My First Impressions with XXLQ5 4.0.4 ROM - Galaxy S II General

As i always say, for noobs, but kids/AOSP lovers or TW haters!
Again, a BIG thanks to sammobile.com for leaking this ROM 24 hours early. Great effort guys.
(I am missing those people who were supposed to pass over them)
• Usually phone calls were of no problem. Sound is solid in both earpiece and speaker.
Noise Reduction feature is back, and i love it. :good:
• Vibration intensity is solid as it was.
• All connectivity works. WiFi, 3G/H+, Bluetooth etc.
• Swype is present as it should and version is 3.26.92Q
• Is it me only or the 1080P mkv files are running smoother than before!! :good:
• TW launcher does have the loop Home screen option, and as well in App drawer.
• Internet Browser- Well it has been changed, all over smoothness is better than previous ROM. Nice. The address loading bar is changed it's color from green to Sky blue and a little bit thicker as well! :good:
• Jeez! Can you guys see an option to Refresh a web page?? I can't!
• Call logs STILL don't categorise numbers! Uff!
• Vibrate option changed it's name to Mute. Lol. And the Vibrate icon is changed in Status bar.
• The icons in Notification bar (Application update, any other notifications etc) is no more big ones but they are small like as they were in GB.
• The Lockscreen notification is changed. Now Missed call and SMS are indicated under two separate circles and their background is transparent, unlike in previous ROM it was Red. :good:
• The scrolling bar is changed. Previously it would appear in a different grid with it the long vertical line and green colored, but now it is well merged, small and doesn't stay on any vertical line. :good:
• The Task Manager writing is now BIG and fills up the whole screen area horizontally. What's the point?
• The settings menu (which appears when you press menu button) is changed. It appears in a white and a little big icon sets. See screenshot.
• As it is mentioned many times before, Contacts in now there under phone dialer. :good:
• There is an option to set battery status to show as percentage in Status bar.
• There is an option to have a little vibrate when a call is connected. :good:
• There is a new option i am noticing, under Display you'd see a 'Help Text' option!
• The font 'Rosemary' is now added under main fonts.
• Connection with desktop is working fine as it always did.
• So far, haven't noticed any specific bugs, or any apps are not opening or something like that.
The OVERALL smoothness and scrolling is good, even with the stock kernel. So it's definitely worth upgrading.
No root yet! So I'll upload a video tomorrow, if a root kernel appears.
Now if I have missed any point which you've found OR misstated anything please reply below.
Regards.

Thanks for taking to write that. Really appreciate it!

I said no root because i didn't root, that's all ! I don't use anything besides Siyah, Hardcore's kernel or CF.

Exactly, that's what I always do until the adequate CF-root is released. Works like a charm.

My exact same sentiments ithehappy. Samsung seems to be doing well with firmware updates now. Hope this good run continues with JB.
I don't see myself going AOSP or custom ROM anytime soon.
Only negative thing I noticed is the removal of the brightness adjustment by the sliding notification area. But I can live without it.

Hi guys. I'm new here, this is my first post to a thread in this gigantic forum actually, but I've been following some threads for quite a while now.
I think it's great 4.0.4 has been released (even if it is not official yet) for the i9100.
I'm very excited to turn to that new FW since I've been having mic issues while on phone calls and since noise reduction was somehow lost in the transition from GB to ICS it was a bit disappointing to have such a great piece of hardware with a faulty software that was preventing using the phone to its full.
By the way @ithehappy, thx very much for sharing your experience here.

Anybody noticed the bugs?
This rom has some bugs.
1. Camera shutter sound works even if the phone is on silent mode.
2. Swiping on the status bar for brightness control doesn't work.
EDIT: Camera sound was due to KOR sales code. Have changed it to XEU. Now it is silent when the phone is silent.

They can be new features, not necessarily bugs.

lOl, you can call them new features.
But they are surely bugs. (especially the focus & shutter sound in silent mode)

So far, following bugs found, Bluetooth not working, camera app not showing preview and corruption of serial number of phone.
Still a bit buggy, especially if needing to use Bluetooth.

bluetooth working perfectly fine with my car, both a2dp and making/receiving calls.
Camera app also working fine for me. Camera shutter is silent if my phone is set on silent too.
i do have the empty serial number but thats not important to me.

Bluetooth was making phone noise, but no volume of caller. Camera app showing black screen, no picture review before taking a picture.
This is still very buggy, other users are also reporting no sound when the phone is in a car dock.

