OK so hopefully my N1 should get to me tomorrow, and I'm wanting to put a ROM on it (think its just running stock 2.2.1 ATM according to the seller).
I'm quite drawn to MIUI at the minute, because of speed and battery life, and I quite like the hybrid iphone/android look, but I have read some comments that this isn't quite an every day ROM just yet, as it has a few issues and bugs.
The other I keep reading about is CM6 but what is battery life and speed like? Is this a more complete ROM than MIUI or am I better off with the former?
Are there any good ROMs I should consider other than those - I am after something that is fast, reliable, and pretty (the pretty isn't essential but is desirable).
I know I could look for myself, but I figured that opinions from those who've tried different ROMs in anger would be very useful.
It really is a personal preference thing. So try them all, that's the great thing about the N1.
I didn't like miui, too iPhoney, but a very nice rom none the less.
CM6 is the rom I use, very complete and feature packed. Speed is excellent but battery life less than others. But with IntersectRaven's kernel I get pretty good battery life
Enomther rom is another good one, with really good battery life. Evil's sense ports are really good too
But really you have to try them, you will find one you like

Crazy idea, if you're new to Android, how about using the stock ROM for a while? Even if you're not new, using the stock ROM is a good way to gauge if the phone is solid.. If you put $random_rom on it and you have problems you won't know if it's the phone, the ROM, your apps, etc..

I'm not totally new to android - my girlfriend has an HTC Magic with Cupcake on it, and I've briefly owned an HTC Desire (had a fault) and have had a Galaxy S for the last 4 months (which I'm getting rid of because it's unreliable).... but you do make a good point about the phone, so thanks I may do that, but I'd still like suggestions because I can't see it staying stock for long

+1 for staying stock. Once you find something you want to do but stock won't let you, then it's time to go with custom rom.

MIUI is stable and is my everyday ROM based on speed, battery life and stability. If you don't like the default iPhone looking launcher, just use LauncherPro.
Enothemer's ROM is also very nice.
I thought CM6 was the bomb but realised that Enothemer/MIUI had most of what I needed to tinker with anyways. Battery life was horrid with CM6.

I've yet to find anything the stock ROM can do that Evil's NXSense can't... However, NXSense will do plenty that stock won't.

I'm using v1.15 of Evil's NXSense ROM, and I absolutely love it! It's fairly stable and the battery life is great -- I routinely can go 48 hours with light-moderate use. I'm particularly impressed with Sense, which is so much better than I believed it could be.
The only thing I miss from stock is the unified inbox for email.

Incidentally I've just read about the fact the power button on it WILL break, is it really that flimsy :-o I was under the impression these things were well built?
Anyway thanks for the ideas, I always thought sense on the htc desire was pretty nice, is this evil d rom better than that?
Might have to get myself swype as I'm quite used to it on the sgs now.

