It's real, not myth.. :good:
Before bought this beast, I already now about AMOLED burn in, and already browse tons info about this.
So I'm totally 100% mentally prepared that my >$500 device will suffer burn in too.
(but not that fast.. wow.. )
7-10 days, I see that mark (ONLY on *#0*# blue test, and only slightly).
After almost 3 weeks on moderate usage.. just see my pic above..
Conclusion:
- I'm still happy with this beast..
- It's big but pocketable.
- Screen is very2 nice... and very comfortable for browsing, e-book.. :good:
- As I'm totally prepared for this burn in.. I'm stil okay now.
Just sharing... how about yours?
PS (IMPORTANT!):
DON'T SEEK FOR THIS BURN MARK IF YOU DON'T MENTALLY PREPARED!
OR YOU'LL PISSED OFF, ANNOYED, ANGRY TO SAMSUNG, ETC...
IF YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR NOTE, JUST LET IT BE..
BUT, IF YOU CAN LIVE WITH BURN IN SCREEN ON YOUR EXPENSIVE DEVICE.. please, try to test it & report here.. :good:
My note 3 month old and don't have that issue than God

I bought mine in November and have been using automatic brightness the whole time. No screen burn so far fortunately. If you want my advice, you should use a launcher like ADW EX Launcher that allows portrait to landscape transitions. Although even with stock touchwiz, if you rotate your phone during browsing or viewing a video, you should be fine.
This may sound ridiculous, but I have read somewhere that running an AMOLED screen with a full white screen at 100% brightness for a few hours actually fixes the burn in. Devs?

Maybe...the result should be a consistent burn-in over the whole screen^^

:fingers-crossed: actually, there's some method (it's on play store) to reduce/eliminate this.
(note: i've never tried this app, only read in seconds, so i'm sorry if this info is misleading )
that app will actually display full-black background & blue bar on status bar location. and you should run this periodicaly, and hopefully it won't show burn mark on status bar again.
So.. actually, that app will degrade the blue sub-pixel on status bar location so it will even with the rest of blue sub-pixel.
well, I think (if my interpretation of dev's info is right).. it's just like u said, my friend: "Maybe...the result should be a consistent burn-in over the whole screen^^"
I don't see it on my 6 month old Note which has had a daily 3-4 hour display on time.
I wonder if it's because I sometimes use it horizontally when playing videos? It would be interesting to know if it's reverseable by evening up the burn in?
Or maybe there is a break-in period at the start where it's more susceptible to burning?
No burn in on my 9 month old either, and it sees 5 to 6 hours screen on time daily.
Using Nova Launcher, in both portrait and landscape, and watch quite a few movies.
Regards,
Dave
No burn-in on my 6 months old Note, and same thing on my 2 years old Galaxy S1 as well. I have a colleague at work with a Galaxy S1 which does have bad burn-ins all over though...
I'm thinking it must be linked to the brightness level you use? I'm on the lowest setting pretty much all the time. I'm assuming your theme / status bar color would also play a role there?

50% brightness.. as lower than that, is not good enough .. -I came from LG Optimus 2X & Huawei Mediapad.. both IPS LCD-
Very moderate usage. Standard ROM & Theme.
In my case, I think, it came from web browsing. As most web is white / bright background.
(start today, I browse using Opera without status bar & navigation bar.. as navigation bar location beginning to burn too.. wow.. )
I have been using Go Launcher to hide the status bar, for a couple of months now, also i reposition the widget on the home screen now and then.
I read a thread the other day, about people asking how to keep the display on while using an navigation program, I warned them about burn-in but they did not want to know.
John.
I have had this since I got the phone. Remember that sticker on the screen that most Note phones had? The one with Amoled logo, wifi, gps and other words? I can see the words/logos burned in when the background is grey'ish.... annoying but didn't find it worth sending it for a screen replacement, might end up with worse...

