I have 3G internet router/receiver in one of the rooms of my house, which has the best 3G reception. There is WIFI router in my living room. I have in-wall cables with ethernet sockets in every room, and all cables come into on "routing box" where I can use patch cables or powered switch to route and share internet connection. So 3G router in one room is connected with WIFI router in another room by a help of a patch cable.
1 week ago I noticed that there is no WIFI connection. I tried lots of things untill I found out that if i unplug the cable from the WIFI router and plug it into my laptop, the LED of the ethernet socket is blinking red, meaning there is no internet connection. If i plug the cable directly into 3G router, the internet is fine. I replaced 4 patch cables and the result was the same, no internet. Then I tried to use my WIFI router in between of the two rooms routing, just one cable went into Internet IN and another went out of Ethernet out (there are 4 of these). This way the LED of the ethernet socket was blinking green and the internet was fine.
Could anyone explain me what's wrong with my ethernet cables? Or what else could it be? Why all of a sudden perfect connection stopped working while none of the cables were cut off? Is there signal degradation and WIFI router works like signal amplificator? I am a no networking specialist. Please help me to find an answer so I would know what to do.
Thanks

On the road right now. Give me a couple hours for travel. Will summarize what i understand works and does not work for you. We can then try a couple things to isolate the issue.

OK. Tell me what you've tried and works, as well as what you've tried and fails.
You've plugged your laptop into your 3G router and you can get to the internet.
You've connected your WiFi router to your 3G router by physically moving it next to your 3G router. You've then tested your laptop, connected wirelessly to the WiFi and via ethernet to your WiFi router and in both cases they work (assuming your WiFi router has ethernet ports.
If everything above is correct and functional, then yes - the problem is your wiring and/or hub/switch that connects all of your cabling.
Put your WiFi router back where it belongs. Patch your 3G directly to your WiFi and test again. You've eliminated everything but the wires. Does it work? If so, then it should be your hub/switch. Doesn't work? Patch your laptop to the 3G at the patch panel. Does it work? If not, then it's your connectors and/or cabling between the 3G router and your patch panel.
Hung any pictures lately where a nail could have penetrated a cable? What's changed?
Eliminate as much a possible at first and then add as little as possible and you will find the problem.
OK, i tried wiring my own LAN cables to try things out. What i found is that one part of the problem was that i needed to use one crossed patch cable, straight one had no signal at all if used.
The other part of the problem was that when i tried all combinations, the cable that was plugged into laptop was showing binking red. But my 3G router was showing that there was connection. Apparently the sites were loading in browser, but very slowly. But when i tried testing with speedtest.net, it couldn't pass ping test...
So, i think it could be the bad/crossed wiring in one of the wall cables and it is impossible to test and find exact answer without a tester. So I have ordered a good LAN tester that is capable to detect bad wiring so i will know what custom cable i could make. It should arrive in a week or so.
Thanks for your time and help
Confused here. You said it was working up to two weeks ago. Unless you replaced the ends, you can't go from not needing a crossover to needing one. I don't know what kind of gear you have, but some equipment allows you to change the port configuration so that you do or don't need a crossover. Usually this is at the hub/switch level. I've never heard of consumer equipment requiring a crossover. Are you sure you haven't made any config changes to your 3G router, WiFi router, hub/switch, or even laptop?
I don't know that I helped, but I'm glad you found a solution that works. Cheers!
I didn't make any changes on routers ends, but there was one day when there was no electicity for like few minutes. You think it could make some harm to routers settings?
Assuming power loss outside your control then there could have been a spike either before loss of power or when power restored. Not likely reset but it can't hurt to check. What OS are you running on laptop? Have you tried deleting your wireless config on laptop and recreating?
Everything is a process of elimination. Asking questions since I get the impression you still have a problem.

Yes i still have a problem, and both the routers work fine when they are close to each other connected with a short patch cable without using wall cables. I revised all settings on them and didn't find anything that could be wrong.
So, i think i gave up for a week or so, till i get the cable tester which will be able to show me the truth about wiring of wall cables
Very strange it's the cable but it sure looks that way. Please let me know how it ends up - you've got me hooked.

Hey Reilly1812,
I have news, I tested the cables and there's a problem in one wall cable.
The tester I was using was testing all fibers in a cable one by one and I found that the fibers 2 and 5 are looped/connected together, as if testing fiber 2 it shows 2 and 5 active in tester, when I was testing 5th fiber again 2 and 5 was active...
Is it possible to get 100% OK internet over these cables and how, if yes?
Thanks
Not all pairs are used, but I can't tell you which ones. Unless someone driving nails/drilling I would think the cable ends more likely the culprit and I would think about cutting off the ends and retesting. cable might actually be ok.

