Cell standby - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

So, I have been reading lots of reports about the international versions suffering from high cell standby percentages some over 75%. That instead of the ma setting to be set at 3.4 that it is actually 34. Well I checked my sprint version, by pulling the power profile xml from framework res folder and it also shows 34. My cell standby is at 25%. Phone has been off charger for 23 hours and I have got 3.5 hours screen on time. Most of it on wifi. Although battery seems decent, is this something to be concerned about?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Nothing to be concerned about as its just a reporting estimation error as you mentioned. So it shows about 10 times the usage you actually see. Your cell standby is probably 2.5 percent instead of 25
In fact I edited mine to the correct value by flashing the zip from the baligamer post from i9300 forum and now cell standby seems to report NormaL. Battery is no better or worse but found it annoying seeing cell standby up to 75 percent lol
Just my two cents

correct.. its reporting wrong. its reporting 34mA rather than 3.4... i think

Thanks, I haven't rooted yet so wasn't sure if US versions suffered the same issue. I'm coming from an HTC phone, this is my first Samsung, is it easy to root?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Yes its very easy to root especially if one is used to the Samsung galaxy line as they all root very similar using Odin. Just follow the section for your carrier under development ie Sprint development if you're using a sprint version and follow the root thread. Quite easy but it does trip the internal counter and no way yet on the variant to reset yet. So hold off If you're worried about warranty for now

Battery problems

Hi, my s2 is using villainrom 1.4 as an attempt to improve battery life. At the moment i am on 50% battery after 4 hours and a bit with screen on time at 2 hours. Even with moderate usage i hav never gotten over 12 hours...
Could someone give me tips how to get my battery to at least a day, desperate for help. I have auto sync off and use a mixture of wiki and 3g.
I will post the screenshots of battery later as i dont have enough posts yet.
Thanks

What apps u have installed?
Go to the built in battery monitor and check for wakelocks (when the screen is off, but the device is awake)
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
as what BSAKSOUK said, what apps do you have installed?
Try to uninstall all apps you have installed and see if you get some improvements, then install one, test again.
I found that NetCounter kicked in on my SGII and the phone never went to sleep, just screen off but it was awake and drained the battery in 12h
//Mike
I will try and post the sreenshots soon. It seems that awake and screen on is largely related. I may have to factory reset and see how the battery fairs then.
I did a *#1234# and saw my csc is unknown? Do u think there is somethin wrong with my modem? It seem when wifi is on it always drains the battery alot faster.
Ia there any app to monitor how much drain apps cause? Thanks guys

since you say you had the screen on for 2 hours, your battery seems correct. other people on this forum are claiming they get 4 hours of screen on time from a full charge. so if you had 2 hours and 50%, that seems right in line with proper results.

Nexus S battery

Hi did anyone experiance this kind of battery consumption? 3days 14hours and 45min and still have like 7%?
Not personally, I use my phone too much to get that kind of life out of it. Based on what I know about the drain when it's screen off and sleeping, though, I think it's well within the realm of possibility with light use.
I get like 24 hours out of mine... with some light-moderate use... used to be better when I bought it but then after installing some apps it just starts degrading a bit I guess
Well, rechargable batteries do degrade over time, and the more apps you have on a device, generally the less time it will last on battery, partially because those that run in the background consume more system resources and partially because those that update data in the background will keep your phone "awake" more of the time.
If I wasn't using my phone and just let it idle (sync on, airplane mode off) I'd get like 12 days of battery life. That's what I like about the NxS, unlike other smartphones it does actually last longer when not used.
hi
i am getting around 10 to 12 hours. wifi always on. mostly watching youtube videos. netbrwosing. gaming.
2g phone calling
still i think i am getting reasonably good back up

My wife and I both have the Nexus both with battery issues never charging to full 100% always get 95% max. New phones. Battery usually lasted 10 to 12hrs

That's no issue, but working as intended.
Other phones are using the same technique, but they are hiding it by showing the 100% the phone never reached, that's why they drop to 95-97%ish right after unplugging and from there drain normally.
I experienced battery drowning after using app's like maps or latitude. I had to kill them manually, now I'm cleaning the phones memory regularly. That safes a lot of battery life for me on the one hand, but on the other hand loading app's isn't as fast as before.
It's the classical trade-off between battery life an usability. And 10-12 hours are normal for me if I'm using my phone a lot.

