[Q] NexusHD and other ICS Roms explanation - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello everybody,
I have been using American Android GB for the past 6 months, but I decided that I want to try out the new ICS. I tried the two most famous ones the NexusHD and the MUIU one, but both were so laggy. They were completely unpractical for daily use. Nevertheless I think that this was my fault as other users say that they are happy with the speed. I have read quite a lot (not all) of the posts about this, but I still miss some facts.
My question now is can someone give me a tutorial (for dummies) about what to do in order to make the NexusHD rom behave as it should in terms of speed and battery drain?

ICS is better than GB now. I use it daily. You should read & do the same as guide in their thread. Make sure you do a fresh install & enough space requirement.

Backup your files. Do a clean install. Tytung's ICS is the best out there. I tried it but went back to typhoon. Some personal reasons I should say but yes it seem faster but with typhoon's a2sd I don't see any glitch with my apps.
You can use link2sd for ics but I'm still not a fan of it.

[Q] Experience with Ginger Roms? [Faster than Froyo Roms?]

Hey,
im currently running Floyo on my HTC Hero. Im wondering what is the currently fastest and best running Rom out there.
Are the other Froyo Roms out there better than Floyo? Why are they better?
Shall i test the Gingerbread Roms? Are they faster than the Froyo Roms? Do they run better on your Devices ? What about the battery life?
fiden
from my experience I think elelinux 6.2 is the fastest, but for me it's also a little unstable unless he's solved that problem since I used it (which was a few weeks ago).
floyo is really good too though so you might want to stay where you are.
make sure to use launcherpro which is by far the fastest launcher on the hero.
gingerbread is fairly fast but not really as instantaneous to respond to your taps as some of the faster older roms out there. I actually find that cronos eclair light is the fastest rom to respond to my commands, but it's a highly modified 2.1 sense rom which means you're limited to 2.1 features (if that bothers you, it annoys me now that I'm used to gingerbread).
It's a trade off really. gingerbread is the best os so far, but it does have a couple of graphical framerate issues in UI screen transitions and some 3d stuff.
It's camera might not be quite as fast or good as with older roms also, however I'm not convinced of that yet.
You can always create a nandroid of your current setup (or a bart which will be a bigger backup but will include your ext partition - sort of a necessary thing imho). then wipe all and try a gb rom. you can restore to your floyo bart backup any time if you decide to.
Froyo at the moment is very rock stable and still faster than Gingerbread (Beta). It's like comparing Windows XP and Windows Vista. GB beta offers something interesting. However, from time to time, you may experience FC, lag, GPS problem, unexplained reboot and some apps not useable (not updated yet for GB). The default camera on GB is still bad, very colourless. If you use alternative like Camera 360, only then it is good. If you use GPS a lot, bear in mind Runkeeper or Buddy Runner will have problem connecting to GPS. My daily working ROM is also Floyo 1.20. Use Nandroid to backup your Froyo first. Wipe all, Flash any GB ROM (I had tried Ele's 0.6 and Cronos' 1.10) to try out yourselves.

