Poll for GPS issues - Legend General

Hi Guys/Girls, after struggling for ages with the GPS on my Legend trying different roms and not having much luck.
I know I'm not the only one who owns a HTC Legend that is also having Problems.
I've been trying to diagnose what could be going wrong with the GPS, as it used to work perfectly up untill more recently. Ive been trying different radios V's different roms, as I have read in a lot of other threads for other android phones, the radio is supposed to match up with ril libs other wise it can cause issues, however in my time with the legend forum, i have never come accross that fact....
I've tried pretty much every combination of rom and radio available to no end, also with 3g data on/off wifi on/off, it always come back to this issue:-
I have signals and my phone see's satellites, it also uses them, but what I have noticed is that using GPS checker, it never shows up any Azimuth or Elevation data, Obviously if there is not data, no location can be calculated.
I have a theory and I need your help to see if I'm right or not.
Originally when I bought my phone it had stock eclair and GPS work as it should, I then updated to the stock Froyo which then gave me the Hboot 1.01 :crying: , GPS also worked as it should, I then rooted it using the standard Hboot 1.01 guides GPS also worked after rooting.
The only thing I have done differently recently is, I've use the HTCdev Hboot 1.02 to unlock my boot loader, I'm not sure why this would do anything to GPS?
As I rarely use GPS it's not something I took much notice of after I 1.02ed it, when it comes to technology I lean slightly towards the OCD of things, some of you may have noticed so this issue is driving me batty .
So here's the Question, for those with GPS issues, which Boot loader are you using?
Thanks for you input...

hello ranger4740,
i updated my bootloader some months ago from 1.01 to 1.02 and i unlocked it some weeks ago. These activitys did'nt have any effect to the GPS-functionality. I still believe, the GPS depends from the used ROM ...

I've had some troubles with GPS over time while using my Legend and what I've seen helps fix GPS issues (tried it on a few cyanogenmods and on a different device) is using a clock sync app (I use ClockSync).
Reasoning behind this was that when I checked the time on my phone it showed a different time then opening a console on the phone and checking the time there. Once both are synced GPS started working fine.

could it be that beta3 fried our chips?
i've tried to get a lock a few times with beta3 but i can't remember getting it...i'll try a bit more, even with cm7 and will report back to you....
EDIT: restored my cm7.2 backup and gave it a bit time and i got a lock (so no chips fried)...will go back to beta3 to try it a few more times
EDIT2: restored beta3, gps works fine...
also i had the same bootloader adventure as you had,and i'm sure that didn't effect your gps

Hi farukb, I would highly doubt that software could cause GPS hardware failure like that, but that's not 100% impossible.
CPU master and other variants are software which controls the speed of the CPU, Overclocking the CPU high and for along time can damage the CPU eventualy.
I have tried the suggestion by razy0 of syncing my phone clock, it showed my clock was -0.786 seconds out of sync, when I synced it, I instantly got Azimuth and Elevation data showing up on GPS checker, I havn't gone outside yet, but this is looking promissing *Fingers Crossed...

I don't think it's a problem of software.
I've never had problems with my GPS, and I've probed many Roms, eclair, froyo, cyanogenmod 7.1, 7.2, zeubeas beta 3...
I'm s-off, and hboot 1.02.

I had a lot of problems with the newest roms, now I use legend_crq_1.3, and the problems with Gps are gone. So I think a driver is the problem.
I have no problems with S-on and now S-off using legend_crq_1.3.
I using link2sd, therefore S-off is needed because of the mount script.

As an update, I am currently back on cm7.2.0, without repeating to much if what I put in my other thread, GPS works well with 7.2.0 and if it does stuff up it can be easily fix using the method I put in my thread...

Somehow my GPS stopped working

Had been running 7.02 and then updated to 7.03 the other day. I had an occasion to use the GPS yesterday, and it refuses to get a gps lock. GPS Status show 11 sats, yet it never locks. I did the old CM7 > CM6 > CM7 trick and it will lock once, and only once. (this was after turning GPS off and then back on)
Any clues?

