Once again, Att is pissing me off... They don't sell off contract at the stores... Man.. they are so lame...
i wouldn't be surprised considering stocks are scarce enough
Huh?
I bought mine off contract at the store this am. Corporate store too. Not even a sideways glance.
They only had 10 shipped, 5 of each color, and two for displays..

I will never go into an AT&T store again. I needed a replacement sim for my iPad and they refused to give me one without buying an F'n accessory, the cheapest one was $26. I just ordered one off Amazon for $4. From now on, it's the online store or Amazon.
Call customer service and complain. AT&T is not supposed to do that, but some stores do it anyway.
Wow. I manage an AT&T store in norcal and I have never heard of either of those complaints. We do free SIM cards (sometimes we ask for $10 on iPad or micro Sims cuz they cost us) and off contract phones. You have to realize that the reps earn commission from contacts so the rep probably didn't want to waste his time. I really don't agree with that but next time just ask for a manager.

how much commission do you guys make?
Next time call up att. They'll ship you a new one for free or put credit on your account to get it free at the store. While my corporation store also moaned when I had them get att on the line they handed the similar card over.

That does not sound right...I would check a different store. The sales rep may make a commission on the contract but ATT the company makes money from the no commitment price on the phone and not the subsidy. Short term thinking is what dooms companies...
I bought mine off contract from amazon for 549. I don't even have AT&T account. Just StraightTalk.

I suppose that is pretty relative to store volume, phone type and features on type account. It's not much, you really have to sell several phones per day to get a decent comm check.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Corporate stores SHOULD do the sim replacement for free, no questions asked. If they refused, time to call in and complain.
As for selling the phone full price, reps don't make ANY commission on a no commitment sale, they get paid on the contract and the accessories. So they probably wanted to horde the phones while the supply was scarce, giving it only to those customers they were getting paid on. I know when Sprint released the first EVO, we were under strict orders from corporate to not sell them at full price until the second week of release. I doubt AT&T passed out those orders, but something to think about.
They don't make any commissions on none contract sales but they also don't need to spend their time setting up the account. It's like buying a candy bar at 7-Eleven. Once they're done with the transaction, they can go on to help the next contract customer.
Probably less to do with time and more to do with scarcity.

Thank you soo much! After that Verizon BS, I had to consider going to a provider that was honestly my absolute last option .. AT&T .. and I refreshed on Amazon before midnight and they didn't have the white 16gb available .. but I checked again after I read your post an hour ago and there she was .. $549, 2-day shipping, no tax
I'll pray for the Verizon folks .. Meanwhile ... I will be crossing my fingers for solid HSPA+/LTE coverage and Happily flashing on Tuesday
Ohhh .. and Amazon has a 30-Day return policy to go with that Off Contract ... #Winning!!
Same here, corporate att store in lynnwood wa. Guy refused to sell the phone for no commitment price. Not only that, he said they wouldn't be able to sell them without a contract for seven months or so. I guess I could get a manger and raise hell but why bother. Here in Washington, sales tax is almost 10% so I would have ended paying 605 no commitment price. I guess I can get one on craigslist cheaper and no taxes. Lame thing is, amazon charges sales tax in washington, provided that its sold by amazon itself.

I just canceled my Best Buy preorder when they told me that they would not price match Sprint if they marked the price up.

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
When I called them they said they didn't know and normally don't know anything till the day before.
They were pretty much useless to me. Sprint has already announced the price so the chances are pretty slim they will just all the sudden increase the price.
My Sprint store would not let me pre-order. They said they would be happy to call me when the EVO arrives.
EDIT: Best Buy sold me a $ 50 gift card to use for the purchase of the phone or anything else in the store (or cashed in). In my opinion this is a no lose situation. If Best Buy decides to up the price (which I HIGHLY doubt) then I can just cash in the card and walk over to the Sprint store.
I also just looked at the Best Buy site online and the fine print keeps deferring back to the Sprint website for more details. To me this means the price will be the same, $450 unsubsidized - $150 upgrade - $100 mail-in rebate = $200.
EDIT-2: It's looking more and more like TheBiles is correct. More than one person has reported that BB is going to charge $600.

