So holding down the menu key functions as a search key in many apps, however on my home Page of the launcher I get "app not installed". I have Google search installed so I'm not sure what I did, as my Nephew's phone opens it up fine. Any suggestions? Thanks
What carrier is your phone with? Who's your nephews phone carrier? Maybe one carrier doesn't have it?
I use Sprint and it pulls up search.

You can use an other launcher, for example Nova Launcher. There you can customize the button I think. You can rest it and download the free launcher at Google Play.
I use Nova Prime and I press the Menu Button and the camera opens on my Samsung Galaxy S3.

would it be possible to download a task manager and modify the behavior of the home button so that a long press brings it up like on the GSII?
If you get ADW launcher EX, it has this functionality.

I wish I could get ADW or launcher pro to work. Only go launcher will work on my Fire. All the others FC!

Cant find this setting. Can you tell me where it is?

Menu - More - ADWSettings - General behavior - Gestures - Home key binding.
Then select "Open app..." I imagine any app is selectable there. (tbh i think Gestures is an odd place)
Though I now realize that's not long press, but simple tap of the home key. However, you have swipe down and swipe up to use as well.
I sideloaded ADW Launcher without any trouble. Are you rooted, BriDroid?

As an alternative, you can download and an app called Task Switcher in the market. It essentially replaces the initial function of pressing the Home button. Once installed if you press the home button it brings up a task manager similar to the default on most phones and tablets. One of the choices is the standard home app, in my case Go Launcher but it works for any Home screen app. Press home a second time and it will bring up a choice menu where I press Go Launcher.
Next time you press the home button twice takes you to your desktop top.
So effectively it provided the task manager function with the only caveat, that I've found, is you have to press it twice if you want to go to the actual home screen, which for me is no big deal. I'm already used to pressing the home button twice quickly to get to the desktop.
So if you use Apex and possibly other launchers you can set the home key action to recent apps when at the home screen. Don't know how useful it is for everyone but I find it more useful than having to hold on to it at the home screen. Just found it interesting.

Agreed. Wish Go launcher would do this.
On Nova, a long-press of the Home button does this and it must be default since I don't recall setting it up that way. I love it.

Actually, default settings in apex appear to be show previews with a short press of home and show recent with a long press.. been using the long press for a while now.. and the previews is kinda neat as well..
you can also set gestures for the apex actions button too. I have the app drawer on the bottom of the screen but if I swipe up from it, it changes to the default screen..
there are lots of neat tweaks I am slowly finding.. Very impressed with this over my old iphone4...
So much good information on this forum.. keep the info flowing!

Yeah, system default is that long-press of home button brings up recent apps. In Nova settings you can make it so Home button brings you to default screen when you're on any other screen, or opens up the recent apps if you press home while on the default screen.
In Gestures and Buttons in settings, set Home Button action to Recent Apps, then check the Only on Default Screen setting.
I'm trying to figure out how to search on this phone. With my Epic Touch, I had a hardware button in the lower right side that was dedicated for searching for items on my phone. Is there an easy way to do this on the S4? Thanks.
Well the im not sure but I think you can set up one of the buttons to do that, maybe with a launcher, I'm not sure. But by default you can just hold the home button, bringing up the multitasker and at the bottom there should be the choices of task manager, google and remove all. You can hit google to pull up search bar.

Hi guys, i recently bought note 3. I have already disabled home button - s voice short cut. I am wondering is there any way i can set some shortcuts like, double click of home screen will take me back to previously used app or to any specific app.
Thanks

I remeber on my old S2 that there was an application probably called home button or something like that. It allowed to change this shortcut. Now i sold it. Go check it in there. Search for it.
I'm not sure you can do it with the stock launcher. But I know with nova launcher you can assign the home and menu button to certain actions.

If its possible with any launcher app, then there would be some way to customise the home button.

I am not a big fan of giving Google its own button when I have a google search bar on my home screen and can just say "ok Google"
On my Note 4, I was able to program long press "home" to link to a shortcut - all I had to do was disable s-voice and i was prompted to select an action. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to do this on the S7 Edge.
For what its worth, the app shortcut I run is called "last app switcher" that allows you to toggle back and forth between two apps (very useful for apps that do not support split display). It even ignores the home screen, so you can go App1, home screen, app2 and then use long press home to get back to app1.

Only problem is the phone might slow down and get chuggy if you enable any accessibility options.