Well, depends on the manuf. if they want to "hide" it or not, they could also set 95% capacity as "100%" displayed. All batteries got a safety feature of some kind

in 2g idle it lasts ~14days
9 to 13 hours ,was looking at getting maybe better battery but dont think theres one
So 95% is the new 100% because my phone won't charge to 100%. It just stops at 95%.

And for people who arent flashing a ROM (like myself).
i had my first unusual battery drain last night, woke up with 74% left after 7hrs of sleep. today it's back to normal, 88% left after 11hrs of standby only (very light to no use of the phone), does it seem like i should still root and flash the fix?

Open up your battery usage and see how much of it (%) is being taken up by "Cell Standby". Mine is usually the highest on the list
So is this a fix that will actually give me more battery life or just fix the display of it?

This doesn't fix the problem that some AT&T users are having with poor battery life in areas with bad LTE reception. In those cases, Cell Standby is actually draining their batteries. It isn't just a reporting error. If your battery stays warm even when you aren't using your phone and have all your apps closed, this isn't going to help you.
If I have no Lte just hspa+ would that drain my battery? Like, is my phone constantly searching for lte? I heard to make a custom apn for just hspa + but Idk how or if it will help. I'm AT&T and am having poor battery life

From a full charge to not even totally dead cause I fell asleep I had over 4 hours screen time on first full charge. Will see how it goes over the next few days.

I am very interested to see what people are averaging on their devices. It is the one thing that i was concerned about when i chose the One and made me doubt my selection. So far(3rd charge cycle) I am on 5 1/2 hours screen time and 26 hrs up time. I expect your phones to definitely have better battery life. Will be interesting to see. Wife has a S3 and will be looking at S4 but says battery needs to improve a bit to move to the S4. Will keep an eye on this thread.

4h20 with 20% remaining, so about 5h30. it's the 2nd charge. But yestesrday I was rather on a 6h basis, it all depends on what you do. I've tried many web browsers and they seem to drain much more battery than the stock one.
Today at work I streamed for about 8 hours on 3g. Bout the same as my og evo with extended battery

After MF9 update my battery drains fast, what gives?

Before the update my battery life was ok, now it drains so fast im not sure what the update did but they need to fix this problem. Anyone else experiencing the same issue?
Check what is using a big part of your battery in the settings. Chances are that Google Services is near the top of the list. If so, delete your Google acct and then sign back in. This cured the problem for me....now, Google services settles near the bottom of the list. After doing this my battery life is much better but still a bit below battery life of MDL.
Very very vague.

Well, when it comes to these kind of things the OP has no idea what is causing the issue and apparently has done nothing different because if he did and saw a difference he would have either said what he did or reverted back to before he did whatever he did end up doing so actually it was quite clear. Something is happening as far as battery issues for him versus MDL and from what Igot from OP he has done nothing to it or done nothing different than his previously decent battery setup. Just saying.

I am also having the same issue, today will be my first full day with the update so I will see how my battery life is. I have already tried deleting my google accounts.
My phone was at 100% this morning when i left for work at 7AM, i played a few races on FF6 and listened to music for a while. I am at work and it is now 8:47 and my battery is at 60% I went to the battery section and it says my screen uses 50% but i have the auto screen brighness on and the power saver mode on also. Before the update i would be at around 80% with the same use. I dont have Google Now enabled.

So, in just under 2 hours, your battery drained 40%, with about 30 minutes of on-screen time. That by itself seems to be higher than expected drain for the battery. But you indicated a few races on FF6, and listening to music (I'm not sure what FF6 is, but if it is CPU intensive, maybe that contributed to the drain).
Did you have kernel or partial wakelocks from GPS or something else? How much was your sleep time? (I think you need betterbatterystats to check that, unless you have another similar app that will give you that detail).

...and just the same that you expect others to not assume they changed something - you also can't just assume that because they didn't say anything that it means he DID change anything either.
By the looks of the subsequent and actually HELPFUL posts after yours, there's enough useful information to give them some traction on a resolution. Especially for those that apparently fit the under the original assumption that they didn't change anything with the update.
Noteworthy post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43662159&postcount=15 ..a full wipe
@saintholigan. So you're saying if I had battery drain and needed some.help I would make a thread and just say. My battery life sucks, what's wrong? You would all automatically assume I didn't change anything.
@OP
I would suggest to go to a stock rooted ROM and flash a different kernel other than stock MF9, then google search "better battery stats XDA". There should be a link to XDA that has a free version. Make one or two full discharges with that app and it will tell you if there is any wakelocks or apps that might be draining your battery.

Also you want to disable power saver. From my understanding it doesn't actually save you that much battery and slows down your phone.
