Hello,
I would like to remove (or hide) some of the icons that are on the desktop of my MC75A Device.
I know that theses icons can be found in the \windows\start menu\programs but unfortunately they are in 'read-only' mode : I can't remove them.
Could there be another way to hide or remove them ? maybe by using [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start] keys ?
Thanks a lot

Take Resco Explorer or Total Commander or some other more advanced file explorer than default WM Explorer, and remove the read-only flag from shortcuts You need to delete. In Resco for example, just select and hold the shortcut icon, take "Properties" from context menu and uncheck the "Read only" box. After that You can delete them. Unless they are in ROM, which is doubtful, but with MS You never know...

If anyone is interested in changing the left soft key on the Today page, the registry key is as follows:
KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Today/Keys/112
String Value: Default -> Name to Display
String Value: Open -> "Path to exe"
For example, I changed Calendar to "Comm Manager" as follows:
Value: Default set to Comm Mgr
Value: Open set to "\Windows\CommManagerLink.exe"
No need to restart phone.
hey, how about the weather icon ? i got no use for it...can that also be remapped ? and which registry editor do you recommend ?..thank you
How about adding the New SMS function
I'v downloaded the "New SMS.lnk" file and had a look at the text in it which is as follows:
49#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to ""-body""
Can this be used? I haven't managed so far
Thanks,

Yup, just do not use the 49#.
Can't get it to work.
Name changes fine but application is always Calendar that opens.
On a soft-reset it reverts back to Calendar as per default.
Would you mind checking that it works on your device please?
thanks,
use "softkey aplet" it can change both soft key to any application installed in your device.
Copy softkey.apl into Windows folder an you will find program icon in the setting page. Start-setting-system-soft key
I use this file since WM5 and really not remember who is create this great applet but BIG thanks to them.
and a BIG thanks to you too...works fine
Add that one to my list of indispensibles
I can't fin the windows directory when i'm browsing with windows vista (even by showing hidden files and folders) :/
So i put it into my memory card and tried to move it directly by my Touch but it's like the .CPL file is hidden too.
Any help ? (i'm sorry i'm a rookie at this).
Just tried it on mine with XP
The Show hidden files/folders works fine here.
Maybe Vista?
Can anyone else using vista confirm?
Failing that, copy it to you My Documents folder, then hold your cursor on the screen underneath the last file. You'll get an option to "Show all files"
Can you delete Softkey Applet after you apply the changes?
Thanks, actually i forgot to show systems files into my Touch, i could install it and it worked Great little program !
this is freak'n great thanks!!!

where u got the new sms?
Here are the files
Unzip the NewSMS file and save the .lnk file in your \Windows\Start menu\programs directory
Now install the Soft key Applet .cab and point one of your soft keys to the NewSMS program (I found there were two. One works, one doesn't)
Done

The \Windows folder on your Touch is a system folder, and Vista doesnt display them. Go to folder options, and check the "Show system files" option. No open your Touch on Vista, go to \ and there you go \Windows

erm... how to get to \Windows\Start menu\programs directory? but before save the .ink file, do i need to install any program to support this newsms?
No new prog required to support it lunarken
It's a shortcut to open the sms prog and start with a new, blank message.
If you can't find your Windows folder on the Touch, hold your stylus below the last file in File Explorer and select "Show all files".
If you're running Vista, you apparently ned to make sure you have "Show System files" selected.
It only needs to go in the Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder so that the Soft Key Applet can find it.

