Hi, I have a few questions about home and application screens. By default, there are 7 home screens. Whenever I install a new application, an icon appears on the Application screen. So far, besides the icons Samsung put on the home screens, only Dolphin Browser HD and its affiliated voice recognition app (like siri) appear both on the Application and home screens.
Q1: In the case of personal computer, we have an icon for each application. We can also create an alias that could be put on the desktop. Are those icons on the home and application screens alias to the actual applications?
Q2: Whenever I tap on Gallery, I see icons such as: Camera (76), Camera (19), external_sd (2), ScreenCapture (12), Videos (1).
a. How come there are two folders that are named exactly the same (Camera)?
b. I like the fact that Galaxy Note displays a preview of all the photos. When I tap on a photo, it is enlarged. Is there any way to display the name of the file at the same time?
Q3: I am considering to install and try out various 3D launchers. Do these launchers modify any system settings? Some of them have widgets that perform similar functions as the stock ones. Are they independent from the ones pre-installed on the Note? Alternatively, do they just use the settings from the corresponding pre-installed widgets with added eye-candy look?
I want to try out different launchers but I do not want to mess up with the stock launcher's settings. I may end up preferring the stock launcher.
Thanks.

I have not found any launcher or appdrawer that simly uses folder icons that is suitable (could choose custom) to the group. All/most launchers uses the iPhone app-miniatures-impossible to easily see-folderstyle. Also icons and foldericons are too small. So here is a suggestion.
3*4 big foldericons, e.x. social (phone, messaging, facebook), office (word, excel, etc), media (camera, pictures, musicplayers), tools, games, settings (settings apps, widgetsettings)
When a new app is installed, it is automatically asked in what folder to put it, or if create a new folder for it.
(I only found 3 icons in my example, and not very intuitive suitable icons, soo you have to imagine 3 more rows)
a extra feature: it could open up a cloud of widgets when sliding a foldericon. Example sliding the social icon pops up a circling cloud of facebook stats, tweets, messages, last phonecalls, and contacts. Or it pops up when simply clicking a icon, and further clicking on the widget opens the app.
Sounds good
Thanks don't hurt ya know?

With some work it could be done kind of, using SSLauncher: Only 2 pages. One page with informative widgets and hidden buttons to start shortcuts. One page with big folders 2*3 grid, when clicked they open folder showing app icons at normal size.
Minimal, non-distracting, fast. Screenshots below.
Sound almost exactly like folder organizer. You can have a scrollable folder on your home page(like the tools one in screen) or have icons like the those in the screen( tools games) when you click on the icon, you get an app drawer with only the apps you specified as that category. It also asks what you want to categorize an app as when you in install it, on a per app basis,

One of my major gripes with most launchers is that they don't bother to display the full name of any app icon on the home screen, instead cutting it off with a few dots. The default TouchWiz launcher is the least susceptible to this, but alas I've seen it do this with a few select apps as well.
Is it something that can be altered through decompiling an APK, editing some values, and then recompiling? I don't really fill up a lot of my home screen space with widgets and what have you so I'm more than willing to sacrifice some space just so I can see every name uninterrupted!
How do you add a settings shortcut for battery and wifi manager on the home screen? I've been scouring through the widgets and nothing seems to appear, normally with all other phones a "settings" widget is available and you get to choose which settings you want a link to.
Thanks

i was using the galaxy note ii for a while and loved settings widget/shortcut. i moved on to the galaxy note 3 on a different carrier. i also have sm-n9005. both note 3s do not have the settings widget. it is frustrating. what i recommend is installing action launcher by chris lacy. it will add 2 widgets to the widget launcher/menu. choose the activities widget. the list of apps and settings that populates is more extensive than the note ii's version. there you can add bluetooth, data usage, wifi, and tethering one by one. after creating all the shortcuts i needed, uninstalled action launcher. remember to keep touchwiz as your default launcher in the beginning of the process.
(on a side note, action launcher is great. i even purchased the pro key. however, i just don't like the way apps look in folders. in addition, 1x1 widgets do not align properly with regular app icons sometimes. as for 4 row widgets, it automatically adds margins/padding so they look more align with other same sized widgets. some 4 row widgets on touchwiz go edge to edge which is annoying. in regards to the s pen features, air command did not pop up on action. honorable mention, shutters is a great action feature. last mention, i don't use action on the note 3.)
What launcher do you use and why?
How about performance, animation, customize, unread count and other?

I actually use the default TW launcher. Customize the grid size, slap a theme on - it seems pretty damn smooth this time around.
Action Launcher 3 is my go-to besides that. To me it's the Google Experience Launcher + the tweaks it needed.
Nova Launcher has custom resizable grids, custom scrollable dock, and a host of animations and is very fast.
But the reason I can't live without it is gesture support. I can double up every icon with two functions depending on tap or swipe up. I can do this on any icon, any folder (tap opens the folder, swipe up opens the most used app in the folder), and even the icons within the folders. I can pull down the shade from a swipe down motion from anywhere on the screen instead of reaching for it. Through the use of swipes, folders, and a resized grid, I have every shortcut I need on a single screen. I only scroll to the other screens for widgets.
Flow Home Beta. Because it's everything I need right there on my home screen without having to open multiple apps to get the same info.
We're already discussing that here:

This, plus LMT, is my approach as well.

As already mentioned, there is considerable overlap here with the discussion in this thread - let's try to keep the conversations unified and what not - thanks!
Hi - I've been looking to replace my launcher from touchwiz as I need landscape orientation for the home page.
Do any of the alternative launchers support split screen? Doesn't look like Nova, Action Launcher or Google Launcher do, and I cant find Samsung's Good Lock for some reason as I thought that might.
Any ideas? Thanks
Samsung doesn't want launchers to work in split screen. That is a design decision which makes sense when you think about it. The same reason that the launcher does not show in "Recent apps".
Fear not, there might be a solution.
A simple trick would be to get the apk that you want to try in split screen and then edit its AndroidManifest.xml file so that the app doesn't know that it's a launcher. (Not sure if you can do that directly but most probably you'll have to Decompile the app -> edit manifest -> Recompile the app.
If you have spare free time you can google how to do all this. And see if its possible. (Most probably it is.)
I found a great solution! I force landscape mode using an app and Nova in split screen - ie I have music on touchwiz one side, and nova on the other. That way I can run any apps split screen. Inside nova I can run maps which wont run on it's own in split screen.
Touchwiz allows this with launcher apps which are not set as the default home.
In fact it works fantastic. I use it along with a floating app launcher so I can press home and it wont take the whole homescreen home, just the nova launcher.

I recently downloaded the GalaxyS8_Dark_clock_noframe.apk and it is WOW! Although I only got to try out the trial version on a Samsung Galaxy A3 2017 with android v6.0 (marshmellow) I noticed that in the gallery app the title for each album is white against a background of white and not black against a background of white or white text against a black background? See attached image.
Is there a freeware theme that is similar with the dark menus, notification window, etc as I don't have that much data so I can't google that much....
Thanks