There has been a lot of talk that Best Buy will charge $600 off contract, which is what I'm ordering. They've done the price gouging in the past as well. Does anyone know the off contract price at Radio Shack?
EDIT: Apparently Radio Shack is only accepting preorders for contracted phones. They told me that they don't yet know what the final price will be. The Sprint store told me to come back in a week and they would probably be taking names for reserves. Though I'm not too worried about them selling out here.

I went into a Sprint store because Best Buy in Washington state will apparently not ever carry Sprint phones in store (they said they can only carry 3 major carriers and chose AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon) - I assume this is because T-Mobile US headquarters is in Factoria, WA outside of Seattle?
The Sprint sales manager entered some info into the computer (my Name, Social Security Number, Address, current phone number) and looked like he wrote my name and some sort of confirmation number on a post-it note. He said I have one reserved for the 4th and they will call me the 3rd to schedule an appointment to pick it up after the morning rush has died down. I expressed concern because I wanted to make sure I would have an Evo if they sold out, and he said not to worry, I will definitely get one.
I'll go to a Sprint store in the morning. The dude at BB said "you do know it's gonna be around $700 right?" .. uhhhh no thanks pal..

Yeah, my Best Buy was totally ****ing clueless. They were all like "Um, we have no idea what the price will be, but we do know that we will not match the price on it." I was like not a chance.
I work at a sprint store in WA, we are officially taking pre orders for the phone. I hear they have a ton in the warehouse, but with the magnitude of interested I'd get to it quick.

As a sprint employee, can you tell me if there's any "official" preorder process? I didn't receive a receipt or confirmation number, although the employee seemed to write something down after putting my info into the computer. I did tell him I would be signing up for a new 2yr contract as well.
There should be, I was told there was, but the link to whatever they are working on is broken thusfar. It should be up soon. What our store is doing is taking down names, numbers and emails, and then transfering them to the real pre order list once it becomes available. After that you will get an email with the pre order confirmation.
For anyone wondering if BB will raise the price, they will. Look at their off contract pricing for the Hero and Moment. $599 and $629 respectively. No doubt BB will raise the price. I need to see if Sprint will charge me a deposit to open my own account again instead of my family's account. If I can I pay my $200 etf, plus $199 and it still comes out cheaper than $450.
A friend of mine and myself got into a bit of a disagreement last night over bestbuy etfs. Long story short he got a phone from bb cancelled the service and kept the phone. Will bb come after him with a etf?
I know sprint didn't charge him a etf but will bb come after him for a etf! I made a $75 bet with him that bb would come after him with a seperate etf. But he showed me his receipt/contract paperwork and other than the info about sprint etf, there's NOTHING that states anything about bb etfs. And he paid with cash so its not like bb can just charge his credit card. I searched google and everything and really didnt find any info on this. I know companies like wirefly, letstalk etc charge their own etf if you cancel service and don't return the device. Which they even indicate when you go through their application process and is also indicated in their paperwork.
So my question is, am I out of $75? Did I just lose this bet against this fool...lol? If someone have any insight into this, it'll help me out a lot. I'd love to show him some post that bb is going to come after him. So let me know what you all think.

I believe you lost yourself 75 bucks .... as far as I can remember when you purchase an item from a store that authorized to sale the item you are only under contract with the item provider.
Bestbuy typically give you instant rebates at the register because they send their rebates directly to the manufacturers and not the provider. Hence it is no lost to them only the provider who takes the hit