My friend, brightness slider could be disabled by purpose, you never know. Focus&shutter sound - isn't a legal issue involved here? (I've read that it was illegal to silent these sounds completely in some countries )
Anyway I don't want to discuss this any more. So EOT here
About BT - I don't use handsfree and other acc, but file transfer worked like a charm for me today.

No camera sound now when the phone is on silent mode. (Had to change the sales code from KOR to XEU).

camera and bluetooth is working fine with me... all is well...

OTA Annoyances

Not sure whether I'm the only one but there are a few things that really bugging me with the OTA:
1) Auto-brightness now just always keeps me at the lowest brightness. I prefer the auto but not if its going to make my screen always dark.
2) The camera actually seems to take not as good pictures for some reason. Everything looks more washed out, especially in low light cases.
3) The default black background worked with all programs, and the white just doesn't. For example FPSE: when you are picking from a list of roms if the list doesn't go all the way to the bottom then where there are things to pick from its black and below it its white. Titanium Backup has the same thing below the list of schedules. It is frekin ugly and just doesn't look right like it did before.
4) The top bar icons just don't look as nice as the old ones.
5) Talking over the phone everyone sounds quiter and grainer

I've noticed that low light pictures suck now.
I'm not having the same low light picture issues.
Also, if some apps look bad because of the new theme, those app makers should fix their apps. If just one app inherits the new color-schemes, all apps can. Some programmers are not using "best practice" techniques in this case.
For example, they manually set the background color and font color, rather than inherit from the colors from the system. Should be a simple fix for them, if they care.

For those that don't mind using Bluetooth, I highly recommended the Motorola H720.
This headset isn't that expensive, and IMHO it greatly enhances the call quality on ALL of my Android phones.
I'm still on (Bell) Froyo, but the H720 might be worth a shot for anyone disappointed with call quality...

Since upgrading to official Gingerbread, my Gmail icon no longer shows up in the messaging app. Gmail still works, but when I go into messaging all other accounts are listed except my Gmail app account. Gmail was always listed in the messaging app in Froyo. My wife hasn't upgraded yet and Gmail list listed in messaging on her Atrix. Is anyone else having this issue?
Daneren, I agree the new color theme is horrible. The color and symbols on the notification bar really bad.
low light pic sucks!!! Colors seem a little cheap on the menu bar.

This is why I think Motorola should have put the new exposure setting onscreen instead of in the menu settings. That setting makes a huge difference in picture quality, and I have to adjust it way too much for it to be in menu setting.
I am disapointed with a few things also. Low light pics seem effected, I cant tether anymore, my quadrant standard score is 300-800 lower consistantly now, there is an annoying lag when I unlock with the slider, and I prefer the top bar icons with 2.2.2.

If you're rooted wifi tether for root seems to work fine for me.
I'd rather do that than manually dig around sql files and possibly bork something (as per the mod in the dev section).
As a formed N1 user I miss my vanilla android sometimes
To add to that
-home screen seems to be less responsive
- battery indicator inaccurate
Haven't tested a lot. Will take time to test all the options and features.
However the new keyboard seems to be an improvement though.

thx doesn't work, over to winamp.
Would prefer stock (lockscreen features, less bloat/ram)
Car dock became atrocious. You now can only add 4 apps to it, the rest is either close button (two of that), and stupid music player functionalities (music player, internet radio, podcast player) or voice search.
I also have ran into the issue with the battery indicator.

If you are looking for a player that's close to the previous, give PlayerPro a try. (Has trial but not free)
If you want a free player with even less permissions used than Winamp, give Zimly a try.
I currently have both players on my phone...

