Hello,
Update: For solution see my last two posts here.
today I installed the current nightly from here: http://defy.wdscript.fr/defy-cm9/
on my red lens defy (standard, not plus) along with the CM7 kernel.
Before I had CM7.1 on it. Now I cannot connect the phone via USB anymore. Nothing does happen. The settings are all correct (usb debugging enabled etc.).
Could someone recommend a CM9 build for the red lens defy which has working usb mass storage/debug ? I would rather not want to test 100 builds for working usb :S
Thanks in advance!

The USB has been working fine for me with Epsylon3's builds since.. as long as I can remember...
Does it charge via USB? i.e not in the computer?

It does charge via USB on PC and via USB on power adapter. This is not the problem. The problem is, that except charging nothing happens when I connect the phone to the PC. No notification where I could choose portals/mass storage etc.
No hardware popup under windows. On the PC I have Motorola drivers which were working fine with CM 7.1 just before.

Yes it is there.
Should the same usb drivers that worked for 7.1 still work under 9.x?
Edit: I updated the motorola drivers and nothing changed.
Also @pk92:
Which build are you running, maybe USB just doesn't work in the most recent nightlies ?
Edit: Tried 3 nightlies now. Not a single one does work. Tried two different pc's too. Reinstalled motorola drivers on both. I'm clueless.
Edit 2: Also, if I disable USB debug and then reboot, it is enabled again.
Edit 3: I just enabled ADB over network as this is the feature I need the most. I did connect via ADB while the phone was plugged in to USB and right when it connected via wifi windows popped up a hardware dialog along the lines "Unknown device, installation failed."
Edit 19638746278: After reinstalling the motorola drivers once again and reflashing the latest nightly the phone does not even charge anymore via PC USB. Instead, I just get the hardware popup with "unknown device" which reports that it's "not working".
I wonder about the suspicious timing and also I wonder why it says "usb device not recognized" (freely translated from german)

I have the same issue - USB is dead (expect for charging)...
BUT: It worked yesterday evening and today morning, no idea what went wrong...
Same problem here.
All of the sudden it tries to install an MTP USB Device.
Which fails here.
For everyone with a RED LENSE defy (DON'T TRY WITH GREEN), here is a workaround:
Install the latest nightly for Defy PLUS along with the CM9 Kernel and reset battery stats. Nothing changes except USB does work again (at least for me).
Edit: see next post for MTP fix.
New post for clarity:
You then can fix the USB mass storage / MTP by following the instructions of the first post here:

THANK YOU!!! I've been waiting for someone else to have the same problem!!! I'm relieved it's not just mine. I'm assuming you did a manual install also? Is yours rooted? One person suggested ClockworkMod but I'm a little nervous about rooting. I've been doing the manual installs but that's as for as I wanna go. I can't stand the idea of bricking my phone.
My phone is new out of the box!
I found that on two Windows XP machines USB storage doesn't work. I then plugged it into a Win7 box and it worked perfectly. I also used a different cable with the Win7. Try a different cable and try Win7.

I have Windows XP on my work PC and Windows 7 Premium 64 on my home notebook and the USB worked fine on 2.3.3. Every since I did the manual install of 2.3.4 the USB functionality is gone. I'm thinking maybe the ROM is used wasn't incomplete. It's beginning to look like the only way to fix this is to root my phone
FWIW I did the manual update (full rom) and USB storage works fine on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 box.

Yeah, I'm thinking maybe the one I installed wasn't the full ROM. As soon as I see people saying it works great I go ahead and use it. Do you know of any possible fixes without rooting?
No first hand experience, but would it be possible to download the full rom and manually flash it again?

Trying to figure that out. I've been told try ClockworkMod and go back to 2.3 but I'm trying to do it without rooting.
Try a different USB port
If the update was incomplete, the update would have failed the signature check. The first time I connected my Nexus S after manually patching to 2.3.4, Windows 7 Professional X64 did not detect it when connected. I unplugged it and used a different USB port and it worked. I then tried the original port and it also worked. I would try a different USB port and a scan in Device Manager before changing the ROM.