Yes, I See
I have success here. I found info that 4,5,7 and 8 wires are unused. So I crossed 2 with 8 in two patch cables and everything works now
Good to hear. You just need to know what caused the cable failure in the first place so it doesn't happen again.

I as you think that the problem is more likely in one of the in wall sockets. But making custom patch cables seemed an easier task for me, so i went this route.
Don't you just love this stuff? Cheers!

I have an htc hd2 I wanna amplifer my wici signal, anybody know is it possible?I bought a wireless usb adaptor for my laptop it is call Gsky 500mw.it is able to get 10 times mor signal and stronger than normaly. Can i do something els with my htc?
Thanks a lot!
good idea, but the current amps use to much power for it to work for long periods, wifi kanes the battery anyways and adding an amp to it would just kill it an hour ot two.
but...
you can make sure that your using the full power of builtin wifi by making sure that it isnt set to battery use over speed
my tg01, and my old diamond, i had the option to change the power of wifi for better battery times versus faster transmission and connectivity.
have a mooch around if you havent already done this, its on the powersave app normally. or performance?
or...
you could make an external antennae of sorts, it might work, but getting like 2 feet of copper wire and twisting it so it looks like a rectangle and affixing this on the back of your phone somehow, the phones wifi might gain more amptitude if can piggyback on something....or it might restrict your wifi usage somehow? i dont know,
have fun
No any plug for antenna at Back of my phone. It has only 1 micro usb 1 for the head set.I dont care if its eat my battery so fast I'm not gonna use my internet for long. And I dont care if a nedd to plug 2-3 feet cable.Because I wanna reach a wifi ruoter what is maybe far away from me.Thanks a lot!
no there wont be an antenna plug, youll have to take the back off, and remove the metal plate to access the htc wifi adapter, and solder or otherwise hold an antenna cable to that.
by the way, this WILL VOID your waranty. also its not the easiest task going...
kk most phones dont have wifi ant. plugs as they are not needed
but...
i remember seeing on ebay some time ago these little clear stickers with some copper wire etched into it to boost the 2g/3g signal, these were not directly affixed to the phones arieal in anyway, they literally were stickers you put under the battery ( so they are close to the phones builtin radio) and they boosted signal that way.
maybe a similar thing would work? if two wires are close enough but not touching they can both share the same signal ( try this with speaker cable,it works)
it works because all cables emit a sort of interference (apart from the noise free type) and if these interferences mix you get mixed results but maybe it could enhance your signal.
we need some experiments on this i think, anyone up for it?
So it is not gonna work,if I get an USB wireless adapter with antenna and plug it in my micro usb?And if I don't need it,I just unplug it.Or any other chance to get a strong wifi signal to my phone. What if I get a portable wifi router and I amplifer signal with this.I hope you understand what I'm wanna say.Or maybe it is not possible?I bought a yagi antenna and I plug it to my 500mw Gsky usb wireless adapter and the wifi signal is more stronger. How can I get my phone work with this?
you cant use a usb wifi adapter as your phone has no drivers, and never will do.
as for using an amplifier attatched to your router, or a seperate one, this will work reasonibly well.
You can look at http://www.cell-phone-accessories.com/htc-hd2-antennabooster-magnetmount.html
I don't know if it works fine. Only I' ve seen this site.
Also:
With my LEO I obtain the max WiFi connectivity removing the back metallic cover and taking the phone with my hand at the bottom half of it.
Hi everybody!
Trying to use the combo USB hub and RJ-45 LAN port while installing winxp, I've found out that it does not work ("limited or no connectivity") because the LAN RJ45 socket seems to be wired in a different manner compared to the LAN port of a laptop or network switch or router, i.e not for 2tx +2rx pairs but for only half of them. Although I think that this is the correct standard way compatible with integrated cabled networks (computers+telephones), this confoiguration does not work on simple home networks, I don't know why. I guess that the RJ45 socket is wired in a peculier manner. I experienced the same thing with another external lan/usb adapter.
Did anybody else face this problem and found a solution / adapter?
Thank you!
The lan port is working perfectly normal. I think you should look at your cable or home setup. I've plugged is for many years in many different networks. I never used XP.

Thank you Thaihugo, you are probably right that there is something in connecttion with my home network, although this is the first time it is proven not to work with one computer unit, i.e. via this combo usb hub. I will check it over the week-end. It not specific to xp, it happens in Vista too. I mentioned xp because I needed to validate the install before going ahead with the wireless board and all the trouble.
P.S. An off-topic important question: finding out that the lan adapter connection doesn't work with the fresh xp, I got back to Vista via the recovery function Fn+F3. Does this mean that I must redo the HardSPL installation and that until then I cannot flash any new ROM on the winmob side?
Nope, they are independent. HardSPL is for life (or until you flash a stock SPL)
I've an HTC Desire HD and can connect via wifi, I could connect via cable and tether a PC via the phones 3G signal etc However, I was wondering if, in the absence of USB connectivity and no wifi or 3G, would a USB to RJ45 cable be made to work? That is, having a wired ethernet connection to the phone's microUSB port. Obviously you would need an ethernet driver on the phone.
Now I don't have an immediate need for this, it's more a case of 'I wonder ...... '. I've read that USB host mode is not possible but not sure how/if that would negate being able to driver ethernet over the microUSB port. Anyone know for sure?