You can use Total Commander to copy any .lnk file to a temporary folder, edit the name of the link to "anythingyoulike.lnk"
After that, you can use a file editor (Total commander has one) to edit the content of the .lnk to show 21#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,10 and save.
Move the link to the place you want it to show: tray, drop down menu or using a software to show application on Today screen.
All the best.
1. copy the string between the dotted lines (not including the lines) to your notepad
2. save it as Remove Programs.lnk
3. move the link to your ppc-- windows\Start Menu\Program Files
--------------------------------
ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,10?shellres.dll,-13943
--------------------------------
Note:
1. by doing this, you'll have a shortcut with the native icon for Remove Programs
2. try "shortcut creator" if you prefer some other icons
Thanks Guys.
Thank you wovens and iiiox, it was a combination of you both that helped me. 21#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,10?shellres.dll,-13943 is the string that worked for me. I'm happy now, although I got a basic icon and not the custom one I thought I was gonna have. Check out the pics of the 2 icons below. I must have the 'remove programs' icon next to 'file manager'. It's like addition and subtraction. I never could find the original ink file using Activesync. I just ended up editing another ink with total commander. Is there anyway to change the icon?
The part ?shellres.dll,-13943 tells it the icon to use. Most likely the one you show is actually a png image that is used by the new start menu system for icons.
You can use other programs icons as in ?\windows\myprogram.exe,23 would use the icon numbered 23 in you program called myprogram.exe
I have heard of people creating their own dll files to contain icons they want.

I'm using Energy rom so I figured it was part of it's customization. I'm not sure I understand the example you have given, but I have tried unsuccessfully to locate the wanted icon. Also, I'm clueless about creating dll. Thanks anyway RoryB. Maybe if I stare at it long enough, it will start to make sense to me.
didn't work for me plz help
Hello all, it may be a stupid question, I'm new to WinMo (moving from Symbian) but how I can create folders in Start Menu list (WM 6.5) and move installed applications to these folders ?

Hi Muntos!
The easiest way is to connect your device to the PC via activesync. Then click on "Explore" and copy your programmes and paste a shortcut in the windows/start menu folder. Don't put the actual programmes in the windows/start menu folder.
An alternative way would be to do it on your Diamond 2 using the file explorer. Use your stylus to press and hold the programme, then it comes up with a menu. Press "copy". Then using the file explorer, navigate to Windows/Start Menu folder and then press and hold the stylus in a blank part of the screen. Again, a pop-up menu will appear and you select "paste shortcut".
Total Commander PPC
Hi all
Total Commander for PPC is a very useful tool for this exercise. In particular it has a function to "Hide files in ROM". This allows the Windows folder to load in a fraction of the time but won't hide any of your start menu shortcuts.
You need to navigate to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\XX where XX is the folder you want to edit/populate. If you want a folder to appear on the start menu itself, e.g. Games then create this directory:
\Windows\Start Menu\Games

Thank you guys, you made it very clear !
If you mentioned Total Commander, have you found a solution to the freezing problem when accesing Show\Directory hotlist ?
I want to make a short cut to bluetooth icon that is located in settings folder.
Any idea how can I do that? Being able to put it in to manilla screen short cut would be superb.
Bluetooth shortcut
Hi!
First install the attached cab file.
Then add it as a shortcut.

I have it but that is not it it only enables and disabled bluetooth. I want to be able to go to full BT settings that you can access from settings menu.
Shortcut to BT
the file is called BTManager.exe and is located in the windows folder, you can just make a shortcut to this file.

In case you don't know how, locate the file in file explorer and do Menu, Edit, Copy (or long-hold on the file and select Copy), then go to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs and do Menu, Edit, Paste shortcut.

Yep I see that now however I have already made shortcut to actual cpl file. Thx guys.
Sorry for misunderstanding.
I was interested to do this also, and tried to follow this old post:
since I still cannot post links, Google this:
Q: How can I create a shortcut to a program in settings?
It seems that it cannot be applied to Winmo 6.5, but it may be a lead to someone who knows how to adjust it to new Windows...
Edit: oops, didn't see the above replays...
If you just copy short cuts to settings folder they will appear in settings/system folder after soft reset
the program is uninstalled but the icons are still there. how to i remove them?
x2
I don't own X2 but I would expect it's similar to other wm devices: \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\...
all you have to do is delete them there
best
didnt say it in my previous post but i already did that ;(
If you had really deleted the corresponding entries in the start menu folder you would not have any shortcuts there. Because that's what a program does when it is installed. It places a shortcut either in the start menu folder (visible in the start menu) or in its subfolder programs (visible in the programs menu). I recommend you check again those two folders for shortcuts and if you find some you delete them. The folders are
windows\start menu
and
Windows\start menu\programs
Depending on the language of your rom these foldes can be named slightly different.
P.S. Make sure you use a decent file explorer like Total Commander or Resco Explorer which show hidden files too.