I also have Windows 7 Prof. 64 bit, but switching to different ports didn't work. It won't install the drivers. What else could that mean if it isn't the ROM?
I had this problem immediately after flashing CWM.
I booted into the ROM, then, while the USB was plugged in, powered off the device, and turned it back on. It then seems to work everytime I turn on the device, as long as I don't boot into recovery.
Me too
.
I had a the same problem with my SGS.
The trick for me did: disable usb-legacy-support in your motherboard-bios.
Have you tried re-installing USB driver from the latest android SDK?
Kind of strange, it was working great yesterday and today couldn't connect. Right clicked on android_winusb.inf and selected install and it started working again. Not sure what could have changed from one day to the next. But at least I know what to do when it happens again.

Never tried that. Doesn't that involve rooting or unlocking the bootloader? Both of those wipe the USB storage.

Don't have a custom ROM. All I did was manual bootload 2.3.4 on stock Android. The weird thing is when it's plugged in(charging only) and I turn it off, it starts to power down and then freeze. The screen doesn't go black until I pull it out. Then when I plug it back in it automatically powers back on. Basically, I can't seem to plug it in while it's powered off.
I have no idea why but my suddenly works again. Im happy but confused
You shouldn't need any drivers at all for windows XP vista 7 ect. Mounting your SD card, using flash drives... all use the same USB mass storage divice driver built into windows.

Yes, I just tried this. It still doesn't seem to work. It keeps saying my drivers are up to date but it's still not connecting to my USB storage.
Hi
Yesterday I S-Offed my Wildfire and instelled CM7 rom.
But today I wanted to transfer some music to my phone and i couldn't do it.
When i plug USB cable into PC, my phone just charges and can't do anything more because phone doesn't show that it is plugged by USB. Just USB debugging turns on but I can't transfer anything to my phone.
Yesterday it was all OK but I flashed google apps and Jacob's kernel(v4.2). Maybe that is a problem.
I'm waiting for advice
I have a similar problem.
The phone also shows connect via usb option.
But on doing that, the phone does not show up on my pc.
When I go to "Disk Management" in computer management on windows 7, the disk shows up but I can't assign a drive letter to it and hence it is not accesible.
Can any1 help with the problem ?
Forgot to mention.
The problem does not appear when I connect my wildfire to my mac.
It shows up as as a disk drive when mounted.
I had a similar problem after installing CM7 so I got Multi Mount Sd-Card Lite from the market, put the widget on homescreen and click it each time i mounted my usb.
Hope it solves your problem!

Don't flash Jacob's Kernel v4.2. Keep the stock one.
Thanks for advices
I re-installed CM7 and kept kernel which comes with rom.
Now I have NO problem with that.
So it was kernel problem.
hello,
mi micro USB is not working propperly right now, for some reason it doesn´t charges correctly, it seems a little... "loose"... im currentl running CM 9 2012/05/26
and when it plugg it in the computer and manage it to start charging, it wont allow me to acces it as a mass storage device, in fact the computer wouldn´t recognize it at all!, any help!?
try another cable, or connecting it to other port after rebooting (usb musnt be connected)
Swyped off my Amazing Defy using ICS
happened with me too, got its motherboard replaced
crap... I`m rooted... so no warranty...
maybe in some repair shop of cellphones the will be able to replace it?
but.. did yours charged at all?
bacause mine does charges when appropietly connected... its just that sometimes it wont nad it will not allow me to get to the mass storage...
If your phone just charge but can't access to masive storage, look in the device manager , if you have a MTP device, your micro ubs port is fine, just try to install some stock rom.
it´s just that some times it doesn´t charges and I need to slowly start trying to adjust the micro USB port so it can charge... that´s why I say that it seems to be a little loose...
As well it will only charge when plugged into my XboX 360 or the computer (and some other devices) but not when plugged into the Stock charger... :S

