mhz) the connectspeed is between 5-15 seconds if singlepressing on the wifitoggle. If longpressed it takes about 2-3 seconds. Either this is a problem with the rom or this is the intended behaviour in Marshmallow. But this was not the behaviour in Lollipop as far as I remember. Of course you could argue this a nonissue since longpressing the wifitoggle is the solution. However I would like singlepressing to behave the same since I use Gravitybox to hide the statusbar when pressing 2-state tiles.

Yeah this is a huge pain in the ass. I set up a WiFi shortcut on my home screen so I would start using WiFI more to save battery, but it takes so long for it to finally connect. I also have Tasker turn WiFi on in the morning when my alarm goes off, and it takes so long. It took a few seconds in Lollipop, and now it takes 10+ seconds in Marshmallow. It's ridiculous. Anyway there is no real fix except going into the settings or tapping the drop-down toggle multiple times, as others stated.

I notice the same thing too. Wifi takes long to connect on boot. When I go to connect wifi off, it always shows the routers in the previous area before showing what's in the current area. I turn wifi off when leaving home. I'll connect to a public router, but will still show my home router before showing any around me. I had a Galaxy S5 before and wifi connected right away.

First off, I am not sure if the OP is turning wifi on first when arriving at home and then seeing the delay, or if Wifi is already ON when you arrive home (EDIT: just reread OP and it appears you are turning it ON - see below), but I leave Wifi ON all the time and do not see any delay when I get home (I pull into my garage and my apps are already updating via my home wifi before I park my car).
There are various steps involved in "getting onto wifi" that don't just involve the client device (authentication to the access point; getting an available IP address from your AP or a separate router, and the stability/software quality of those devices, for example). but you may want to consider a few things to speed up the process at home regardless if Wifi is on, or you turn it on first:
1) go into "Saved Networks" in your wireless settings and "forget" any networks you don't need
2) make sure the device on your network issuing IP addresses (DHCP server software built into your router or AP, whichever you use - also make sure only ONE of the them is acting as DHCP server) has enough available IP's in its pool - better yet, assign the same IP to your MotoX's MAC address (set up a static IP in your routers LAN/DHCP settings if it has them so your MotoX gets the same IP every time)
3) while I agree with another poster about avoiding the 2.4 GHz for Wifi (congestion and more interference), even many 802.11n client radios today don't support 5GHz so keep that in mind if you shut down 2.4GHz in your home completely
4) Use WPA2 with PSK for authentication AND make sure your home SSID is being broadcast (not hidden, which they really aren't anyway with the right tools - A strong WPA2 PSK password is better security even if the world can see your SSID.
4) If you do turn Wifi On and Off, consider leaving it ON and see if that helps your connection time (I suspect it will If you are concerned about battery drain, you can disable wifi during sleep in wireless settings, but I don't have a battery issue with Wifi on 24/7. The Wifi radio beaconing for SSID's or even staying connected to an SSID in the background, when you're not using Wifi, is a very minimal power drain compared to having your screen brightness higher than you need (you can however turn off the annoying wifi network notification setting).

For those with this delay, are you running xposed with gravitybox? Tried disabling gravitybox? It maybe GB that's introducing the delay. Need feedback from those running stock.
If stock exhibits similar behavior then it's probably characteristic of the quick toggles in the moto x. The delay appears to be in the actual wifi connection phase, not acquiring ip. As once it actually connects, IP acquisition is almost instant. Toggling wifi off then on directly through settings is very fast, maybe 3-4 seconds.
I have a moto g lte (xt1045) on cm13 which takes about 5 seconds to connect after toggling wifi off then back on. The moto x takes a good 15 seconds.

@ech1253: I've checked everything you suggested and you are right, having wifi on will make it connect almost instantly.
@gpz1100: I'm running xposed with gravitybox. Disabling gravitybox didn't change anything. I'd rather not uninstall xposed and/or go back to stock so if someone on stock without xposed could chime in that would be helpful.