@michom: It's not a burn in. I agree with Tinderbox, maybe it's the glass coating.
since November (that is more than 8 months) with heavy use (to the point that I need to recharge twice my battery daily) with max brightness always (only at night brightness is reduced)... not a single burn yet
Best advice I can give you is to use full screen browsing with stock ICS browser or opera mobile. Also make sure you are hiding the Android notification/status bar at the top of you screen use a launcher that auto hides it.
And finally don't use apps that don't have options in their app settings to hide the notification/status bar. Prolonged use with that bar visible will destroy your screen
ICS stock browser has a labs setting to let you go fulll screen

Do an LCD rgb test. I guarantee you have burn out when you go to an all blue screen.
Wait, so you have to set up a particular background, under special conditions to see it ?
Which means that even if it happens, you never actually notice it in daily use ? In which case why would you ever care ? I know I don't.

Wrong. Blue degrades fastest but you will see its ghosting effects on any grey or white background. An all blue Screen let's you see how particularly bad the damage is. If you scroll your home screen left to right on a grey or white background you'll see all the ghosting from the burn out.
That's why you should never dock and leave the screen on an amoled device.

I've seen a few users post that they already have a screen burn in. Nothing much can be done as its all about luck of the draw.
IIRC, it was ezynow and randomgent who posted that they've gotten burn-in's already.
Burn-in is just an un-avoidable property of OLED in general.
Having said that, your mileage may vary, obviously. I have had mine running at 100% since I got it a month ago, and thus far I still haven't had any issues.
What bothers me more is the random life span, yours is at 100% over a month and someone just got it in days/weeks of usage. Then again thats what the 1-2year of warranty is for.
I don't think your screen-burn is permanent one.
Yes, OLED cannot stay away from burn,
but just a month or so after it hit the market.
If yours is not so serious, it can be fix by this.
1. Save the following white picture.
hassou.up.seesaa.net/image/white.jpg
(i cannot post outside link. please copy and paste)
2. Install HideBar or HoneyBar and you can hide system bar.
Display the white picture as fullscreen.
3. Wait for 1hour.
(of course you shoud turn off "auto screen-off feature"
for example, install KeepScreen from market)
Im not sure if displaying a white image over 1hr is beneficial, its like degrading the OLED cells at full blast for 1hr.

You are right about degrading.
This is like "white wash" feature of some plasma displays.
It will consume a little lifespan of the screen,
but it is effective to remove image retention.

The problem is that you are burning the whole screen which will just shift the colors of the whole thing to yellow and you will burn the task bar area at the same time. All that will do is make the whole screen dimmer/yellow together including the task bar area.
The only way that will work is to display a white screen EXCEPT where the task bar is so it evens out more.
If Samsung was smart and would use a more OLED friendly color like yellow or green for the icons and set the gray to black there would be no issue.
I am sorry about my lack of explanation.
First, I thought this was "image retention", not "burn-in".
These are quotes from samsungplasmatvfaq.com.
----
Like burn-in, image retention is the phenomenon of being able to see what was on the screen just prior to turning off the unit. Image retention eventually goes away and has no effect on the display. However, it may indicate your contrast and brightness are set too high.
True burn-in may stay on the screen forever and never disappear.
----
I sometimes notice image retention on my p6810,
like what was left of task bar or software keyboard or something.
Exactly the same as first post's screen shot.
But those are eventually removed and for now,
there is no noticeable burn-in on my tablet.
If hungelt8's case is image retention like mine,
it can be fix with my "white wash".
It may not take 1hour, good to check out between times.
Unfortunately, if it is real burn-in, my procedure won't be a solution.

If you don't have root, just be careful not to use your tab with that burned landscape mode.
When you switch to landscape mode, make sure to use it with "another side" up.
If your burn-in is not so serious, it will fade away in a few days.
(Of course, it may cause another image retention.
The best way to prevent this is getting root, install HoneyBar or HideBar,
and when you read ebooks or watch video, hide the taskbar.)

There is no solution to fix since its already burn. I don't want to say that, changing screen it will fix. If there is a developer can make theme all white background then it won't bother us anymore hehe. Actually I love this tap that's why I did sold my first tab then get the new one. Thought that I am lucky not getting burn the new one but unfortunately it still happen so I just don.t bother it anymore. Just let it be and enjoy with it because I've already paid the price.