USB not working for flash
Hi everyone, I came with a similar issue.
The massive storage USB connection is not working for me, plus I can't flash a stock rom,
Currently I'm in MIUI for defy (and it's the only option I am able to install), I tried to wipe data cache to install cyanogenmod 7 from recovery but it's not working, it get stuck in the boot logo. I want to install cyanogenmod because it is fast than MIUI jelly bean.
My idea is to flash the device, but with the usb not working Im stuck,
any ideas to solve this? or should i go to have the usb repaired?

If after a boot in bootloader (power+vol-up) and connecting to PC via usb cable nothing appear onto PC display 3 possibilities exist.
1. Usb cable is broken.
2. Pc have no usb driver foryour device (but even in this case a error message appear)
3. Usb connector or circuitry fron Defy is broken.

Yes, is OK your method but is a little dangerous if you not cover the cleaned pins with some resin. More safe is to use a toothbrush soaked in isopropyl alcohol or 98% ethylalcohol to clean the soldered pins.

Hello everyone.
I don't know since when or how, since it has been always working for me on my win7 desktop, but when I tried to connect my phone to a new Latptop (with win8) during the holidays at home, it wouldn't detect it as an MTP device.
Well, it doesn't recognise it at all, unless I put it in debug mode, then it's under unknown devices as "Nexus 4" with a failed driver installation.
But I need to get MTP working to back some things up.
I'm running AOKP's Milestone for 4.3 and franco's kernel 193.
I checked if fastcharge was enabled: No
Switched it on and back off: Nothing
Reflashed the Kernel: Nothing
Reflashed AOKP (including the stock Kernel): Still not recognised
Of course several reboots included. Tried all slots and different cables. The cables tested all work for my N7 on Kitkat.
I had issues before with franco's kernel not really disabling fastcharge when I clicked it but I managed to fix that by rebooting or switching it back on and off again. Also this doesn't really give me any clues as I reflashed AOKP which comes with a different kernel that doesn't even support fast charge..
I'm kind of clueless now, I urgently need to back up things from my phone which I now did via Airdroid, but I also need to get MTP back working for bigger files.
Thank you very much for your help!
It would be nice if someone had a suggestion before I try going back to stock.
turn off driver signature verification(ask google how to do)
install universal naked drivers.
there you go
Will it then only be recognised in debug mode? Or normal as well? Since it doesn't even appear in device manager right now when in regular USB mode

I had this problem. Try deleting all android drivers and MTP drivers from your PC using USBDeview (google it). Also try connecting to a different PC to see if the phone can connect at all. Finally, you may need to unlock the lock screen before attaching. After that it connects no problems!

USBDeview did the trick. Thanks a lot.
And try everything and I can not more . The phone works correctly, but does not detect the pc ( Unknown Device) even if the drivers installed , USB debugging activated and deactivated ... MTP on and off. I think it's time to change mobile.:crying::crying::crying:

Reformat computer or try different computer
Assuming, you have no problem with your USB port, USB cable, installed latest LG USB Driver 4.0.4, running Windows 7 or 10...
We need more detailed info from your part to tackle this problem. Are you running on stock rom, kitkat or lollipop? Are your rooted and do you have TWRP recovery?
Then, you need to disable "USB debugging" from the "Developer options" menu. Then replug your USB cable and you can now select MTP instead of charging only mode. Good luck.

i have fought the no mtp problem and everytime i lost. if you try new things they just dont work. what has worked was to reformat computer then it will work..
I had the same problem with my G2. Unknown usb device, and the error was: "unable to get device descriptor" or something similar. Tried all software solution without success, so i have started to looking for hardware defect. I've changed the usb module, but no success. So, as a last chance, tried another mainboard. And "tadaaaa"... That was the problem. So, start to look for a working g2 with cracked screen, as i did.