You definitely dont need to do the cm6 fix, that was only for if your gps wouldnt turn on at all. It didnt have anything to do with it getting a lock or not.
Using gps status: Menu>Tools>Manage A-GPS state>Reset.
Menu>Tools>Manage A-GPS state>Download.
Also, do you have your Data connection turned on? Or wifi? If you try to get a lock without one of those turned on it can take quite a while. And try to get your lock outdoors and without moving until you get your initial lock.
If that doesnt do it for you I would first suggest re-flashing a fresh download of 7.0.3.
And finally, which radio are you running? The originaly 2.1 or the updated 2.2 radio?

Thanks for the response:
I have tried the A-GPS reset and data, without any help.
This fails with either WiFi on or off and out and about ( in car)
GPS was working on my phone with 7.02, but in between the last time I used it, I had installed Tasker and updated the radio (I was getting lots of dropped calls on my morning route) and upgraded to 7.0.3. Restoring my Nandroid 7.0.2 does not resolve the issue, so I do not believe that it is a 7.0.3 thing. I guess I can back the radio update out and see if that was it, not sure if that made any reception difference anyway.
Thanks,
T

yea try reverting the radio image and let us know if that fixes your issue. Ive seen other posts from people having issues with the newer radio image. Ive not personally had any issues but every piece of hardware is different.
How do you revert back radio images? I have this problem too sometimes. I just exit GPS Test and start it up again and it finally finds my position after I was already connected to satellites.

This is a typical Q&A thread, which is in the wrong forum. I'll move this to General.
I'm also having GPS issues but mine when I'm using it if I make a turn the arrow will stay facing the same direction (if I'm facing north and turn east it still faces north) but if I'm at a stop light sometimes it fixes itself I'm using cm7 rc4 I had to the original cm6 back to cm7 GPS fix. It work for along time flawlessly nvr had any issue till now. I haven't updated the radio either

Sleep of death (SOD)

I have had a half a dozen totally stock mytouch 4gs that will run perfectly fine but about 4-6 times a day I will pull the phone out of my pocket and it will be totally unresponsive to the power and trackpad buttons. No led no button lights or anything. To get it back to normal I have to pull the battery and reboot. I just loaded virtuous fusion 1.0.6 and the problem persists.
I've tried factory resets, formatting the sd card, new sim card, turning off screen animations, clocking the cpu higher when the screen is off, and running with no apps and no google account set and none of that has helped. The only common thing between all the phones is my number and google account and it still happened after a factory reset without signing into google.
Has anyone else had this issue? Am I just extremely unlucky?
I just loaded loaded the 26.08.04.30 radio we'll see if that helps...

i've had this problem as well, usually only once a day tho, the led does still work and the buttons do light up as well button the screen just wont turn back on unless the battery is pulled
i posted this in another similar thread but still no answer, i want to know whats wrong! lol
I have seen this but not that bad, are you checking your phone constantly cause thats what happens to me. Lock, unlock, then the lcd doesn't light up but led, and buttons do, try loading the newest radio 26.09

At one point I thought that too. I thought "theres no way they sent me SIX dud phones in a row." So I wiped my sd card and did a factory reset without signing into google or anything and loaded no apps and it still did it.
I noticed though that when I pull my sim card out and use it in my other mytouch 4g(which works perfectly fine with that sim) this phone will not show this issue without the sim in it. So I started thinking it might be the radio as I've tried a different sim card and that didn't work.
This is my first day with the new radio so I will report back with my results.
Well that didn't work. It just SODed on me twice in a half an hour.
Should I try flashing the other radios or CM7 or something? I'm wary of flashing too much as I have the dreaded M4G2E emmc serial.
i also have the latest radio but still get this problem every once in a while, i almost wanna say i started noticing this after i started flashing different radios tho, first the 26.08.04.30 radio then the newest 26.09.04.26 radio

Maybe I'll try the oldest one then.
I noticed today that if my phone becomes unresponsive and I plug it in the charging light will come on and I can boot the phone without pulling the battery. It does a full boot too not a fastboot. For some reason though if I do this it will SOD on me way quicker than usual.

I think that is the issue your EMMC. I had this problem with my phone, then one time it happened when I pulled the battery it bootlooped and CWR showed me that lovely error... be careful. Wish we would know if your other phones had the M4G2E as well. My current phone has the other chip and I have never once had the SOD like I did on my old chip.