Wow..are you serious. I kinda thought that I may lose the bet because there was nothing mentioned in the paperwork about a bb etf and if it was I didn't find it. ETF
If anything he will get a Sprint etf. It wont show up for a month or 2 as was the case when I switched From At&t. Best buy is in the cell phone business, not the carrier business which subsidizes the cost of the phone so they cannot charge an etf
Clarify the bet with him because I'm sure Sprint didn't give him a hassle about canceling but he will get a separate bill from Sprint for the remainder of his contract. Around $200 for early cancellation.
You said he paid cash. did he pay the whole amount or contract price, and did he cancel in the first 30 days? Not sure if BB does does the same but the store I got mine from told me if I canceled without returning the phone they would charge me an additional $250 for it.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Not sure how Best Buy works, but I know that where I work, if you sign a contract and cancel, and DON'T bring the phone back to us, we charge a portion of the total cost.. I can't remember the amount, but that's how we do it..
Well what he did was call sprint and cancelled the service. Sprint didn't hassle him because he's well within his 30 days so they cancelled it with no questions asked. They said that he wouldn't be charge any SPRINT etf. However, he will have to pay for what he used prior to cancelling the service.
I am over his house watching the football game right now and had a chance to look at the paperwork again. And I just don't see anything that indicates a bb etf. Everything I see is in regards to sprint etf, that's it. I just thought that bb is like wirefly and letstalk. That is you have to return the device within a certain time frame if you cancel service or you'll be charged their etf. But I'm starting to think that's not the case.
Plus when I bought the Nexus S and tried to cancel my service with T-mobile, I tried to cancel my service like 3 days after I got the phone and I had to go to bb so that they can give tmobile some code that informs them that I returned the device. Sprint doesn't have a system like that. Which I know because I bought an Epic from Radioshack like 2 months ago and I returned it like 2 weeks later. However, before I took it back to radioshack, I called sprint to cancel the line that the Epic was on and they cancelled it with no questions asked again. Radioshack gave me my money back and I went to Sprint and bought me a brand new Evo for full price, I believe $500.
Oh well, I'll be paying $75 this Friday. thanks everyone for all your responses.

He paid contract price. But even if they told him about a possible bb etf if he were to cancel service and not return the device, its not indicated anywhere in the paperwork. They gave him copies of everything he signed and and not one indicates a bb etf.

This is an interesting scenario, especially if the device was paid for by cash.
Although the receipt has his sprint info, I don't think BB can go after sprint to collect anything, as they are an authorized third party seller in this case.
Now, there is this clause on the receipt under SERVICE AND SERVICE OPTIONS
....Thank you for purchasing your sprint phone and service at Best Buy. If you wish to change or cancel your Service please return with your phone to a best buy store.
As stated previously, BB is not in the carrier business, they are merely a third party reseller of sprint products. Also, nowhere on the receipt is anything else stipulated regarding cancellation of service and potential fees that may be charged [by best buy].
So, this may very well fall through the cracks.
Btw, some other resellers such as amazon and wirefly do have clauses that say if you cancel service within 180 days, you will be charged additional etf's outside of what the carrier may charge you.
ymmv.
Subscribed! <popcorn emoticon>
I believe Sprint will send a bill, and if he does not pay they will lock the ESN.
I can't speak for Best Buy since I've never worked there but I know Radioshack (and CompUSA before they went out of business) charge their own etfs if the service was cancelled within 90 days without the device being returned. At CompUSA you would get a separate paper contract about this additional etf. At Radioshack you get an electronic contract that shows up on the Verifone credit card device that requires the customer to read and sign that mentions this separate etf. I'm not sure if this is also mentioned on the receipt or not, I've never actually read it.

This is something Sprint has recently changed. Anytime a new account (within 30 days) is going to cancelled, the phone must be returned to the original point of purchase, meaning if he purchased it at BB, Sprint will not cancel the service, Best Buy has to contact NSS and have them process the 30-day cancellation. In your particular instance, if someone at Sprint cancelled them, he got lucky. In normal instances, your friend would not be allowed to cancel over the phone, meaning if he kept the phone past 30 days he'd be under contract with Sprint and then your friend would be charged $200 ETF if he chose to cancel or keep receiving Sprint bills until his account was disconnected and sent to collections.
Your friend, was really lucky to have spoken with a new hire that mistakingly cancelled the account (or line).
Hi guys,
This may or may not be news to any of you, but I was able to procure my Atrix from AT&T for $99 (2 year upgrade renewal) after asking them if they'd price-match the costco.com price.
FYI in case anyone is/was going to pay $199.
I work for at&t and I rarely price match. In this case I wouldn't have done it, the cost is too high and I wouldn't make any money if I did the price match.
Just so anyone else knows if they get told no. That's why.

Good to know. It seems like this might be up to the manager's discretion as the sales rep did need his/her's approval.