Annoyances/Bugs in Samsung Jelly Bean (DLH7) update

To be honest, I really love this update. So many new things! Made me feel like I have bought a new phone all over again. But there are a few issues..
1- Grey statusbar. Why Samsung changed it from black? God knows why
2- Background in the toggles panel in "Notification pull-down", [not the color of toggles itself]. It feels so out of place. The color doesn't match Touchwiz color scheme.
3. WiFi has very slow speed, and can't maintain connection. <<< this is the killer bug for me!
4. Browser will force close (FC) when users try to go to bookmark selection.
5. Help app is very weird. The "step-by-step" guide (e.g for WiFi) is pointing to the wrong location. This is maybe caused by the major changes that Samsung has done to the Settings app. If this bug is still present in final release, then many people will complaint, especially the non-technical one. Samsung made that "easy home screen mode" for a reason, to help those new smartphone users. That "Help" app was supposed to go hand-in-hand with the new Home screen mode.
6. Phone will vibrate even though there is nothing happening, no notification whatsoever.
-Possible causes are WiFi error, and apps FC.
7. New widgets (the white one) are great, only that it doesn't match the color scheme of the old widgets.
-Most of old widgets are in black, e.g Music player, FM radio, Mono Audio, Negative colours. The new widgets, e.g Dialer, Favorite apps, Favorite contacts, Favorite settings, Messaging and Simple alarm clock widgets are all in white. Only two of the new widgets retain the black color scheme of the old widgets, which are the "turn off all sounds" and the "smart switch" widgets.
8. AC charging is very slow, did not test USB charging but some users said it's slow too.
9. Battery draining.
-This might be caused by mediascanner that's constantly running in background, and scanning without stopping.
-Other possible cause is the random vibration bug (point #6) which makes the phone awake so often.
10. Touchwiz is very unstable.
-Sometimes, folder will not close and stays on every homescreen I go (sorta like Pop Up Play).
-Seldomly, app shortcut (or icon or whatever you want to call it) will be replaced with an invisible icon that takes up space. Touchwiz will FC if I try to put an app shortcut to that empty space.
I might add more when I found it, I'm using Omega v16.1. Hopefully this post will help someone, especially those who want to upgrade but can't make up their mind whether they should or not, and not to forget Samsung development team (damn you cunning bastards, LOL!) :silly:

Relax, man. I labeled this thread with very specific title, to discuss bugs in Samsung DLH7 update. The fact that I mentioned "bugs" means I know the rom is still not an official rom, that is leaked to public. You gained nothing by being a prick in the online world.

Since its a beta, bugs are expected. However, I feel that LH4 and LH6 were much better than LH7. LH7 is bit slower and ram leaks. Also I don't like that why voice commands are merged into s-voice again.
Not got an opinion on leaked test roms that are not the final build .

i think the random vibrations seem to be events like wifi connecting and disconnecting. it took me a while to figure that out.
also seems to be a bug with the gmail notifications. when you collapse the notification it shows the text as partially is cut off instead. not quite sure how to explain it. but it was working properly in LH6.
they are either changing a lot of things and testing, or they keep doing things which ends up breaking something else.

[Q] Phone behaviour after am incoming call ended / while playing music on headphones

Dear All,
I've been using android for a long time, also wrote few apps, nothing huge tho.
I recently swapped my beloved SGSII for Nexus 4 ... and one thing drives me nuts!
Its phone behaviour after incoming call ends. Why the hell Im being kicked back into phone activity, while it was not the place I've been before the call? Its irrational... And drives me crazy
Im doing something on my phone (lets say - gaming), and someone calls. I answer, we chat for a while. Call ends. Where am I redirected to?
THE DAMN PHONE DIALER! dafuq?....
Hah, but there is more (definitely some more of this, I'll go mad, and they will lock me up ,) ) - imagine what happens when you ride your bike, listen to music and then answer a call .)
Yes, you guessed right! Im being redirected back to phone activity WITH SCREEN UNLOCKED, even if it was locked and turned off before the call.
Thats what actually pushed me to write this topic - I called my coworker by mistake because of this today.
And here comes the big question:
Does anyone knows a ROM or modified phone.apk which would have this fixed/changed/worked around? I just want to get back to where I was before after a call ends....
Yep. AOKP ROM dialer has an option for that.
Screenie: http://db.tt/IYqEL2wJ
I'm on edge network right now so I can't up the apk... You can probably help yourself

Does every AOKP based rom has it? It looks like this might be just kind of ROM I'm looking for .)
Few more questions then:
1. Does it have option to show battery % in notification bar?
2. Option to show toggles (Wifi, bt, data,...) in notification bar? (like in cyanogen)

Yeah everything based on AOKP should have it.
1. Yes. In 3 different styles
2. Yes but the implementation differs a bit from cm. The 'tile' type of toggles become hidden once you've enabled the 'power toggles' in notification bar.
Try the latest milestone. It's epic.

I hate this "feature" too! Any ideas how to correct it on the stock 4.3 ROM? I'm rooted with custom recovery and franco kernel. Don't wanna flash a whole new rom just to fix this one issue though.
Maybe flashing the AOKP or CM10 dialer apk would dod the trick?

Actually, lockscreen widget and lowered sound volume (as well as toggles in the notification panel) were part of the 4.2 already.
Camerafix is also a very doubtful topic.
Android 4.3 in HTC One incarnation doesn't bring that much to the table, sure always better to have the newest one if possible. But nothing to go crazy about.
Lowered sound volume? That better not be part of the update. That will ruin a good thing IMO

Actually, lockscreen widget and lowered sound volume (as well as toggles in the notification panel) were part of the 4.2 already.