GPS losing signal, heats, freezes, drains battery

I've been using HyperDroid rom for a long time and been having issues with my navigation software for a while and I'm not sure what the exact problem is.
I'm using iGO My Way and sometimes the GPS will work fine for a while and then a lot of times it loses signal after about 4 minutes and won't lock back on until I reboot the phone and restart the program.
Then at other times the phone gets hot and will just freeze.
I also noticed after these things happen it won't help turning the GPS on/off, it will keep draining the battery even if I turn it off. I always have to reboot to get everything back to normal.
So I don't know if the GPS module is bad, or if it's not a good idea to use iGO.
I haven't tried using other navigation software since I need an offline one with maps of Israel. I don't have a data plan.
I did use SportyPal many times in the past for cycling with GPS and it never froze.
Try to use Sygic for a week...with this one I doesn't had any of your issues since android was given to our leo!
Hey thanks! I gave Sygic a try and the GPS actually connects much faster and so far I didn't lose signal in the middle. Also the phone doesn't get as hot as with iGO. It only froze once, but I'll keep testing it. It's much smoother and faster than iGO though.
Well, sadly, I lose signal with Sygic also...
I don't know what the problem is :/
Sygic
i have been using Sygic from quite a while now. It does not works well with few of the ROMS.
Currently i am using American Android 2.3.7 and it works like a charm for me with it.
Which ROM are you using ?
HyperDroid 5.8.0 but seems like no one else is complaining about GPS issues.
Could be the radio version (2.15.50.14) or maybe the GPS module on my phone is defected...
chance your rom
You can change your rom bro.I think you have to
Because radio is not problem 2.15....... is very good.I am using same radio, but different rom.I havent problem with igo or sygic
Yeah but I like HyperDroid. It's fast and stable!
I'm waiting for the ICS roms to get better... then I'll probably switch.
Hello
Sorry for bumping this but I have exactly the same problem. This has nothing to do with Sygic. The problem can arise with any application that uses the GPS and fails to shut it off properly (at least that's what I understand). From the moment that this happens, the GPS doesn't work anymore, heats up the phone and drains the battery fast. The only way to get it back working is to reboot the phone. Turning the GPS off and on, doesn't change anything.
I had this problem since 2.3.7. I had found a kernel update that had fixed the problem in that version (dorimanx's kernel but I can't remember the version) but since I upgraded to ICS and now JB the problem came back. With JB it works much better but it is there. With ICS it was a nightmare. I have tried many (over 10) different ROMs and each and every one of them had the problem. This is something that has been around for ages and nobody seems to have found the real cause or a remedy. I'd love to cure it since I love my HD2 and it's the only thing that is marring its performance. Have you had any success with it?
Regards
George
i to have had this problem and i find it to be a rom problem will work ok for a hour or two then have to reboot the phone the only rom i seem to get it to work ok are the old gb light roms its about 120 deoxd
Had the same problems with most of the sensation or other sense Roms. The problem is solved since i use 4.x.x Roms as dataonsd installations. Now googlemaps works like a charm. Love the traffic info

GPS never works after Froyo

hi all.
Ever since I went from Froyo to Gingerbread-based ROMs (and since then to ICS) my GPS has never worked.
AngryGPS doesn't find a single sattelite after 15 minutes, it just like the GPS is dead.
All ROMs I try claim to have a good working GPS, however none actually works.
The GPS lock icon, which should be blinking, is there but not blinking.
Since most people claim to have a working GPS with ICS, could it be a problem with the phone itself?
(I always try the GPS after a reboot)
Thanks for your help.
Been having the same issue, i have tried tens of solutions and flashed tens of fixes, i even opened it to try to fix it and it still doesnt work like its suppose to. Google maps never get my accurate location, its usuallly about a mile off, mapquest however is able to give me turn by turn navigation albeit its often late in its guidance. Very frustrating.

Well, I do use ICS passion right now and I did use eugene's kernel at some point in the past (maybe with MIUI, don't exactly remember).
Anyway none of them had working GPS.
My phone was manufactured at July 2010. Could it be some old revision with GPS problems? Although I did apply the hardware fix back when I was using 2.2, which did help back then.
This is why I'm sadly back onto 2.2. GPS still sucks but better than on GB.
I did everything possible to get GPS to work on GB. I've done the hardware fix, I've flashed everything possible, and the only time it worked was after each reboot, and only then temporarily.
Agree 100%
GPS in ICS is flaky. It usually works right after reboot then it's a gamble. A few times it would work for me for a day, sometimes second run of GPS Test doesn't bring GPS icon up at all.
To make things worse, external GPS support is equally bad. I have a feeling it uses the same driver/daemon.
Obviously there's either not-so-compatible driver in kernel or the API is broken.
ABC
Try a app from the market called GPS Aids. It does help for me.