The so called burn in appear yellowish (like a tint) and it's actually degradation of the oled cells in that screen area. If you inspect closely, the brightness is lower on the discolor section. Nothing you can do about that except sending it back to Samsung. I consider it as manufacturing defect.
and a very unfortunate one if you get it in less than a year of usage.
Thank you all for your help. The burn-in issue is getting worse and worse day by day... I think I have to send my device to Samsung for repairing.... Can't imagine what will happen after the warranty expires
Reading these issues is preventing me from buying this tab. Damn you Samsung :-(
It is very odd that this happens so quickly. I thought these were supposed to last thousands of hours before degrading. With these it seems to happen after a few hours. Are they using like first gen 5 year old lab prototype screens in these tabs?
Where is your tab made In ?
All the devices that I found in my city where made in vietnam .
I really want to buy this tab but the screen issues is scare me out !!

Been a lurker here in xda-devs even before i got my s2 last july 2011, Am about to have my actual s3 in about 12 hours from now. It seems the Ink mark/blotches issue is getting out of hand and some individuals are even opting to have their unit replaced/serviced because of the said issue. So its about time I step up and DID my own investigation about this issue:
Test Setup:
Canon 60D DSLR
Canon 50mm 1.4 USM lens
Galaxy S2 (SAMOLED)
Iphone 4 (LED - Just for comparison)
so lets get to the point:

Camera: Canon
Model: Canon EOS 60D
Filename: IMG_1213.JPG
ISO: 1250
Exposure: 10.0 sec
Aperture: 2.8
Focal Length: 50mm
Flash Used: No
so the dreaded ink marks/blotches on screen scandal? i dont think so
because in Normal Usage, you cant even see those blotches
comparison with Iphone 4:
additional note: I used my S2 in posting this because my s3 will be arriving in a few hours. reserving the first three reply threads just to confirm ( repeat this test with the s3)
Bottom Line: Stop complaining about it, you wont see it in normal useage. thats all.
Important discovery: using this long shutter method also uncovers screen burn of my 11 month old S2 (upper part of the screen where time is) a good discovery heheh
Test Setup:
at last someone who knows what he's saying and a proof at it...i remembered a dude here who loved to whine too much about screen displays, but when asked about proofs and stuff, kaput...brave one mate!
I had a screen burn in and an ink mark on my Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 and never really paid attention to it. I'm a phone owl who uses phone at night all the time. This problem doesn't really bother me. Yes, it's there but who cares

Nice effect with the long exposure. Try it on black with the iphone?
I know it is called screen BURN IN, but the noticible view of the notification bar isn't necesarry a burn in. Plasma TVs have this as well, it isn't a burn in but rather a ghostly remain of the previous image that is slowly fading.
Try opening a black picture with white lines for 20min, then take the picture again, it might show the black lines instead of the notification bar.
You might, MAYBE, brake the myth about amoled burn in. How cool would that be

BRAVO!!!!
Finally someone open a thread to shut up the whiners and not to join them.
My congrats to you sir.
If people find it irritating they will complain.
I have a couple of ink marks on my unit, I could put my dslr to use and grab a shot but the truth is I cant be bothered to do so.
My point is the problem does exist on the S3, however as stated above you dont see it during normal use so I'ma keep my unit.
I've never seen those on my gs2. I have a 4.5 inch one with the dreaded streaks, and it shows up on EVERYTHING, even on max brightness. That is a bigger concern. Hope the pentile gs3 doesnt have it. They are like lines on an old vhs tape, you know when you have to change the tracking to try and remove.
There's no use trying to be judgmental about people's complaints. Half the posts in threads with the smallest issue (camera jingly noise, warm phone, not perfect white) will tell the OP to return the phone. I just assume everyone on here is an asshole, including you!
cripes i love the attitude of people here...we have screen issues in the note threads and most of them uberly whine and complain and talk crap...but the ones who stuck it out are now reaping the benefits...honestly peeps...the problem is or may be there but it can be mended...lets wait for the actual s3 tests
The thing is that this problem exists since SGS1 days. Passing through the note, gnexus, etc. So you know that this problem is gonna be on the SGS3.
I have the ink marks too, i have a horizontal line about 0.5 CM long on the upperside of the screen.
In normal situation you can't see it, to see it you have to be looking right to that line in darkness watching a black image. I do that about 5 minutes before i go to sleep.
This is a non-issue for me. The problem is to the people who can see it under any light situation, i can understand them.
But if you are taking a picture in a complete dark ennviroment to find spots. Well, it's better to leave it there.....
@OP Im pleased for you that all of your marks are small and unnoticeable. Unfortunately, that is not the case for me... I have a large one right in the centre of the screen, visible without a DSLR.
And for the record. I can't see my marks either on high brightness like you used in your test. Try watching a film at night with the lights out, something with dark scenes like Tron. That's the real would situation i'm unhappy about.
I don't see why this issue shouldn't be discussed by people affected by it. Just my two cents.
Some people can and do see the spots and marks in normal use, and the fact is the quality of AMOLED screens and their durability varies a lot. This is what people are concerned about, don't generalize and say there's no problem.
Wondered how long it'd take for the complaints police to arrive here.
Agreed. Makes me laugh how the OP has basically set up a thread to whine about other people complaining. Even though some of then have legitimate reasons.
I think he was just bored because his S3 hadn't arrived yet. Ended up performing inaccurate tests on his S2 to pass the time.