I haven't tried LP for a few months, but I am quite sure Zeam is faster
Of course Zeam doesn't have as many features.
Ive been running GB for about two weeks and have only had one lock up. (mind you I was reinstalling all my apps while trying to listen to music so probably my fault there..)
Only had 1 FC and that was in Gmail after I changed my signature in the settings but hasnt done it when I edit it since.
Havn't noticed any lag (then again I use Zeam, which flies along anyway),
and I get 3 days battery, half a day more than froyo with the same usage. (then again its using a different Kernel compared to what Froyo was using so that may be why).
As for colourless camera, ive not noticed any difference at all since updating. if it does worry people that much, you guys do know that the stock camera has settings for bumping saturation/contrast/etc up right..? and it remembers the settings so set and forget..?
But yeah. I switched to GB as soon as I was getting reports through it was all stable and nice and I have not been disappointed. In froyo I always used to run into market install problems every so often (items would download but not install, no matter what froyo rom I used this problem used to come and go randomly.) none of that yet!
Have not tried the GPS yet on a proper drive, but on preliminary tests (local runs around the block on foot and in car) I get a fix within 6seconds inside the house by a window and 4seconds out side, Google maps, Copilot and runkeeper all working fine.
As others said. Make a nandroid, full wipe, flash and have a try for a few days.
If you say the Ginger-Roms are still not stable, i will not test them and wait a little time until they are stable . Thanks for your help!!
So is there a difference between the Froyo Roms out there? Shall i test the others like Froyd or Elelinux or Cronos? Somebody made experiences with TastyFroyo from RaduG?
fiden
Im running Cronos Ginger (non-Anim)....
Its much faster than the froyo ROMs i had used in the past. Only problem is that some apps refuse to work... like Opera Mini, Angry Birds 1.5.1
But its not a big deal, its my day-2-day ROM and very useable
So far I'm finding the GB roms pretty damn slow (all of them, including fresh Cyanogen). The fastest ROMs are still probably modded 2.1 sense ROMS, but then your trading features for speed. There are a lot of very fast, stable and feature rich 2.2 ROMs out there though, so that is the safe middle-ground right now.
I've tried a bunch of ROMs, but as far as I can say, Elelinux's CM 7.0.0-based ROM (v0.6) is the fastest of all. Gingerbread ROMs for the Hero have gotten pretty fast over the last couple of weeks.
And concerning the launchers, I'd say Zeam's the fastest.
Sent from my Hero using XDA App
I've tried a lot of rooms too. When I went from eclair to froyo, I found many useful new functions (tethering the first one), but from froyo to ginger what are the advantages? I tried, but then I went back to floyo, the froyo version which gives me the highest scores on tests...
Tests arnt the be all and end all
For example, Tasty gingerbread rom gave me the best scores. but the UI was laggy as hell. the tests are just how information is moved about as apposed to how fast YOU can interact with the device. I hardly ever run tests any more I just use the best testing equipment for me, my eyes lol
hey thanks to all you answers.
So i put an eye on the new Cronos Froyo 1.8.0, which is out since the 10th. Somebody here who tested Cronos Froyo and somebody who can tell me about his experiences with CF?
Cronos is a very good developer... ive tested his roms in the past and there were many good roms out there a couple of them were the best out there!
What about Cronos Froyo?

CF 1.8 is great. Coming from CG 1.1 but CF is much much much faster! Try it, in my eyes no G rom is faster than Froyo.

MIUI or CM7 or? Nand or SD?

I have used CM7 (AmeriCan Android) for a while now, but sometimes have used MIUI.
I'm not sure MIUI is as fast, but it seems fast enough, and, er, well it does seem to be a lot more refined. So much so, that I have to wonder why I would use anything else.
Any reason why everyone is not using MIUI? I kind of feel there must be, I just cant see what it is!
Also,
For MIUI folk, should I take the plunge and go NAND? I have only used SD so far, I like the choice of dropping back to win mob 6.5, but is NAND MIUI stable for every day use?
miui or cm7 or nand or sd is question of taste ...use them all and find the perfect one for u
of course nand is more stable. and in nand thread you have much more choice. if you use a nand miui or cm7 you will have no lags etc.

