SMS messaging replacement recs? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Ok, I really don't like the stock ICS SMS messaging app. Looking at playstore, it seems the Go SMS is the most popular replacement. Anyone have recs for other apps to consider?

Handcent is a good one. highly customize app

I used to love handcent until I tried gosms and haven't looked back. Very customizable and plenty of themes to choose from. That'd be my pick

Hnadcent for me

I think you mean you don't like the stock touch wiz messaging app?
i LOVE the stock ICS sms app (pure google ics app with the green logo) but hate the samsung touchwiz app...i hate how every mms is a slideshow
I tried handcent back on my captivate and it crippled my phone. Thought I'd try it again over a year later and it made the phone instantly almost unuseable. Don't understand it. Pissed me off so much i wrote my first review on the market lol.
I tried to go with a stock ics app from the market, but it was taking a few extra minutes to get my texts.
Went with GoSMS and its useable until I get on a pure google rom.

I'm giving Go Pro a try, if only because it seems "prettier" than Handcent. Stupid reason, but anything is better than the stock SMS client.

I used handset forever... Then tried gosms one day and never looked back. It's themes are nicer, and it never crashes. Love it.... I too hate every stock sms app I have ever used, except for htc.

The last time I checked GO SMS on my Droid X it didn't allow me to use individual alerts for different contacts. Does stock do that or does GO do that now? That's a feature I love about Handcent.

Is that Go or the S3 app you're referring to? Just want to be sure I understand...

I was used to the MIUI SMS app, and loved how it told me when a message was received by the person.
Any of the replacement apps do that? I tried it with handcent and didn't work.

Go. I think it had a whole think under the settings called individual settings or something, and you can add individual notifications etc I believe. Download it and check it out.

I think I also saw something in handcent somewhere in the settings where you can also get alerts/notifications when something was sent or delivery confirmation...something like that.
Download Go and check it out.

No way in stock app but handcent and I imagine chomp as well both support it. Personally I can't stand sigs in texts. Cause I text a lot. I don't need to see your name or any other stupid s**t at the end of your text lol. But anyway try out handcent or chomp. I prefer handcent. More customization options.

I have used it for quite awhile and really like. I also liked how you could set you default messaging to it on eclair, however have noticed on the Froyo builds it doesn't give me that option (ie... click on stock messaging app and it will open handcent). I also like the customizations that you can do for each contact along with custom notifications for each contact.

my led flashes using handcent. I really like handcent especially for the popup notifications.
I have been using handcent on my last 2 phones. I have never had any problems with it and I love the high level of customization options.
Used it and liked it a lot. I had to ditch it, though, because when my automated work pager would send out texts, it would show two. No idea why, but it was a Handcent issue.
Big fan of Handcent. I really like the popups. Been back and forth between Chomp and Handcent but have been sticking with Handcent.

I absolutely do not. I don't see what the point is. Tried it and went back to stock Messaging app. Nothing there for me.
Stock app wastes a lot of space with user pics. Plus limited config options.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Tried it and hated it. Never liked the bubble style messaging. I like the stock better, just seems cleaner and easier to read.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Handcent is great. You can change nearly everything, including the chat style. Chat bubbles are not the only option. There is a style that is similar to, but better than, the stock app. The mms shows up in the chat screen unlike the way the stock app does a stupid slide show. Handcent also backs up your mms, even allowing you to select the back up directory. The popup chat window is also very nice. The ablility to respond so easily is extremely useful. At first, the number of config options is overwhelming.
I use launcher pro plus on my phone. I had handcent on my evo and now on my epic. It is far superior to the oem app on both phones. Remember to disable the notifications in the stock app so you don't get double notifications. The nice thing about launcher pro, other than being much better than touchwiz in every way, is that you can set handcent to default for messaging. This completely eliminated the use of the oem app.
Epicly posted using the xda app!
+1 for handcent. Its rad! Something you don't like? There is a config option to change it more than likely.
Only beef is the outragous $6 price for pro. So many options to reset every flash. Fixed this with mybackup pro data restores.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I've tried both but prefer ChompSMS. Look into both, they're very similar.
My wife and I both love it!
It is just so customizable. The free version has worked fine for our needs.

After seeing the advice about the settings, I'm sold on Handcent now. Takes a while to deal with all the customization in there but now that I have it looking more like the stock without the bubbles and white backgrounds it definitely is nice. The pop up on the lock screen is nice, and so is being able to select recipients instead of having to type their names. Way more features than stock.
I've use Handcent on any Android phone I've had and love it
Is there a way to set this as default when clicking the Messaging app in the dock on touchwiz? And I don't mean opening messaging then composing from handcent.

Handcent is so laggy once you have used GO SMS Pro. I don't get why people are STILL recommending it. I wouldn't use either laggy Handcent or the underdeveloped ChompSMS.
Only problem I have with GO SMS Pro is the childish themes. But I just use the dark theme anyways.
I really haven't had an issue with the stock SMS app. Do most people toss it away because of the lack of features or what?

Actually, you can keep using the stock app if you just want a popup/quickreply feature, download an app called sms popup.

It comes with CM7. I believe it has been posted to these forums somewhere, but if searching doesn't net you any results, you can just extract the Mms.apk from the zip file of ÇM7 pre-beta for this device. As I mentioned, you have to be rooted (as far as I know) as it's a system app. Back up your texts first using SMS Backup or similar from the market.

I use the Mms.apk from /system/app of CM7.3 Stable for the EVO and for the N1. They are different file sizes and I found the N1 had more features. (strange I know) plus it is for a GSM phone, EVO is a CDMA. Anyway point is that AOSP Mms.apk is pretty generic and you can pull it and the alarm clock, the calculator, the Email.apk CarHome.apk and a few other apps. Some will just install some require you copy/paste into the /system/app/ Folder.
FYI I just tried Mms.apk, I am rooted but it installed just like any app. So you should be able to just install it, No Root needed.
Interesting...did it install as a system app or a normal app (did the package manager install the apk to /system/app or to /data/app)?
I like the stock blur SMS app as well because of it's simpleness, but on Alien 4 it will not resize attachments so I use Handcent, been using Handcent for some time now (even when I was using CM7 on my Aria) and have never had a problem with it. I've tried others and have always gone back to Handcent. The wake lock you speak of, please elaborate...I have not notice my phone not idling or anything while using Handcent.
The stock mms.apk that comes with CM7 is nice if you like the barebones look, I don't and that's why I like the blur sms app, it is not so bare (although it is very short on settings).

[Q] Best Text Messaging App For Nexus 4?

I don't like the stock SMS app because of the text alignment so i've been searching for a good DECENT STANDARD messaging app. I do not want anything fancy, I want something that fits the Nexus 4 theme considering I have a Nexus 4. I want something that's good & responsive.
There is no best, it's completely subjective. Try out a few of the most popular SMS apps on the play store and figure out which one suits you best, its probably faster than waiting for replies.