I think the answer is not without usb host, and the cable would need to be more like a dongle with a nic in it.

I have seen this work using a Router with a usb port.
It requires a Linux router with enough guts to do it, Tommato/DD-WRT running, and one must fiddle with it. Essentially one uses the router to share the internet USB connection. It is probably the cheapest and most supported route.

That would be lovely though .. Ill try it later ...
Let us know how it goes.
Back in the day I had an HP iPaq that didn't have WiFi built in, but I could connect it to a wired network via a small adapter that functioned as a nic. Hypothetically you could find or fashion such a device to function over mini-USB, and then write some drivers to get it to share data with an attached computer. Just my 2c.
If you want to write drivers, you have a whole new level of complexity.
USB port of a router is a known cheap solution.
I'd have to second the OP's idea, as it does have merit. Hopefully the work on getting the USB Host working can show some results in the future....
However, I'm in the same boat, where I have a Nook Color running CM7 I use as a tablet, and an N1. I'm also on business in China a lot, and I prefer to use the NC in place of a laptop, although in some places wireless is flakey or non-existent. In those scenarios I'd rather not use the N1 as an access point using the 3G network to run data, as it adds up quick, even when using China sim cards.
It's these situations where a means to connect an android device to a physical ethernet is desirable, whether by USB or by wireless to a dongle.
This is the one device I'm testing out now is a CQR-980 from Cnet. You'll have to google it, because I can't post links.
The reason for this unit is it's size (its 3.52 (L) x 2.32 (W) x 1.06 (H) inches), and full support for setting up a secure wireless environment. If it works right, I will pre-configure it as an access point with WPA2, and it should be able to be plugged into any ethernet port in a hotel or otherwise, and I should get an IP on the NC or N1 via wireless.
If anyone else has found a better way to make this sort of setup work, would love to hear of it. The fewer devices I have to bring the better. Yet this is still better than dragging even a small laptop around.
I have seen this work using a Router with a usb port.
The Phone got to have specialized hardware to enable it to use just that USB to RJ-45 cable.
But in my experience, I could be wrong about it. Don't know what the R & D guys will cook up next.
This could make the job of having RJ45 connected to USB?
http://www.cnetusa.com/eng/CQR-981.php
Also this seems interesting:
http://www.euogo.com/usb-lan-adapte...to-rj45-adapter-for-android-tablets_p420.html
Will it work with an ASUS Transformer (Honeycomb 3.0)?
I have looked around a lot on the web for the MicroUSB to RJ45 Ethernet on a Droid, no luck. I have small hardware devices that have embedded configuration servers that are only accessible via TCP/IP Ethernet RJ45 ports and I normally use my netbook for that. I thought it would sure be cool to be able to access those embedded servers via my Droid2G for example, and get rid of the netbook. It seems like the phone can do almost everything else.
I've read about USB host mode etc, and the mini dongles with NIC's in them seem more promising, but I guess there has not been a big enough need for the guru's to go after it. Aparently it may available on the Android 3.x tablets but no able to backport to Android 2.x? Verizon will likely never upgrade my D2G OS.