You've piqued my curiosity. I've been (happily) using the ACA SD ROM with a 2GB data.image file. I briefly tried a MIUI SD build. I deleted it for two reasons... (1) My lack of familiarity with it could've been easily overcome by giving it a chance and using it more... but (2) My request on the developer's thread for possibly implementing a larger (2GB) data.image file, was ignored by the Dev. and all of the users who might've answered my questions. Yes, I'm familiar with toporesize, but didn't try it on that ROM. 1GB just wasn't big enough for my current use and no one would answer my question... so I trashed the ROM
Being ignored like that has never happened to me on the ACA forums. I'm pleased to stay with them.
If anything, in my experience with ACA SD ROM and Go Launcher EX... I find this combo to be more refined than MIUI with Sense. Granted, variety is the spice of life... and we all have different perspectives, but I'm sincerely curious...
What I'd like to know from you is... How is MIUI a lot more refined? In what ways?
Thanks, -Rob
Editing the size of an .image isn't exactly hard.
As far as MIUI goes, I've been using Lady's Rom, and it's better than ACA (IMO) so..if you prefer a more Iphone approach to Android then definitely check it out, if not use what's best to you.
Hi Rob, ok so I made a wide statement here and don't have the time to even attempt to justify it now. Even trying briefly, I just know I'll get proven wrong
With both I use SPB launcher, and have both looking much the same. Lock screen on MIUI lets me unlock direct to phone, sms, camera, music. Settings in MIUI is easier for me to find things. there are features integrated in MIUI such as firewall and backup, that need apps in CM7. The MIUI sms comes already already looking a bit like GoSMS (but simpler, not so fussy) sending an sms gives a confirmation that it was received. I think there is a lot more , but it just seems more polished.
On the SD side, I tend to agree that Cope and Warren are more likely to reply then Jag! There is also a huge following on their ACA CM7 so many can help. But, the MIUI Nand threads do look very active, so moving to that is a thought. '
I guess it may just come down to personnel preference I read somewhere that MIUI was based on CM and also that MIUI was more "iOS" like... the latter kind of puts me off just in principle!
Sorry, not much here to support my first statement! I'll probable go back and forth a bit.
NAND and CM7
So happy I switched from SD to NAND for stability and battery life. WINMO was incredibly buggy, and was on an awkward button press away from crashing.
With NAND you definately have further choices as to cLk of Mag bootloading. cLk offers you the ability to charge while the phone is off. Mag seems (to me) to have fewer data drops.
CM7 has been a speedy winner for me. I experienced a lot of lag with MIUI with the gadgets I used (agenda, Gvoice, Music). 6 months on the Typhoon Mod and no issues updating or crashes. Multitasking is incredible and puts to shame my iPad (I can't wait to get rid of that thing in favor of Vizio 8inch tablet).

New to HD2 need some advice please!

I have a used HD2 being shipped to me and have been reading for hours on this forum trying to work out which rom to use. Im none the wiser really!
The important things to me are:-
everything works (including camcorder!)
good battery life
smooth and speedy operation
a newish version of Android
I also have an Android tablet (Nook colour) and a zte blade and have flashed roms on those many many times using clockwork.
How is MIUI for this phone?
Any help and advice is much appreciated!
You can use CM7 or MIUI build.
Both of them as mark with your requre
Team Blue Droid have produced an excellent sense 3.5 Rom which looks the business and works far better than many others I have flashed recently on mh EU HD2. I am not that technically minded regarding SD card partition types, but I run mine via SD card after flasing a 1024 partition using CMR and the accompanying DAF.exe.
From reading many threads I understand camcorder is less than perfect on most roms at highest res.
link is below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1275119
Having working camcorder is important to me and im not really bothered about sense at all really.
I really like MIUI having used this previously on another device.
I notice many builds here though.
Any throw on which is the best for battery? or best all round?
forbest battery life you must use a cm7 build, specifically hyperdroid and langthang's ndt ginger are really good in terms of stability. after those there come miui roms.
some newer sense roms but older versions..... miui is excellent i run that daily...... nexushd2 is also a good choice......
Thanks alot guys
Best Battery life i had with this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905060
2days without charging in normal useage.
ATM i have this MIUI ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010498
like any other MIUI its incredible fast.
but sometimes i have the problem, that it lags and after reboot, my installed apps are gone. i have to reboot it ~3 times and than they're back again.
but this happens once a month, so its not that bad..
and as i said, all the other MIUI ROMs are as fast as this one.
good luck,
prexx
Thanks Prexx, your suggestions are appreciated.
I will look into these.