i guess the point of the OP is valid somewhat for the reasons that some people here complain too much about screen problems and do nothing about it even if some able members suggest solutions...as said if you have a warranty and have noticeable screen issues then by God use that consumer right...and i hope you provide us with an accurate screen test of phones so as we may know what should be done...

No, i don't use full for a long period even outside.
Always using at 25% to 50%
*#0*# i looked that and i tested and the RED and GREEN seems fine, just the BLUE seems a bit more light from the status bar place.
But for look that burn in i should look very close with my eye
there's an app on paystore. i guess it's called "burn-in tool" or "screen burn in tool" just search for both.
basically what it does is to flash different colors on your screen for a period of time to neutralize or even out the burn in.
Okay, thanks i'll test Screen Burn-in Tool and will report back if does it work after some hours
After 5 hours of running the apps.

Iam using my phone as a navi and I have a burned in screen now. Some button of the navigation software are visible in the background even when software is closed.
My provider said its caused by the heat in the summer and therefore they wont replace the display.
Actually the phone was never in direct sunlight when used with the navigation software.
Thats why I called Samsung and talked longer time with that guy on the hotline. End of the story:
Samsung sent me a box to send it to them. They will replace the display.

Of course. Had it one the SGS2 as well. For the record: in a very small amount: could/can only see it when displaying a solid color screen, like a completely grey screen for example, not when using the phone normally.
So for me it's not a very big deal, but the phenomenon is there, it's on all Amoled-phones after a while.

On my S3, i did not noticed that. Maybe it's just because i started to look an topic about the burn-in then after i noticed that on my S4.
On the BLUE and GREY i could see that or typing *#0*# then checking only blue is affected and not RED, GREEN.
Thanks you mate for your informations

That is correct, as blue is the color that ages the fastest. It's not basically burn-in but rather the different aging of the subcolors. Samsung chose to make a diamond-shaped Pentile screen for the SGS4, like shown here:

Where a "normal" RGB, non-Pentile, screen will usually have pixels like the one of the left below. The one on the right is another type of Pentile screen, this time without the diamond-like structure as on the SGS4.
You can however clearly see that the blue subpixels are much larger. Done on purpose as they age faster. So this way the burn-in will be a bit less apparent as they will still emit more light after a while as they would when they were the same size as for example the green ones.
Sorry to bump an old thread, but i too have the same status area screen burn. Mine is in 2 parts; the 1st is where the status bar is, the 2nd is directly below it, where the web address banner is in the Browser app. This makes sense as I use the browse a lot where the colours in those 2 areas are very dark.
I have my brightness set to auto.
I agree a lot of people must have this issue, it's just a case of you being able to spot it as it's kinda hard to spot it of you don't know what you're looking for.
When doing the *#0*# test, it's visible on blue and receiver (white). It's also visible during some full screen YouTube videos.
I had the same issue many time with my Galaxy S2 and I always sent it in for repair including some photos of the problem taken with a camera.
Guess I'll need to do the same with my s4

