Hey guys, I am new to the Android scene from iOS jailbreaking, so I had a few questions.
1. Is it easy to upgrade to a later firmware rooted?
2. How/can you revert to stock OS from a rom without losing personal data?
3. What are the best tweaks and themes to get?
Thanks for the help!

1. yes. If the ROM is the correct version for a new radio update, just flash it. If it's a new version of the ROM, just flash it, or clear the dalvik-cache before you flash it.
2. nandroid or titanium backup pro.
3. root, busybox, tablet ui. As for themes, it's a matter of preference. Same as launcher, plenty to choose from, ADW, Zeam, Trebuchet, stock.
Welcome aboard, hope you do some great stuff for the community. :highfive:

How do you flash the rom? Dalvik-cache? Sorry the difference between this and the iOS community is ridiculous. Thanks a lot for the help!

You'll have to do an initial flashing of the recovery, see for example
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1741395
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742919
(More will probably come out once the device actually does)
After that, ROMs, kernels, etc can be downloaded as .zip files and flashed via the recovery. More tutorials about this, including video, will also come out.
Some guy named zedomax is notorious for having fifty instruction websites, like galaxynexusroot.com, rootgalaxynote.com, etc. You can watch them for earlier examples, and he's promised a nexus7root.com or something like that.

So the one click root and other tools actually flash to the device?
Noob once again, but do the roms come with a custom flasher sort of thing, or is there a standard way to flash kernels and roms regardless of what they are?
I'm so stupid

My advice: read all you can about root, custom Roms, recovery, and about the android is.
Do not root until you know what you are doing. And using a one click root program does not constitute knowing. By doing this you will learn all you need to know to have fun.

"Flashing" is kinda a vague term. It pretty much means "copy stuff into the read-only part of your device's memory". So you might, for example, flash a ROM or an app.
After unlocking the bootloader, the initial flashing of the recovery has to be done via computer, usually via adb push. Some one-click tools do that for you.
Once that's done, you can flash zip files using the recovery. This is the standard way of flashing stuff and is very easy once you get the hang of it; all you need is the zip file.
Finally, a "rooted" app with superuser privileges can also write to the read-only memory, so there are some apps that flash certain ROMs and kernels for you and all you have to do is restart. Most prominent are ROM manager and kernel control apps.

It's a collection of basic linux programs, required for some other advanced apps. Chances are if you don't know what it is, you don't need it. However, there's also the offchance that an app does need it and forgets to tell you, so meh.
Rooting/Flashing custom roms is an entirely different world from "jailbreaking" in iOS. XDA is by far the best place to learn and get your feet wet, but don't get in over your head too fast. When you get it, ENJOY your device as it is first. A stock Android device offers 100000X more freedom than iOS.
It took me a month (after devs bypassed the bootloader) to get the courage to finally root my G2, and that was because it took T-Mobile an insane amount of time to upgrade this thing to Gingerbread. Before you do anything read. Then read it again. Then again. Once you get the hang of it though, it gets pretty fun.

Yes. I didn't read enough way back when I rooted and messed with my Cappy, and somehow got it stuck in an endless boot loop of death. So I will be a little hesitant to do anything with the Nexus until I am absolutely sure of whatever I'm doing. I suggest you do the same!

As we know, now we have a clockworkmod port for our Desire HD. It is fully functional and working. It is an awesome thing to be able to flash a custom rom and kernels onto our device.
but the question is, will there be a one click solution or a simpler way to have a custom recovery without downgrading to ENG hboot like now is required to push a custom recovery onto our device..
- will Desire HD have a total ROM Manager support as in just install clockworkmod recovery via ROM Manager like HTC Desire and others?
- or will there be something like Unrevoked where its a one click of having a total free custom recovery onto our device..
the issue is, not everyone is smart enough to perform the risky hboot downgrade and pushing clockwork manually.. a simpler solution would be very handy. This is so that newcommers could just root via Visionary perma root and then sorta like download rom manager via market and then just install CWM without downgrading hboot
Thanks for your answers
I doubt it very much....maybe rom manager will recognised the
DHD from default.
A clockwork app mmm usful..
But again I cant see it..
Root
S 0FF
Android SDK
Fastboot/adb shell
Clockwork
Thats the way I went...I do agree that an easier method would help the newbies..
What is needed is an all in one app - Now that would be fun to build..
I think the Devs are far to busy with custom roms and kernels hahaha
Not as Im complaining...
We'll see...