Looking for stable ICS ROM as daily driver

Hi guys,
I've been a longtime lurker here, and avid Android fan for sometime now every since I purchased my Nexus One. I've used CM and MiUI and all, but now am looking for a stable ICS ROM which can be used as a daily use ROM with ICS.
I'm currently on MiUI 2.3.2 (tried 2.3.9 but it seems to really be very unstable for me) which seems to work fine if not for the random reboots and errors from time to time, not to mention I can't seem to get the SD to mount when the cable's connected to my PC.
Long story short, which ROM would you guys recommend? I'd love to have CM, but since they're not supporting ICS versions for the N1, I'd have to live with others.
(if I'm just repeating earlier threads, please feel free to point me there and perhaps we can close this thread)
Thanks!
TexasIce or MeDroid
Both roms are in an alpha stage but quite stable and good enough as a daily driver for weeks now.
Medroid:
- More "Cyanogen"
- A bit faster and a bit more stable (imho)
TexasIce:
- "vanilla experience"
- Awesome kernel work
Thanks Pommes.
I was leaning towards Medroid myself, but seems like there's some controversy/drama going on there with the dev, and was wondering about the continuity of it.
As I've not blackrose-d my Nexus One, I'd assume that's something I'd have to do first, yeah? I've no need to be bleeding edge in terms of updates, but just would like to have my phone being able to update and not random reboot from performing any number of things.
Samuaz's laptop is dead and zyrex tried to sell the ROM, but Samuaz later posted the link to download it. Mods have locked all of his ICS threads, even the medroid discussion thread I created. The future of that ROm is very dim, but Timbit (and possibly Zyrex) try their best to continue its development here: http://code.google.com/p/nexusone-medroid-ics/downloads/list
dk_zero-cool is a notable developer for the HTC Bravo (Desire) and has made a very good ICS ROM for it. It seems to be based on CM9. He doesn't have a Nexus One to develop on, but since the Desire and Nexus One are practically twins, it shouldn't differ that much.
Texasice is another development god when it comes to bringing ICS for us in his/evervolv team's version. It's not stock ICS or CM9, it's their "remix" of it which looks really nice.
As far as I'm concerned, these are all daily drivers, depending on what you need for a days use of your Nexus One. If you absolutely must have a fully working camera, then none of these ROMs are daily drivers for you. If you accept that there are bugs and that the camera isn't working 100%, then all of these are daily drivers. I personally recommend either texasice's version or dk_zero-cool's version.
I saw dk zero's so smooth and working camera preview now

There's also MIUI ICS that's stable enough. Haven't yet flashed camera fix patch recently released upon that rom, but I heard it can fix camera preview too.

Thanks for this feedback, trying to flash dk zero's version now, having to Blackrose my device first which mean I have to flash a non ICS version as I can't USB mount my phone.
Quite an adventure just to have to work around as I had did a full phone wipe and lost my recovery in the process, in addition to MiUI reset wipe which seemed to have hung and I had to remove the batt to get it restarted.
Just set the custom blackrose partitions and hopefully can start flashing dkZero's version with hopefully a working camera preview as you've mentioned!

Thanks for the update, however after all the issues I've had with MiUI the last week or so and then switching from 2.3.2 to 2.3.9 and having to restore back to 2.3.2 as the latter was too messed up on my device, I think I'd rather wait till there's a more advanced RC or stable version before attempting to flash it again.
Not to mention, I'd forgotten why I'd shy-ed away from MiUI in the past, too iPhone-ish of a UI (yeah a change of launcher might help, but I'll give this other ROM a try)
I've been using medroidmod daily - however the microphone isn't working anymore (for the past two days) - so I'm struggling to rebuild it.
I have so far been unable to get Bravo ICS to install. I have blackrose with 16mb cache partition, and m2sd packaged with Bravo is not redirecting it to SD no matter what i do, and 16 is not enough for ICS.
At this point i am tempted to go to CyanogenMod 7.2 - daily struggle with ICS is wearing me out.
DK's is AWESOME....best ICS for N1 and its not close.....super smooth and great battery

Of all the ICS I think texasice rom is good one as its stable but as theshawty mentioned it gives vanilla experience. DK's rom is more inclined to CM9 and its just cool. Got into bootloop initially but after tweaking settings in memory management, I dont get any reboots. Battery is good and rom is smooth. You can try dk IMHO.
If you want something stable, do NOT use ICS. Simple.
Ive used both medroid and bravo, I think medroid 1.4.2 was very stable with alot of customization, I didn't personally have problems with the mic but I know others did, and Ive also used Bravo so far it has been fantastic for me so far, the dev behind it aswell is very responsive and gets things fixed quickly, the only draw back is the lack of customization between bravo and medroid, I just feel like i'm missing 80% of the options and tweeks i'm able to do with bravo.

Well, texasice's ICS and dk's are surprisingly stable.
Medroid 1.44 is smoth and stable. It already includes the last camera fix and a few other updates.
Non-HWA ICS Roms where always stable for me.
On HWA Roms I always had sleep of dead issues(phone freezing a few times a day), but I'm running Medroid 1.4.3(with camera preview fix flashed) now for a few days without problems.
HWA uses a lot of memory, so that could be a problem in the long run.