I think from those in the states that hot left behind with 4.1.2 jumping to 4.3 is a big upgrade .

Well, there's the TRIM thing that Google finally implemented. Will help stop the phone from becoming slow over time.

you can always turn down the volume as it is now.. if they permanently lower the volume they're just hand holding the people who don't have any common sense..
From 4.1.2 to 4.3, I've noted:
-Long press Home for menu (no more 3 dot bar at the bottom), swipe up from Home for Google Now (enabled in Display, Gestures and Buttons)
-Quick Settings in Notification
-Autobrightness is better balanced (IMO, but definitely changed)
-Notification vibration pulses longer than before
-Camera shutter seems faster
-Better integration of features in Notification. For example, phone call notification has call back and text options.
-Google hangouts message preview in Notification.
-Better battery life, I would say about 15% based on how much juice I now have left at the end of the day.
Others?

Here are a few minor ones I picked up after the update (in addition to what you contributed).
-Soft buttons fade in and fade out
-TV App updated (so much better imo, but missing still missing some basic intuitive tasks [you can't delete a room..?])
-Power Saver quick toggle removed from notification swipedown
-Can show battery % level after enabling it from settings
-Headphone output decreased (I swear, it used to be louder at max settings)
Those are pretty much what i picked up in addition to what was mentioned above.

Also, you now have to turn the TV app off in Notifications. Used to be able to back out if using the Back button.
I wish they made the battery percentage a new battery icon instead of an additional item in the notification tray.
I've actually noticed a better battery life too
I'm starting to prefer sense over stock for some strange reason aswell

Would not call it a feature, but there is a new icon in the notification bar when NFC is turned on. Kinda annoying.
Telus for those on TT that can't easily read signatures.

I noticed you wrote "Power Saver quick toggle removed from notification swipedown". How do you do that without disabling power saver mode?

I think he's referring to the annoying space it takes up in the notification shade
I've posted about this as its now baked in and you can disable the notification in the apps option and still have power saver running

Don't understand how people can complain about too loud sound having an option to turn it down?

Because the lowest volume setting is still too loud. So it's left between obnoxiously loud, really loud, loud and mute.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
it is a fine and quick device. But after using a custom rom on my z3 compact, i am just missing a few things that i find essential.
1) missing the data traffic monitor 2)missing the option to switch recents and back buttons.
3) missing the 2 extra buttons on the navigation bar.
(yes, they are from gravity box in xposed module)
the standard file explorer is also very bad. it always goes to download map standard, when you want to move or copy a file.
and it has facebook, avg and amazon apps that you can't delete and facebook even has an facebook app manager app that doesn't show up and you need to disable it through the apps menu.

but system ui tuner is there? did you try pressing and holding the settings gear icon in the status bar to see if the system ui tuner appears? tia!
Well that is something new to me. Didn't know that system ui tuner was actually an option. Made the wrong assumption that you meant changing things through the normal menu's. System ui tuner only has options for do not disturb and status bar. No navigation bar . I do have to say that I just updated the software today to a version with the security patches from 1 April.

thanks for the answer, what a pity! so we will probably have to wait for root also to be able to re-arrange navbar buttons :crying: or maybe that is also possible via adb and someone comes out with a solution earlier? :fingers-crossed: what do you think master @serajr?
ps. my z2c should be delivered in a couple of days maximum from now! :victory:
@Dxue I know you will be loving me..!
I could swap navbar buttons! :victory::victory:
just used this app info who pointed me there was found here!! :good::good:
ps. that app is simply great! apart from swapping the back and recent buttons, I could also add two extra buttons (one for showing the volume panel so I can avoid pressing the hw buttons for doing that, and one for expanding the notification panel) see screen!

that is a great app! thanks for the heads up:good:.
after reading it, i suddenly remembered reading this last year too! I just never took the time to actually remember it, because i used xposed to do all that and felt it was an unnecessary app. UNTIL NOW! hahaha.
btw, i like the theme/icon pack that you are using. mind telling me where you got that from?

taz icon theme from the store, very nice I like it, and particular compared to all others I tried
newbee, but love it
hello, all
i'm newbee in android phone
but i love this phone for basic (but importants) points
- good autonomie
- compact size
- good apn
- a full 5" screen in a small formfactor
So far I really like this device. It's my smallest device yet and I love it. Performance is great and battery life is outstanding. Low light performance with the stock camera app is my only gripe as it seems to add artifacts. Hoping gcam will be available before too long. Decent case selection especially when compared to the Essential.