It does it on stock android 6 for me and on a custom rom as well. Since day 1 with the moto x but at least wifi works just a long delay that no other android flagship from suffers from. :S

Note 3 (SM-N900V) won't connect to 5GHz 802.11ac

Hi,
My rooted Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900V) running the stock KitKat 4.4.2 stopped connecting to 5GHz 802.11ac AP's. I first noticed it at a friends house, then again at home. I can connect to 2.4GHz 802.11ac, 802.11n & 802.11g just fine. When I try to connect, it says "Connecting" for a second or two, then drops to "Saved, secure" with no other errors or messages. Once it's saved, pressing "Connect" doesn't seem to do anything.
My home AP is a TP-Link Archer C9 running the latest firmware. The 2.4GHz & 5GHz bands have different SSID's. I read about issues with Samsung devices & 5GHz channels so I tried changing it from auto to 44 to 36 to no avail. Note that both of my Samsung Tab S 8.4's and my wife's Note 3 (same model & OS) along with all my laptops can connect to the 5GHz frequency just fine. I run a separate DHCP server and tried manually removing the entry for my Note 3 to no avail.
In the Wifi Advanced settings, I have "Passpoint" off and "Auto network switch" unchecked.
I also read about disable Wifi Power Saving Mode by dialing *#0011# but dialing that only brings me to a Verizon error message.
I tried using the app Wifi Connection Manager to wipe all the wifi connections (the "Fix Wi-Fi Problems" option) but that didn't help.
Next I'll try to see if I can figure out how to use logcat to get some sort of error message.
After many hours of reading about similar issues, I've run out of options to try short of factory wiping which I'd prefer to avoid. I'd be grateful for any other suggestions.

I tried using the app Wifi Connection Manager to wipe all the wifi connections (the "Fix Wi-Fi Problems" option) but that didn't help.
Next I'll try to see if I can figure out how to use logcat to get some sort of error message.
After many hours of reading about similar issues, I've run out of options to try short of factory wiping which I'd prefer to avoid. I'd be grateful for any other suggestions.

It could simply be a lousy antenna connection or that your 5GHz radio died. I presume you see the 5GHz SSID when searching.. so the radio itself is probably ok.
Take the back off your phone, using s jewlers screwdriver, check the screws around the outside edge on the back if the phone. If any are loose, that can cause reception issues. Do not overtighten! Just make sure they're firm and not loose.

Thanks for the reply.
After powering off, I removed the rear cover & battery and made sure all 12 screws were nice and snug but not overtightened. I also loosened and retightened the one next to the SD card slot since some diagrams indicate the wifi antennas are located there. As an aside, do you know what the "L" and "R" labels are next to round buttons on either side of the SD card? I haven't found any documentation on that yet.
Unfortunately, it didn't help. The SSID shows with a strong signal but still won't connect. This might be the issue, though, because the 5GHz SSID drops to no signal every now and then but that's inconsistent.
I'll try to figure out to use logcat to see if I can find an error but let me know if you or anyone else can think of other things to try.

No idea on the buttons, on mine there are are just brown 'fillers' in them.

Mine recently had the issue as well (I have an Archer TP-Link C5). After testing wifi and seeing I still used the 5G at work, hard and soft rebooting my Ubiquity Uni-Fi AC AP, and even double checking with the WiFi Analyzer app, I finally went into the router to check if maybe the MAC was no longer registered. Ultimately, I thought to just unbind the phone and re-enable it. I only got as far as to unbind the IP (there is a checkbox in 'IP & MAC Binding' -> 'Binding Settings') and suddenly it connected and is working again. So, if you happen to have bound a static IP to the MAC address, uncheck that box and it magically works again. The IP stays the same between connections so I guess it is not super important.
Just an idea.
EDIT:
Okay, turns out the issue resolves around the fact that you have a conflicting IP address on your network and the phone software decides to disable the connection rather than obtain a new IP. I found the best way to resolve this is to set all my major devices with an address assignment on the network (you can find this under DHCP -> Address Reservation).
So, though related, the above issue turned out only a temporary fix. My phone was trying to get the same IP as my Ubiquity AP despite the MAC binding for the AP.