Well, I was on CM7.1 for what seems like an eternity (used to switch ROMs quite frequently at one point) but figured its time to test drive some ICS stuff and as long as it isn't constantly random rebooting, and crashing. Its stable enough for me!

You should use 4ext, then you don't have any install problems.
Bud I had problem s after recover all my apps. Only dalvik and cache wipe has cleard this problems (endless boot without cache wipe?!)
BCM is very smoth but without the stock email app (i need exchange for my job) it is not realy usable. After install it (stok email app, not gmail), i had a huge battery drain. Charge via USB was not possible (whats wrong!!!), battery is discharging...
Then I went back to medroid 1.44. Medroid is not so smoth like BCM (why not???) but with Nova Louncher (not with stock) it runs very well. The best ist ScreenState works realy but you have for both cases set the CPU governor to SMARTASSV2 (or onother stats but whitout ondemand, that is very bad)
BCm is very very smoth, like CM7, but batterie drain on my phone was frightening!
An other problem is wlan, higher than channel 11 seems not to work (i had test channel 12 to 13, channel 9 does not work also, all othed channels are busy)
PS. I have unfortunately not possible to post in the corresponding post.

Best android vers.

Please people, tell me, what is the best android ROM for HTC HD2 ?
ICS 4.0.4 don't work very well(camera don't work, people can't call me, etc)
Maybe there is some older vers. what's working well ?
Thanks.
Older Gingerbread builds are stable and almost in 100% perfection. Choose your ROM from several devs, I am using Typhoon and it's quite nice for everyday use.
Gingerbread for sure ..i used hyperdroid stable n fast

Which ICS ROM are you using? I've used NexusHD2 (ICS version) for almost a month now and never had a single issue of the ones you've mentioned, and neither do most users. For daily use, ICS is by far the best in all honesty.

But if you like retro style, I'd recommend you using Hyperdroid, that is quite fast too.

? You literally install an app and you have Link2SD, it's hardly much effort. And the UI of ICS is infinitely superior to GB, the HWA makes a tonne of difference in scrolling and gaming and especially the browser performance, and on ICS things load faster. There's no feasible reason one should use GB over ICS now other than simply not wanting to bother because they already have GB installed.
ICS custom roms are improving day by day. I have tytung ICS rom now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860
and it works very good for me. I have no issues with camera or phone calls.
Only 160 dpi seems to be problem, while creating shortcuts to contacts... i just can't see call button when touched them. But if you are using 240dpi it works almost flawlessly now.
But if you won't like to install ICS rom, you should try previously mentionted Hyperdroid, my adventure with Android on Leo started with this rom and had it for a long time.

I'm using Paranoidandroids ROM and it's the best one I've ever used.

Installed yesterday and work great from now. Very smooth
Right now, IN MY OPINION, based on my experience, you're best options for HD2 are Tytung's ICS Rom if you want an ICS based Rom, its smooth and everything works, Paranoid Android is good also and has allot more Mods but more buggy. Gingerbread based Roms are all pretty much perfect by now. I recommend UrDroid for Sense 3.5, Pure Cynogen for CM7 Based Rom, and MYMIUI for MIUI based Rom. I have personally had the best experience with these Roms, but there are others that are excellent roms as well, I dont mean to take anything away from them, i respect the works of all the chefs that make the HD2 Great.
Happy Flashing!
Would agree with above on ICS.
GB even with all the tweaks in the world is a UI horror in use & viewing, when look at level of development gone into it through official & unofficial channels I would of expected a hell of a lot more no hassle innovative features ...
I saw 200~ hours uptime with my vanilla miui 2.4.20. Did not have any problems. Using till 20/4/12.

I have a Android froyo 2.2 (darkstone build the newest one desire build) on my htc hd2 everything works phone, web, mms, keyboard just everything however the battery life is horrible i mean bad. with out using the phone and just on standby by the afternoon around 3 or 4 i have about 50% battery and yes i have tried app killer from the android market still no good. i know my battery isnt bad cause on my regular windows os it can last me a day plus so i was reading and other people dont have this problem with other os but its kinda confusing to find the rest and people dont really give enough feedback on other roms so what im asking is that does anybody eles have problems like me with the battery? if you dont can you please tell me which android ROM is best and send me a link so i can try it out thank you