ATT can never match sales tax!
I got my Atrix at Costco. Costco claims they have "warehouse" price so the sales tax is based on $149 (the Atrix is $99). AT&T's sales tax is based $599. I do not believe they can match that with Costco.
Plus Costco gives you car charger, case and wired earphone for free. It probably would cost $20 to buy them online. Plus you can return it with 30 days and exchange it within 90 days.
I got the Atrix for about $115 with tax two weeks ago. A little drawback is that they are no longer giving good cases anymore. I got two Atrix at same time, and one comes with very good case (selling for $12 on Amazon) and one has really bad case. I went back trying to get the good case. They opened up a few bags and the cases are all the bad ones.

I was shocked when I bought mine at Costco and only had to pay tax on the 149, so nice. Ended up getting a couple of blu-ray's and some other odds and ends for the price I budgeted to get my Atrix. Plus, the guys at my Costco live and breathe smartphones so they know what they're selling (which for some reason is hard to find around here).
If you've got a Costco membership, save some serious scratch and get your Atrix there
Tax on Phone sales is in direct relation to what state you live in
When I lived in nevada a year ago I only paid tax on the sales price of the phones i purchased at at&t stores. As far as i know only California at&t stores make you pay tax on the full retail of the item and even the at&t rep when I bought my wife's last phone said its a california thing. Just thought i would chip in my 2 cents.

Sales tax varies by state.
Here in AZ, the sales tax is on the actual price paid, not the retail value.
I bought mine in an AT&T store on launch day for $149 and only paid tax on the $149 sale price. (9.3% sales tax)
Hi there at&t brother (sister)! Price matching varies far each market, here in mine, we get reamed for price matching, but to the people who upgrade at costco, watch out because a lot of the time they have secondary contacts, as well as unlimited data plan removal. Tread carefully

First of all, I don't like the camera on the phone. It's pretty bad compared to the Captivate I used before. Second, not sure if it's my phones issue, but people have trouble hearing me when I speak. They always say "what?" or "I can barely hear you" it happens with every single call and the phone has the latest update.
I tried three local at&t stores, none of tem price match to costco or even best buy, even after I said the bestbuy is right around the corner and they said I should buy from BB then.

Just buy it from Best Buy and if you return it you won't be charged a restocking fee.
I have had them price match from Walmart not even an I'm not sure I asked then and they said yes but my phone was only a $50 difference from there store plus a store owned by at&t is more likely or they saw 5 phones on my account all with unlimited data and didn't want to lose that much over $50

Camera sucks, can't argue with you there.
As far as the voice quality issue, its a known and widespread problem. I went through 3 phones until I got a working unit that didn't have the voice or flash problem. Google it and look at the Motorola forums thread. Exchanging might get you a working unit.
I will say this: the first two that had the same problem were from the same batch. The third was from a different Costco and a different batch.
Also, Im yet to find anyone who works at a cellphone kiosk who knows more about smartphones than your average XDA user. SPECIALLY at AT&T stores. They are extra retarded in there.

By flash problem are you referring to the dual LED's?? Mine are fine, I did find a thread where people said the LED would flicker and turn off. This voice issue is really bad though!
I've seen two different no commitment costs at two different ATT stores. One was $499 and the other $549. Did they raise the no commitment cost recently. I'm thinking one store forgot to change the label. Has anyone seen it any cheaper besides eBay?
@ one point it was $99.99 at bestbuy with a 2-yr contract. cheapest i know of right now is radio shack for $149.99 with a 2-yr contract.
Off contract the lowest i've seen is bestbuy for 499.99. everywhere else..$549.99
just checked best buy, looks to be 599 now.
I got mine from AT&T for $500
BestBuy had it for $600 (on launch day) when I went to go get it.
Was wondering if u were me should i upgrade to a atrix or stick with the arc?

Some stores are offering case, BT headset, and car charger with Atrix for a slightly higher price. Could be why the difference if one store was and not the other.

I saw yesterday one for 470$ on e-bay, brand new and unused, but without original box package. Cheapest i saw with package was 520$ i think. My father want Atrix, so i am thinking either to give him my Atrix and to get SGS2/HTS Sensation for myself, or to tell him to get another Atrix, hard to decide...
I bought it for 599$ on amazon 2 weeks ago.
just went into an att store and they refused to sell me a atrix at the no commitment cost. ATT is ridiculous. They said they rarely ever sell items at the no contract price and they are no longer allowed. I could have stayed and spoken to a manager and probably gotten the phone but it was not worth the hassel.
At one point online (around release) , AT&T had the phone for no contract price of $268.
Check authorized agent stores for the no commitment prise. Saw a store that had it for $459 no commitment. As far as 2yr contract the cheapest I have seen in person is Walmart for $118.