btw, why does clockwork needs to be pushed rather than like previously a device (htc desire) clockworkmod can be installed via using rom manager directly.. is it that rom manager still dosent support Desire HD?
true indeed, a click by click software that automates like unrevoked would be very handy.. afterall.. not everyone is an advanced user to perform those brick risking methods
I also wish an easyer way was possible as I really want to push a custom Rom and kernal but just a kernal will do for me. Is there any you tube videos that show you step by step to put a kernal on dhd? If not would some1 find the time to do this? This would help newbies like myself to feel more comfortable.

No, permaroot via visionary and titanium backup as removal will work fine without CW, beware though take apps out of your /system folder may cause future OTA upgrades to fail when they try and upgrade apps that are no longer present

this thread is dying
Not ony that, I do recall having read that removing those system apps does not give you free space to use, so there is no big reason why you should do it....
On topic:
I have my DHD now for a couple of weeks.....never had android before....I had overclocked my DHD when kamma released one of his kernels and visionary temp root was available It worked fine.
Now I have been out for 1,5 week and just continued reading again the day before yesterday.
I must say, I do read the topic I am interested in completely, so (almost) every post, just to get a feeling of potential issues or get some idea of what to do, if...
So although I am new to android, the great threats in the developer forum have given me a reasonable understanding of what to do, how to do it, and what risk there is.
With that, I have perm rooted my DHD, got S-off, installed clockwork mod and flashed leedroid's rom on my DHD. All done yesterday and the day before, without problem.
Am now considering if I will OC again of just leave it as is for now....
just read carefully, don;t just take the 1st post in the dev section, but read through the topic to understand potential issues....The topic creator is in now way responsible for you not reading properly or failing to understand the implications.
But Yes, a one click solution would be handy, although I prefer to have it done this way, as I now have a little better understanding of what actually happens, rather than, hey, I flashed this rom ...

For me, I used the 'freeze' option in Titanium rather than uninstalling them. It makes my apps menu tidier, and there must be at least a slight improvement in speed as less stuff is running in the background now.
so guys, do you think anyone will come out with a simpler way to flash custom rom soon?

If you are already rooted, first I recommend install Koush's bootstrap recovery. This allows you to backup/restore your phone. A warning with this if you are new: Don't bounce back and forth between ROM's that are made for different android versions. For example, if you are on 2.2, don't try to apply a ROM for 2.1 as it will brick your phone due to a difference in the bootloader.
After you have installed Koush's bootstrap recovery, IMMEDIATELY make a backup. Then archive this off to your computer for safe keeping. This will be your saving grace if your phone gets messed up a little, and you want to go back to how it was as of right now.
Once you have that installed, you can install ROM manager, as this usually has the most recent releases (for the general public). I recommend that you do some searching on the forums here under Droid X themes and Droid X development and take a look at the threads for the different ROMs/Themes so you can get a feel for what they look like. Often reading through the posts also will help you get a feel, as people will usually provide their feedback.
A note if you are not familiar with flashing Themes/ROMs. This can be dangerous if you don't follow the instructions for each specific theme or ROM.
Sorry if this reply has seemed daunting by any means. I just have run into a few bumps myself as when I started messing around, I didn't know what I needed backups of...
Hope this helps! PM me if you need specific questions answered! Otherwise I'll try to check back
As for the different lock screens... I would look into Widgetlocker. It allows you to create shortcuts on your lock screen and use it a little more than the default lock screen from android.