Still faint taskbar burn in present in mine. Always use auto brightness. What now? Contact Samsung? From what I have read a new phone isn't going to fix that right? I keep my phones in top shape and plan on selling it in a year anyway. Unless someone was looking for it they wouldn't notice. Perhaps I just do nothing if it doesn't really get bad. I'm pretty sure the problem is being caused by running slacker radio and waze for hours on end. Would I have to mail this phone to Samsung which would leave me without a phone until I get it back? What are generally the condition the phones they send back in? I am worried about getting a phone with some other issue or with more wear than the one I have now.
It's natural for SA screen, beside if you don't use phone too crazy, it can last 2,3 years for you get a new phone.
I had screen on time over 10 hours per day for my s3 during a year, it's has status bar burn in, but hard to notice unless display full white screen

Yeah, the only time I really notice it is when I am playing a game in landscape mode or am watching a video. I can't believe this is acceptable.
I know there are a few different threads about various screen concerns, but this one is specific to color distribution. Sorry if this belongs elsewhere.
I attached a picture of the Note 3 screen without any screen protector while on the dark gray color from the LCD Pixel Testing app. Apologies that the uploaded picture isn't rotated properly. The bottom-right has a purplish/pink tint to it and the top-left has a greenish tint. It's not the camera angle/picture because I took another picture of it from the same angle, but upside down and the coloring moved accordingly.
I also took a picture of the Note 2 under the same conditions to make sure that this isn't normal for other screens, and the Note 2's screen was much more consistent. I've experienced uneven color distribution on the Samsung UN46B8000 TV, but not on a mobile device.
Does anyone else have this type of uneven screen color on the Note 3?
Thank you!
Im not sure why is this happening. Im now on my third replacement and every one has this hue or tint in different parts of the screen. Im not sure if its fixable but I gave up on samsung. I just hope it goes away after some time.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to check out display models and see how the uniformity is. If they are worse than mine, I'll keep mine. Still, I think that Samsung should really work on this. I've compared it to the Note 2 and S3. All have better uniformity than the Note 3, which saddens me as I was really looking forward to this device.

I've seen worst when I tried to get my second replacement, so I decided to keep mine.

I spoke to one of the tech guys at my work and he said it could be a power issue. The power source could be coming from the upper-left corner and it gets weaker as it goes across the screen, which could explain the gradient-like change in the display. If the pink is at the bottom-right for all our displays, it could be the explanation.
We looked online for a proper teardown, but we couldn't find one that showed where the screen power originates from. I don't know about this because I'm not sure if full/more power would result in a greenish-blue hue. The only evidence I can think of that supports this is that the Note 2 and S3 were overly greenish-blue in tint over the entire screen.
Does everyone affected have greenish-blue on the top-left that fades into pink on the bottom-right?
just tested mine with the app i got no tint or diffrent hue .. I've tested it on AUTO, Manual low, high brightness settings..
I have these problems since I own AMOLED devices, and that is now for quite some time (see sig.)! Me too had to exchange each device a few times until I got some with a almost perfect screen! On both N9005 I own so far the lower screen side is darker, although there are other significant differences between the two screens: the one of the second device is much more uniform! plus no1 has sharp pitch up in gamma on the leftmost 5mm over the whole side (maybe this screen has been cut out from the edge of the mother-substrate: the more from the center the better, due to principles of metal mask lithography)
I've done a few posts in regard to this in the past, if interested use the search function!

Another problem I have: When CUP is on medium to heavy load, screen brightness and contrast start to go up and down slightly each few seconds on all brightness levels, even on manual and lowest brightness! this happens on both devices, although here the first one is a little more stable! for me this happens always when in gallery for example, due to CPU load because of media scanning... Seems to be some load or thermal brightness throttling mechanism implemented (guess: in some part of the kernel)...

mine doesn't have a hue but on really dark colors (like the dark tapatalk theme) the screen color is uneven on the background.

I'm happy for you. For me, I gave up and bought LG g2 and I'm so glad I did. I just love this ips screen.
I'm wondering if it's there is edge LED lighting and the screen is just uneven.
My first one was like yours which seems very bad. Took it back got a new one, this one has the issue too, but its not that visible. I wanted to take it back again, but then i saw a guy who took 3 Note 3s back and the last one was the worst. So change it until you find one acceptable and next time wait a bit until Samsung gets better QC, or hope for another player on the phablet market.