Unfortunately the "donate" version does nothing but ask for donations.
I would kick in something if it actually worked, but not on speculation.
GPS at least sort of worked with stock (whatever was on the phone when I got it used) but never at all with any CM build, including with various fixes applied. It at least sort of worked with Onecosmic's ICSSGS, at least once, maybe with some fix or other applied.
A quick update : Turns out, I need two conditions for the GPS to work:
1. The phone needs to be after a reboot, so it didn't go to deep sleep
2. Data connection (WiFi / 3G) should be enabled before you try to get a lock. Even when you use a satellite-only location! I think it downloads the satellite data from the internet. When you get a lock, the data connection can be disabled.
This is the only way I could get my GPS to work in ICS. Even in ROMs that promise the deep sleep problem was fixed.
Cyanogen never let me down, I was usually using some kernel that a worked with the ffc mod, but I literally never had a problem. Also try any miui with angry GPS

I did the this (kept stock kernel though) and flashed the files from this post...

The trick that worked for me was to get a GPS lock as soon as the phone boots up but before the screen shuts off (see Post #26 by dark79 in the above link). Usually takes about 30secs to look but works great even after deep sleep.

Atrix - GPS Problems!!!

Hi guys,
I'm totally confused and frustrated.
I used Runkeeper on my first Atrix succesfully for 6-months - the Atrix then died and I had it replaced. The new Atrix still worked brilliantly, getting a GPS lock almost immediately, but over the last month or so, the CPS seems to be all over the shop.
It takes an age to lock on and then the accuracy has dropped off.
couple of thoughts:
1) I use Google Latitude, it also worked flawlessly on my first Atrix, but the new Atrix didn't update my position on Latitude anywhere near as well as the first Atrix from day one.
2) I installed the Great Land Grab and also MapMyRide a few weeks ago - these worked really well first of all, but in the last month have been rubbish - not seeming to get a GPS position without endless rebooting and restarting of Apps etc.
3 Using GPS status - if I stand in a middle of a field, reset the datat and download new data - the quickest I can get a GPS fix recently has been circa 50 seconds - I've no idea what the time was before this all started happening.
Is there anything else I can do other than reformat the phone (I've already removed MapMy ride and several other fringe apps that I thought may have had a gingerbread issue or similar)
Cheers
Wilf
If this is a question then use Q&A section and if its not then plz give little more info like ROM, Kernel, Bootloader (locked or unlocked) and finally plz dont take this the wrong way but have u used the search option of xda-developers. Trust me its free and fast and if u use it correctly ull find out that almost 95% of the problems u might have are already addressed.
Start reading up on the different radios available for the Atrix. I have read some since my gps takes a while to lock on too. Reports of increased gps fixed times seem to be rampant if you find the right radio for you.
I had exactly the same problem and solved with flashing 36p radio. Now GPS lock is in few seconds with all satellite visible and accuracy is great.

Original uploader made it private for some reason. I uploaded it again on my account: http://www.mediafire.com/?7y8k6f6797bw3bf
In my previously post you can find link for servers where is hosted a lot of radio and other files. Currently is down.
I did exactly what Zeljko1234 said and I will test out the 36p baseband on my lunch break with GPS Status and see how long it takes. This morning in my car it took 143 seconds.
37P did the trick. GPS lock in like 6s or less all the time now.
36p vs 37p
I'm using baseband 36p currently and the gps has worked flawlessly, my girlfriend has an unrooted atrix which is on 37p and was having major issues with finding location on maps, so I figured maybe is was the baseband. I switched my rooted atrix over to 37p and didn't have any problems with GPS either. Then she insisted it has to be a hardware problem, I figured "user error" was more likely, but instead of pointing that out I wiped her data on maps and BAM! her location updated for the first time in 5 weeks.
How did you wipe the data?
And which data exactly?
Is baseband 36 or 37 better for GPS ?
What's the best one?

I just went into manage apps and cleared data for maps in there. I have been using 36, but they both seem very stable.