Please don't make it look like MIUI comes from Enom, kthx.
Run the stock rom long enough to learn what it is, otherwise you dont know what you had to start with and wont know what you gained or lost. Its good to keep in mind that most roms will only partly meet your needs and will likely have something in them you dont want where you might actually prefer the stock version over whatever was added. You wont know that if you dont fiddle with stock long enough to see what it brings to the table. If you are relatively new to flashing roms consider a conservative stability first rom like enom to start out.
MIUI is what i'm currently using and i'm really digging it
it's got good battery life and an overall good experience
highly reccomend to use it with launcher pro though, as the iphone look is very ugly/cluttered IMO
if i were you though i'd hold off on MIUI since it does have a few bugs and since you're just getting the phone tomorrow it'd be kinda hard to distinguish if the problem was with your phone or the rom,
on that note, staying stock for a couple days wouldn't hurt but if you're anything like most of us here you're probably eager to get some custom roms on there
anyway i digress, enom's got the best battery life hands down and there's plenty of tweaks and customizations (although not as many as cyanogen's of course) and it's an extremely stable and dependable rom. for me it's kinda like my "go-to rom"
as for cyan's rom, it's a nice rom with an myriad of tweaks and options but i've always had battery life issues with it.
evil's nxsense is also a sweet rom if you're into sense and battery life/stability isn't too bad on it.
actually, any way you slice it, you're gonna have a great rom on your phone! so i say try 'em all and have fun haha
Hi, I'm a noob here in the Note. I've been a heavy user and a quite massive flasher of my SGS2.
I'm expecting my Note tomorrow and I'm very frightened in advance by its battery life. So I'm thinking of rooting instantaneously as I open its box but I need your advice.
Should I just root it with the CFroot and leave the stock Samsung touchwiz or should I flash any ROM with good battery results? If so, please I need a small amount of opinions. Which one is the most reliable? Do the latest ICS betas have the same battery drain as the latest GBs? Should I go ICS to start enjoying the Note experience or stay in a GB rom?
Please help me to grasp the state of things in the Note world as I open the box.
Right now I'm using a custom ROM, Darky ROM to be exact and I'm really pleased. This one seems to work best overall for me (along with the latest franco kernel).
Most people however have reported great performance with using the latest Abyss kernel and Rocket ROM. Those for me, weirdly were slower and Abyss got me battery drain.
However, my experience differs from that of most users out there, so basically you should probably try them yourself at first and see which one suits you better.

Checkrom got me the best battery life so far, mainly it is a lite rom.
Hope its not placebo!

At the moment I'm using Rocket Rom together with the Speed Kernel which, with a few tweaks here and there, gives me awesome battery life while using and in standby.
Lite Roms have most of the Samsung and some other stuff removed. As a rule, they are more battery efficient. The best ones IMO are Cassie's XtraLite and Chrak's Small Rom. Of course, removed apps that you need can be added back in both of these Roms.
I used both with Franco's kernels, and they were fast, smooth and easy on the battery.
As for ICS, my advice would be to stay out of it for the time being. You have things to learn before being able to cope with the necessary high maintenance and fixing the ICS Roms require ATM.

I had the same issues with Battery life of SGN. Then I rooted with Franco Kernel 2.6.35.7 & have almost increased my Battery life by 30%
So try it & if you find bettter ROM, pl do share

I am currently on BOCA MSI (v9) which is giving me the best battery life I have ever had on GB (Better than Stock or Overcome and a few others I tried). Even verclocked at 1.4 Ghz
Now I am dreaming to switch to ICS... Obviously the first ROMs out were not really optimized for battery life, and battery life seemed terrible. But I wonder where the present ROMs stand and how hey compare to each other
I don't mind too much having a bit less performance than with BOCA (which is amazing), however I would just hate having a shorter battery life
Anybody can share their experience with AOKP and CM9? With which kernel ?
(Just anticipating some flames: obviously I could try them but I'd love to leverage on the forum and people's experience before making the jump to MTD partitions and wipe my whole install)

Every phone is used differently so its hard to compare ROMs. Try it yourself. Make a backup and flash some ROMs and see which one suits you best.

2. Even if every phone is used differently you still get valuable information from people trying 2 ROMs and coming with their own feeling about which one gives them better battery life

No it isnt and if you had bothered to search you would know tha these type of "best rom" thread are frowned upon for many reasons, The most obvious being that "best" is subjective and also depends on your specific hardware as power consumption is different from device to device. It also depends on software and configuration you use.
If you want the answer to this question then dont ask here, instead try some roms and find what is "best" for you not us.

Hi guys we have loads of Roms for our nexus 4 and i am fairly new to this device and dont know whats best to go for.
My question is..I am wanting a rom that's close to stock but modded for better battery and i dont need it all flashy if that makes sense..
I have had a good look through the threads choose and running purity at the moment and its a nice rom but battery is not great and i do not have a good mobile signal yet my signal is well strong on other devices in the same place.? (my house) three network UK
any pointers?

theres no best rom, only the best rom thats good for you. try out a bunch, find what you and your device likes. also, if looking for battery life, try out a bunch of different kernels. eventually youll find the combination thats perfect for you.