It's probably not as bad as I make it sound. You can only see it if there isn't any light in the room basically. I took a screen shot of the battery status menu and cropped it to the all "black" part and put a black dot on it. In a totally dark room (doesn't mater what the screen brightness is) see if you can find the dot. It's pretty small you have to zoom in a lot. But using this image I can see the uneven lighting on the screen. If there us ant kind of color displayed though it's totally invisible.
I'm kind of worried about getting one that's worse too. that's what's got me not wanting to deal with it. A lot of them down here have been getting returned to best buy and Verizon because of a signal issue or battery drainage problems.

Nope. Obviously. ?
So I returned the first one and got another. This one is better but there's a big dark band that goes across the middle. It's not as pronounced as the last one though. -__-

Try this in a dark room. Using Display Tester app test card Grey #808080 and put the brightness in the screen tester to as low as possible as well as your phones brightness to low as feasibly possible. The check out the lower half near the home button. You will see it being slightly different and darker. Both mine and the wife's do it. Her's possibly a little bit more pronounced than mine. Normal, as I never notice it during day to day or night time viewing. Point being I have to go out of my way to find this so called issue.

can confirm this! and it was the same on note1, note2, ... on basically all amoled devices i owned from samsung so far!
the "problem" is the manufacturing process of the amoled screens:
they were cut out of a wafer. in the process of exposing the wafer with a light source through a FMM (fine metal mask) the exposure is not evenly distributed over the whole wafer. the more from the middle your screen has been cut out, the better it is! the gradients (down side darker, right side darker, ...) are due to the gradient light exposure of the wafer before cutting!
so it's all luck of the draw: atm i have one (!) decent screen out of 5 devices! the bad thing is: on this device the thermal throttling is comparable worse then on two of the other devices i have, but on these the display is very uneven!
so it seems to be a hard task to get a device where a) the screen is perfect and b) there are none of the other known problems (wobbly button, thermal throttling, noisy camera, ...) present!
thank you samsung!
Sorry, just got my G3 a week ago, and I have to ask you guys, and girls, is this bleed on picture malfunction or is it normal for G3 screen?
On the left is my G2, and on right G3. Booth on full brightness.
Thanks, my OCD ih heavily impacted

right. i get that but if you turn them each down so 50% and 75% does the problem persist? how often to you actually have your screen at 100% day to day? and how often are you staring at huge black blocks day to day?

ok well from a quick check i noticed a few things...which led to a question.
1. where did you get the black background from?
i ask because i thought i would try a couple ways. i covered the lens with my finger first, i noticed when i did that i had to make sure i got the lens 1000% covered or i *would get a little bleed.* but not quite what your showing.
i then tried my black sheets which showed the same result
eventually i used a combo of my finger my sheet and a dark space and got it looking like i thought it should.
cranked up the brightness to 100% (which ive never done) and MAN that thing is painfully bright...got the picture up from gallery and went to the dark again. i DID NOT see the effect your seeing.....UNTIL i got a little off center, when i wasnt looking straight on i would get the EXACT same thing you pictured, and the more i tilted the phone the more i would get it....so IMO i doubt in every day use youll ever notice it, but mine does the same thing too so i dont think there would be any reason for a return....later today ill edit this all together with pics.
but dont worry, i think your fine.

Thanks.
I used done full-screen display test from playstore.
I kinda see it even in everyday usage, but that can be subconscious. Have no idea. Please try to make photo in complete dark, black wall, and on 100%. So we can compare. Thanks mate.
I've tested mine with Hiden Menu - Device test tool - LCD Test - Automatic Test/Manual Test
On D855 with different brightness and with dark room or in daylight the result is the same, the background looks without any temperatured color it just come from black to gray and white... Other colours also seem to be good. I think it is a malfunctional screen device. You should try to send it for warranty.
But you can also check before if you have move anything on Accesibility Screen Color Adjustment, If you have move anything there... then try to turn it off and make the test again.
(In my experience this is my first device with normal screen temperature without any spot color on dark/white backgrounds... I have managed HTC and Samsung devices before and HTC always was showin yellowish edges and samsung greenish spots).

It's just, like, brighter in lower right corner, than on rest of the screen. Purpleness of the screen is bad photo.