Was probably an AT&T Auth. Retailer. They don't make any money when you buy it full retail and would rather keep it around for a sale they can make money on.

Purchased at ATT corporate store for 499.
If you live in the los angeles area and check craigslist they go for around $400 used and $450 brand new. LA Craigslist is always filled with postings because so many people live in la.
Bestbuy, radioshack, sprint store.
I want to know who has the best return policy and will any have them other than sprint stores on launch day?

I haven't heard of any stores that aren't going to have it. All stores should have it. I'm getting it from Sprint cause Best Buy and the others manage to always screw up sownthing. 14 day return policy from Sprint, 30 day from Best Buy. Unsure about radioshack.
Cant wait til Thursday

I'm gonna try to get mine from the local Walmart. If you live in CA, then Walmart is the place to get it from. I just found out that Walmart only charges tax on the sales price of the item. By CA tax laws, we are supposed to pay tax on the full retail price. Just scooped up an iPhone 5 for my wife's Bday today for $205 out the door.
From the Sprint Store, BestBuy etc it would have cost $254. They charge the $199.99 and then sales tax on the $649.99 value of the device. So thats a big savings in my book, as I saved just under $50 this way.

I'm hoping it shows up on Amazon soon. I plan to buy it outright since I'm halfway into contract and don't know how this Softbank deal is going to play out. I'll keep my options open for any future shenanigans....
CA sucks with all those taxes. So glad l live on the border of NH. Live free or die, no sales or state taxes!!!
If you want to buy phones tax free and don't mind waiting a day or so for shipping, this is the best place.

I'll be ordering mine through the Sprint website or call telesales. They seem to be pretty good on shipping. My wife's iphone5 came in two days, when they said that there was a 3 week delay.

I live in Brentwood...Far East Bay. lol
But all Walmarts around do this. I found out a few months ago, when my Mom wanted to get my Pops an upgrade from his iPhone 3Gs. She asked if she had to get it from AT&T and I told her that they can do it at any authorized AT&T reseller. So they were in the local Walmart and my Pops upgraded to an iPhone 4.
My Mom called me later, since she was confused about the price she was charged. She said she was only charged Tax on the SALE price of the phone, not full RETAIL tax. So I googled it and found lots of others said the same thing. So I was pretty stoked to find this out, since that more than wipes out the $36 Activation Charge Fee. You still come out ahead this way, as I would have paid $253, plus $36 activation on my bill. I ended up paying $205, plus $36 activation fee.
I called 5 Walmarts in our county and no one had any iPhone 5's. So I called Tracy Walmart, which is only 30mins from me. He had one iPhone 5 in stock and they charge $189.99 for it, so off we went. The guy was really cool and into Android and we started chatting about the Note 2 during the activation process. He said he was waiting on it (AT&T) and was juiced. He said to give him a call and check back next week, to see if he has em in stock.
PS - They had a Note 1 on display with the other models. So I gotta assume they will also get the Note 2.

Called the Walmart in Mountain View and confirmed that they charge tax on the sale price. Now, can anyone tell me if Walmart will get the Note 2 when it comes out on Thursday??
I'm hoping they will. Like I said earlier, they had a Note 1 on display.

I'm doing Bestbuy. Price match/ return/ exchange within 60 days for me. I get points for purchases as well.
I don't like buying at non-Sprint stores because they tend to screw things up. Happened when I got my EVO 4G from radioshack. Never happened to me at Best Buy cause I worked there and made sure it was done right. That's just me though.

I have that rewards program too. But BB charges full retail tax and they
also inflate their retail prices, so taxes are even higher for CA.

As of today (11/2/2012) Wirefly and Marketplus still don't carry the Note 2... I'm also looking to avoid the CA sales tax. I was quoted $87 just in tax from Sprint telesales.
Any Californian have any success getting around the tax?

From what I hear, 3rd party Sprint retailers should have it around the 9th-11th. That's what I'm waiting for, that and the fact I get paid on the 10th. lol