Sabermod by @sparksco is amazing. Close to stock with just the right amount of tweaks. No useless features or mods. I like minimal Roms, im not a big fan of sacrificing performance and stability for useless features. Its compiled with linaro toolchain so its very fast, and battery life is amazing as well ( i get 5.5 hours screen on time, and 2 days of moderate to heavy use. Just idling the phone will last 5 days). Comes bundled with a really good kernel as well. Give it a try.

For the biggest gain in batterylife you could try flashing a custom kernel and possibly underclock or undervolt it, this also decreases heating. The radio is responsible for mobile connections. You could try flashing a different radio to improve the signal from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227. Myself i`am running stock 4.2.2 rom and Franco kernel and am very happy with it. there are other kernels that are also very good. Best is to try them out yourself.

I think Franco is great for both performance and batterylife and off course color and sound control. But thats my preference, other users like other kernels better.
Each Rom will react differently on each device. The only way to find out what works best for you is to try them out on your own.

Depends on your usage. If U want a even better performance is ElementalX a good one. Easy flashing process with AROMA options (ability to overclock)!
No such thing as best, just flash a few and see what you feel brings you the best performance
Hi, i am in the same case of you, i have flashed "simpleGX 1.11 kernel" to have performance and a really good battery life. And yes, it is very smooth and i stay 3 days with my battery charge..! for me it is a very good kernel for the moment. i think to try blue spark kernel but for the moment i am happy with SimpleGX kernel...

Blu Spark is designed for performance. Boeffla for stability and Franco to extend battery life. Usually kernels are designed to provide something different than the stock kernel and the description at the top of the thread for the kernel should give you an idea of what the dev was trying to do. I honestly wouldn't recommend ElementalEx. It's a very vanilla kernel that is available for almost every device but they don't do much to optimize the kernel for individual phones. I use Blu Spark. Personally I think you are better off with kernels that are made for stock OOS.

I did unlock/root/flash roms on 30-35 devices, for friends/family and myself.
And even if XDA members do not like ''best rom/kernel'' threads, its very usefull for a quick search, because i.e. my friend want simply a stable rom and I don't want to test every roms or read the thread's 200 pages.
Wihout pointing the ''best rom/kernel'' you might maybe help by pointing the cons and pros .

After reading the Franco XDA interview, he was pointing the fact that there's not much work to do on kernel in general, because they are out-of-the box already good.
My first device was a desireZ, with froyo 2.2, back in the days, kernel works was badass, and make huge changes to the devices, but now, I agree that there's not much difference, at least for now, since this OP5 is crazy fast.
I do use Franco kernel, as per Franco's thread, he's stating better battery life. well, hard to tell , since he won't achieve 125% better battery life... It might go around 10%. Which is good, but hard to tell on day to day usage, since 10% is about my usgae precision time if I compare all my usage over each days.
So far so good, no cons.

Worst answer ever? I'll admit I could have shared my setup for OP to try as well, but other than that, "worst answer ever" is a bit dramatic.
XDA members don't like the "best ROM/Kernel" threads because of my original point, there really isn't a 'best', it is subjective to your needs/usage. A kernel I find to be an absolute beast in performance can end up being mediocre at best to you. And again, that all boils down to each user's unique usage.
Telling a user what works best for you isn't going to be as good as the user trying it out for themselves; getting that first-hand experience with a certain kernel will give that user a much better idea, and that's why I said flash a few and see what they like best (no need to flash every single one or read through 200 pages...).
Like I said, I admit I could have shared my ROM/Kernel combo originally to give OP a starting point, but that doesn't take away from my main point(s).
Anyway, I don't mean to get into a whole debate about this with you, a handful of users have already responded and hopefully OP has found a kernel they prefer.
For what it's worth, I've used both Lightning and Blu_Spark, both have provided me with excellent performance and battery life (On PureFusion).