Usually you want to refer to the original post for the ROM and download the update from there. They will usually have steps to install the update.
Hi. Apparently, my Adam will be shipped in14th of February, but I want to learn a way to have the market before that.
I'm kind a person who doesn't like to flash his device. I want market without a custom ROM.
Is it possible? If it is, please post the solution to here to make this thread a how-to guide for us.
Thanks
All of the custom roms so far just add in the market and root. Adam apple also adds support for connecting to Ad-hoc wifi as well which is very nice.
No matter what, you will have to flash something in order to get root and the market. But no fear, it is a very simple and painless process. I have already done it many times on my adam. Another great thing is the restore files that Notion Ink release, pretty much fixes any bad flash.
you need google services in order to use the Android Market. That's what the whole rooting is all about

Can I return to original ROM without any pain if I don't like the custom ROM?
The easiest way would be to use clockworkmod to make a backup. Then you install whatever you want, if you don't like it, you restore the backup.
However, I will say that there is not much of a "ROM" per say out at the moment. They are all just modifications to the stock Adam build, or enhancements.
Come on guys, enough with the extremely complicated rooting process on the galaxy tab. Where's Unrevoked for the gtab? Or the other mainstream android devices.. There are more acronyms being thrown around in the development forum than needs to be. It's obvious many people don't have a clue what they're talking about.
All of my devices are rooted with some flavor of gingerbread (CM7,SalvageMod) excluding my tablet. I know that posting a whiny thread isn't going to motivate anyone but it may give some perspective.. SuperOneClick is about as close as i've seen it come to the what-should-be one click experience.
This forum is frequented by some of the most brilliant hacker/developers our world has to offer, I'm baffled that the galaxy tab is still a bastard child.

Yeah I should have been more clear.. flashing the right binaries and not going down a one way street with your tablet.. I have root, root is nothing special to the average user.
Rotohammer, technomancer, etc I know they do wonderful work. Technomancer is the very reason CM7 is running on the gtab
Anybody aware of any ROM developers (for any device, curious) that may have actually developed a complete root/rom application for windows/osx/linux? As in, click a button, root, adb push some files, reboot and start the install process?
Thanks!
I think you need to make the distinction between rooting and flashing a ROM or people might be confused by the thread title:
CyanogenMod 7 (CM7), MoDaCo Custom ROM, Rotohammer ROMs...these are all cooked or modified ROMs which can be flashed onto a device to give it (or remove from it) certain features. Root user access can be one of these features.
Rooting is the process of gaining access to the root (Super User) account on the device and thus being able to run applications which would have otherwise been restricted access to certain areas of the filesystem.
So flashing a custom ROM can be synonymous with rooting, but not vice versa.
I feel the same about the tab threads. The discussions, flashing, etc are seem a bit complicated. I am very greatful for all the work that the dev and chefs do, but it is easier to flash CWM and Android to my winmo HD2 than it is to put a custom rom on my tab!!! I have yet to make any mods to the tab othern than rooting because I really dont want to mess things up. I am waiting and hoping this process becomes simpler soon.

The MoDaCo kernel effectively does what you want - gives you CWM in recovery so you can apply update.zip files same as you would on an HD2, with the exception of radio images (as far as I'm aware, though even that should be possible).
Yes, you need to use Odin/Heimdall to flash the modified kernel to begin with, but that isn't exactly much of a hardship.

I have to agree. I thought coming over here while being an avid T-Mo Vibrant flasher that this would be a breeze. I have been real adamant about doing anything other than root my Tab because there seems to be more of a difference in things than I thought.
I am not one to come in and ask questions when I know the answers are out there, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer. I don't even know if what is already on my Tab is the newest or if I am missing out. I see posts that say "OMG Don't flash this or your Tab will grow arms and beat the sh*t out of you!!!" and I'm like "Huh?!"

Yes, the MoDaCo kernel -- very simple to install -- it will include CWM and convert your filesystem to ext4. Even if you leave it at that, with your stock ROM, the difference is incredible.

Use the kernal by Chainfire on top of Roto JMI. That will give you the CWM3 in one simple step.
You go on to the other kernals if you want to change your format of your internal sd card to the ext4 format instead of the rfs format.

The tab is a very wide distribution, so people of very different backgrounds are on these forums asking many of the same questions. On other forums someone asking a question that was previously answered usually gets disemboweled, but here we have a more patient tone, so instead of thinking before posting, we get way more than our share of "help, I think I melted my precious".
The tab is really just a bigger vibrant. They are 6 months further along than us. In 6 months this thing will make us toast and coffee.

Thanks. How long does it take? Messages has been at zimage for a long time now. Maybe 4 minutes.