What if you used this but also used a usb extender so you could plug in the phone cable to the usb to rj45.? Then all that would be left would be the drivers.
With the exception of cybdroid's situation I think that a little wireless ap would work great. I have a little netgear wgr101 that works great.. you connect it to a rj45 port in the motel, and then wifi from the phone or laptop.
The reason i'm on this tipic, is I was thinking rj45 to rj45 on a copier. Then I can set same subnet, and ip range with a crossover cable(or ipx on on the copier). Then I wouldn't have to use a full laptop to troubleshoot...
now i'm not an apple fan but redpark has something for the i- series of apple products to do exactly what i'm curious about... you can check it on the tech journal.
Now that I spend some time reading and thinking, I might even be able to use my little wgr101 if i figure out a hosts file in the android os to direct traffic through the router. And, if I don't have to wear out the usb jack on the device, all the better.
I think I have my problem fixed, just went ahead a posted this as it might give someone else an idea. Might be a solution that even the op enjoys entertaining... I think op#2 and frayedends are on the right track.
Hi
I found some topics about that but some are old ,
how can I plug ethernet cable on iconia , I was thinking about USB adaptor but I didn t find name of product wich works.
Is it a prob of iconia or andoid ?
thanks
You'd need drivers for any device. Kernel modules, dunno if the Android kernel has any built already though. Should be easy enough to get some of the most common ones compiled though.
Hi
you mean I buy one, go to website of the supplier and try to find driver for android ?
I didn t think it was so easy
the best device for this, wifi router
You just plug in the ethernet cable and than...go wireless
ah yes I tried to use USB but you are right WIFI router is an other way, and in this case probably easier thanks
an other question about this wifi router, is it possible to use with all network ?, I mean my issu is when I am at the hotel ( very often ) and have only ethernet cable to connect .
I'm going to guess this is a laptop your using. Set up internet connection sharing and establish an ad-hoc connection to the tablet....profit.
If you're at the hotel with a desktop for some reason you can always plug the wifi USB adapter into it as well.
today when I travel I have 2 laptops , company laptop which is totally locked and I can not anything and I carry my own . I wanted to avoid to bring mine and use tablet .
it s why maybe wifi touter is good idea but don t know if I can just plug on hotel network .
You should be able to, just have to config it as an access point. It will basically act as a switch with wireless.
I created a topic a while back about Wifi being disconnected after waking from standby. I turned off standby mode then and dedicated my 5GHz band to the shield. Problems seemed to go away, but they've been getting worse over the last few weeks. This is xposted on nVidia's forums, but I want to see if the XDA community has any advice as well. Any help is appreciated
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've had my Shield TV since about last November. Overall the unit is great but I'm getting problems with Wifi that seem to be getting worse. When I first had the unit, it seemed like it would disconnect from my wifi after going to sleep and need to be restarted or manually reconnected about once a week or so. I have an ASUS RT-AC68U, and I am using my 5GHz radio. The Shield is the only device I allow to use 5G, and from Wifi Analyzer, there are no other 5GHz routers in my neighborhood. My router and Shield are on the same floor of my house, and only separated by about 20ft with minimal obstruction (Shield is inside a TV stand, router is in the next room with door open.
When the problem first started, I set the unit to not go into Standby mode, which seemed to help (it was always disconnected after coming out of standby).
Now it seems to be getting progressively worse. The unit now needs to be rebooted after not being used for some time. This is typically once when we first get home from work/school and later on in the night after dinner. In addition to Wifi not working, Wifi Direct often stops working as well as my shield controller wont work. I have to resort to a USB keyboard to get the thing to reboot.
I have updated the firmware each time it becomes available which has made no impact on this issue. Currently I'm on 3.1 stock firmware. I have not rooted or unlocked this device. Does anyone have a similar issue? Is there anything I can do to try and fix this? Connecting by Ethernet is out of the question, I don't have a drop near by and I bought this unit because it has wireless AC capability.
I got disconnects from wifi but never seen an issue with the wifi-direct which is for the controller. The 3.1 update did sort the issue with my shield remote though.
Honestly the short answer is to use Ethernet to get the best out of the kit, even a cheap Homeplug networking kit would be better than the wifi. Besides the wifi drop outs, I had no end of grief trying to get SPMC/KODI to access shared folders on my network with wifi (yes even 5GHz).....using Ethernet resolved the headache.

*sigh* It's frustrating to buy something for a specific feature (wireless ac - upgraded router as well which I had been mulling for a while)... to have it not work. Thank you for the suggestion though. I was looking at just getting a wireless AC AP or adapter if I gave up on the sheild's network, but the homeplug is in the same ballpark and probably more reliable so I'll keep that in mind if it gets to that point.

No worries...I do realise it's not what you wanted to here. IMHO if a device is static then hard wire it, I use wi-fi only for mobile/portable devices.
I think your best move would be to look at getting a triple pack homeplug kit (dual ethernet ports would be good). One is for the Router, another for the SHIELD TV and the third (if you deem necessary) for your old router. Hopefully your old router can be setup as an AP and extend your wifi further throughout your home or garage/garden even. The kits are dead simple to use, although they can be fussy about the power extensions used...Ideally you want one that has passthrough so you can plug the adapter into the wall outlet, then the power extension into the homeplug adapter (Just a word to the wise in case you go this route and encounter problems).
I've had my SHIELD TV for a little while too and I also thinks it's great....I've been offered silly money for it from friends, once they've seen all I've set it up to do. I've actually got to the point now where I want to do a factory reset. I have done my experimenting and now know what I want on there, so it won't take long to redo and i'll lose the junk in the process...perhaps it might help cure some of the wifi niggles I encountered too...who knows?
Wish you all the best with it

Thanks. I switched to my 2.4G wifi and problems seem to have gone away, at least for now. Probably try that a little longer. I too have thought about resetting and using one of the custom roms on here.
Using 2.4Ghz is worse for some users from neighbor's wifi causing it to drop out.
I use 5Ghz and have to occasionally restart the device to fix it.
You would be better off using power off instead of relying on standby mode as that is buggy and prone to causing issues with stuff like audio and a stored media playback glitch.
