Can anyone offer a suggestion why applications that need root are denied even though I have cm9 installed? Superuser just keeps denying them when I try to give them root, like Apex Launcher (It needs root for certain widgets)
maybe go the play store and see if there is an update for the superuser app or open the app and update the SU binaries. if that doesn't work, maybe try reflashing CM9 [just wiping delvik cache] and see if that reminds it it is indeed rooted.
Try app called rootcheck to verify you are properly rooted:

Oke so the app tells me I'm not rooted, is there an easy fix for that? Seems kinda weird seeing as its a custom rom.

Wipe and reinstall. Don't update binarys. I know they have been causing problems on the latest update

I'm curious if anyone who installed the OTA update has successfully rooted their device.
I was on a fully stock unrooted phone when I applied the 4.5.91 OTA update yesterday, wondering if anyone else is in the same scenario and has rooted their device after the new update
Yes, it was fairly simple using the preinstall method in the development thread
Link is in my signature as many people don't know what the "pre-install" method is/was.
I updated using Ken's safe images and used the preinstall method. Worked like a charm. Here you go:

How do you clear superuser app data? Do you mean within the superuser app itself in settings that says clear logs?
I just rooted my Atrix with the preinstall method also. I updated to GB OTA from stock Froyo 2.2.2.

Settings >> Applications >> Manage Applications >> scroll to Superuser >> Clear App Data button
Without doing this I was getting tons of FCs from the Superuser app and had to root again. I read about this fix on the EVO 4G forum.
Also, the Superuser apk included in the preinstall image is not current - after you install go to the Market and you'll find there's a new version. Once it installs run SU and it'll say there's an updated su binary available. Click ok, yes, whatever, give the app root permission, and you'll be updated and rooted.

Thanks, you make my life easier with your explain.
Do you lose data/settings if you use the briefmobile method? (e.g. the old gingerbreak method wipes your internal storage)
Also just to be totally clear : does the briefmobile method works fine with 100% stock unrooted no BL-unlock OTA 2.3? (i.e. did not use any sbf, cwm , nothing pure stock with OTA gingerbread). For example I read the preinstall thread and it seems to be guys talking about flashing sbfs. Then there are a million warnings not to flash sbfs if you've gone OTA gingerbread. So confused
There's just so much info floating around and its quite daunting TBH even for someone like me who's custom ROMmed Samsungs and HTCs before.

No you don't lose any files from the method I've posted about. Also, Gingerbreak didn't have that effect for everyone - I didn't lose anything when I did that on 4183.
And yes, it works on stock Motorola provided Gingerbread. That's what I have.

I'm trying that method and it keeps saying "command not found"
so I tried this method here
http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/motorola-atrix-hacks/3039-root-2-3-4-using-fastboot.html
and it's telling me there is no space when I type "cp /preinstall/su /system/bin/su"
any idea?
hi guys! was the latest update of Atrix 4g is also applicable for International version?please advise...sorry for OT...

You can ignore that first command not found and just continue through the rest of the steps. Worked for me.

Were you rooted before updating?
I was rooted prior to this update and used the preinstall method to gain root again. Apps were not asking for root permissions.
ive never been rooted before. once i do the fastboot reboot and get loaded back up. I try the adb shell command and i get cant find device. What am i doing wrong?
I just uninstalled and reinstalled Superuser from the Market instead of clearing the app data.

Did you update superuser on market? I found out by updated this application it will cause problems to your applications needing root acces.... Fix::: uninstall update of superuser app in market... Once done this... Select superuser from your phone and at the screen popup hit ok... It will revert back to working superuser... Meaning your apps needing root will work once again....

An even newer update to superuser should have fixed this.
Beware of the recent update to 3.04, there are frequent reports of apps requiring root access not working due to superuser fcing. YMMV.

Thanks for the quick response, however I've done that -having the same result...Tried apps after that...still no go. Ran root checker "No Root Acess." Unless its the Titanium Backup update. Other than those 2, I haven't done anything else.

Uninstall su and reflash your rom
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
Oops
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
So far unsuccessfull at uninstalling su...theres only the update option from the market...at this point lost..
I have had the same issue. So far the only workable solution that I have come up with is to:
- Delete the App data for Superuser (in Manage Apps).
- Run Super User and change the Automatic Response to Allow (in superuser preferences).
Not ideal because any app that requests su will get it. Have to keep an eye on the log until a fix if there are any apps that you do not want to have su.
Thanks...was able to delete su app data and access su...yet still no access to root apps (su 2.3.6.3)
Just reflash rom

Confirmed. Recent update fixed issues.
my fix was...
Uninstall updates as stated in earlier post ;-) Then a restart or Reboot is all is needed. no need to reinstall the rom thats not the answer.
No issues here, have the latest superuser.
Downgraded, Restarted, rebooted su force closes still...any suggestions?

Thanks evo4gnoob for the keen eye and the catch! I've already uninstalled superuser -- awaiting a more stable release.
Once again, thanks a million! =)

Install busybox installer from the market and install/update busybox. See if that fixes your issues. Also try installing SuperSu from the market, opening it, and updating su binary when it opens.

I ran busybox free and it says it's unable to verify whether or not certain utilities needed for this app to run are present and functional on my device. This problem could be caused by a device that is not properly rooted or by superuser settings that are misconfigured

Did you have the apps that use root before you rooted? I've noticed with some apps (that work with and without root) sometimes dont register that root is installed on your device so perhaps you should try redownloading them from the play store.

He should've used voodoo over the air rootkeeper to back up n save his root. So once you update, you can easily restore rot with one click in that app instead of having to use roottoolkit again.

I will report back later.
Just rerooted and it looks like everything is working, thanks everybody
I was using device perfectly till today. I've installed nocturnal kit lastly. Don't know if it's related to this or not but it seems i've lost my root access. Now I can't use CM file manager which was working well and can't edit any app's settings in paranoidandroid. Both need root access. It keeps saying "couldn't get privileges" So is it possible to lose root by installing apps, mods or any software issues?
Not likely. Just go to your superuser app and make sure root access is being given.

Try wiping cache for superuser. And you can try switching to superSU, it's better than the original.