So please can anybody help me out? I am in huge need of help!
Thanks in advance!
To help you I need first some information about your tab. First, what android version is installed on your tab? The best backup will be with CWM but then you need root.
Of course you could connect your tab to the PC via USB and copy everything to your HDD. But I think here you need root as well to be able to see the system folders... .

A paradox.
You can't save your current rom in it's native form unless you root. And you can't save it, unless you install a custom recovery. And even then, you're saving a modified OS that if you restore, will be modified. So a paradox.
So if you want to root, and install roms, you'll just have to suck it up like everybody else
Fortunately, lots of methods to revert back to stock in case needed.
So, you either take the plunge, or stay stock.
Not only that but most Big Box stores dont have a clue and rarely look at it anyway ,unless you tell them its something you did (which would void the warranty) . But for me personally I void warranty within a few hours on everything I get , if its electronic they always take it back , I wouldnt worry about it , run a bunch of stress tests for a couple days if the components are sound ,it will complete them no problem , then root away and have fun!
Thank you all!
Thank you all for your replies! I can honestly say, I can happily root my device without a worry now. But I have a couple of things I'd like to ask, for one. What is a cpu ID? Also say for example I rooted my device and want to revert back to the original OS is that possible or not? Here is my current information.
Android Version
3.0.1
Kernel Version
2.6.36.3-00001-gf991e5d
Build number
Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1
That's my current information. IF anybody of you guys call tell me I would like to root my device but with ICS not with Honeycomb since at the moment that's what I currently have. Also I have 2 year warranty.
Cheers! And much appreciation!
First, this is an excellent post about CPUIDs, why you need them, and how to get them posted by dibb_nz ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25429111#post25429111 this will really give some direction on why it's important and how you can get it.
If you want to root an ICS rom I recommend reading this post from Civato on how to upgrade your bootloader to v6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 I recommend the Automated Flashing tools for ease, but the manual version is good if you want to know more about what you're doing on the tablet.
Then pick a ROM, I personally use Flexreaper Extreme, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22964651&postcount=1 but there are several out there to choose from, I recommend putting several on your MicroSD card before you start any portion of the process and that way you have several to choose from, test between them, and don't "over customize" until you make your decision.
Finally, I'll remind to you, as many others will do, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!
Good Luck, and most importantly, have fun!

You freaking rock bro! I have a question, since I already have Honeycomb on my Android by default, would I need to root first before I update it to the newer version of the ICS? OR would I just have to manually update it first and then begin the process of rooting the device? I as well admire Flexreaper Extreme. I also noticed there are special mods for the device to change the skin etc...Would you know where I can get the tutorial on that? I know I'm jumping too much, but I'm too darn excited to do this. Hahaha.
Cheers!

You should be able to start the process by going through the steps in Civato's post on how to change your Bootloader, make sure you have a ROM on the MicroSD before doing this, and then follow the steps to install the ROM you choose.

In the OP for Flexreaper there are discussions about how to install the customizations, Civ wrote a great beginners guide to modding that might help, posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1648162

Sounds like it didn't install cleanly. Double check the checksum, try redownload, wipe everything and reinstall. If that doesn't work make sure that your bootloader and Rom match.

Hi! Thanks for your reply I have successfully rooted my device after hours of research I had to reinstall everything from scratch, unfortunately my build for my tab isn't the same as the the build I had it when I bought it, oh well...So now I have HC 3.0.1
So now I want to flash the device, is that possible? I want to get that ICS look without updating it to the ICS. I was wondering what would you advice me to do? haha, I know I'm asking way too many questions in this single form, I have an excuse for that I'm a noob, hahaha. But seriously your help is very much appreciated!
I will suggest rooting your HC ROM first, then install recovery for example via acer recovery installer. Make a backup then!
After that you can use AFTEROTA to upgrade the bootliader and recovery. When finished install an ICS ROM of your choice. With the help from AFTEROTA you can all ways go back to stock HC version.

[Solved] Thank you every that helped me
Thank you guys for your help and advices! I have successfully updated and rooted, and flashed my device after hours of reading and going through posts, hahaha. Of course I did do a full backup of everything and now I am good to go! Again thanks again guys, much appreciation!
Cheers! Moe Kami!
